Crisis Averted: Surviving 6 Days on the Open Ocean - Episode 85

  • With 280 nautical miles to go during our 6 day straight sail from Huatulco to Barre de Navidad, life on the ocean seems pretty good. But things can change pretty quickly and with a tropical storm chasing us down and squally weather we add a bit of excitement to our passage. We get into trouble with our spinnaker for the first time and Gary has to jump overboard.

    I am an armchair sailor, living vicariously through watching sailing channels. I always wanted and actually planned to sail "some day" but the opportunity has gone by. I find the key to success for sailing channels is the people involved have to be likable and we must get interested in their lives so we care. You guys are doing a great job!!

    Between the spinnaker, the birds wanting to be new crew members, and getting a little 'loopy at sea' looks like it was a successful passage. Can't wait to learn what the oil pressure gauge issue is. Gary will figure it out now that he is in port! Kudos to Brook's new bathing suit. 👍🏻

    I am enamored with you two, I watch several sailing channels as well as yours, but I feel you two have a special chemistry that becomes addicting. I find myself pulling for you at every twist and turn.... what an adventure you are on. You two are putting the work in to become true seasoned sailors and these experiences will pay dividends in both the near and distant futures. Great to see such a talented, logical, and methodical team conquer this thing we call sailing. Keep up the great work and thank you for inviting us into your world.

    When the wind is up, you have to blanket the spinnaker with the main, you can’t just muscle it into collapsing with the snuffer. Once it is in the lee of the main, it will collapse sufficiently that you can snuff it.
    You’re not the only ones who needed to learn this lesson. Been there, done that; and when I screwed up, the result was a ruined spinnaker pole.

    • @SailingOneLife
      @SailingOneLife  Рік тому

      Ah a ruined pole?! That's a real bummer. Yep, we knew it would happen sometime. Especially since we are new to using the spinnaker. Thanks for the advice! We hope to purchase a pole soon!

    • @markhamstra1083
      @markhamstra1083 Рік тому

      @@SailingOneLife I wouldn’t bother with a spinnaker pole on a cruising boat - they’re really only worth it on racing boats. A bowsprit, on the other hand, will allow you to sail sufficiently deep with an asymmetrical chute, and with far less hassle than a spinnaker pole.

    Just wanted to let you know that i just subscribed. Ill take a minute to share why.
    I've always fantasized of living on a boat. A Power boat. Although I've chosen to start my new life on a power boat, i always find myself watching the sailing channels. Let's be honest.. It's simply just waay more romantic.
    So, the reason i subscribed to your channel after the one video, all be it a long a$& video (lol), i kept looking at the time left because I was dreading for it to end! I read a handful of comments, and know my 1st impression was spot on.... The reason is your attitudes. Smiles for miles. , Absolutely felt you were real. Genuinely nice people. When i come in from a hard day, i can sit down to an episode and relax.
    I am waiting on a survey to close on my new home and soon ill be on water. 🤞🙏.

I wish Brooke had a sister, not interested in her brother. 😂 Don't know if you know, Hawksbill restaurant at Harbor Town is closed, supposedly because of a huge rent increase. Gonna miss their Bloody Mary's.
    Regarding your extreme healing from previous episodes. I have watched all of your videos. I know your headsail is old, but it looks like your center of effort is really high on your headsails. I'm not there, so... Ask Brian and Karin #S/V Delos or Bill and Grace #S/V Calico Skies to take a look, or ask a professional rigger. Sometimes people set their furler too high because it makes for a prettier sail and to prevent chaffing. Before you guys leave Puerto Penasco check this out.

    Seems like a hectic passage indeed. Have you figured out what's going on with the engine oil pressure? Definitely put a mechanical pressure gauge on a Tee fitting near the engine in addition to the existing one. On our bus I'm planning to have the factory gauges refurbished and add some additional mechanical gauges at the engine bay to make sure gauges agree if there seems to be an issue. The joys of diesel ownership.

    Not a criticism, personally I'd get rid of that spinnaker sock and wool it. When raising and lowering, unfurl the headsail and that will create a windshadow that makes the kite much more manageable.

    • @SailingOneLife
      @SailingOneLife  Рік тому

      Our headsail and spinnaker use the same sheet routing and blocks into the primary cockpit winches. Nature of the center cockpit design of the boat. It would take a lot of expensive modifications and custom blocks to make it possible to fly both at the same time, so for now it's gotta be one or the other.

    • @SailingOneLife
      @SailingOneLife  Рік тому

      Hey there! Thanks for the comment. I (Brooke) was on watch during this time. Since the Genoa was already out, I opted to start with it heavily reefed and see how the boat handled it from there. I could have furled it all the way in and put out the stay sail but we seemed pretty balanced with the reefed Genoa.

