Pilot REACTS to DCS World | Experts React

- U.S Navy pilot, David Gregor is back to talk about something a little more realistic with DCS (Digital Combat Simulator World). He's here to tell us all the ways it isn't like Top Gun or Ace Combat with a few insights into what it's like being a fighter pilot along the way.
DCS World acts as a unified platform supporting "modules" (made by either Eagle Dynamics or a third party) to avoid large numbers of individual game releases. This allows for users to join multiplayer servers without needing to purchase every vehicle available, or to more quickly switch aircraft, and allows all development to be done on a single platform. The modularity of the game also attracts talented third-party developers to develop for the platform, furthering its content and popularity.
DCS World is widely known as a "study sim" - players must take care to learn how to operate the aircraft just as a real pilot would.
The gameplay is highly variable based upon what aircraft and location the player chooses. DCS World supports a wide variety of combat operations, from close air support, dogfights, and SEAD, to more reserved missions such as cargo transport. There are a wide variety of planes, such as the P-51 Mustang, Fw-190, AV-8 Harrier, and F-15 Eagle. There are also a limited number of helicopters, such as the Ka-50, UH-1 "Huey", and Mil Mi-8.

So... you got a real pilot to take a look at DCS, a high-fidelity flight sim with over a dozen extremely detailed and beautifully modeled official modules... and you gave him footage of a homebrew F-22 mod.
Bruh.
That's marketing for you.
Seriously he literally couldn't have picked worse videos to show this pilot. The f18 guy was shooting freaking rockets at SAM sites... and F22 is just a mod it's not made to be realistic... Just wow man..
They dont want to buy the f-22 lol
@@PilotViking I don't think there is one outside the mod but the mod is incredible tbh 👌 however I still would have gone with different footage for sure especially the f18 as this guy was talking about tactics and delivery being off which is 100% down to the player.
Even worse Drewski is the prime example of a child playing with toys thinking he’s the real deal, he’s a complete armchair Mil sim kid. They should’ve had someone who’s actually flown before do the footage so at least we can get an accurate comparison.
I don't know why Gamology didn't get Mover, Longshot or Growling's footage. They could've given DCS so much justice than this.
+1 for Mover C. W. Lemoine 👍👍
I was going to say... a lot of his critiques are more from the mission and how people are choosing to fly vs how they could be flying.
IKR, the complaints ended up being how the players were flying and not the game itself.
@@mathza552 C.W. "Mover" Lemoine

Kinda feel the F-22 should've been left out as that's a user mod that uses the simplistic systems modelling from a entry level F-15 module and a completly made up flight model (as everything about the Raptor is still classified), I mean, nothing wrong with it, but it's not really representative of DCS modules, maybe place the A-10C in there instead?
Yeah, the mod isn't really a great representation of the game compared to the F/A-18 or A-10C modules that are from ED and more complete.
@@aaronwhite1786 Comparing them simply makes no sense. The Grinelli mod is a toy, while PAKFA can't be called even that.
Likewise, there's plenty of examples of much more realistic ways to attack a SAM site out there than that one guy they picked a clip of attacking an apparently basically undefended SA10 site inside a steep valley - not that you wont see plenty of that in some missions and servers...
@@getsideways7257 DCS is a toy itself.

Should definitely look at more dogfights by more experienced DCS pilots. Growling Sidewinder and Longshot make some good videos using some basic combat techniques.
Eh no-way, I've just commented the same thing "Good minds think alike" ;-)
Gamology is gonna have to pay Drewski soon if they keep using his footage for everything! Lol
I mean thats up to drewski to decide, they probably ask him for permission then he decides if he wants payment or just credit
Would they even need to give credit/compensation? Isn't this fair use?

They should've used footage from "Growling Sidewinder" or "Longshot" for this.
Agreed, there should be polls on facebook or twitter to choose youtube channels for gameplays, Growling Sidewinder was perfect choice they didn't use.
tbh, IMO GS is not that great of a choice for this, I mean he's for sure a great guy but he mostly does quick arcade-ish engagements where he explains what he's doing to newer DCS players, you really think it'd be a good video to have an actual pilot listen to a semi tutorial video of what a crank is?
@@johjoh9270 : Haha :-D
I see what you mean. But he could just as easily tailor the video to suit this format (if that's how it works). Don't get me wrong, for what it's worth I find "Operator Drewski's" video's entertaining, but if I'm looking for realism aswell, I'll refer to "G.S" and "Longshot"
Each to their own suppose.
@@THE-BUNKEN-DRUM I mean Drewski was also a pretty bad example IMO, I think they should've picked some non commented footage parts of one of those long missions that require a bit more planning, mainly cause I think they show off a bit more of the depth of DCS systems / flight model, either campaigns or multi, say blue flag, flight of several aircraft so he can also see a bit more of the systems, like target input on the hornet, coupled autopilot, datalink, weapons preparation, etc, IDK, might just be me
@@johjoh9270 : Aye mate, I'm with you there. Here's hoping they're listening.

You need to fire who ever picked the sample videos. He literally 1. picked a mod (unofficial module) 2. Picked footage of what not to do.
You took the words out of my mouth .. YF-22 nevertheless
Thank you. This was the absolute poorest representation of how gameplay actually goes, at least in multiplayer.
There is a few mods out there that are half to very decent, like the A-4E. The "Raptor", on the other hand (not to mention the "PAKFA"), belongs straight in Ace Combat.
"If there was a simulator for this" he says as he is watching dcs world.
Hahahaha
One can only dream...
most military simulators are built up cockpits with the screens on the canopy to really get you familiar with the controls, even as a maintenance guy we get put in simulators to do our checks and the like during tech school

@@cpt.macmellon8251 dcs is a simulator you lemon
I love episodes like this, where the expert is constantly talking cause there’s so many things to explain. But the ones where they’re just watching and having fun are epic too.
There's Ate Chuet, who was a French pilot of a Rafale Marine, he did some video and combat with people, and it's quite impressive and fun to see how good they are in tactic combat
As always, Gamology chooses the worst possible gameplay to comment. They could have chosen hundreds of way more capable videos for the commentary and they had to chose someone who played it like it's ace combat lmao.
He really should analyze one of the growlingsidewinder dogfight vids, it would be interesting to see what he thinks of.

