Yep, the Shadow Warrior reboot, but more importantly Painkiller (2004) inspired Doom 2016 and Eternal. No surprise some of the same devs are behind it :)
Skipping the reload animation with weapon swapping is genius Its less of a compromise to appeal to both sides, rather, its encouraging players to learn weapon swapping
if we get Nu Quake, Nu Duke and Bulletstorm 2 with reloading, implementing "weapon swapping skips reload animations" sort of feature would help them immensely, especially the "melee attacks drop ammo mags" sort of design. I can also see Nu Duke and Bulletstorm implementing a Overkill mechanic where gibbing gives health and can be upgraded to alos drop armor and ammo.
Halo CE had this. granted it was a glitch from double tapping the reload button, but it does have it and the game is much better for it. I wish the other Halo games had that mechanic, because I think magazine sizes can be a nice way to balance the presence of a weapon, but having to stop and wait for the reload can be really annoying. Glad this game could take that approach!
I don't get it, if your just going to skip the animation why have it in the first place? Why not just be like a typical arena shooter and ditch reloading all together?
@@brandonrogers331 well, console shooters happened, which are less intense then Arena shooters, so finding a way to implement both reason to weapon swap(off screen reloading) and change weapons(certain weapons are better for XYZ effect) would make the Console generation more interested in Arena Shooter lites and later into Arena shooters proper.
I wouldn't worry about the story since this is a soft reboot for the series. For a good reason, the last game relied on RNG and Generated Worlds. All in All I really hope most games pick up the doom eternal formalu. Definitely one of my GOTY so far next to Elden Ring
It's a welcome change as a third entry. I loved the first reboot, but the second felt off with the random worlds and looter shooter aspect. This is the best possible route that they could've gone with
@@supercard9418 Shadow Warrior from 2 was not vastly different Only felt like a next gen upgrade But 3 just looks and plays like Doom when it's not supposed to be like Doom
To have a Kids in the hall reference in this video almost made me cry. You are a cultured man Mayo. 12:45 I do believe Timesplitters 2 had manual reloads and would auto reload when switching weapons. It was also "kinda" an arena shooter.
I remember watching a gameplay reveal for this a while back and I was impressed with just how fun the game looked. Glad to hear the game turned out well
@@HallowedPurple It will be ruined for you. I bought at full price ($50) and fully beat the whole game in 3 hours. I can replay it but theres no new game+, so ill just do the same thing but slightly faster. I guess its for you if you like doing the same mission over and over. The entirety of this game felt like one mission. Shadow warrior 2 was my favorite game of all time, but this game is the biggest scam to me.
I like how every game in the reboot series is different so you will always find something for you. The first one from 2013 is this wierd mix of old school and new school but never sticking to either of them. It's an above average shooter which can satisfy people who like the New Wolfenstein games for example. Kinda arena shooter but somewhat inspired by the military shooters of that time. The second game is like a mix of DOOM 2016 and Borderlands. Coop looter shooter with RPG elements, open areas and fast pased movement. It can be better or worse than the last one depending on your preference. And this one is a DOOM Eternal clone. Smaller areas, no more RPG elements and it's more refined and more tightly packed experience. Like they cut all the bullshit from the last two games. But once again someone might prefer the previous games. Each game is different and great in some way. No matter if you like more linear and "realistric", more open and RPG inspired or something in between. I personally love all three 3 games even if the series kinda has no idea what it truly wants to be. I think you would kinda enjoy the first one, it would bore you in few hours but you would not hate it. You would probably hate the second one. Like it's the complete opposite of what you like.
I like this comment because personally I really like shadow warrior 2 even if some people didn't, it was always cool to see what over the top gun you got next, or chainsaw sword
Another game where it's like the devs just read my mind and crafted it just for me. The colors, artstyle, environmental destruction, the unique enemies, the gore weapons. It's like a dream game
The reload mechanic here is also in deeprock galactic. A fps starship troopers themed left for dead style game. You can get a perk in that game that reloads any weapon you don't have out for 5 seconds. It's pretty great.
YES. (Also mayo please play deep rock there's litteraly no way you won't like it especially if you found fun in the more mediocre equivalent Alien Fireteam)
Although tbf Deep Rock doesn't really allow you to make as many quick switching combos due to the 5s wait time. It's still a pretty cool skillful mechanic that encourages using all your tools. I couldn't play without this perk, it's necessary to the experience (also took maybe a couple hours to unlock if I remember correctly, maybe more but anyway it's pretty early and the most meaningful perk alongside dash).
