Hunter, I've been sitting on the sidelines as this CG vs. Practical FX debate has raged. At Stan Winston School we believe the best approach to creating "Real" creatures is to use a combination of techniques, just as was done to such great effect in Jurassic Park. CGI is not "better" than practical. Practical is not "better" than CGI. It's when you use them TOGETHER that you can create magic. -Matt
I hate it when people say CGI sucks. CGI is bad, yes, but ONLY when it is overused. CGI is good for quick movements like running and jumping, whereas animatronics are good for slow, stationary movements, like looking around, biting(sometimes), roaring, etc. It’s when you use an even mix of the two methods that the effects look amazing.
That's the thing, "@@lunapyrope9683," here in America, people are entitled to say whatever the hell they feel like saying. Whether anyone else agrees, disagrees, is annoyed is irritated, whatever. People are allowed to form their OWN opinions, and express those opinions openly, in the, "public square," without fear of retribution, regardless of what ANYONE else thinks. Men and Women have given their lives so that we all have that same protection under the law, and just like you have the right to say that you, "hate," this or, "love," that, other people have the right to as well. I may absolutely HATE what somebody has to say, but I will defend to the death their absolute right to say it!
totally agree only too much of CGI suxx buts the problem most Works only with it todays but its not only a CGI mistake,we need better directors today 99% suxx so bad and get tonmuch with woke Ideology and that in a dream theater,i dont want say and hearcthat i had enough of them,Hollywood needs a big chance the Creators of SFX stuff etc costumes mechanic models all are good but the rest needs a complete change before its too late and Fuck Netflix prime and co they destroyed the cinema culture
It's amazing how they were able to make it look so real! Especially being in the early 90's when technology wasn't that advanced. This beats CGI anyday!
Thanks Sounding7thTrumpet. As one of the crew who got to work on the movie, I can tell you that standing in front of this T-rex when it was powered up and moving around remains, to this day, the single greatest moment of movie magic I've ever experienced. Long live "real" creatures! -Matt
Hi Mynameis Chris, Stan Winston School is not a creature creation studio but an educational website that connects students with all of the top FX artists in Hollywood who are working on all the most current blockbusters. Take a look around our website and start learning from them! www.stanwinstonschool.com
I've been wanting to go into special effects makeup and design for some time now..but with the rise of CGI, it's discouraging to see so many movies go towards the computer animated effects. I will always remain a huge fan of the real life special effects..Jurassic Park was one of those movies that inspired me and seeing the behind the scenes making of the creatures just blows my mind.
This is so awesome to see again. A time when creating special effects really was special, not just keystrokes on a computer. Rex still looks better than any CGI.
stab2486~ Have an opinion? Yes. Start cursing people out? No. We appreciate your point of view... and in many ways, we agree with you. But do NOT troll here. Thanks~ John
Saw Jurassic Park in the cinema today and I'm still in awe of, not only, what Stan Winston's team was able to pull off 20 years ago, but also what Dennis Muren and ILM managed to create digitally. The effects holds up to this day and the film is entertainment at it's very best. If you haven't seen JP on the big screen, don't miss this opportunity. The 3D may not have been neccessary but it was the best 3D-conversion I've seen so far and it did not impact the film in a bad way.
Stab2486-- we love all you guys. And we know how difficult it is to make anything look organic using either technique. We will support ALL artists here. BOTH CGI and the real stuff have a place in film. Use them together!! - John
Kingcletusthecatfish... That's a CRAZY NOTION. These guys were so racing against a budget to make the monsters and the movie, not to mention the fact that no one knows before a film is made the impact it might have. Had Stan and company shot the BTS on FILM, there'd be no MONEY left to make the Monsters! : ) - John
When the T-Rex escapes, that is still one of the most tension building scenes I've ever witnessed!! Couldn't have been accomplished if the dino looked unrealistic!
I'm here because I'm watching Pumpkin Head, directed by Stan and it's a cut above the usual slasher and I just found out he died at a pretty early age. I just wanted to see more about him. He terrorfied my young son in Aliens. Nothing like it existed before. When I was watching it, I knew I was watching movie history. Not just the social events, but the natural acting. Actors talking over each other, etc. Before that actors took turns. Just groundbreaking all around. Jurassic Park was flawless. Man was a genius. Too bad he didn't live longer.
This is a trully work of art and love, why this kind of material wasn't realeased on the DVDs??? I LOVE to see this kind of stuff! (And meeting the people behind it).
