Alkadondon, That's a myth. Shot by shot, practical effects are far cheaper than CGI. They just take more upfront planning. With Practical Effects, one creature build can yield hundreds of shots, with the flexibility of allowing directors to improvise on the set. With CGI, you pay by the shot, and any changes are an additional expense. -Matt
People always really, really, _really_ underestimate the cost of CGI. I think its an outstanding time for a resurgence of practical effects...particularly in smaller budget films.
We couldn't agree more Christopher Butler! That's why we're here. -Matt
Amen
I'm a big believer in using CGI to enhance the practical instead of replacing it. The amount of time and work needed to replicate something realistic on a computer is crazy. Especially when you could probably get it done and out the door in half the time or less with a practical effect. Not saying that what you do is any less. (just talking about render/ simulation, ect.) Keep up what you guys are doing. I'm a CG artist myself, but I still love the physical presence of the practical side.
True Shim Z It's all in the balance. - John
When I first saw t- rex, I was in shock of how realistic she looks! She is the main villain in this movie and deserver all the love!
She looks absolutely magnificent. No doubt one of the proudest accomplishments of Stan and his creative team.
Still looks as realistic and amazing as it did 21 years ago. This movie and it's effects, both practical and digital, will remain timeless forever.
it's unbelievable what you guys have accomplished with Jurassic Park. just as unbelievable that i haven't seen this footage before. sometimes i almost forget what incredibly talented artists are responsible for a movie like this to be so good. these artists are the main reason why the Jurassic Park films are so much better than all other dinosaur movies. i hope those people are deeply involved in the production of Jurassic World ;-)
Thanks for the kind words AlexCorso752. - David
Haha at 6:16 it sounds like the T-Rex is saying what's being spoken by the guy lol
+rush92287 What's even funnier is it's supposed to be a female t-rex xD
+rush92287 ROFL XD XD XD
Yeah...it does.
@@somasaysmeep8281 xD
And to this very day the dinosaurs in jurassic park, especially the raptors and t-rex, look better than most '3D animated' effects today.
Amazing. pure magic that still stuns audiences today.
This is just jaw dropping. I remember watching this when I was young and JP was my favorite of all of them. And to think this was back then. Man I'm disappointed in JW they only used cgi and not many animatronics. This was the best project and most successful one universal has made.
WAY BETTER THAN CGI !!! That's amazing!
You all are amazing! This T-rex looks so real and is the best looking T-rex even made. I wounder if this is how they really looked, the way their face looked and all.
This is amazing. Screw CGI.
everyone involved with the T-Rex are geniuses!!!
Jurassic Park has the best dinosaurs ever than in any film production. Nothing can top these ones.
I was 12 year old when Jurassic Park release. I was amazed by those scenes like other millions of viewers! It's really nostalgic!
The animatronic t-Rex was used for all close-ups. Especially in the scene with the attack on the vehicle. - David
Thank you so much for these videos, it is truly an art form and it is a pleasure for myself to see these projects come together. I am still studying engineering right now but I sometimes do makeup and creature effects on the side for film projects or costumes. I can only aspire to work for you guys in the future! Thank you for all the movie magic in my childhood.
I can't even imagine the amount of hydraulic fluid being crammed through those rams to give this kind of movement. The technical reps must have thought you were nuts given the specifications needed.
That's wonderful. I work on a lot of masks. some of which are avian. And that membrane sticking out thing becomes a hassle for me sometimes. Xb it's just interesting to hear certain problems experienced by (much more amazing) other artists and creators!
imagine how many more incredible sfx achievements like this one could be realised if studios and directors didnt rely on cgi.
Beautiful and masterful craftsmanship!
And we're grateful, keep 'em coming!
I wish everyday people could be on stage with an animatronic, like this one, to agree with the people talking in this short video. It's not like every day you deal with robots (yet) and you can barely build an animatronic at home because of M O N E Y. Life's hard because of the government, making people pay for things, ruining thoughts and dreams when they could be building things like this.
That was incredible!
aww man, this is what got me into animatronics and wanting to be apart of movie making, so great to see.
I want to be that guy at 1:26 that got to sit on a T-rex
alexis carter life goals
brilliant! love watching these vids, great to see how the magic happen's
Guys, thank you! Thank you thank you thank you! I could never thank you enough. All that stuff you are sharing with us is just a real treasure. Thank you for making my childhood AWESOME. Thank you for inspiring me so much. I am going to get a subscription on your tutorial videos. Thank you guys for making it possible for me to learn from the MASTERS!! Loads of love from Switzerland!
hard to believe its already been over 20 years
Tartiitastic, We agree! And that's because Jurassic Park did it right, blending all available techniques to create magic. Films that rely too heavily on a single technique just aren't as convincing. -Matt
Still amazing, never bettered.