@@placeadrien5566 Personally I think the reloads are generally fast enough that it's not that needed, and weapons like the sawed off and utility weapons tend to already have an upgrade for that. Don't get me wrong, born ready is nice, but I don't think it's that essential to the experience.
I've always said, I'm happy if games take what works from Eternal and make it work for them. If you can borrow what works and make it work for you, that gives me more fun to have.
@5:08 GmanLives was right 😂* *he said in his review that there was a D:E inspired auto shotgun and that “somewhere, UndertTheMayo is creaming his shorts”
It's really cool that you're reviewing all those unique modern movement shooters. Glad to see somebody actually expand on the subject. I would suggest you to check out some of the less talked about titles and maybe make a 25-30 min video reviewing all of them in a bundle? I think that would be pretty neat, something a little bit different than your usual videos. Games I think you should check out: - My Friend Pedro - yep, it's still technically a movement shooter, it just happens to be in 2D - Severed Steel - F.E.A.R. mixed with Titanfall - Get To The Orange Door - weird wave-based sandbox with a lot of mobility options and guns - Acid Spy - literally nobody played this game, still pretty interesting mixture of stealth, walljumping, sliding and jump pads - BoomerangX - very responsive teleporting mechanic, insane mobility
I played f.e.a.r. 2 and it is probably one of the worst fps games ever made..the gameplay was so tasteless you couldn't continue after an hour...the game was so confused as to what it wanted to be...a psychological horror thriller or an fps shooter like call of duty ...
Gameplay looks fun af, I love the past 2 games and Doom eternal . I was so hyped for this until the devs gave into the woke mob and fired lo wangs voice actor for being white (which delayed the game), the replacement has nothing on him
As a pretty long time fan of the Shadow Warrior franchise, I'm glad to see more people enjoying it. It's also super nice seeing someone's fresh perspective on the whole thing. as far as the story goes, yea all three of them boil down to go beat big thing and win, but seeing returning characters was nice and as a fan I loved the story. Seeing this game take inspiration from ghostrunner, Doom and even relying on some of it's own mechanics from previous installments was super satisfying for me.
@@smugplush it doesn't matter whether or not you're interested in either. It's simply a matter of how many eyes you're losing by releasing it this close to something that's already grabbed the attention of so many more eyes. Shadow warrior does not have that mainstream appeal like something like cod. They're targeting a large portion of the same audience as elden ring does (actual gamers). It's just not a good time for the game yet. April for instance has like nothing big and that could've given them far more attention because of that alone.
@@smugplush you don't care, but most people do, elden ring surpassed horizon fw and cod vanguard in sales in the UK, if you don't think this will affect the sales of Sw3 you're delusional
You are literally just handing me games to buy and play. From turbo overkill to warstride challenges and now this. Keep making videos on games like this because I've never been more boredom free in my life. So happy I found your stuff man!
I love all these "they took inspiration from Doom Eternal" videos when really if you play the first game (that is the 2013 reboot) it's kind of the other way around. Shadow Warrior started doing stuff like dashing, a health recharge mechanic useful in the middle of combat, and a soft RPG upgrade system 3 yerars before Doom 2016. Oh and it absolutely combined linear level design with arena combat too. I can't believe how all these "old school FPS fans" managed to sleep on that game.
True but if we are being honest Painkiller was the first game that had linear level design with locked arenas. Edit: And Serious Sam can't believe I forgot about that one.
Linear levels followed by Arena Combat have existed since the second age of FPS with games like Serious Sam. I can't believe how these "real old school FPS fans" missed out on a whole generation of games. The first reboot was an unholy mix of post classic shooters and the trends at the time. Linear corridor shooters. A lot of the stand out shooters were like that. Good but ruined because CoD/Gears/Halo was very popular.
@@BlueLightningSky I never said that any individual mechanic in SW 2013 was new, even Flying Wild Hog themselves used some of those same elements in Hard Reset, their previous game. And FWH is coming from former People Can Fly people anyway so Painkiller was always a strong part of their games' DNA. As for the quality of the game itself I disagree, I always really liked how SW 2013 put more emphasis on melee combat but still had a full "classic FPS" arsenal of weapons and chose to somewhat nerf that in favor of the katana. Once you started playing the game with a "my main weapon is the katana and everything else is secondary" mindset everything came together really nicely. And the level design really wasn't Painkiller levels of linear but that's actually another thing that's very similar to how the new Doom games are doing things. People just got used to that flavor of linearity by the time Doom 2016 came out I guess even though complex level design is really something that's missing from the new Doom formula.
