The video captured from Calico and Delos combined with your shared video was terrific. The sailing video of One Life with the third person video from Calico and Delos on the dingy excursions were so cool to see. Good luck with the data storage moving forward. Well, there you are!! Funny that I sent a message yesterday wondering where and what had happened. So sorry about the lost data and the lost videos with Gary's parents, that is a huge loss. What a great video! Brought back so many memories from 10 years ago... My father and I were on a 36' Cat SUNJET headed to Hawaii and we were tied up right across the way from Delos the night night before they departed. Pretty cool to see them at the starting point and with you guys as well! (if you see me out there, BCC JUNESSA, give me a call on the radio!)

So glad to see you back. I do hope you have at least two external drives and are keeping them properly backed up and have a brand new spare as well. I've been saying this to people for at least 40 years without success, IT is not IF a hard drive will fail it is WHEN it WILL fail, and they ALL FAIL. Please anybody who actually reads comments, take this lesson to heart before you lose something priceless.

Hey ya all Miss Brooke got a tip for ya that I do in bucket laundry put a lid on it and a line on a 5 gallon bucket put clothes n washing powder in it throw it overboard and let the wave action do your churning does a great job and saves your arms!! Fair winds n seas ya all

But seriously, be safe. I wish the best for you, Bill and Grace, Brian, Karin, and Sierra. I really like the collaboration between the three channels. Heard from Bill and Grace a couple of days ago, so I believe that you are still in Penasco. If you all leave in the next couple of months, please be careful. This time of year through March are the El Norte winds. I almost lost my boat several years ago here. I experienced continuous waves or 15' to 25' for hours in the Sea of Cortez. It was not pretty. Waves breaking over your bow and flooding the cockpit. Pick your weather window, listen to the locals, and stay on the west side as you head back south.
Went to the Sunoco on Courtenay across from Dollar Tree and got Imperial (Pura Vida) Beer $5.99!, thinking of you all and how jealous I am.

Bummer about the hard drive. I know how you feel. In slow motion I watched my mobile device which had raw video from one of my cameras, skip across my soles bounce off the top of my water tank, do a one and a half full twist and drop through the open inspection hatch on the tank.
If I had known I could have offered up some B roll of those locations, but you guys made do and produced a great video.

When I worked for Boeing Computer Services, the rule you sadly experienced is, “Data is secure only when stored on three separate devices, in three geographically separate locations.” That’s not easy when your home is a boat. So sorry for the loss. Ya can only do what you can do.
Hey there! Thanks for the kind words. It is much more difficult dealing with data on a boat. Hopefully we have all our issues sorted now by having multiple backups!
I agree with others that this is one of your best despite losing the drive. I hope you can repeat that voyage at least. I was surprised with the amount of tidal currents and between-island turbulence the short time I as there. But because of the shape of the Cortez , I guess the tides get concentrated the further up, so we experienced that when the moon is at about 30 degrees up the waves start rolling and it rock and rolled for 3 hours or so. Then again on the way out. It was a trip to see the moon rise and feel the rollies come on and sense that connection. ;-o

What a bummer to have lost so much footage... As a viewer it's disappointing, but I'm sure not nearly as disappointing as it is for you. We'll all get by just knowing you are safe and still sailing with your buddy boats and knowing that more great footage will follow. I'm mostly saddened for you losing your family footage, which is much more a personal loss than one for all your viewers... Glad Delos and Calico Skies were able to help you fill in the gaps for everyone, but we can't go back and fix the past so now it's on to the present and future videos and I'll be here like all your other followers, waiting with baited breath for then next installment!!

