To me it’s kinda sad cg is taking over. Because this type of art is just amazing and the accomplishments you all made where unbelievable. Thanks for shearing these behind the scene experiences
Hey Huntley, The T-rex was transported from Stan Winston Studio to the set via a giant flat bed trailer in the middle of the night. We were unable to cover it with a tarp for fear of damaging the latex skins and paint job, so it was in full view the whole way. To your question about the foam latex skin, unfortunately it rapidly deteriorated after the film was completed due to the natural properties of the latex as well as the extensive rain damage from filming. -Matt
Where dreams and magic were actually made....Awe inspiring, well done to everyone pulling this amazing project off and hats of to Mr. Winston. May he rest in peace.
Alkadondon, That's a myth. Shot by shot, practical effects are far cheaper than CGI. They just take more upfront planning. With Practical Effects, one creature build can yield hundreds of shots, with the flexibility of allowing directors to improvise on the set. With CGI, you pay by the shot, and any changes are an additional expense. -Matt
People always really, really, _really_ underestimate the cost of CGI. I think its an outstanding time for a resurgence of practical effects...particularly in smaller budget films.
I'm a big believer in using CGI to enhance the practical instead of replacing it. The amount of time and work needed to replicate something realistic on a computer is crazy. Especially when you could probably get it done and out the door in half the time or less with a practical effect. Not saying that what you do is any less. (just talking about render/ simulation, ect.) Keep up what you guys are doing. I'm a CG artist myself, but I still love the physical presence of the practical side.
Yep, Definitely one of the most incredible moments of my life was standing on set with the T-rex in all its glory. We're releasing these videos so that the rest of you get to share in the magic with us. -Matt
I'd legit be scared shitless if I was in a dim-lit room with that thing, it's so impressive! the way it moves and everything, just brilliantly made, love it
it's unbelievable what you guys have accomplished with Jurassic Park. just as unbelievable that i haven't seen this footage before. sometimes i almost forget what incredibly talented artists are responsible for a movie like this to be so good. these artists are the main reason why the Jurassic Park films are so much better than all other dinosaur movies. i hope those people are deeply involved in the production of Jurassic World ;-)
With CGI sometimes no matter how realistic it may seem you can always tell is not real but no one can take that away from practical effects, they bring something else to the table
It must have been incredible once these things were built standing next to the and thinking that these things really walked the earth hundreds of millions of years ago. Fantastic work.
and the movie still looks fantastic, too! I mean, the special effects were just outstanding. it doesn't look that dated at all. I can only think of one scene that had a minor flaw to it. I can't imagine how impressive this must've looked in theatres in the early 90's
You know what it is, I recently watched the Jurasic Park 4K blue-ray and for the first time in 20+ years I could tell the difference between animatronics and CG(In Jurassic Park)... The CG in the Jurassic park is noticable but the animatronics still look great. I really hope for Jurassic World 2 they go back to animatronics as a main game plan for the dinosaurs and use CG only when it's needed.
that is incredible. even in this archive footage that isnt meant to make you believe the t rex is real (like a film would) this thing looks terrifyingly, intimately, real.
Years later, and this is still awe inspiring. Man, I would love to have been part of working on something big like this. That T-Rex is iconic for me, and seeing all the work that went into it, just.. wow. :D
You all are amazing! This T-rex looks so real and is the best looking T-rex even made. I wounder if this is how they really looked, the way their face looked and all.
I find it quite funny how in the comments for science videos you see religious arguments, and in the comments for special effects videos you see CGI vs Practical arguments. I'm not going to get in to that argument, all I'm going to say is that the animatronic T-rex in these videos is simply stunning and amazing from both an art standpoint and an engineering point. Thank you for sharing such videos as this one :)
This is just jaw dropping. I remember watching this when I was young and JP was my favorite of all of them. And to think this was back then. Man I'm disappointed in JW they only used cgi and not many animatronics. This was the best project and most successful one universal has made.
OMG hahah i can only imagine driving in the middle of the night and then just like in the movie looking in my mirror to see TREX coming up behind me. what i would give to be on the road that night. Such a shame that an amazingly detailed and beloved piece of artwork like that dino didnt make it through the years. but it did its job and mesmerized me on screen 20 years ago and still continues to do so today. what i would give to have been able to marvel at it in person though.
I always enjoy watching films like this of the back stage shots. The skeletons beneath the skins. It's that organic feel to each one, the drawing from nature but not replicating nature that you guys do that just adds that spark of life to each creature. That's what I find most inspiring. Replicating nature only produce a hollow shell, drawing from brings each piece into reality and breathes an almost tangable living essence into them. Thank you for so many years of incredible work.
Even though they didn't build and use realistic animatronic dinosaurs like this again for Jurassic World, It still was a really entertaining movie to watch!
Just an amazing piece of brilliance and art. Just the most amazing I thing I have ever seen put together... I grew up with this movie, literally watching it over and over again all day long. And to see the wonderful mechanism in action is just the most mesmerizing thing I have ever seen. Great work.. Wish you all a wonderful future ahead :D
Emily Detherage Can I just say DITTO to all? You are so right, I watch this movie many times a year and it still hold up to todays standards and then some...A wonderful, fruitful, enlightened future to you as well. Thank you for your comment - Erich
Thank you so much for these videos... amazing. I read The Making of Jurassic Park when I was a kid, and it was great, but nothing compares to seeing video of the actual construction / production. Jurassic Park was definitely ahead of its time in terms of effects... they still hold up today, and actually surpass anything I've seen since.
Thank you so much for these videos, it is truly an art form and it is a pleasure for myself to see these projects come together. I am still studying engineering right now but I sometimes do makeup and creature effects on the side for film projects or costumes. I can only aspire to work for you guys in the future! Thank you for all the movie magic in my childhood.
I can't even imagine the amount of hydraulic fluid being crammed through those rams to give this kind of movement. The technical reps must have thought you were nuts given the specifications needed.
I know this is old. Grew up on JP movies and imo the animatronic dinos still look the best. CGI a is over used in many movies. I hope one day we will get to the the point where they can build full size T-Rex that can fully move/act and grab stuff as if was real. Heck it’s prob possible now to build in 2021. Has anybody build real full size T-Rex that can walk/move and grab stuff? Hah Good video :)
Tartiitastic, We agree! And that's because Jurassic Park did it right, blending all available techniques to create magic. Films that rely too heavily on a single technique just aren't as convincing. -Matt
That's wonderful. I work on a lot of masks. some of which are avian. And that membrane sticking out thing becomes a hassle for me sometimes. Xb it's just interesting to hear certain problems experienced by (much more amazing) other artists and creators!
I wish everyday people could be on stage with an animatronic, like this one, to agree with the people talking in this short video. It's not like every day you deal with robots (yet) and you can barely build an animatronic at home because of M O N E Y. Life's hard because of the government, making people pay for things, ruining thoughts and dreams when they could be building things like this.
As close to having a pet dinosaur (specifically...a T-Rex) as possible. I would love to have a remote control robot like that. Not that I would try it (definitely not)...but I wonder if that thing could actually injure someone if they made him (or so I hear...a 'her') bite someone. Yeeeeeeks!
Gfan2012, You are not alone. #JurassicPark is a milestone movie experience for many people, including all of us at Stan Winston School. For much more behind the scenes peeks, click here: bit.ly/1bbmF3K -Matt
One of the few things that really want to do is to just touch it and feel the skin of the T rex. Ever since i where a kid i dreamed of owning of these amazing Creations.
Guys, thank you! Thank you thank you thank you! I could never thank you enough. All that stuff you are sharing with us is just a real treasure. Thank you for making my childhood AWESOME. Thank you for inspiring me so much. I am going to get a subscription on your tutorial videos. Thank you guys for making it possible for me to learn from the MASTERS!! Loads of love from Switzerland!
Whenever I think of the T-Rex and how it might have looked, 65 million years ago, I always think of Jurassic Park. There have been plenty of films done with dinosaurs over the years, but very few of them, if any, capture the look of the ones seen in Jurassic Park and it's sequels. Jurassic Park's T-Rex is both beautiful and scary at the same time. Stan Winston and his team did a marvellous job of bringing these prehistoric creatures to life. If we never bring dinosaurs back to life, we'll always have Jurassic Park to show us what they would have been like to behold.

