- Warhammer Age Of Sigmar Third Edition is here, and so are the AOS 3.0 Dominion unboxing videos! Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy watching unboxing videos OR making them.
The reason we seem to get a zillion unboxing videos with every Warhammer release is a natural consequence of the way that GW interfaces with content creators. Games Workshop has established a system that causes otherwise-creative youtubers to make… unboxing videos. What a waste- let’s change it!
A lot of creators who I admire make unboxing videos, and they try their best... but a brighter future exists where they are able to post alternative videos on review day that are creative and inspiring and FUN! I want to see those snazzy new models get painted! :-) We just need to convince Games Workshop to make some very simple and logical changes to the way that they... well... I mean... I guess it's ok to dream! :-)

Hey games workshop, i hope you read these comments. Here's the thing - We're big fanboys. We love your minis, the world you have and everything that comes with it. But there's no other company in the world that don't care as little about the youtubers making videos that gives them hundreds of thousands in revenue and new customers every year as you do. None of us are asking much, but maybe a way to openly communicate with you, maybe help with information when ever we're making fun video projects... OR how about actually getting the releases you say you're gonna send in reasonable time, so when we schedule for them - set time aside to make content for free that takes 60 hours to make - we actually can. Thats all. We love you - get your sheitz together.
why complaining when you can act... Just don't make GW content anymore, if all of you on UA-cam decide to not make them free ads for the next months i'm sure you'll be in touch with some marketing guys rapidly. As a customer i act with my wallet, no more money for them untill they change what the community expect, simple no ?

There's plenty to agree with here but at the same time, part of watching UA-cam creators is seeing what they can make with the same access as a normal modeller. If UA-camrs are given too much it ceases to speak to the everyman that watches the content.
That said, a little extra time for completing reviews would be good.
Working in the video game industry I can assure you: GW is far from being special there, many big video game companies act exactly like that :D with money and importance comes arrogance, it's that simple

I'm glad that everything from the back of the box was in the box. I was worried that if I purchased this box some of the things from the back of the box wouldn't be in the box, but having watched you show me that all of the things that are on the back of your box were in fact in your box, it makes me feel comfortable that, were I to order my own box, then all the things on the back of that box would be in that box too.

@Epic indeed, one of my greatest concerns is that the things from the back of the box might not be in the box, even though the things from the back of the box in the video are in the box in the video. Perhaps GW made special effort to ensure that the things from the back of the box were in the box in the review box, but won't put the same concern into whether or not the things from the back of the box are in the boxes that they send out to consumers. I guess sometimes you just have to trust that the things from the back of box will be in the box, and hope that if the things from the back of the box are not in fact in the box then they will send you a replacement box where all the things from the back of the box are in fact in the box.
You know what miniature companies see the value of creative content creators? Literally all of them besides Games Workshop. Just about any other company will do whatever is in their means to help get good content out there and many of the smaller companies will go above and beyond. GW has great products but as a company they totally suck! Not as much as AK Interactive sucks, but they're definitely 2nd on the list. Hire good PR Games Workshop or let the current one do their job! Or just quit being so weird about stuff, why you gotta be so weird?

GW can only coast on their tagline of "we aren't as bad as we used to be" for so long. I wanted to see some really superb work that I know Goobertown is fully capable of and with the 48 hours given they basically got some grey plastic cat toys and an editorial on their broken system.
Exactly, it always feels so click baity and that's at no fault of the YTers that get these early copies, its like GW are forcing the click baity titles and videos every release by shortening these shitty time frames for the NDA.
it's ridiculous, imagine how immersed in the hobby new comers would be if painters ACTUALLY had the time to produce conversions, paintjobs, sub assembly videos as its released.

I was actually surprised the embargo dropped so early on this one, for the rest of us mortals this box is still 3 weeks away after all, usually content creators are allowed to post their stuff on pre-order date. Which makes me wonder if GW actually meant to give you more time this time, but missed the fact that everyone will want to post stuff as soon as possible because the timing is so important...
The timing seems strange to me too. Somebody wrote a 14 instead of a 19 on a forum somewhere?? who knows :-)
Worth noting that Ash used to work at GW in a middle management position. Probably knows people that get him a box even earlier, or genuine PR people.
He doesn't get the box earlier no, which is clear from his social media. The only thing he gets from having worked at GW is the fact they had those crazy painting deadlines all the time so he has become very good at speedpainting and planning. You see this across all of his projects too, not only GW stuff. In this particular case you see it by the fact that he "only" painted the Stormcasts - because 21 models is totally doable to finish in ~24 hours leaving enough time to play and record a game with minimal editing. He knows exactly which corners to cut making him very efficient. I know other people who've worked at GW too, and they share this mentality as well - maybe that's part of the problem of why content creators get so little time.
Agreed. I got laughed at by my LGS when I asked last weekend...and again this weekend if I could come pick up my copy.
Would be a good problem to have to have GW send me a pre-release copy.

Absolutely spot on Brent, you've summed up why I have zero interest in a Games Workshop NDA right now.
For anyone who isn't a full time youtuber your chances of being able to get something of any sort of value out in the time frame required are minimal. Each video takes me probably around 30 hours to shoot and edit. I value my sleep too much to be able to do that for them!