FINALLY. 2 YEARS AND 500 MILLION DOLLARS MADE, AND A FANBASE THAT IS STILL AS ACTIVE AS IT WAS IN 2020, AND FINALLY SOMEONE HAS DONE WHAT WE THOUGHT EVERYONE WOULD'VE BEEN DOING IMMEDIATELY. FINALLY THEY'VE TAKEN WHAT ETERNAL TAUGHT THEM.
Glad to have this to play on my birthday. The gameplay is fun and that is what we need more of. Also Hoji has the same voice from the first rebooted game in 2013. I like it honestly but to each their own.
I played the crap out of Shadow Warrior 2 and loved it for a bit - then it became exhausting and gave me weird dreams (some of the enemies are women that die screaming bloody murder - kind of PTSD inducing). Its really well designed and I love the first person swordplay. SW3 looks like it improves it in every way - actually in severe ways (the arsenal got a little out of hand in SW2 tbh).
The trend of putting random female enemies in doesnt do well for our mental health lol. Even Elden Ring's female scream are so much more high intensity than the counterpart. Or atleast, in my impression.
This is going to be more streamlined than Shadow warrior 2 Two was kind of trying to be this weird procedurally generated looter shooter Fun to play in co-op though But this one has a more linear focus
Is it normal to be traumatized by women screaming like that? I haven't really had a problem with that at all, so either I'm a psycho or just.... Built different. I am not sorry. But seriously am I suppose to feel off-put by women like enemies dying after they try to kill me?
@@stealthbrawler I think it's probably tough for women who have been through something abusive etc. to hear it I don't think it's something considered universally traumatized
After Shadow Warrior 2, I was so aggressively put off by this series that I actually rolled my eyes when I first heard a third one was in the works. I am so happy to hear that this is nothing like the predecessor, and I now actually plan on buying it! Great review!
I'm the same, I bought it one sale like 5 years ago and have attempted to get through it about 3 times. It wasn't horrible, just so dull and repetitive with the least satisfying combat of any game.
@@thegreatgonzales6813 SW1 just felt disjointed to me,like it was trying to be old-school,modern,and a hack and slash, and then ending up with something that fails at all 3,with none of the playstyles flowing into each-other in a cohesive way. the guns where also mostly not impressive (though i didn't beat the game) to me. also the controls where a mess that felt poor on both controller and keyboard and mouse. id complain more, but you probably had enough.
@@Tommy-the-coffee-addict Nah man, I don't mind hearing your complaints, I have several with the game myself. I feel that the swordplay was excellent but there wasn't enough chances to use it and I 100% agree that the guns were pretty lame (especially since you're forced to use them in boss fights). The late-game enemies were also ridiculously bullet-spongey and it made combat a drag at times. I disagree about the controls personally, sure they were weird but I found them easy to get used to after a while and liked the simplicity of them, definitely not a game for controllers though. I quite enjoyed the mixing of old-school and modern styles as well, especially with all of the secret rooms and easter eggs to older games.
True, I tend to disable it in the developer console, it really doesn't belong in the Half Life experience in my opinion, especially in hard difficulty.
I enjoy the Shadow Warrior IP. With the patches added in Shadow Warrior 3 I was able to do chapter select mode a picked up the one upgrade orb that I missed thus achieving all achievements in the game itself making Shadow Warrior 3 game #15 on Steam to become part of my Perfect Games list out of the 16 Perfect Games of mine that I'm currently rocking on Steam. The game after that on my forementioned Steam list of Perfect Games is fellow 2022 first person shooter Forgive Me Father. There's a special place in my heart for boomer shooters having Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, and others as parts of my gaming childhood. Nice video review btw!
But shorter, smaller in scope, and from the sounds of it, much easier. Also, this is a personal pet peeve, but I hate comedic FPS protagonists. It's one of the reasons Doom is so iconic and Duke Nukem was left in 1996. Silent protagonists forever. Looks like a good game though for sure. PC Gamer trashed it entirely on woke grounds, which bugs me to no end.
