I spent 9 hours watching Dragon Ball Super: Superhero to find every hidden detail. Yes that means I watched it at .16x speed not .25x. So trust me when I say, these hidden details get crazy! The movie starts with a flashback sequence animated in 2D. This has plenty of Manga Panel recreations - so here’s just a few of my favorites!
During this flashback sequence we see Dr. Gero’s original lab being destroyed during Goku’s attack on the Red Ribbon Army Base and what is possibly Gero’s first Supercomputer - similar to the one that made Cell. Notably, Gero already looks extremely old, I wonder how old he actually is. We then see Magenta standing on a box possibly showing a similar insecurity regarding his height like his father - Commander Red had. After that we see an android hand forming in a recreation of Dragon Ball Z’s OP during the Cell Saga which seamlessly transitions into a recreation of the chapter cover Dragon Ball 339 or Dragon Ball Z 145 in the Viz release. In the flashback of Cell we see he has his Super Saiyan style aura from the anime - which is more evidence for the people that think Cell is a Super Saiyan. Watch the video for more!

6:14 The way the Trunks vs Frieza fight happens in just a matter of seconds is probably the most accurate and the most amazing scene I've ever seen considering it's from a human perspective.
You can feel the speed of how he slashes Frieza and blows him up, that's a really nice detail

Sure, gohan may have went beast regardless, buuuut people would probs be dead. Like its just basic "thanks for the help guys, that was tough" diolague. Doesnt imply some sort of power scale or something. Neither does his comment about goku and vegeta. All that says is, gohan beast is stronger than goku and Vegeta, nothing else to gleem from it one way or the other.

The meditation thing is definitely the biggest fail in the movie, they completely swapped Goku and Vegeta's personalities for that. Goku is as you say, the one who understands the value of Meditation, honing the mind in addition to the body. Vegeta is the impatient one who thinks you can only get stronger by battle and stress.
Completely, it makes me so mad.
I think Goku just meditates as a form of clearing his mind, not necessarily training. He uses it to center himself, but for Vegeta to call it training is where Goku has issues, and we see at the beginning of Super he does image training while moving.
@@zawardoll King Kai specifically says in the Buu ark that Goku finished his physical training a week ago and now is honing his mind with intense meditation.
Roshi tried to teach Goku and Krillin about it, he emphasised a balance of training and rest as optimum and that stuck but it was Popo who actually drilled meditation into him successfully.
@@Goatcha_M Meditating is not training, it's a way to be mindful and contemplate and assimilate and disperse stuff in your mind, even in real life people consider it a way to calm one's self and not to train, and aside from that, literally it makes more sense that vegeta thinks it's training because this vegeta is literally taken right after the granola arc, meaning that for one, he obviously did spirit control training and there was a lot of ki control with your eyes closed, so that means that for him he might just be focusing on controlling ki and goku doesn't get that, or for seconds he thinks it's training because that's what he's been put through then and doesn't think of meditating as to clear one's mind.
So no, king kai never specifically says that he's training by meditating, training and honing are two different things after all, honing works closer to sharper as a synonim and training works closer to repeated movements as synonim, so careful with the english in that case.
@@josuke5966 I will fight anyone in the comments that says this one thing one more time, it makes so much sense if you think about it in an open minded way and have actually meditated for once in your life time, dragon ball is still at base, an anime about martial arts, martial artists don't use meditating as a way to intensely focus the mind, but instead get the mind loose and clearing all the unnecesarry thoughts, so failure, or not being good enough, or needing to be better, it's basically decompressing the mind and body by staying extremely still and letting all of those worries, all of the progress, be assimilated in a way in which you won't have to think twice about remembering it, it's a journey with yourself, in the way that meditating isn't done because it's training, but instead, it's done because you want to do it, it's nice to do it, it shouldn't be a bother to do it, you're getting into it not because you need to do it constantly, but because by doing it when your mind is plagued with thoughts, you can order yourself, it's not a way of training, it's a literal way of calming down, if calming down is training, then I swear to god I have been doing maths for nothing, I have been improving at games for nothing, I have been trying to adapt philosophical ideals and turning them into wisdom for nothing, instead of calling it like that, because the only reffrence to meditating that you have is unironically dragon ball, maybe try to actually figure out what the source material is actually taking from, because all that goku does? all that vegeta does? all that training on kami's lookout in db? that's all taken basically taken from the fact that bruce lee exists, and many other chinese traditions and karateka philosophies have been adopted into the db world, ultra instinct is literally called "flow state" in our world, in which you basically don't have to actively word out a thing in your mind that your body wants to do, so it's like doing a kick by just sorta feeling like doing a kick, or doing a punch because you sorta feel like it, literally that is it, it's not actually a "dodge" automatically button or hit without thinking button, it's doing everything that you learned, and here comes the quote "man is a thinking reed" and turning it into pure intuitiveness, so not having to think about doing combos, not having to think twice about what dodging is, not needing to think that you're not gonna be able to dodge because that's the only thing you're focused about, so this is where I end this off, good luck in your research