I think you put this wonderfully. But instead of expecting GW to make this change (which they NEVER will if things remain the same), I think that the consumers need to say "No." for once. GW will feel this and respond to it. I hope I'm wrong, but I think there are too many addicts in this hobby to really say no

Thank you for this Brent. It’s refreshing to hear GW called out for their deficiencies in utilizing and partnering with UA-cam content creators. It was the content creators that helped me fully embrace the hobby, be a better painter and dive deeply into the lore. People like you are invaluable to this hobby and GW needs to recognize this.
I love the banding together of all the model youtubers not only to combat GW but also just to aid each other. It’s lovely to see and heart warming to see all my favourite tubers in the comments of each other’s videos. Keep being awesome guys.
The cats reviewing the box is honestly the most accurate review I've seen. I love how wholesome this channel is.
One other point: Not giving enough time for a full, proper review is kinda the point. If the product isn't very good, the last thing product creators want is for people to tell their customers that on release day.
On the other hand, a quick first impression from a youtuber who wants to avoid offending them in the hope they'll continue to get free review copies in future, that's another story.
I think you're onto something. Hard to say if this was the original intent, but this is certainly the way that it seems to work out!
@@GoobertownHobbies It's one of the things that is constantly brought up when talking about video game reviews. A bad review can just mean you are cut off from access altogether.
It's like how it seems that 2/3 thirds of all copies of Cursed City went out to influencers, who then ended up with about 3 months of content that would have been useless to most gamers.

I'm going to be completely honest, Brent, I'm no longer on the hype train, I just watched because I enjoy your delivery. The Cursed City debacle was the death knell for me regarding GW - not being able to get it was a real bitter pill to swallow. Blackstone Fortress was what got me back into the hobby after near 10 years away, but I've discovered offerings of late from indie companies, and mini-agnostic games that I've really enjoyed. No worries, I'll still give you views, and likes, and appreciate what you do!

Speaking of Death Knell. GW has a kit named that. But sadly its out of production.
When the first ever plastic space marine figures were released, back in the dim and distant past of the late eighties, while UA-cam wasn't quite a thing GW ran an article showing all the weird things people at their studio had done with the figures. Including, if memory serves, not just weird weapon conversions and one-off character conversions and banner-bearers and a variety of paint jobs from expert to ordinary, but space marine daleks, space marines on Judge Dredd bikes, space marines with cocktail-stick spiked shoulder-pads, space marines with model-plane-propeller jump-packs... Obviously at one point they understood how much this kind of inspiration drives people to want to buy and model and paint and game with their figures.

Your points about review days are really well made.
This is the best perspective on early release review copies and the quality of content for review day. Brent you constantly produce such quality and how amazing to shout out the possibility of what could come from such a great community of painters. Wonderful names you called out and was nice to see built models but I'll always come for the narration and cat love!

I'm doing the rounds, getting my fill of the Dominion videos across the hobby channels, but I'm always interested in a Goobertown perspective! I must say I do like the direction of these minis, if nothing else 😁 and we'll see how the rules go in the coming months!
I loved this video Brent! As well as all the others obviously, but this one was special to me. Personally I love unboxing videos, both watching and filming them and I share your thoughts about this topic but I would also add the fact that most of the unboxing and review videos on UA-cam are focused on Games Workshop products only and that's a little bit sad to me, because there are tons of different amazing small companies out there that are completely neglected. Of course I'm not saying that we should stop making videos on GW products, but I think that at least we should make some space for the other companies too sometimes. I'm trying to do this with my channel, even though I'm incredibly small and almost irrelevant, but maybe someone watching my videos will discover some new miniatures and games and will help these small companies grow. Anyway, this comment is getting too long! Keep making inspiring videos like this!

I'm surprised with the pre orders being 2 weeks and them sending out early that they don't have the review embargo till release day or at least send them out two weeks prior to the pre-order so you can all assemble them and paint them properly

Hey Brent! Just wanted to let you know, I watched this video because of you. Not the box, not the minis, not the hype. I have no interest in anything regarding that product. I just love to hear your thoughts and criticism of the process.
I think you may have hit the nail on the head with this one. Imagine on "Review day" you have speed painting, dry brushing, competition winning, conversions, different paint schemes all coming from the countless channels that release that sort of content. You would be spoilt for choice and seeing your favourite creators making videos with their style and their take on the miniature would only hype the box even more.

Can you actually buy it somewhere? There would be money in such a thing, so I'm sure companies are working on it if it's actually viable... These 3d printing companies have quick development times and are perfectly willing to put out products that aren't fully tested heh.
@@GoobertownHobbies Not buyable yet, and I don't have the money myself to get it manufactured myself, otherwise I absolutely would. (with safety-testing, of course)
@@Serpsor Yeah. It's not even like a big/complex recipe either, I just don't know the chemical-safety stuff.
But it's just 75 parts styrene monomer(stabilized), 100 parts polystyrene dissolved in the monomer, and a photoinitator. It's super simple.
If I was a chemist myself I'd get the materials and actually test it out, but I'm just a poor dude who wants it to work.

