Mass of the Children is a major work of English composer John Rutter and a non-liturgical Missa brevis, with the traditional Latin and Greek Mass text interwoven with several English poems. It was written after the sudden death of his son Christopher while a student at Clare College, Cambridge, where Rutter himself had studied.
The Finale uses additional text from the Agnus Dei which was not used in the preceding movement, as well as two prayer adaptations by Rutter and a poem by Bishop Thomas Ken (An Evening Hymn). Another of Ken's poems was incorporated into the Kyrie (A Morning Hymn), and a poem by William Blake (The Lamb, from Songs of Innocence and of Experience) is interwoven with the Agnus Dei.
The Mass for the Children was first performed on February 13, 2003, at New York's Carnegie Hall.

Everytime I hear a John Rutter work my cynical brain starts out complaining "oh here comes goofy ol' John Rutter doing his same old John Rutter things". But by the end my heart is moved and, more likely than not, there's a tear in my eye. No one does it like him.

Einfach wunderbar!

Pain brings out the art in some of us as in Rutter's beautifully composed and constructed mass...

Dona nobis pacem is a wonderful finial for this magical suite of ancient prayer forms.

Comparing this with his 'Gloria', which just sounds like regurgitated Walton to my ears, here is the true Rutter. Simple and sincere. Nothing forced. Yes, bringing Tallis's Canon is something that Britten did at the end of 'Noyes Fludde', and the figuration beneath is from Fauré's Requiem, but it took Rutter to combine the two.

    Reminds me of Benjamin Britten.

This reminds me of the composition style of film score composer Barry Gray. It's genuinely good music and doesn't at all sound like it's from 2003 - which is a good thing.
