Gearbox hardly worked on this game at all. *can hold. They're usually loaded to 95. And the Mk2 pulse rifle is ridiculous. Smaller mag no real benefit. And when you upgrade the gun hoping to turn it into the movie the mag sticks out of the gun and now the PR makes a horrid noise. It's shocking how poorly it's executed when some of the other guns have genuinely interesting ideas. Pr fun ideas like turning the SA80s from the movie into the bullpup battle rifles. I even like the attempt to make the WY pulse rifle in alien 3 into the smg... Except the WY pulse rifle has a slower loud sound than the normal PR and the SMG is the exact opposite. :/

@@NebLleb I assume its got to do with leveling up the classes and weapons, and when you're in single player that means replaying the same missions over and over. @@chrisjohnson1146Yea I agree, I love Fireteam and still play it but it has a whole chapter where you just shoot robots and it’s horrifically boring. I would have also wanted a first person mode like World War Z, I wouldn’t even mind paying extra for that feature. Other than that I think it perfectly creates the feeling of a Colonial Marine and I appreciate all the references to the other films besides Aliens.
Oh boy, I remember playing this game and in the mission where you are on the surface and running from building to building fighting both the corporation and the xenos, all of a sudden my character exploded and I instantly respawned at the checkpoint I had just passed and every single alien and human(even my allies) where giving their best mime impression with only their heads able to move, aliens caught in mid jump, soldiers stuck behind cover or mid run and the like. I busted out laughing, I had to reset the mission as I couldn't progress(as the game more then likely thought I was dead) but I got one heck of a good laugh XD
One teeny tiny correction, This game's development in fact took place in 2001, it had been in Development Hell since then, then there was no more talks until 2007 with the Magazine shown here. When PS1 ALIEN RESURRECTION came out in 2000, already there were rendered pictures of the supposed "gameplay" scenes were already circulating, and it was a projected PS2 game. I know this because I'm a hard core ALIEN franchise fan (who eagerly was always looking for ALIEN games in video game magazines) and I was also working at a gone video game store in Reading PA called MICROPLAY before, during and after the release of the SEGA DREAMCAST, PS2 and GAMEBOY ADVANCE game consoles. The Gameboy Color game titled ALIENS: THE THANATOS ENCOUNTER was released, but in the magazine that they announced its release, they mentioned ACMs, so as PS2 surged in sales and games, ACMs supposed pics came out and were many articles referencing the type of game that it would be, either a FPS, Third person perspective, Top Down and others. This was very similar to PS1's ALIEN RESURRECTION's own difficult production issues that caused the game to be released 3yrs after the movie had come out...with unfavorable, yet well deserved reviews.
It’s honestly an okay game, except for how many human enemies there are. It’s a AA game people thought was going to be a AAA. It happens all the time, but it was the best aliens fun we had until a few years later
Thank you for mentioning the Game-informer! I’ve read through that article idk how many times and whatever was being pitched to the public was NOT reflective of the final product! Never heard anyone mention the magazine so it’s good to hear it acknowledged especially concerning the false advertising that this game’s development dealt in. It’s such a shame what happened to this game because I still believe the Alien property is recovering from this failure in terms of the gaming industry. Besides Alien Isolation the property hasn’t received any large budget games since 2014. Nothing that could be considered triple A anyway and I believe it’s due to the reputation that Colonial Marines left the property with. Luckily Isolation has garnered a cult following and the lifetime sales have proven it to be a successful game even if it performed poorly in the beginning due to the stain of Colonial Marines. I truly hope the concept of Colonial Marines gets another shot with a competent developer and a confident publisher. Because concept wise whatever that magazine was reporting on sounded like an Aliens fans dream game!
I remember reading that game informer in the start of highschool. I was so hyped, I read that issue over and over. Then the game finally came out…me and my buddy were BEYOND hyped. I have and will never forgive Randy and Gearbox to this day. Me and my buddy were absolutely CRUSHED.
19:34 What's weird is that Gearbox then went to the opposite extreme with Duke Nukem Forever with only two weapon loadouts, when the whole appeal of the series was being a walking arsenal.
I sad thing is this was Timegate Studios final game before they went bankrupt. And nobody really knows whether Gearbox really made the game or just went with whatever Timegate made in a short timeframe.
From what I've read, Gearbox outsourced the game to Timegate around 2010 to continue work on it. When they got all the files from Gearbox, they realized they hadn't worked on the game much, so Timegate had to figure it all out with other studios involved.
I bought the ps3 collectors edition with the power loader figure on day one. I didn't wait for the reviews as Im a huge SEGA and aliens fan, what could go wrong? I joined a online game and i kid you not, started on the last level. I was the one who pressed the button top shoot the queen out the lock and i have the trophy saying I've completed the game before i even played the first mission.
I think sometime in the not too distant future a game with a similar concept is going to be announced and released and it will perform significantly better. there's clearly a desire for this kind of game but publishers have just seen it as untouchable for the past 10 years, with good reason. We'll see how the franchise fares if Romulus gets a greenlit sequel, I think we'll see more games like this down the line. I suspect Alvarez (or whomever helms a sequel to Romulus) is going to try to up the stakes in a similar way that Cameron's Aliens did and I'm willing to bet they'll put a focus on the Colonial Marines. A game tie-in would be perfect for such a concept