All you need to know is how to use 3D programs? Just looking at the interface of them can be mindbending on its own. Just because it takes a different set of skills and knowledge doesn't mean it's easier. And they both draw from the same set of fundamental skills, in anatomy, proportion, form, lighting, composition, and design.
though this is Amazing, there is WAY more to computer special effects than just a "Keystrokes", like anything else, the computer is just a tool, its the artist who makes the magic
One last point. I love everything you guys have done and since I was a boy of 10 have studied it in depth, reading about the making of this film nearly everyday between the ages of 10-14. As a boy, I even made molds and latex skins from some models from the film. However Coelurosauria are now thought to have been feathered. Would love to see this kind of magic and scientific accuracy you guys employed combined with the greater knowledge we have of these beasties today.
Man I remember in 2010 ish when that footage of the red on set was put up it was like seeing the Holy Grail. Thank you guys for being the first magicians to reveal the tricks!
Amazing, not any theme park open today has a better anamatronic dinosaur. Ive seen universals anamatronic dinosaurs and they dont even compare in the slightest to this.
NO! Tyranno! No no no. Please don't misunderstand. We were just doing a MOVIE about you. In reality, you were absolutely flesh and blood and bones... and maybe feathers... and a few banana sized teeth. And scaly, oogy crazy big feet... with little tiny toe arms. But we're so honored to have fooled you! - John
I used to love watching these special effects / filmmaking documentaries almost more than the movies themselves. Such artistry goes into creatures and characters. If any of you picked up the Hobbit on DVD. There is a 2 hour video blog on the making of the movie, and it is awesome! Hobbit got robbed by Life of Pi, and Les Miserables at the Oscars (especially by Les Miserables for costumes)
John-- The problem is finding the right balance between animatronics/CGI and the live action sets/actors/props shot on film. If animatronics/CGI look too realistic people are thrown out of the movie experience because they start asking themselves "How did they do that?". But if it is not real enough you create an uncanny valley effect: When human replicas look and act almost, but not perfectly, like actual human beings, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers. - Samuel
I always wondered about safety on set with such gigantic animatronics when I see those videos. Were the T-Rex' teeth made of rubber or... everyone on set had to be extra-careful? Thanks for posting those bts videos anyway, it reminds me the old days, when I was reading the making of book over and over again.
I understand that it is very impressive that they did this, but there is no reason to insult all of the talented people who work in CGI. "not just keystrokes on a computer" What the hell do you know about CGI?
Hey! place making of the puppy t-rex everybody wants see. is an animatronic wireless and interesting, the people who is a fan, we will see the construction of it. eternally fan of stan winston
Sorry for the language, but I'm sure you'd feel the same way if people kept telling you about how easy your job is, when in reality you, and your colleagues, work your butt off.
Please Do a behind the scenes Baby t-Rex, how the animatronic process was done without cables, would be quite interesting !! We've already seen the animatronic t-rex the whole process, we want to see the baby t-rex if possible
wow ten years ago i have seen a bihend the scenes of Jurassic Park but int hat movie they havent talked about robots, it was telling that it was made by CGI and they talking about how fascinated will be in the future
lol, when i was little i use to think these were real .-. so yeah ya did a really good job cx but i have a question? is there going to be a Jurassic Park 4? I heard there will be but I'm not sure if its true or not? o;
Great job, I came here often to see the hard experience of create something bigger, robot/animatronic dinosaurs always inspired me to make my stuff, best regards!
The ironman suit the only thing to make it better put magnets in the suit and wear magnetic clothes then you could point your hand out and it would fly onto you I also told someone named james bruton this idea but he hasnt responded but ironman 3 comercial will explain what I mean
You're totally right, as a 3d animator and game developer, I know first hand how true these words are. However the essense of what he's saying is true, the "realism" of practical effects, so far, hasn't been matched in any CGI so far, e.g. Avatar's realism is a joke compared to this puppet.
Did I say it was easy? No, I meant that we don't see the "real deal" with visual effects anymore. The industry has become some complacent and over-saturated with CGI, that very little of it is impressive these days. I meant no disrespect to the work of creating computer-generated imagery, and if that is your profession and I offended you, then I apologize.