As a computer expert with over 60 years' experience, I find that those people who get into trouble just did not think that hard drives and PCs are not infallible and live to regret it. When is a back-up not a back-up?
When you only have one of it and that copy is on another hard drive!
Yep, we both knew better! Which is what we think hurt the most! Oh well, must power through and do better! Won't make this mistake again!
Sea of Cortez... what an awesome place to cruise. Hope to experience that one day. The data loss... believe it or not we lost our wedding day footage because of a hard disk crashing... it actually broke WHILE I was backing it up... all gone!!! Oh well at least the marriage is still going strong 🙂

With all the movements of the boat and the type of hard drives you use currently (spinning discs hard drives) will all eventually fail. I would recommend you start purchasing solid state hard drives. And make sure your laptop has solid state storage as well, otherwise it won’t be long before that fails too. Great content keep on keeping on.
We would love to have all SSDs! We have around 50TB of footage saved on hard drives. External SSDs are about $60/TB (Amazon prices which we don't have access to anyway). That would be $3,000 in drives just to cover what we've already recorded! UA-cam doesn't pay that well 😂 Redundant disk drives are way cheaper, and we've had SSD drives fail too. Consider SSD travel drives. Little bit more expensive than magnetic storage, but much more resilient for salty air. Also, if you have the bandwidth, a Cloud backup service. Livedrive offers unlimited storage for fixed price. Just suggestions.
The amount of data we create makes SSD drives an extremely expensive option. We already have something like 20TB of footage from the last 3 years. And cloud storage isn't really an option while out sailing, even with Starlink (monthly data is limited to 1TB). So for now, multiple copies on external HDD's will have to suffice.
As soon as you make videos, copy the footage to a second hard drive, and put that in a ziploc bag with a desiccant packet. This way, you have two separate drives in separate bags…the one you work on, and the archive.

Good fr I ends had some footage. Nice job. 2010 thru 2014 were my years in Mexico. Got way up in the Sea of Cortez but never Puerto Penesco.

We did a few dives and they were all amazing. Our favorite one was at Sail Rock with the sea lions!

That always sucks a dead hard drive.. I made.myself a small raid mas with 4 2.5 inch SSD. So if one crashes you will still have your video's. Merry Christmas to you both

That sucks ... just a thought ... since the salt in the air is usually the culprit, have you considered using a waterproof container to store each of the external hard drives? If you buy quality cable glands you could leave the external hard drives inside of the container and run the USB plugs into the container without exposing the hard drive to the salt air. Since you are only running the external hard drives for short periods of time for backups there probably won't be any overheating issues with the drives. Just a thought ... you are not the only ones who have lost footage or whole laptops to the harsh salt air --- unfortunately you can't do the same fix for the laptops! We'll all keep watching!!

Backups are essential. Hard drives fail. I guess you've learnt the hard way like so many others.

SSD drives are the only way to go these days. A little more expensive but more durable. And nothing is safe until it's on at least TWO (preferably three) locations, hopefully one in the cloud (which is tough when you're sailing, I realize!). Good luck!
We didn't mention it, but we actually had an internal SSD fail as well a few weeks before the external did. SSD storage and backups for all our footage would be a LOT more expensive. We already have something like 20TB of footage from the last 3 years. So 40TB of storage in external SSDs = around $2500-$3000. Yikes. Duplicate copies on external HDD's will have to do for now.

I can relate to the data loss. I lost three years of raw clips for my bus conversion the same way. I still have the prior crudely edited videos but it's not the same. Bummer.

Fortunately I have my poorly edited videos out there to try and reuse the video later when I do a "completed the bus video" but it won't be easy and probably lower resolution. I'll use multiple drives and backup raw clips to the cloud as well from now on! I'm going to try to get skilled at editing. We're there any materials for learning to do good editing that you found valuable? As I build boats kits for sale, I'll want to have professional looking assembly videos.

Well Thank Goodness for friends & footage you've done a great job reconstructing the missing time! I'm sure someone else will tell you this but video storage for you guys because your office is always moving your best storage is SSD because there are no moving parts I have a nice little 5T that I use strictly for my Drone footage. Anyways it happens to the best of use it wasn't to long ago Bill & Grace crashed a laptop thankfully Kazza had an old one for them buddies are a blessing!
