Doom 3 lighting is actually pretty impressive even without age taken into account, at least for me. it looks a little crude but its very precise and works well with the intended atmosphere. All of that is shown off even better in the vr mod
I already didn't like the 2016 shotgun after starting with Doom II because it felt so weak against even imps and soldiers, can't imagine what forums were like back when Doom 3 first came out.
That Doom 2 track was a great choice for this vid. People seem to forget that elevator music is also a part of classic Doom. Also I actually like the track.
I appreciated it for being its own thing. I know Doom 3 was polarizing but I think the experience only helped id refine their skills in making later games. Doom 3 certainly hasn't aged too well, especially in its level design. But I liked the art direction, the monster designs are interesting and it certainly is atmospheric. The shocks got cheap and annoying after the first hour, but the game remained creepy and unsettling throughout. Or at least until you pulled out the chainsaw and went on a rampage.
I appreciated for how this uses the most realistic scenario if a demonic invasion ever happened. The gore, the horror, the dread...sure, anyone could feel enough inspirated by Doom Eternal to the point of feeling like a force of nature that even Hell woud fear. But in my opinion, Doom 3 works on the other side of this situation, with what would probably be the most realistic scenario: death and panic. And you would be the prey.

Doom 3 was a spectacular game, and I would say it’s about as good as dead space. This is the best DOOM 3 review I've ever seen. DOOM 3 is my favorite DOOM game, and while I understand why a lot of DOOM fans have issues with it, I hate it when people absolutely refuse to understand its mechanics and the purpose behind them, then proceed to call it "bad game design" or something. Most of all, I hate when people say that the shotgun sucks because it forces you to get up close, and yet they're trying to shoot things with it from far away. You've always been a very fair and logical UA-camr, so I'm glad that you can understand the game. Thanks for not just turning this into a dumb meme about "DOOM 3 stupid not scary lmaoooo," even with the falling asleep bit. the shotgun didn't felt good for me, but isn't really a problem since you have a cool chaingun to use instead i didn't scared me, to be honest, i felt more tension in a Duke Nukem 3D map than in all of Doom 3
I love doom 3 atmosphere, lights, graphics, first part of story and early game, hell was strange, but how enemies is placed in that environment, how action feels through me away, everything become annoying very quickly
I remember I was so excited to play doom 3! This game showed that a store bought PC that was 3 years old was not good enough to run new games, and since I was 17 and made $5.15 an hour, I couldn't afford to build a new PC. Didn't get to play Doom 3 til 2009!
I loved Doom 3 back in the day but I'm a little afraid to go back to it. I remember it looking and sounding amazing. It genuinely creeped me out and I thought the Hell levels had fantastic atmosphere. I don't remember ever feeling lost in the game. It all seemed really linear to me. Enjoyed the video. The part from Silence of the Lambs had me cracking up.
I 100% disagree with you about this game. When I first bought it in 2003 I admit I didn’t get on with it, I wanted a fast paced game with little to no text. I bought it again for my Switch a few years ago (BFG version where flashlight is attached to the gun & graphics which amazingly still hold up today) and I LOVED it! Regarding having to always look at the PDF and read absolutely everything; you don’t. Literally every audio or text entry would be important and if not, you can just skim read for a code when you see a crate instead. I got lost once, and simply looked at a UA-cam walkthrough of the game to help me.
I'm part of the few that actually like this game. I loved it when it came out, this to me, is what Doom is supposed to be and it was terrifying. I have it in on my Xbox as well as my Switch. Yeah I
what i like the most in Doom 3 is how heavy the combat feels, like it feels like it has a lot of weight and considering it´s a survival horror it adds up a lot for the experience imo
it didn't felt that much of a survivor horror for me, since combat is very frequent and ammo is more than plentfull, in fact even without guides on veteran i never found myself without ammo on base game and only on RoE i reached that point, but even then i had 34 grenades
The last time I played this game I was 13. Scared out of my mind at every corner...now I realize it wasnt the darkness and enemies that fueled my fear. It was the confusion of not knowing where the hell to go and not being able to see😂
Personally, 2016's Hell is by far my favourite iteration. It felt so...ancient. I would have loved to see more versions of Hellified worlds that Hell had consumed. In a way, I also felt like the story in 2016 was one of its strongest elements as well.
I prefer the flashlight being separate as it adds a strategic edge. Also not having access to vision and firepower at the same time in dark halls adds the paranoia. All told I like the game despite only experiencing it for the first time recently
It's not underrated. Everyone says it's a great game. It's just not a good Doom game. It's like with 2008's Prince of Persia. It's an amazing game, most people who played it through, liked it. But people who were expecting a PoP game did not.