Stan Winston was a great man and lead these designers in making history. R.I.P Stan
Thousands of hours of labor for one scene. Wow

Evolved Turtle Productions like Jurassic Park, the lost world and Jurassic park 3
Exactly, people always say that, but don't realize that Jurassic Park itself used some early CGI alongside

And it translates to the movie how amazing they were to this day watching the movie and the T. rex scenes still amaze me!
You make it sound like the 90's is ancient. It's really not.

Amazing 👍
Despite that they didn't use realistic animatronic dinosaurs like that again for Jurassic World, It was still an entertaining movie to watch!
Honestly, I would buy a full length DVD with all these videos of Jurassic Park explaining the engineering behind the majestic T-REX
I love Jurassic park it is my all time favorite movie and just seeing this animatronic being built and come to life is magical for me

Legendary Creators Stuff 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I miss animatronics, CGI will never be as awesome.
Rexy is the star of JP 1 thru 3 in my opinion. JP is one of my favorite movies of all time.
That was insane- And insanely good.
I love these clips! The Making of Jurassic Park just scratched the surface. SWS digs deeper and I'm so grateful they are sharing this awesomeness!
Big fan of the first movie.
It was the first movie I saw twice in the theater as a matter of fact.
Fantastic, beats 100% cgi effects any day
When the T-Rex escapes, that is still one of the most tension building scenes I've ever witnessed!! Couldn't have been accomplished if the dino looked unrealistic!
WOW! That was the summit of that art!
I fell in love with Special Effects as a kid because of this movie. This was great to upload. Why now of all times? :)

Fixed! Thanks for the heads up, Jason. -Matt
TEAM UNIVERSAL!!!!!
Look inside your mechanical heart, you know it to be true!
2:52 Man, it's still impressive to watch that thing in action.
This would be the coolest job to have
Amazing, not any theme park open today has a better anamatronic dinosaur. Ive seen universals anamatronic dinosaurs and they dont even compare in the slightest to this.

Animatronics: a lost art in today's movies.

Very interesting, thank you for sharing this video!
plz, make at least one movie this way again
COOL VID

Do you guys happen to(for some odd reason) still have the copper mock-up you were playing with in the video?
Extra careful. - David
I love you guys. Keep up the great videos. All of this is really fascinating.
EPIC!
Is it just me or is the super slow Jurassic Park theme playing in the background?
Of course! We're an online school. Go to our website and check it out. - David
Just amazing!,
Point taken. I still wish someone had busted out at least an old super 8 camera and spent the $300 dollars or so to develop it all.
this is so cool!

In jurasic park did the doctor die?
As in Doctor Henry Wu? In the movie, no, but in the book he does. However his death was adapted into Fallen Kingdom.
Now I know why it's more realistic though made in year 90s . CGI now a day suck!
Wonder if jurassic world is gonna use the animaltronics...
It will, don't worry
even the Jurassic Worl Trailer looks like cheap crap
It was animated...
Saw the movie last week, only used animaltronics for two type of dinosaurs!
As someone who is hoping to go to a vfx school, these comments always make me sad.
why are you telling this to me ?
No. Sadly he passed away :(
i wish i have that one so i can stfu my noisy neighbors
Was this animatronic by any chance the exact one used on the ride??