She looks absolutely magnificent. No doubt one of the proudest accomplishments of Stan and his creative team.

That's one of the reasons we're doing what we're going, Kotaro. To make sure the magicians behind-the-scenes get the recognition they deserve! -Matt
When I first saw t- rex, I was in shock of how realistic she looks! She is the main villain in this movie and deserver all the love!

you and the team made possible one of the best memories of our childhood, thank you
The movie made me shit my pants, Thank you so much for the childhood you have given me!
I'd legit be scared shitless if I was in a dim-lit room with that thing, it's so impressive! the way it moves and everything, just brilliantly made, love it
Haha at 6:16 it sounds like the T-Rex is saying what's being spoken by the guy lol
+rush92287 What's even funnier is it's supposed to be a female t-rex xD
+rush92287 ROFL XD XD XD
Yeah...it does.
@@somasaysmeep8281 xD
Still looks as realistic and amazing as it did 21 years ago. This movie and it's effects, both practical and digital, will remain timeless forever.
And to this very day the dinosaurs in jurassic park, especially the raptors and t-rex, look better than most '3D animated' effects today.
it's unbelievable what you guys have accomplished with Jurassic Park. just as unbelievable that i haven't seen this footage before. sometimes i almost forget what incredibly talented artists are responsible for a movie like this to be so good. these artists are the main reason why the Jurassic Park films are so much better than all other dinosaur movies. i hope those people are deeply involved in the production of Jurassic World ;-)