Cell Max isn't only a reference to past Dragon Ball material! The earlier shot of his tail thrashing around in the water is a reference to Shin Godzilla's first form, which is only ever seen as a tail thrashing around out of the water, and the shot where he launches all the purple lasers from his back is reminiscent of a climactic action setpiece from that movie where the titular kaiju wipes out a fleet of bomber planes in a similar manner, down to what I believe to be the same exact laser firing sound effects first used for Destoroyah's micro-oxygen beams in Godzilla vs Destoroyah. In fact, Cell Max's tail being an asymmetrical mass of laser-firing orifices could also be a Shin Godzilla reference, although since it's not a literal secondary/spare head on the end of his tail I personally have less faith in this one.

The manga has actually fixed Goku outright saying meditation isn't training at all. He instead questions why Vegeta is meditating out of all people and Vegeta says meditation is the key to conserving energy and their physical ability has peaked.
It is still odd that he explains it does this by relaxing before attacks, as if Goku wouldn't learn this from before.

The dedication to look for these references is very awesome it was nice seeing some of these in the theaters when spotted especially during Gohan vs Cell max when he did that uppercut
A few things, the Roshi students who learned Ki blasts before Flight were trained by someone who specifically chooses not to fly. While it makes sense that there was a different drone for Cell, I also believe if the drone leaves when the fighting ends, which explains why they have Vegeta in his Baman shirt, with Goku in a Gi instead of the Yardrat clothes and Gero has not yet seen Trunks here, it's possible that Gero doesn't know Super Saiyan is what it is and by the time he can put it all together it's too late.
Another point worth noting: Dende already knew how to fly but is never implied to have learned how to shoot ki blasts.
Flight First might just be the Namekian Way

The real answer here is that in the beginning of Dragonball Toriyama did not intend on having people fly... that's why Goku gets the flying nimbus which only the pure of heart can ride and why Mercenary Tao throws a tree and jumps on it to get around... the whole point was to limit people from flying because it takes away from the story telling and makes the world a smaller place... even after Goku reveals that he can fly in the 23rd tournament he barely ever uses the ability again until he's on his way to fight Vegeta and Nappa...
@@reptilian_geneticist in part because he's not very good at flight at that point. Prior to his death, Goku's personal flight is slower than the Nimbus.

I feel like Piccolo didn't want to teach Pan ki blasts yet as she is an excitable 4 year old, and he wanted to make sure she had the discipline to not immediately blast everything in sight. So he wasn't saying "you can only learn ki blasts after you can fly" and more "I won't teach you ki blasts until you prove to me you can control both ki, and yourself."

id think that with so much experience piccolo probably sees flight as a more useful base skill than ki blasts. as a situation where pan can otherwise fly away even a short distance might keep her safer than her attempting to fight.

I think Goku’s smile at the end is just a reference to Goku always enjoying fighting/meeting stronger people. So Vegeta beating him here is just giving him more motivation to get stronger
Little disappointed you mentioned Gohan dropping the sensu (like the potara earing) .... However didn't connect it to. -Gohan doesn't need his glasses when he goes SSJ, he takes them off before he transforms. Given, each time he misses catching objects, he's in his base form.