@@Fruitpunchyearsago Look into the Doom wadding community. There are tons and tons of iwad replacements of stunning quality for Doom. Infinite content. Duke 3d, not so much.
11:18 Well, Doom 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein had huge arsenal with manual reloading. Particularly on RTCW I enjoyed that mixed style. Because of the somewhat realistic setting of RTCW, reloading makes sense. But it also allows you to have every weapon you found, so it doesn't have the very unfun mechanic that Halo has of forcing you to abandon weapons.
I find it funny that autoreloads after switching off were only things in half life 2 and team fortress 2 at as far as Im aware atleast. More prevalent in tf2 as only a few weapons had it but those that did benefit the playstyles immensely
The Shadow Warrior reboot is one of my favorite FPS campaigns from the 2010's. It took the best elements of the Doom, Half-Life, and CoD eras of FPS's and seamlessly blended them together all while injecting its own unique identity into the mix. While it is a "the story is unimportant" kind of game, Lo Wang and Hoji have a genuinely well written bond. I'm not going to spoil anything but I sat through the entire end credits in complete silence with a tear in my eye. People say that Doom 2016 was inspired by Shadow Warrior 2013, while I don't know if that's true I could very easily see why people believe that. Then Shadow Warrior 2 came out. It's a poorly made Borderlands clone that took all of the worst aspects of the previous game and doubled down on them. I'm glad I got it when it was free on GOG. I'm so glad that Flying Wild Hog seems to have learned their lesson from that disaster.
Great review! I was on the fence on this one seeing the other reviews but you've highlighted precisely the things I'm looking for in an FPS! Will definitely get. Keep up the great reviews
This looks really awesome! I'll have to check this out in the future. I think the next Doom game should let you use The Crucible as a melee weapon to gain ammo and have it on a cooldown like the Chanisaw but also make the Chainsaw an option for people who want to get ammo "the classic way".
While I like chainsaw I think getting ammo back with a sword like in SW3 looks more fun. Slicing enemies with sword fluidly and quickly in the heat of combat is great. A Crucible like sword that you can manually slice enemies(not glory kill) to get ammo back would be a great in future Doom game.
@@fuckso2342 The way I imagine being able to use the Crucible or Chainsaw would be is between missions, you could change the Doomslayer's Weapon loadout so you can have Chainsaw or Crucible as Melee, bring the Pistol back as an option if you don't want to use one of the other guns, and be able to only choose BFG or Unmakyr as your Ultimate Weapon. It would invite a way to potentially add more weapons, make Crucible and Unmaykr more viable, simplify options without limiting them while making you make choices that impact gameplay, and make true Pistol Starts an option again in Modern Doom.
@@KaiKrimson56 for the Pistol, IMO if there was a Small Freaking Guns patch or new game gets the small arms, I can see them as a "switch between bullet pistol, slug shotgun handcannon and a Plasma revolver and kills drop ammo for their ammo type" meaning pistol drops bullets, Slug handcannon drops shells and Plasma revolver drops plasma. this would make them utility weapons while also giving them a place in the arsenal.
The combat in SW3 is amazing; it's so smooth and all just flows together well. It's just such a shame that the short length, story, extremely linear levels, and lack of exploration held this game back.
I've been watching your channel since around the time doom eternal was released. there was instantly something different in your style. You can be meticulous to a scientific level but you seem to always carry it with levity and appreciation. I can tell you're serious about having a good time and I think it confuses some people. I think it's beautiful! 😄♥️
@CessNight5672 "some of his opinions are valid" I think I understand what you're insinuating but you sound very arrogant making statements about the validity of others opinions. Maybe you just mean that you agree. But then say that instead of making claims about validity.
That reloading system is great, I was surprised hearing you describe it since it actually sounds like it was directly taken from the Project Warlock 2 demo from a few months ago, even down to the sword, although PW2’s claymore operated on a stamina system. I highly recommend you check that out. And just to be clear, I’m not saying they copied PW2 or if they did that that’s even a bad thing, it’s an amazing system, I just thought that was worth pointing out.
agreed, if there is a Nu Quake, Nu Duke Nukem, Bulletstorm 2 and Nu Blood, the weapon swap reloads offscreen is a great feature as well as "melee attacks give ammo drops" which would give them bettercombat flow if a reload mechanic is implemented. Hell, even just the weapon swap skips animations would be great.