Lol - I recently revisited Doom3 in between Eternal DLC's and literally fell asleep while walking around on more than one occasion. Woke up to find myself staring at a wall.
I'm surprised no one has made an extended hour long vid of Mayo's sleeping sounds. N-not that I would want that or anything! J-just that there's weirdos out there that would probably do that...
Not the biggest fan of horror-focused games (aside from a bit of Dead Space, and I greatly enjoyed Metro 2033 for its unique aesthetic), so DOOM 3 was never going to be a favorite of mine. The lighting was so dark that it was almost impossible to figure out where I was going, the level design was claustrophobic, and the guns weren't fun to use. Especially that ridiculous pellet-shooter shotgun abomination with a spread angle that did not need to be nearly that wide. I barely went for thirty minutes before I put it down for good. I bought DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal and never looked back. I can see that the developers wanted to do something unique, but the overall experience was significantly impacted by the console shooter trend that started with Halo and Call of Duty. And as someone who grew up with Halo before playing all of the CoD games... it's hard to find good quality console shooters that don't feel dated. Metro 2033 was very refreshing in that regard. The story of DOOM 3 was rather lackluster and it didn't do much to grab my attention, and the combat isn't nearly as fast-paced and cathartic as it is in the newer DOOM games... mostly because the guns feel odd and you can barely see what you're shooting at half the time. There was definitely something up with the sound design in DOOM 3. Sound design is a very important part of shooter games. One of main reasons why I liked the gunplay of Halo 4 was because it got rid of the terrible sounds for the assault rifle in Halo 3 and replaced with a bigger punch.
Honestly, I loved Doom 3 when it first launched and I still do now. I was blown away by its graphics at the time and I would get genuinely scared by it. These days I still love the atmosphere of Doom 3 and I feel its lighting engine holds up well. Sure, the combat is simple but I find it satisfying. The shotgun and machinegun are particularly fun to use in my opinion. Then there is the nostalgia I have for the game. I still remember picking up my original copy with a friend and installing and firing it up for the first time. Good times. Doom 3 VR Edition was recently released for the PSVR and yes, I had to pick one up just to try it.
i dont get the problems with the PDAs and the story and the more slow pacing of the game, needing to listen to everything and read everything to unlock doors and such. i absolutely loved the game and it had an amazing atmosphere, i think they completely nailed what they wanted to do with it, as in build more of a survival horror game. ofc it doesn't hold up to the originals and the modern doom games 2010s but come on, the game on its own is amazing.
lol, I replay Doom 3 at least 10 times per year. Dhewm3 with librecoop is pretty damn fun. And once Scary's model remakes for rbdoom3bfg are finished, Doom 3 is going to look pretty damn awesome. Also, you need g_fov 110, the default FoV is quite low and can make navigating and aiming more difficult.
I always thought the flashlight being separate was to create tension.. does this also mean that the shotgun that fires with the accuracy of a thrown handful of rocks was also that way to conserve frames?😂
I did not mind the game at the time though was disappointed the combat physics and impact was greatly reduced from what was shown in early version, though i think there may be mods for that. I did get a bit fed up with....collectable in the middle of somewhere....pick up demons appear
you didnt mention how they use the same imp jumpscare again and again and again. even in the ending levels, like you would be scared of an imp while having a minigun.

I love doom 3 atmosphere, lights, graphics, first part of story and early game, hell was strange, but how enemies is placed in that environment, how action feels through me away,
everything become annoying very quickly
good video but that quake 1 visual mod you played with disgusts me, never trust anyone who tries to alter quake's perfect original look
Ehh, some smoother lighting and transparency effects wouldn't mind, but yeah.
Yeah that mod is kinda ugly, agreed.
That one was great, very informative and digging deep into the analysis. Love it. Keep it up with the good content.
Gosh I love Doom. Doesn't matter if it's Doom 1, 2, 3, 64, 2016, Eternal...I love it all.
Just needed to get that out.
This video really opened up my eyes on this game. I appreciate your insightful analysis.
I'm part of the few that actually like this game. I loved it when it came out, this to me, is what Doom is supposed to be and it was terrifying. I have it in on my Xbox as well as my Switch. Yeah I
Wow you really committed to the bit at the end.