Idc what anyone says, im in love with the cgi style for this movie, i love the look of the film, the fight choreography, its just so underrated
The CGI style is truly great, maybe some of the best CGI in anime EVER. However, most fans prefer 2D just because it fits dragon ball more. Plus, the CGI isn't worth it tbh, its so expensive. The budget for this movie was around 35 million due to the CGI while the Budget for Broly was only around 10 million.

Honestly, aside from some close-ups with Piccolo, the CGI artstyle was so well done, I kept forgetting it wasn't actually 3D.

i don't think Goku's smile at the end is meant to be sly, it's just him being the happy go lucky goku who doesn't get mad over losing. he was chill when he lost to Tenshinhan, he wanted to fight vegeta again and spared him with a smile on his face when asking krillin, he smiled when giving up against cell, and when he lost to beerus. those are just examples that come to mind in the moment, i'm sure there's more
I'm pretty sure he was smiling at various points when fighting Kid Buu as well, despite everything that happened and everything that was still at stake. Not another example of him smiling when losing, but rather another example of Goku smiling in spite of being faced with realities that would prevent almost anyone else from smiling.
I think the reason piccolo wanted pan to master flying before ki blasts is because he wanted pan to be able to doge before attacking

There is also a Easter egg when Gamma 1 fired a laser shot at SSJ Gohan. The way Gamma 1 was posed was the same as SSG Vegeta’s pose when he fired a KI blast at base Broly in an effort to kill him, and said “What a waste.”
I wonder if the reason why Gamma 1 and 2 don't have infinite energy like 17 and 18 is because 17 and 18 are cyborgs and not full robots, but you could also say that Dr.Gero just had a smarter way of making androids
Or Hedo was just pioneering new technology rather than directly iterating on his grandfather's work.
We know how strong Android 17 has become, but Hedo doesn't and even with how strong 17 is, the Gammas are stronger.
Piccolos clothes dissappearance ability means that he tosses away his clothes purely for entrance and swag purposes

Another small detail I noticed about Goten and Trunks fusing is that in the poster for the movie, their fingers also don't match up perfectly, hinting that they would fall the fusion.
I really wanted to see properly fused adult Gotenks for at least a moment. We'll probably finally see it in canon for the first time either in the next movie or when DBS continues.

Another thing to note about Hachimaru. At least in the dub, he's specifically a normal bee turned into a machine. So it's an android level bee. Between him and the super saiy-ants, I think Cell is gonna have some competition as the ultimate bugman. I also find it hilarious that Hedo makes a speech about how he's going to take Magenta's money and run off after Hachimaru stings the guy. It's not too far off from Colonel Violet taking all of Red's money as his empire falls in the original series. Poor Magenta died as he lived, getting robbed by those close to him.
The part where Beerus thought Chelai was cute is one of the funnier parts for me, mostly because Whis clarifies Beerus has a type, which I of course assumed to be cute aliens with white hair. (not too unlike some attendant we know!)

Also in the English dub during Gohan’s transformation into beast they overlap his scream with Teen Gohan’s scream when he transforms into SSJ2. Super cool detail
Fun fact: When Piccolo nearly gets killed by Cell max, he seems to turn into and out of his potential unleashed form. This could just be lighting but it also might be how he was trying to alarm Gohan of how severe the situation was while trying not to let Cell max actually kill him.
At 20:06 when you mentioned that Trunk’s hair goes from blue to purple when fusing into gotenks, I took this as a reference to the fact that Bulma dyes her hair blue, since it’s actually that lavender color z Trunks had in the manga. Leaving me to believe that Trunks also dyes his hair blue.
22:43 It is explained, after Gamma 1 fades away, Piccolo explains that his charge weakened Cell Max enough for the group to take on and win.

In the latest manga chapter, Gamma 1 and 2 is based from Trunks and Gotenks (they are having there Great Saiyaman era). So they are probably the one’s who Dr. Hedo idolizes so much
the whole krillen reminding piccolo he could grow both made me mad and made me laugh because i always made a joke about him forgetting he could grow during parts that would've possibly benefitted from it

Piccolo received Nail's memories as a data dump, a simple download as he assimilated Nail.
Kami is different. Kami is Piccolo and Piccolo is Kami. Everything Kami and Piccolo experienced are the current Piccolo's actual personal memories
The assimilation process was the same though and the memories were a "data dump" in both. Still doesn't explain Dende so the scene is just an oversight in the script. No need to look for a deeper answer.