    • @markhamstra1083
      @markhamstra1083 Рік тому +1

      A snuffer is not meant to force a spinnaker to collapse. In light winds, you can douse a spinnaker by just pulling the snuffer over it, but that won’t work in heavier winds. Instead, you have to first take a fairly direct downwind course and then sheet in the spinnaker in the lee of the mainsail (after easing the pole all the way forward if you are not using an asymmetrical chute tacked to the bow.) With the spinnaker blanketed by the main, it will collapse on its own, allowing you to pull the snuffer over it. In short, a snuffer won’t work under significant load, so you’ve first got to get rid of the wind load that is trying to keep the spinnaker inflated.

    • @SailingOneLife
      @SailingOneLife  Рік тому

      We often fly the asymmetrical by itself without the main, and we have seen extremely experienced world-cruisers do the same. So, in these situations, we usually just release the tack line to unload the spinnaker. The sock we have is a pretty old and sub-par design, and has a thin plastic rod bent into a ring at the bottom. This sometimes allows the spinnaker to wrap around the thin ring and jam up, as it did in this case. A new sock with a nice fiberglass cone at the bottom is on our wish-list.

    • @markhamstra1083
      @markhamstra1083 Рік тому

      @@SailingOneLife A lot of experienced cruisers do things that I’ll call lazy when I am feeling charitable, dumb when I’m not. Sailing extremely unbalanced with just a headsail is one of them. There is no good reason to give up the additional boat speed and control that using your main will provide - not to mention better crew comfort and rig support. Just because you see someone else do something, that doesn’t mean that is a good idea. Sometimes it just means that they have been fortunate enough to not run into trouble from their bad practices for long enough that they can no longer recognize their mistakes.
      As for snuffers, not even the best ones in brand new condition will allow you to successfully force them to work in a way that they were not intended to. When the wind is up beyond a certain point, you have to be able to get the spinnaker to collapse on its own, you can’t just force a snuffer over an unblanketed sail.
      Before purchasing a new snuffer, you should also look into investing in a top-down, continuous line furler. While that is a more expensive option, it can be used with multiple flying sails, and is a much better means of controlling them.

    Where would UA-cam be without clickbait titles? Was the 'crisis' was a faulty oil pressure gauge, reading too high? OK, I take it back, it was the stuck spinnaker. If you have to douse it by hand, probably better to plan ahead, open the V-berth hatch first, then just stuff the sail directly down the hole, rather than get it soaked and THEN put it down the hole.

    IF YOUR GAUGE AND SENSOR FOR OIL PRESSURE ARE ELECTRONIC , MUST BE FALSE CONNECTION OR FAULTY SENSOR !
    YOUR ENGINE HAS A GEAR PUMP AND AS YOU INCREASE RPMS. IT INCREASE OIL PRESSURE ,TILL THE HIGH LIMIT ABOUT 65 LBS AVERAGE , IF YOUR ENGINE OIL PRESSURE FAILS ,FOR SURE YOU ALREADY LOST THAT ENGINE OR SEIZED ! SENSORS BY VIBRATION FROM DIESEL CYCLES ARE MORE VICTIMS OF DAMAGE ,AND SO ALSO ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS , TO ASSURE GOOD CONNECTORS WELD THEM WITH SILVER , ALSO CURLY THE WIRES AT ENGINE SIDE TO CREATE A VIBRATION ABSORBER , FIND A RUBBER BOOT THAT FITS AT ONE END THE SENSOR AND THE OTHER SMALL AS THE DIAMETER OF THE CABLE ,THAT WILL DEFINITELY WILL ALSO PROTECT FROM VIBRATION THE CABLE/ SENSOR CONNECTION ! SORRY TO INTRUDE , BUT DIESEL ENGINES MUST HAVE HEAVY MOTOR MOUNTS TO ABSORB 3 TIMES THE VIBRATION OF A GASOLINE ENGINE , THEREFORE THE ENGINE MOUNTS MUST BE MADE WITH INNER SPRINGS OR LIQUID FILLED ! ONE WAY TO KNOW IS RUN THE ENGINE AND IF VIBRATION TRANSMIT ALL OVER YOUR CABIN , THAT IS THE ISSUE , AND VIBRATION IS THE ENEMY OF ANYTHING HANGING OR ATTACHED TO THOSE HARMONICS CREATING PREMATURE FATIGUE !
    IF THE ENGINE IS GASOLINE STILL CHECK CONNETTIONS, TEST OIL PRESSURE MUST BE NUMBER ONE PROCEDURE AT THE MARINA !
    I FOLLOW YOUR ABCDS OF SAILING WITH BAD FUEL OR PUMP, OR BROKEN SAILS , WATER LEAKS , 45 KNOTS WINDS OR 10 FT. WAVES , BUT I NOTICED YOUR SKINS ARE GETTING MORE LIKE BRASS TYPE ,EXPOSSED TO MOTHER NATURE ,SUN TAN, BEER , AND MAHI !
    ALWAYS GOOD VIBES , KEEP HYDRATED, AND USE LOTS OF SUN TAN LOTION , BAJA FISH TACOS ARE IN MEXICO THE BEST ! BEST OF GOOD TIMES AND WINDS OF FRIENDSHIP FROM SO .CAROLINA COAST !