Most of what was in DE was already in other games or mods, glory kills, weapons points, weapon mods, suit tokens, double jump, dash, all of it was in Shadow Warrior 1/2, Brutal DOOM etc.
Exactly. That's what i said in the intro. That's why that stuff doesn't make DE the game it is. It's the player accountability and resource management underneath.
1:57 KIDS IN THE HALL!!! No way! I thought I was the only human being that still remembered that show! The second I heard you say "Bruce McCulloch", I was like "Wait... Wait, WHAT?"
The Biggest issue is this, the reboot of shadow warrior was a souls like fps, shadow warrior 2 was a looter shooter in the vein of borderlands, shadow warrior 3 is now a doom inspired fps and its honestly killing the franchise because it cant just pick a lane and refine it. It leads to massive jarring changes and as well the story just forgets its self every single installment and its better to just play the one that looks the best to you.
12:29 - THIS IS SOOO GOOOD!!! I hate how in DE the Heavy Cannon mastery removes the limit on micro-missiles. Having only 6 and having to wait for them to reload just feels right. It's a clear indication of when to switch to another weapon. I guess more experienced players do well without it, but for me... it just works.
the game length and no new game+ is why I just have to wait for a sale and hopefully DLC. I loved the first two in this trilogy as well as the original so I am quite excited to eventually get my hands on it.
Hey Mayo, the voice is trying to go for Terence McKenna. He is an "LSD philosopher" who has been sampled by countless psychedelic trance bands. They'd often put a phaser on his voice to make it more spacey sounding, and that's audible here too, it's this weird tone to the voice like it's coming out of a long plastic pipe. Listen to Shpongle - A New Way To Say Hooray for an example of exactly this.
you know originally i was like, damn this guy has some decent takes but honestly now im not so sure, SW3 was for all intents and purposes the definition of an "ok" game, saying "the best since" is a bit.... exaggerated?, that being said it's the internet, and you're entitled to your own opinion so go for it I suppose.
It's certainly the best FPS combat loop since DE. And I struggle to think of another FPS that's been this fun. COD failed, Battlefield failed, Halo infinite was mediocre. At least this has a really solid and confident combat loop.
@@underthemayo That is true, while a great combat loop is essential to the quality of the game, for me at least that doesn't define how good a game is, but i can actually see why it'd be fun for a lot of people, it just felt a little repetetive, maybe due to the aftershocks of doom eternal. I can see the allure it's just not for me I suppose
1. Games really easy even on hard 2. The melee which was really fun in the first game is just the doom Eternal chainsaw equivalent 3. The abilities from the previous games no longer exist like the special sword attacks from 1 and 2 only gun upgrades exist and their extremely basic upgrades 4. Weapon variety is very basic compared to the previous games only 6 weapons 5. The game is short only a few hours if content 6. Game has very little replay value can't even do NG+ 7. The voice actor changes are extremely noticable also Pro ZD as Zilla fucking really? 8. The game is extremely content dry
15:18 Under The Mayo: It absolutely will be on my best game of the year list right there next to Sifu and I absolutely recommend this game. It is certainly not perfect though. Me: What is perfect anyway? Even Doom Eternal isn't perfect.
@@ericdesjardins1854 Why do they do that? I generally don't like to criticize harshly game journalists but I don't understand how you can give a 3 to this game that is better optimized and way more fun than most games from Ubisoft, Activision, EA, etc. Maybe they are actually retarded after all and definitely paid to advertise those crap games 🤷🏻♂️
@@Jack_War Because game reviewers are completely inept at understanding what makes a good video game and are corrupt shills for big AAA publishers The fact that Cyberpunk got a 9/10 from IGN despite being a lazy, rushed and broken mess should tell you everything about game journalists
This video made me buy the shadow warrior bundle on Xbox… I feel the same way Mayo does about it, lots of fun. I wanted some doom style play, but has enough of hell for a bit. Rage 2 is fun, combo system is similar, but mechanics are slower. This is a lot closer to doom eternal speed, and a fun change of pace. Ironically it’s still demons, but visually much different.