@@himbourbanist every fan of this franchise wants a good colonial marines game. It would be hard to make, but if whoever pulls it off, it'll make loads of money.
A friend of mine recently spoke with various devs who worked on Colonial Marines as part of an article he wrote. It was an uphill battle to put it lightly. Poor communication/mismanagement, an uncooperative game engine, and a studio (Gearbox) who couldn't make up their mind as to what Colonial Marines should be were the big reasons why Colonial Marines turned out the way it did. Hicks wasn't originally going to be the Maguffin. It was supposed to be a Weyland Yutani scientist seeking revenge against the company, but Gearbox changed it because, "Let's retcon Alien 3!" Several ideas and enemies were cut, like healing stations and an albino xenomorph that was essentially a walking tank. Ironically, the teams that worked on multiplayer and DLC didn't face as much interference.
Unironically ? You want an survival horror experience with colonial Marines that is even more faithful to the movies ? Play Aliens Dark Descent Extremely underrated game
I bought the super duper virgin commander edition with all the extras. I was hyped. I'd played AvP 1 & 2 to death. My buddies and I played co-op on release day. We were mortified. But this was actually a fantastic learning experience about pre-orders and not being sucked into the hype. I'll never touch anything with Pitchford/Gearbox's touch again. Somewhere underneath the rushed mess is a good game. Aliens: Fireteam and Dark Descent seem to have clawed some of it back, they're worth a visit. But thank god for Isolation. THAT was a masterpiece.
If Aliens Colonial Marines had been amazing-it would've been one of the best movie based games ever. We do have Alien Isolation, but I would LOVE an FPS inspired by Aliens. Such a different vibe.
I'm honestly surprised Gearbox didn't get into an entirely separate lawsuit from them stealing money meant for Colonial Marines and pumping it into Borderlands 2, that has to be illegal-
I still remember hearing a rumor that Randy is a PDF. But that might be tied with a lawsuit and misinformation. can someone please correct this for me?
The big disappointment i remember with this game. Months before the games release at the video game store there was a poster saying you could play as Sergeant Apone, Drake , Hicks, Vasquez and drive the APC. I thought wow this game is going to be awesome. Oh I was wrong! I remember when I got the game and could not play as those characters and the game did not look the previews I saw. I thought I got the wrong game.
@awesomeopossum4632 it's funny you say that because that is something I had in the video until I re-watched Aliens. It does actually do that. But the sound mixing in the movie was waaayy better.
I’m sure Tyne reason we didn’t really fight the queen alien was because we would just have to dodge and shoot so they wanted to be a bit more creative and just go with shooting the alien outer space
@@Centrifewgi same I just hope they bring it back ;w; also I really hope the screen is blue you know to make it different like the green one is usable for normal people and the blue screen ones are for the USCM (marines) and that they’re trackers are more upgraded to make it easer to tell who’s a allie and what’s hostile or just random movement :3 (I have a lot of ideas for aliens but I’m too lazy to type it all ;w;)
I agree that Colonial Marines could have been MUCH better. It can scratch the itch, but nowhere near as good as AvP2010 or even Fireteam. Its a very MEH game over all. I think the one thing I did like about it is needing to bring up the motion tracker, which pulls your weapon away from a ready position so you have to be a lot more careful about when to pull it up. And honestly the only thing Colonial Marines did right was retcon Hicks' death. The problem though is its not exactly canon BECAUSE of the controversy. I suppose in universe Hicks being so hollow makes sense. He was getting close to Ripley and watched her die before being tortured by Wey-Yu. Yea he's gonna be a bit on autopilot and jaded. But behind the scenes it is pretty damning when the man himself actully says that the dev team was not into it. And honestly the final product shows it hardcore. Its nostalgia bait yea. Its a... serviceable shooter... but its not a good Aliens game.
I enjoyed the multiplayer modes, and Bug Hunt was fun, but even that suffered from lazy programming. I remember that increasing the difficulty level just turned the aliens into bullet sponges, where it would take 3 to 4 magazines of pulse rifle ammo to take down one alien. I'm not sure I'd describe (most of) the fan service as lazy. The impression it gave me when I first played it (with the Goldeneye 64 level of effort that had gone into recreating the maps) was that, at some point (during its long development, and many developers) it was being made by people who had a genuine passion for it, but that this did not follow through into the final product. Such a wasted opportunity. Great video.
I wasn't bothered too much by the story, and somewhat enjoyed the game of leveled up playthroughs. Remember these Marines never encountered the xenomorph so they haven't a clue what is going on, and before this game explaining that the xenomorph's attachment acts like a cancer we had no idea that canonically you couldn't surgically remove it and save the host's life. That in fact happened in a comic or two as well as I think AVP on the PS3/360. The marines probably though that it was like getting a botfly or parasitic wasp where you can dig the parasite out and the host recovers. But with this explanation we know that it can't happen.
You know what, I feel bad for the developers being over worked, just look at the credits thanking their families for the long nights at the office. That error no one found until like 4 years later, so hundreds of thousands of people have missed it. Randy is to blame for all of this, the guy is a crook that sped a wealth of lies to everyone. With a little more effort this game could have been so much more.
This looks great still!!! Its not the first game a re-visit and get the feel "dang this 2013 game looks better than some modern games right now!" Besides all those problems. This deserved a proper remake.