GREAT VIDEO BRENT!!!! I really hope someone at GW sees this video because BRENT IS RIGHT!!! If GW sent me product ahead of time ALL I WOULD DO is make content devoted to those sets. Right now I don't because often by the time I can get the sets and paint them, the hype has died down!!!

Good video. I saw Tabletop Minions first impressions video in my recommendations list, almost watched that, but decided I wasn't worried since I don't actually play any Warhammer, I just enjoy watching painters/builders and game play thoughts about roleplaying in general.
Then I saw your title in my recommendation and I said, well, that'll get me all the info I need on what's in the box and, some sweet commentary about. The models look swell, looking forward to seeing all the creators I watch on here paint them up nice and neat. (And then sit in my head dwelling on my own pile of plastic I want to paint, but over-think and stress over)
I'm on the fence of going down the WH rabbit hole. I'll say this, channels like this one really inspire me to take the plunge. I might buy this box when it comes out and content creators like Brent are the people to thank for the amazing, hardwork and creativity

Seems like you got all the youtubers to Agree with you. All you have to do now is setup a youtuber collective (kuchkuchunionkuchkuch) and work with GW as a collective. Worst case they won't sent you free stuff anymore, so you will have to buy what you would otherwise buy anyways. Best case scenario GW will actually listen to all of you and you get a fair deal.

Hello, I have just a few minis and honestly I have not completed any of them. I bought Jazza’s box and I somehow managed to find your channel. I have tried watching others doing mini videos but I find myself getting irritated with the loud obnoxious content and lack of model building. Brent your videos are simply wonderful. I enjoy watching your content even when I have no plans for purchasing the mini’s featured. I wish you only the best in getting any big company to listen to you, work with you? Miracle is that realm! I hope that I am wrong and that they listen and contact you for better videos in the future. I am going to keep watching your videos and hope that I am able to digest your instructions to enrich my mini building experience. Thank you for creating this superior content and well just being a stand-up guy. Have a wonderful day.
Hey hey! I see you posting on all my videos and I want you to know that I appreciate the heck outta you. Anyway, I'm glad that you're finding some value in these videos, even if you haven't really started painting yet. perhaps someday... Otherwise, I'm just glad that you're here hanging out! As for GW, they have a long history of operating behind the times, I'm assuming that they'll eventually catch up and figure out how to usefully coordinate with youtubers... eventually... maybe :-)
I definitely agree with you. I love seeing one or two unboxings, especially because I have limited storage space, so knowing the dimensions of the box and how everything is stacked in it and how much I can do with assembling some and still having other things on the sprue is actually quite useful. But what I love to see more are painted miniatures and some people explaining the rules in detail. Not even battle reports, but just a step by step visual of the rules and some army explanations to go with what's in the box. I recently got into Necromunda and those things really helped me decide on a few things. I don't easily learn from the book itself, so watching someone explain the rules (especially with focus on what to pay attention to or what has changed) is often much more useful. But I totally understand that that's hard with just 2 days of 'review' time.

The cynic in me assumes GW cynically thinks that more time to put together a proper review is more time the reviewer has to talk about flaws in the product. That they keep the time so short to force content creators to put together unboxing videos, which serve the actual purpose GW has for sending review copies: getting UA-cam channels to post videos mentioning the _existence_ of the product that will reach the eyes of all their subscribers.
The more charitable part of me just assumes GW are incompetent and apathetic about how they could be improving. They've posted record profits, and everyone is talking about their products. Why should they change?
I don't think your first take is cynical at all. If Games Workshop could guarantee that all reviews were positive, I'm sure they would send review packages out earlier. "All publicity is good publicity" only goes so far.

Your is not a cynical comment. It is just basic marketing: “good or bad, what’s important is that people talk about it. I don’t buy AoS, but now I know about the existence of this boxset. I could not care less but I know it exists, and one day or another I may mention it to some of my friends who is into fantasy minis. In this the marketing stint has already been achieved imho.
A lot of folks say it's not cynical because it's just a common business practice. But something being normalized doesn't make it any less cynical or scummy. To say otherwise is just the Capitalist Realism talking.

This is by far my favorite hobby/Warhammer channel! Watching your videos feels like relaxing on the beach. As an anxious wreck, an evening of listening to your videos while painting models is an absolute gift of a night.
Very nice video and spot on with your observations about how much the community could do do for these products. GW are very linear with their painting tutorials (not a bad thing necessarily but you can just look at the box art if you like that style), open it up to the entire community and you’re going to see something very amazing.

This was great. I love how candid you were with your opinion. Transparency about what goes in behind the scenes is valuable too. We as the viewer and consumer should be aware as much as everyone else I think

when I first worked for GW , '95-2000, we got new releases weeks before release, they had to be built and painted so they could be in the cabinet before the shop opened on the Saturday morning they came out. I went back to my old store, now a one man store, a few yrs ago as a part time/relief worker, that had all gone, understandably. Frankly I'm amazed the manager gets anything in the cabinets these days
Given GWs recent track record, the fact everything that was meant to be in the box was in the box is a win.
Or, in the case of Cursed City, that the box ever existed.