I agree that this game would benefit from a horde mode or some kind of expansion campaign. What I would love to see is a DLC that remakes the original game into this.
dude I'm so stoked to hear you gush about how much you enjoyed this game. Today's my birthday and I can't help but feel like this game dropping today is a gift from the universe haha
I was wrong about this game. It's MUCH better than I thought. Here are the problems it has: -The exploration is almost as bad DMC5 due to so many invisible walls and death warps. It requires a video guide for upgrade orb locations. -the UI needs improvements, and maybe a tab for tutorials. It's so easy to miss what the game wants to tell you. -it needs mission select. Maybe not NG+, but definitely mission select. -a bit better optimization for cutscenes. -"click to continue" message for loading screen tips. -fix for audio balace. I think the length is fine. Maybe it should've been 10$ cheaper in price like sifu. There are things it does better than doom eternal: -there are no cool downs -no animation hiatus for weapons It's unfortunate many people didn't enjoy this game due to having different expectations coming from Shadow Warrior 2.
I'm happy to hear all of this because all that most people ever talk about is BOO HOO IT'S TOO SHORT NOT ENOUGH CONTENT!!! Like, dude, so the game only takes 5 hours to beat? Classic games were even shorter but you still replayed them so you can do it better each run, right? That's how I felt with this game. I love Doom Eternal and its length and content, but for a quick, similar, and concise experience, I go to this game.
Jesus christ its been so long ever since i even touched a game in the franchise, the last shadow warrior i played was the original with all of it expansions, which i did before covid started. Im hyped to get back into it after seeing this video!
For me run and gun games should have a mechanic where all the weapons are demon-possessed and reload themselves due to psionic abilities of your character. Much like how you got magic familiars in Castlevania Symphony of the Night that have spirit living inside weapons and stuff like that. The reason Halo healing system worked well is that it didn't break the lore of the game. A cyborg character with a shield that regenerates makes a lot of sense. For a run and gun game set in fantasy world with mystical powers with demons and supernatural powers being reality, the auto-reload makes just as much sense for Shadow Warrior as Shield Regeneration does for Halo or finding and wearing the vest in Golden Eye on nintendo 64 to be able to take more hits if you actually find it. Each game just needs to come up with a justification for it and I am happy. I see Doom as needing to maintain a horror feel to it, but also make the game about action and close combat. (the shotgun being the bread and butter tool in the arsenal for mobs of weak enemies) But for each game that weapon might be different. In Call of Duty its obviously rifles because of the range you encounter people at. But for Run n Gun, usually it falls on your character doing a shotgun at point blank, peppering them with rapid fire sub machines guns, or cutting them into piece with sword. Halo suceeded in all of those: it made you go to the shotgun for charging enemies like The Flood zombies, but be more careful with aim for Elites, and then for Brutes you needed to focus on headshots or well placed sticky grenades because they are damage sponge enemies. Run and Gun games where there is no cover could introduce a riot shield style weapon where you race forward into your enemies with it raised up and impale them on the spikes on the shield to kill them, but it might not suit the character. (this is something that makes sense for beginners who don't like the concept of dodging or strafing charge enemies much) If they introduce a slow and careful option like ducking behind a shield and using the shield as a alternative to circle-strafing the game would be able to be apreciated by fans of slower games like Halo too.
Dam Why the hell isn't there a preload option. Had no idea this was coming out but after this video and another, I bought it. I love Doom Etwrnal, and want this trend to continue
Gotta say, I am a huge fan of what I like to call “TV games.” What I mean by that is, you know those games that are so generic and over the top that they show people playing in movies or tv? Stuff that is so over the top and obviously either fake or ripping off a game so that it seems like a parody? That’s what this game looks like, and I couldn’t be more excited to play. So batshit insane, but that’s why I liked the second game a lot.

if we get Nu Quake, Nu Duke and Bulletstorm 2 with reloading, implementing "weapon swapping skips reload animations" sort of feature would help them immensely, especially the "melee attacks drop ammo mags" sort of design.

Another game where it's like the devs just read my mind and crafted it just for me. The colors, artstyle, environmental destruction, the unique enemies, the gore weapons. It's like a dream game
5-6 hours long
The reload mechanic here is also in deeprock galactic.

Games I think you should check out:
- My Friend Pedro - yep, it's still technically a movement shooter, it just happens to be in 2D
- Severed Steel - F.E.A.R. mixed with Titanfall
- Get To The Orange Door - weird wave-based sandbox with a lot of mobility options and guns
- Acid Spy - literally nobody played this game, still pretty interesting mixture of stealth, walljumping, sliding and jump pads
- BoomerangX - very responsive teleporting mechanic, insane mobility
I feel like it’s worth bringing up that another excellent FPS F.E.A.R. will also reload your weapons when you swap to different ones.