I liked the multiplayer and the wave mode. That's about it lol. Oh yeah that level where you have to sneak in the *sewers*, then run from a giant ram alien and seal doors... I enjoyed that part, it's about the only semblance of creativity in the game.
The one truth Randy Pitchford told about this game was when he said that the Wii U version was the best. It was cancelled, so no one ever had to suffer playing the damn thing.
I remember the part were you're supposed to sneak behind weird ill Xenomorph and somehow even if they didn't see me they were always watching in my direction and, i remember being a bit creeped out as one went right next to my character and glitch in ly camera (i was seing the inside of the model 😂) while moving his head it's so buggy
@Iam-still-noone the power loader statue is pretty sick, I'll give you that. I think it was way too small for how much fans paid for that edition though.
You know, this video was quite useful to me. It made me think. I'm actually writing a novel about a mix universe between Halo and Alien where the USCM/UAAC have to fight the Covenant. But after having seen the points in your video, I have now some new ideas that I want to portray in my novel. Of course I have to rewrite some parts, but I think it will be worthy of the effort. 😤👍 Thanks buddy.
I remember going to pax west when i was stationed in washington. They had this amazing colonial marines booth. People were dressed in armor, they had the power loader in life size with an alien on the front attacking it. Im not sure what i played but it wasnt what i bought later. Im a big fan of aliens and predator. I have to admit im real tired of nostalgia being played on for money and all we get is trash.
Just found ur channel yesterday during some free time at work and i'm genuinely enjoying ur commentary and editing. I'm also very interested to know if you've ever played the "Metro" trilogy and if you have i think it'd be interesting for u to do a video about it if you enjoyed it or hated it 😂
I remember how Randy pitchford did so many interviews where he talked about how big of an Aliens fan he was and how everyone working on the game was a huge Aliens fan. meanwhile we were being fed fake gameplay trailers. The final game had a graphical downgrade so significant it looked like a wii port of a COD game. The level design was onpar to a mediocre PS2 shooter (and so was the gameplay) I was so hyped about the motion sensor mechanic but the actual game is so poorly designed you have no reason to use it. I could rant for hours about this game.
Even though ACM was a failure I still cherish the game. I first played it when I was 7-8 years old and at the time I was exposed to the Alien franchise by my dad at the time. We bonded over the game and I played it for hours. Even as a kid I realized this wasn't the best game ever and it became more apparent now that I'm older. I hope someday a different studio will be given the rights to the IP and be able to make an entire remake.
If there was ever a justification for remak8ng a game, this.... This is it. The idea was good, the story bridging between films worked wonderfully, but the execution was a disaster..... And yes i played it again recently a week ago........
3:01 Because, that game, the game in those screenshots, is not the game that saw release. That is the game that legends like Charlie Wiederhold were working on, where the goal was to make the experience as authentic as possible. Imagine Alien Isolation, but for Aliens. You notice how none of the marines in those pictures are wearing combat gloves or have any Call of Duty kit on their guns? Track the development timeline, and when that stuff starts seeping in, is when the game was doomed. They went from making something that was basically going to be a story-driven Left 4 Dead esque experience with a lot of dynamism, and they replaced it with a low rent "dude bros" Call of Duty experience with Aliens in it. Yeah, the premise may be the same, but just compare Aliens : Colonial Marines as released, to its little brother on the Nintendo DS, Aliens : Infestation. A quality little Metroidvania with atmosphere and authenticity all over the place.
3:44 He wasn't *just* a fan. it wasn't just that interview. Gearbox is the studio that made Half-Life Opposing Force. You know, the one with friendly marines fighting aliens? The one where Jon St John voiced a drill instructor? This is also the same company that gave us the Brothers At Arms games. You know, those squad-tactic FPS games where one of the characters even says "I like to keep this handy, for close encounters." People were thinking, oh, of course. They're going to adapt their Brothers At Arms gameplay mechanics to the Alien franchise. Maybe we'll get Jon St John playing a tough-as-nails marine. Maybe it will be really moody, and atmospheric, and feel authentic (in the same way that Opposing Force felt authentic to Half-Life.)
18:29 Shyeah, no. No. See, we had the AVP games already. I've already walked around with a motion tracker. I've been doing it since Alien Trilogy in the 90s. The only thing that would have made this new and exciting is that it was a direct canonical sequel to Aliens with the highest fidelity and authenticity in the designs, sound, and world building. We didn't get that. Hell, they screw up major details with the layout of the colony complex... on top of the fact that it should be VAPORIZED. GONE. POOF. There should be *nothing* left of that outpost.
10:21 dude must think he's Mrs incredible. Jokes aside, since all the funding went from aliens, the least they could do was deliver a good duke nukem forever.
Okay, here a question How would you guys fix this game, and what would you have done differently? On it What would you added and removed from this game
That was the moment the game lost me. If removing the chestburster makes no difference and you still die, there's no suspense at all when someone has one inside, no hope spot, no "if only there was a medpod" tension. Maybe it doesn't make a difference in the game, but ruins the potential of the entire lore.
Believe it or not, before this all happened Randy had a pretty decent rep in 2010. 😂 Actually quite a few publications, basically had faith in this game purely based on Randys enthusiasm & goodwill for him. Also decent work ❤. If this is produced by you, you did some good work, some deep cuts and hard to find anecdotes about the development.