I expected a retort as such. I agree with you. But essentially, what I was stating is that there are certain aesthetic properties that are unattainable with computer generated graphics. Practical effects will always prevail when it comes to realism-- no matter how "realistic" computers may make something appear. Nothing will compare to the real deal. Even on a miniature scale.
God bless you guys for this awe inspiring masterpiece! When time travel becomes a thing, I'm going to visit you guys on set while this was getting done! I'll be that pizza delivery guy honking outside the studio! ......just so you know! ;) hehe
+Watchme
You mean, you _will have been_ the pizza delivery guy.
You guys did a great job. Amazing. 🤩
Man these are so cool.
Yo Rex grab me a beer.... brings the fridge.
Too much work in the backstage for make one of the greatest movies ever, un piece of art
I love this (:
its a big gril 🤣🤣🤣❤
This movie is the reason I wanted to work in special effects.
Great stuff guys, really enjoyed your video.
Amazing upload thanks ; )
Animatronics > CGI
I haven't heard of the INSERT HEAD they highlight and mention at one point, what was that used for???
I have a question For Stan Winston School, did you guys made the T. Rex that is in Universal Studios for Jurassic Park The Ride?
I am way too obsessed with this.
I wish those robot could walk, that's would be awesome for prank videos :v
Watching this made me think that, not all things in movies are CGI
What about the shots when its walking? Is it compleatly CGI or a combination of both?
I am curious, and I hope you guys still get on to reply to my question but what ever happened to these two models of Rexy? Did they just get scrapped and used to build other models or are these models still assembled and on display? and dang, I wish I had a few million dollars to buy this, Jurassic park's behind the scenes on the T-Rex is what caused me to work on animatronic models to see if I could ever creat something this awesome, Maybe one day I'll be able to create one of these and display it.
Sad to say, MfourCQB Hobbiest, that the animatronics were long ago repurposed and reclaimed and the skins would have deteriorated. Nothing of those T-Rex's remains intact, as far as I know. - David
Stan Winston School
That is wrong, should of put them in a museum. All that work and it gets destroyed...
To be fair though, the props themselves go through a lot of wear and tear, and a lot of the latex/silicone appliances can rot when not preserved properly
This > CGI
Was Stan Winstons Shop Responsible for The T Rexes used in Jurassic Park the Ride In Hollywood? If so what type of skin is used on those to prevent the degradation you would expect in Foam Latex? Those T Rex animatronics take on heavy moisture on a daily basis.
Stan Winston Studios did not supervise the animatronic dines for the JP ride. However, we do know that those dines get reconditioned frequently. And the foam is sealed. - David
Will do! -Matt
That hydraulic T-rex mouth could crash mans bones like toothpicks
This type of mentality going around is sort of mistaken.
Especially since CGI made a lot of Jurassic Park work.
CGI when used appropriately is an amazing cinematic tool. It gives you The Matrix, Terminator 2, Lord of The Rings, Fight Club, etc.
The problem is when film makers go CGI > this
When it ultimately should be This+CGI.
Awesome!

What happened to this beast after all of the movie production was done?
How much did the final T Rex weigh ?
May i know where is this Trex now? i mean what did you do with it after the movie? Hope it is still intact.
You know seeing this stuff I hate how the actors get awards for their performances yet stunt doubles and people who make this stuff get nothing but their names up on the credits which no one reads.
Why do the animatronics look so much better in JP1? In the sequels, I don’t know if it’s the lighting or what but the baby Stegosaurus that Julianne Moore interacts with just doesn’t look very good. Same with the Spinsosaurus in JP3 when it’s attacking the plane. In JP1, the sick triceratops looks so freaking real. It’s incredible. But in the sequels something just isn’t right with some of the animatronics. There isn’t a shot in the first film that takes me out of the film. Sometimes I think it’s that the animatronics look too “clean”. The sick triceratops in JP1 has dirt & grass all over it & just looks like it’s been in the elements. By contrast the less convincing dinosaurs of the sequels look too clean & shiny. So maybe it’s that mixed with the different lighting or skin textures...I don’t know. But the first Jurassic Park holds up sooo well. It’s insane.
I'd love to know what happened to the robot itself? So cool that movies back then they took care to make every scene look real. Nowadays they'll throw $20 worth of CGI I could make into some shitty Marvel scene and call it good.
Too bad the Japanese folks don't own one of these. The pranks would be too EPIC lol!
Do the little arms move?
Thanks
Our pleasure. -Matt
Ok thx! :)
man i would be so scared
I missed my calling in life.
Did anyone else notice the Brachiosaurus head in the background?
I hope my question will get answered: will Jurassic World have animatronic dinosaurs, or is that answer still a secret?
Afraid we can't talk about JP4 at all. - David
Trevorrow is actually planning to use more animatronics than CGI for JW. Expect some major realistic dinosaurs in 2015. :)
+Stan Winston School Now that JP4 has been released, is it possible to get some specifications on what was animatronic, and what was CG?