I was 12 year old when Jurassic Park release. I was amazed by those scenes like other millions of viewers! It's really nostalgic!
With CGI sometimes no matter how realistic it may seem you can always tell is not real but no one can take that away from practical effects, they bring something else to the table
It must have been incredible once these things were built standing next to the and thinking that these things really walked the earth hundreds of millions of years ago. Fantastic work.
This is the number one reason I’m not a CGI fan.
you just got hearted by Stan Winston School so epic
This is so amazing, Thanks for showing us!

The magic of movie making! :)

LMFAO, THE TREX WHEN IT PICKED UP AND THREW DOWN THAT PIECE AT 5:30 IT WAS LIKE "oh, um, im sorry, i didn't mea-it just sorta fell over. >.>"
You all are amazing! This T-rex looks so real and is the best looking T-rex even made. I wounder if this is how they really looked, the way their face looked and all.
Amazing. pure magic that still stuns audiences today.
I cant tell you how much i love your Jurassic park videos.
Its like watching magic what you did on this movie.

2020 and this is still mindblowing, just amazing work, best thing ever created in movie industry, I am just looking at it with big smile
imagine how many more incredible sfx achievements like this one could be realised if studios and directors didnt rely on cgi.
Even though they didn't build and use realistic animatronic dinosaurs like this again for Jurassic World, It still was a really entertaining movie to watch!
This is amazing. Screw CGI.
You always upload THE BEST Jurassic Park behind the scenes footage I've ever seen. Keep up the awesome work!
WAY BETTER THAN CGI !!! That's amazing!
4:04 It looks so amazingly real, almost if an actual t-rex was there.
That T-Rex looks so real.
What a masterpiece, you guys rock!!
Awesome footage. Jurassic Park is pretty much the one movie of my childhood, and it's pretty amazing to see the amount of work that went into it.
The insert head was used for close-up photography where you didn't need to see the entire beast. -David

Jurassic Park has the best dinosaurs ever than in any film production. Nothing can top these ones.
The animatronic t-Rex was used for all close-ups. Especially in the scene with the attack on the vehicle. - David

To me T-Rex is the best animatronic design ever !
And we're grateful, keep 'em coming!
aww man, this is what got me into animatronics and wanting to be apart of movie making, so great to see.
*The only is issue is that hydrolic pistons still too stiff and far from looking organic*
I wanna see Ace Ventura riding this dino in the third part :D
The Best Crew Ever!
Tartiitastic, We agree! And that's because Jurassic Park did it right, blending all available techniques to create magic. Films that rely too heavily on a single technique just aren't as convincing. -Matt

Oh if only I could win the mega millions, I'd buy all the dinosaurs out of storage!! I'd play with them all day long, 24/7!!!
OedieBawz, The SWS animatronic T-rex was used in JURASSIC PARK's Road Attack sequence, intercut with the ILM's CGI Rex. -Matt
Surely this masterpiece is still on display somewhere, if so where would on go to see it?
As close to having a pet dinosaur (specifically...a T-Rex) as possible. I would love to have a remote control robot like that.

Steven Spielberg... The legend
How does it feel to know work you did over 20 years ago is still considered the bench mark by which all other big effects movies are measured by?
6:04 "I have a big head and little arms."
WHAT !!!?!!! it was not a real dinosaur in the movie ... well it meant you did a REAL GREAT JOB ! lol
That was incredible!
if you guys were to build this now with all the technology of today i wonder what differences and improvements we can see!
syrfnr Maybe a fully animatronic, independently walking, radio controlled dinosaur! - I wish - Erich
Stan Winston School My plan is to research and build exactly that in the near future! I've heard someone said "no dream is ever too big".
hard to believe its already been over 20 years
brilliant! love watching these vids, great to see how the magic happen's
I'm right there with you, InkCombat :) - Maggie

Animatronics > CGI
okay that is freaking awesome
Remote control T-rex..... I want one!
speedyd10 me too oml imagine what you could do with one
Yo Rex grab me a beer.... brings the fridge.
Thank you, guys.
Imagine how scary it would be to work on this
this is the best thing I've ever seen, its just alive! amazing job
This is really really cool thanks for sharing!