A pulse rifle holds 99 bullets. They couldn’t even get that right.
@ronmexico6901 yeah, for some reason the legacy weapons you find do, but not the pulse rifle you use. Makes no sense
That's because it's a newer version of pulse rifle, it's quite literally in the name

@@adamloveland3198 if this game was good for anything at launch, it was getting some kind of comedic relief.

Romulus is slaying Borderlands at the box office, and ain't doing half bad with critic and audience reviews either.
Sweet karma.
@@Drewgantka_97 that's exactly it! They pitched and marketed the perfect Aliens game and underdelivered on every front.

Gearbox should have had to reimburse Sega and every pre-order customer that requested it. 😡

The big disappointment i remember with this game. I thought wow this game is going to be awesome. Oh I was wrong! I remember when I got the game and could not play as those characters and the game did not look the previews I saw. I thought I got the wrong game.
For what it ended up as, it wasn’t too terrible, the greatest sin committed was the sound of the pulse rifle cutting out while firing
I liked that you had to pull your motion tracker out to check, it made it cooler and scarier and I liked the raven it was cool >:3
That was one of my fav mechanics. Too bad it was more of a mission marker than anything that built tension.
@chrisjohnson1146 perfectly stated friend!
Really glad you covered the dlc seems they made that story to capitalize on the isolation hype
I remember this game being so poorly made that i could play online with people who bought it on steam... And i had pirated it.

There was also Aliens: Colonial Marines by Check Six which was cancelled in 2002. It was a crapfest from the start.

2:32 It's not that they're lies.
The game completely changed from 2008 to release in 2013. They basically restarted in the middle.
You know, those squad-tactic FPS games where one of the characters even says "I like to keep this handy, for close encounters."
People were thinking, oh, of course.
14:13 She's an officer. A USCMC Pilot, and an officer. So... She does have rank over them.