Seeing this game take inspiration from ghostrunner, Doom and even relying on some of it's own mechanics from previous installments was super satisfying for me.

@@fuckso2342 serious sam?
Half life and it’s sequel also have a similar reload mechanic, where if you’re off a weapon for a short time, it’ll reload itself

This is going to be more streamlined than Shadow warrior 2

The late-game enemies were also ridiculously bullet-spongey and it made combat a drag at times. I disagree about the controls personally, sure they were weird but I found them easy to get used to after a while and liked the simplicity of them, definitely not a game for controllers though. This feels like an updated version of Doom Eternal.
But shorter, smaller in scope, and from the sounds of it, much easier.
Also, this is a personal pet peeve, but I hate comedic FPS protagonists. It's one of the reasons Doom is so iconic and Duke Nukem was left in 1996. Silent protagonists forever.

I think the hammer is gonna become repurposed as the chainsaw.

So you’re telling me shadow warrior 3 began development right after doom eternal? As in March 20, 2020 and was made just in under 2 years!?
No, but during it's development it definitely took influence from it's design philosophy and has a very similar feel.

I can't remember the game, but weapon swap reloads have been a thing for a long time in gaming, they're just used infrequently.
At what part of any of the fast moving and shooting looks like Souls?
12:29 - THIS IS SOOO GOOOD!!!
I hate how in DE the Heavy Cannon mastery removes the limit on micro-missiles. Having only 6 and having to wait for them to reload just feels right. It's a clear indication of when to switch to another weapon. I guess more experienced players do well without it, but for me... it just works.
I've heard great things about SW3, and how closely it is to DE, which sounds great. Definitely gonna play this one!

It's VERY Mediocre. The type of game that's made as a cheap cash grab.
I agree that this game would benefit from a horde mode or some kind of expansion campaign. What I would love to see is a DLC that remakes the original game into this.
just wait for EVIL WEST = Red Doom Redemptiont/ God of War but with guns
dude I'm so stoked to hear you gush about how much you enjoyed this game. Today's my birthday and I can't help but feel like this game dropping today is a gift from the universe haha
I was wrong about this game. It's MUCH better than I thought.
Here are the problems it has:
-The exploration is almost as bad DMC5 due to so many invisible walls and death warps.
There are things it does better than doom eternal:
-there are no cool downs
-no animation hiatus for weapons
It's unfortunate many people didn't enjoy this game due to having different expectations coming from Shadow Warrior 2.
That reload mechanic is excellent because it almost makes reloading a punishment for not switching weapons
12:32 That's absolutely brilliant.
The reloading mechanic is very nice because it also encourages to not use a the same weapon for too long
That’s like my favorite thing about doom eternal and this. Using every gun is so satisfying
Pretty sure you're going to name your child doom eternal.
OH SORRY, MY EMOTIONS ARE MAKING ME TESTY!
My goodness this game *is* gorgeous. Also, a Full Auto Shotgun?? My interest has been doubled.
Done. Buying it. Awesome review!
This just looks like 30gb of epileptic seizure to me
guess im the only one who beat hard mode without that quick swap trick and fully relied on the grenade launcher
Started playing this the other day and man oh man. I am loving everything about this game.
genuinely surprised offscreen reloading isn't more common
Now i know what game i will buy next
Jesus christ its been so long ever since i even touched a game in the franchise, the last shadow warrior i played was the original with all of it expansions, which i did before covid started. Im hyped to get back into it after seeing this video!
Straight up, Hoji was the best part of Shadow Warrior 2013. The whole story was like a buddy film with some serious feels at the end.
"Horizon Zero The Horizoning" It's got a nice ring to it xD
5:07 - oh, man. Imagine if they grabbed the OG Riot Gun's rate of fire...
Dam
Why the hell isn't there a preload option. Had no idea this was coming out but after this video and another, I bought it. I love Doom Etwrnal, and want this trend to continue
Gotta say, I am a huge fan of what I like to call “TV games.”
What I mean by that is, you know those games that are so generic and over the top that they show people playing in movies or tv? Stuff that is so over the top and obviously either fake or ripping off a game so that it seems like a parody? That’s what this game looks like, and I couldn’t be more excited to play. So batshit insane, but that’s why I liked the second game a lot.
