    Dormi, Jesu
This lullaby combines economy and restraint with warmth and an intensity of feeling.
    LYRICS:
    Dormi, Jesu! mater ridet,
    Quae tam dulcem somnum videt,
    Dormi, Jesu, dormi, Jesu blandule.
    Dormi Jesu, blandule.
    Si non dormis, mater plorat
    Inter fila cantans orat,
    Blande, veni, blande, veni, somnule.
Sleep, sweet baby! My cares beguiling:
    Mother sits beside thee, smiling;
Sleep, my darling, sleep, my darling, tenderly
(Words: Latin, origin unknown; English, S. T. Coleridge (1772-1834) Music: John Rutter)
    The John Rutter Christmas Album
This album gathers together most of the carols composed by John Rutter over the years, plus a sprinkling of Rutter arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a programme which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story.
John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.

There are times when you can't really describe how music makes you feel. This is definitely an example of that. To me it's the most beautiful song out there. It takes me back to the Christmas Eves of long ago, when my family and I were around a crackling fireplace and the moonlight would reflect off the blanketed snow outside.

Beautifully haunting and mysterious, yet reverent. The last 30 seconds or so of this piece are absolutely celestial. Mr. Rutter is indeed a gifted composer.

I wonder if in those last many measures the haunting dissonances are a portent of another kind of sleep that Christ would eventually experience: the sleep of death?

It's really wonderful! My choir sang "Candlelight Carol" during one of our last performances using a new arrangment. Write this in the search: you will love it for sure!