When I was in the Navy, when we went on dets to Air Force bases, sometimes our pilots would troll the air force pilots. The air force pilots would set their planes down real gentle, then soon after, our pilots would come in and slam the nose of the Super Hornet down and show off how robust the landing gear is. Good times (not for air framers though).
Yeah you probs added a lot more working hours than needed; probably broke a lot of shock struts. I guess that’s why the Air Force Airframers got a lot less maintenance hours, cuz their pilots care ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I only know this because I’m an airframes and this shit has costed us a lot of weekends.
Bro, these kinds of experts are so damn cool! His work is so technical but he makes it easy to follow and understand at a very easy pace.
This channel is killing it with the people they get to talk about all these topics... If only they could make sure the same standards are kept for the editors.
Thanks for not going mad with the editing. Great video
Good stuff, always great to see real deal pilots react to or even try DCS. Just a shame most of the stuff on YT does not follow procedures (external lights fence in, engagement altitudes etc), but that's also what's great about it: if you want full real (virtually) you get a full fidelity module and fly with a squad of "rivet counting" nerds following NATOPS etc, but if you want to just do "cool shit" you get an unrealistic and simplyfied F-22 mod and do that.
Damn this pilot impresses me so much. Literally he even " locks in " his eyes on clips that he talks about. No eye-ball movement at all. Talks a lot about how focused this guy must be
But you have to multitask in a fighter jet in a combat situation :/
The "Iron Maiden" he's referring to is a drogue attachment for the KC-135 boom. It's literally a basket drogue and short rubber hose we jam onto the end of the boom.
Not every KC-135 has the wingtip MPRS pods that reel out the softer drogue basket, so the drogue we can remove/install onto the boom is kind of a janky workaround to refuel navy jets. It's a LOT heavier and beefier than the MPRS drogues.
Christopher Cano and Larry Lawton together in a video? I feel like this would be such a good combo like Whelan and Israel.
So cool to have tony hawk to talk about games, he knows so much about fighters
Do a kickflip !

The first computer game I ever bought was iF-22 Raptor from the year 1997, which appeared to feature the YF-22 instead of the F-22. I always liked the YF-22 more, both shape and paint scheme.
Man that game sounds familiar as hell, I recall it being the only aircraft you can fly through the entire game and I want to say the first level was over a desert right?
@@100GTAGUY I think most of the game was over desert but the first level certain was.
I see the 412th "look" is still around. That entire base has turned into some irl event horizon.
It kinda makes me chuckle with how fast he talks. I’m guessing he’s used to giving a lot of information very quickly over the radio so that he isn’t taking too much time and blocking other radio traffic. Or maybe that’s just how he has always talked. I just like to think it’s because he’s a pilot. What a great reactor though! He seems like a chill guy to hang out with.

Without practice in using the sim, he could also look quite foolish. He is training in the actual flight hardware.
Let’s get Mover to start doing some gamology!!!
As much as we can respect Drewski for being the more popular gamer to draw attention to DCS, and he has certainly put in the effort to understand some of the platforms in DCS...the entirety of the critique comes from the fact that Drewski isn't using the best tactics. And I'm not even saying Drewski doesn't know better -- he probably knows he doesn't know -- like "I could probably do 1, 2, 3, then use ___ system to launch from a safe altitude inside a window...but this is more fun so GO GO GO!" That's why gamers like Drewski. Watching a "real" DCS pilot on an advanced aircraft is going to be dull because they'd look quite untouchable as they take out targets and don't engage in games of chicken with AA or SAMs. We all do this on this harder campaign missions, and multiplayer dogfights, but for videos we just go ham.
Excellent video! Keep the good job guys!

@@raddox7 The Last episode with the pilot the editor overdid it with GIFS and memes. It was just cringe and way too much. Like when he was talking about the Jet's flaps, they edited wings onto his neck that were flapping, then he went onto wings and they put this massive picture of chicken wings on a plate on screen and covered everything. They just kept blocking the footage and the audio of him talking.
DCS is actually very interesting as a wargaming tool.
This pilot, while getting to fly the real thing, has never flown in a situation where the US didn't have dominant air superiority. And that shows in the first minute. In a situation where CAP needs to be airborne ASAP, you will be on the runway with ---whatever else--- is out there at the moment.
A lot of the FAA rules go out the window when it's the real deal. He's used to peacetime.
The comments about floor are also cap, and I think he knows that. I've seen our own a/c do low altitude maneuvers -- well under 1k, let alone 5k -- routinely.
Would've been better to get his reaction to some of the serious DCS players, including their audio. Rather than what looks like game footage taken for press reasons with wrong loadouts, etc.
Dogfights with gen 4 and gen 5 aircraft have been so scarce, that the data is basically meaningless. Comes down more to pilot skill (Iraqis and Serbians flying a few MiG29s is probably not the best demo of that a/c...)
The downside is that DCS probably doesn't have exactly accurate information on capabilities for any of these recent aircraft.
The fact that the harrier was of the "marina militare" made me happy
Really like these hes great knows his stuff and like to fly at those speeds and get the job done takes some skill