I respect that.
what i like the most in Doom 3 is how heavy the combat feels, like it feels like it has a lot of weight and considering it´s a survival horror it adds up a lot for the experience imo
it didn't felt that much of a survivor horror for me, since combat is very frequent and ammo is more than plentfull, in fact even without guides on veteran i never found myself without ammo on base game and only on RoE i reached that point, but even then i had 34 grenades
The last time I played this game I was 13. Scared out of my mind at every corner...now I realize it wasnt the darkness and enemies that fueled my fear. It was the confusion of not knowing where the hell to go and not being able to see😂
"Somewhere... somewhere aroun... here...."
UnderTheMayo's last words
I dont think its good for Doom 3, that everytime I see it, Im thinking it would be cool to play Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay again.
Personally, 2016's Hell is by far my favourite iteration. It felt so...ancient. I would have loved to see more versions of Hellified worlds that Hell had consumed.
In a way, I also felt like the story in 2016 was one of its strongest elements as well.
In terms of Hell I'd rank them;
3 > 2016 > 64 > Eternal > DOOM 1/2
2 minutes sleep section? Great)
Listening to you snore to classic DooM music for 3 minutes is more entertaining than most of DooM 3 :P
Great now we just need DOOM DOOM 2 and DOOM 2016
And Doom 64.
Honestly I really wanted to see your video about Doom 3
T’ndid ohw
You pretty much did. I dont have that much more to say about it.
@@underthemayo what about the dlc?
HOLY SHIT HE DIRECTLY REPLIED TO YOU WTF
Doom 3 had the best theme in my opinion
I love how the music at the end is DOOM 2’s soundtrack named “DOOM” and it’s extremely soft and quiet it might as well be sleep music.
Man that main menu theme was fantastic.
I prefer the flashlight being separate as it adds a strategic edge. Also not having access to vision and firepower at the same time in dark halls adds the paranoia. All told I like the game despite only experiencing it for the first time recently
DOOM 3 is extremely underrated, change my mind
It's a fun game but it's not really fast like the other games
Good game but it's not very doomy
It's not underrated. Everyone says it's a great game. It's just not a good Doom game.
It's like with 2008's Prince of Persia. It's an amazing game, most people who played it through, liked it. But people who were expecting a PoP game did not.
@@nosferathu258 the people I know personally think it's a shitty game, not just a shitty doom game
With a lobotomy or...?
Lol - I recently revisited Doom3 in between Eternal DLC's and literally fell asleep while walking around on more than one occasion. Woke up to find myself staring at a wall.
You have problems.
Are we gonna ignore the fact that the dude deadass slept for the last two minutes of the video?
The whole thing about all the levels looking the same is intentional to create claustrophobia and a sense that your lost to help the horror atmosphere
now we need to see above the mustard’s review
Speak for yourself I'm waiting for Right on the Ketchup's review
you both deserve yourselves one to another
I'm surprised no one has made an extended hour long vid of Mayo's sleeping sounds.
Low attention span.
lol, I replay Doom 3 at least 10 times per year.
Thats just as much Doom 1 and 2 though, sometimes even moreso
I waited through the whole video at the end LOL
Doom 3 was the best Doom so far and you cant make me think otherwise.
Meh it was better when it was called half life imo
Is this the breathing pattern Cynic was talking about?
you didnt mention how they use the same imp jumpscare again and again and again. even in the ending levels, like you would be scared of an imp while having a minigun.
Doom 3 is my top five games, I’m disappoint. Funny video and awesome editing.
i had to make sure i didn’t accidentally skip to another video when he fell asleep
Doom 3 wasn’t really my cup of tea. But it’s theme song is One of my top 10 favorite songs in the franchise
Hey Doom 3 is hella linear, how come you have such a hard time navigating around? I never had that problem 🤔
Otherwise good video a always Mayo
It was open enough, in some places its basically as "linear" as Doom 1 or 2
I think the problem is the samey environments, also no map.
@@RacingSnails64 Quake and 2 didnt have maps either, probably cause they didnt really know how to translate the 3D environment into one, what with the rooms above rooms and all
@@tobiasgerhardt7604 for me quake 1 especially everything looks the same in each chapter. I know there are outliers and the chapters look different but inside each map it is kinda samey for a lot of them
love how you picked out the lateralus inspiration they obviously took for the doom 3 theme. as someone who plays guitar, the riffs are pretty similar, focused around the same scale patterrns. and the first two power chords in the main riff are literally the same from lateralus, open D power chords. great vids btw man, love your stuff
Mayo wake up! There's a Hell Knight behind you!