Piccolo and Kami are two parts of the same whole reuniting. It's not one person fusing another, it's recompiling your being to its complete state.
Nail was someone else Piccolo just scooped up. Meanwhile Kami was Piccolo
To add a little bit to the 8 thing and Hachimaru, the spy drone created by Hedo.
"Hachi" is also the word for bee or wasp, and "maru" is a common suffix added to a word to make a name out of it.
It's a Wasp drone name "Waspy" with an 8 in its display because because "eight" sounds the same as "wasp" in Japanese.

The movie actually does explain the line with Piccolo claiming they never could have won without the Gammas' help. In an attempt to console the pair Piccolo then says "Thanks to him, Cell's attack power dropped". This is in reference to Gamma 2's sacrificial charge that ripped off Cell Max's arm. Granted this is in the Sub version of the movie rather than the english dub so I'm not sure if there are differences.

Yeah, everyone acts like Gohan soloed when literally everyone attacked and weakened Cell. The Gotenks Volleyball cracked his skull, Gamma 1 obliterated his arm, Piccolo beat the crap out of him, and Gohan finished the job.

The height thing is something I will finally choose to defend. It's true that Goku, Gohan, and Trunks all grew slowly, but let's not forget some key details. Gohan was still short in the Cell saga, then the time skip had him grow much taller. Goku also had a similar instance in the 3 year time skip before fighting our current Piccolo. Trunks is a bit more difficult in terms of explanation, but remember, he is the son of Vegeta and Bulma: neither of them are that tall to begin with. However, it should be noted that Vegeta was only ever seen as a kid's height, and then we later see his adult form at max height.
I believe that Trunks' growth being different to present Trunks is largely due to the way he had to live his life in the future, similar to how Future Gohan is more buff than our own. The appearance itself signifies a great stress that they went through as opposed to the power they are gaining. Proof of this would be how Gohan vs Kibito would still be much stronger than future Gohan despite being out of practice. This can also explain the buff aspects of the main 4 Saiyans in the Cell saga, seeing as the Room of Spirit and Time was regarded as a really strenous and dangerous training method.
So uh we just not gonna mention the fact that the way Cell Max took down piccolo was essentially a reversed version of future gohans death to the androids?

The amount of easter eggs from the manga and other stuff from DB is amazing. It would be neat if when we got more movies (because let's face it, we will) we got more easter eggs, eventually having all of the iconic moments in DB being contained in movies, but yes this would take a few movies to fulfill. Also hopefully more movies would offer more room for answering unanswered questions, and rectifying slight errors.

To be fair Kami & Piccolo were originally the same person so It makes sense for Piccolo to inherit Kami's memories, and would explain why he doesn't have Nail's memories. The Universe 6 Namekians absorbed a whole bunch of Namekians for the fight and it makes sense they wouldn't get all their memories since they would probably be unable to fight due to memory overload.
Also a fun idea. When Original Cell exploded the force was enough to destroy the planet. This is probably cause of when Cell was created Dr.Gero's plans for world domination were already ruined beyond repair. However when designing the new Cell Max the Idea was to create an enforcer that could potentially be mass-produced so the explosive power was probably scaled down to ensure he didn't destroy the whole planet since the Red Ribbon army could still rule it.
In the dub its stated that Gamma 2's kick weakened Cell enough for them to beat him, which means without 2's sacrifice even beast might not have been enough to beat Cell Max
It's also said in the japanese version, odd he missed that detail
That reminds me that Vegeta says that he finally defeated Goku at the end of the movie... while he never actually lost a single duel against Goku, at least in the Dragonball original manga.
During the Saiyan arc, there was a team up against Vegeta, and Goku alone would have lost as soon as Vegeta turned into an Oozaru and they more or less never had a duel until the Majin Vegeta part... in wich Vegeta eventually tricked Goku to go fight Buu. Vegeta never actually lost a one on one fight against Goku.