There was only one animatronic, if you haven't payed attention. The rest was heavily detailed CGI.Alaris O'Hart
TyrannWright I actually haven't watched the film, what I have seen deeply disappointed me, it just felt like passion wasn't there at all like in it was in it's predecessors. So no, I guess I 'haven't payed attention.'
So where is the full size Trex Now?
Kyle Crill The full sized version has been long taken apart, just the way it goes but there are many many screen used JP dinos in museums and in private collections all over the world. BTW we have 1 Compy in the archive and he's way cool. - Erich
Yeah, but 3D effects are less expensive than this ;)
Why do they use chi when special effects is cheaper looks Better and ages far better than cgi it's just better in every way the cgi in JP did not age well but the trex still looks finaminal to this day.
I know CG has its place (and it was done very well in JP) but it's relied on too heavily these days... and the worst problem by far is, since gaining digital freedom, the "camera" (the viewer's perspective) has forgotten its role: to put you in the movie. Now it's completely out of control.
I watched the new Ninja Turtles trailer the other day, and was turned off. I'm sorry, but spinning 360 degrees around characters as they slide down a mountain doesn't feel realistic to me. I want to feel like I'm there, not like I'm on a ride.
How much money was all of this?
Rebuild it. PLEASE.
Where are they now? Will you use them to JURASSIC WORLD?
Although i am 3D modeler/sculptor, i would definitely would love to learn this art...because, come on..it IS an art!, nothing beats this feeling, envy here!

To me it’s kinda sad cg is taking over. Because this type of art is just amazing and the accomplishments you all made where unbelievable. Thanks for shearing these behind the scene experiences
Yep, Definitely one of the most incredible moments of my life was standing on set with the T-rex in all its glory. We're releasing these videos so that the rest of you get to share in the magic with us. -Matt
you and the team made possible one of the best memories of our childhood, thank you
The movie made me shit my pants, Thank you so much for the childhood you have given me!
Hey Huntley, The T-rex was transported from Stan Winston Studio to the set via a giant flat bed trailer in the middle of the night. We were unable to cover it with a tarp for fear of damaging the latex skins and paint job, so it was in full view the whole way. To your question about the foam latex skin, unfortunately it rapidly deteriorated after the film was completed due to the natural properties of the latex as well as the extensive rain damage from filming. -Matt
That's one of the reasons we're doing what we're going, Kotaro. To make sure the magicians behind-the-scenes get the recognition they deserve! -Matt
This is the number one reason I’m not a CGI fan.
you just got hearted by Stan Winston School so epic
This is so amazing, Thanks for showing us!
you just got hearted by Stan Winston School so epic
Just an amazing piece of brilliance and art. Just the most amazing I thing I have ever seen put together... I grew up with this movie, literally watching it over and over again all day long. And to see the wonderful mechanism in action is just the most mesmerizing thing I have ever seen. Great work.. Wish you all a wonderful future ahead :D
Emily Detherage Can I just say DITTO to all? You are so right, I watch this movie many times a year and it still hold up to todays standards and then some...A wonderful, fruitful, enlightened future to you as well. Thank you for your comment - Erich
it's looks soooo real! I would be so convinced if it was hidden with trees and bushes XD
What a masterpiece, you guys rock!!
Thank you! We love doing sharing this footage with all the fans out there. Keep checking in, more to come! -Maggie
The magic of movie making! :)
You know what it is, I recently watched the Jurasic Park 4K blue-ray and for the first time in 20+ years I could tell the difference between animatronics and CG(In Jurassic Park)... The CG in the Jurassic park is noticable but the animatronics still look great. I really hope for Jurassic World 2 they go back to animatronics as a main game plan for the dinosaurs and use CG only when it's needed.
You always upload THE BEST Jurassic Park behind the scenes footage I've ever seen. Keep up the awesome work!
These guys have the best job ever

LMFAO, THE TREX WHEN IT PICKED UP AND THREW DOWN THAT PIECE AT 5:30 IT WAS LIKE "oh, um, im sorry, i didn't mea-it just sorta fell over. >.>"
I'd legit be scared shitless if I was in a dim-lit room with that thing, it's so impressive! the way it moves and everything, just brilliantly made, love it
+Friesian177, If you're looking for a place to start your Creature FX education, look no further than www.stanwinstonschool.com! -Matt
if you guys were to build this now with all the technology of today i wonder what differences and improvements we can see!
syrfnr Maybe a fully animatronic, independently walking, radio controlled dinosaur! - I wish - Erich
Stan Winston School My plan is to research and build exactly that in the near future! I've heard someone said "no dream is ever too big".
Where dreams and magic were actually made....Awe inspiring, well done to everyone pulling this amazing project off and hats of to Mr. Winston. May he rest in peace.
