  • This Kitchenaid stand mixer was purchased from ebay and sent directly to me for service, so the owner has yet to see it. It does run well, but was desperately in need of some maintenance! Now we can send it on to the buyer, and they can get a lot of future use out of this great machine!

    This was the model i wanted to restore that I asked you about doing the powder coating on. This is a bit newer than the one I have. The blocky kitchenaid logo came into use in 1962 and before 1970 the power cords were grey or black. The k4-B you worked on had the older logo. Thanks for the upload!

      I am wondering what you found out about powder coating yours? I have this model. It was my mother in laws. Been running strong for decades. This video has made me see I should have it serviced. But it looks like heck. I didn’t throw it in a cement mixer, but it kinda looks like I did. So I’m wondering about having it powder coated.

      @@pattimessenger6214 I haven’t done anything yet. It’s still in parts waiting for when I can focus on it. I have a friend who is a professional painter who I’ve discussed it with. There is powder coating done locally, but I don’t want them to just coat it and fire it. One of Ricks videos showed some prepping by pre-hearing the casings to get rid of oil that has soaked into the casting. I’m so fussy about these kinds of things.

      Wow! That sounds like VERY hard use! Do you know of any maintenance or repair that has been done on that, or that's needed? If not, I'd have someone take it apart remove and replace the grease, and regrease the bearing at the end of the motor shaft. Do that and it'll probably work for additional years ----or perhaps decades. But that old grease need to be replaced....

    We have a K5-A purchased in the early 80's. It has gotten difficult to work the lifter arm so I want to lubricate it. I am hoping it's the all metal type. I saw that you sprayed something in there. I have also seen people use a wax. What product in specific do you recommend using? If a wax, do I have to take more parts apart to apply it properly? Thank you very much.

I checked Sierra Eagleson and her brother on you tube and they are terrific. Anyway you had mentioned in the top part of the video that the brushes would have to be replaced. lol yea, degreasing these is a real chore! If I am keeping the original finish, I scrape and wipe out as much as I can, then use dish soap and a toothbrush and rag, and rinse with hot water. If they are getting refinished I use TSP and boiling water. It will take off the finish in many cases so I dont suggest that unless you are refinishing it.

    Great videos, I am inspired, but I have a question! Where do you send off to get your Kitchen Aid parts? Some how I got into a Whirlpool site, yet they claimed to have Kitchen Aid parts and told me that the special grease for Kitchen Aid mixers came in a 1 pound can for just under $50.00! Yet I have seen you hold up a small can of the special Kitchen Aid mixer grease that looks like about 6 to 8 ounces, where did you get that smaller can of grease? The model of my Kitchen Aid mixer has the Logo for Hobart, with a sub title, "Kitchen Aid division", Troy, Ohio, Model # K5-A. I used this mixer for over 20 years. But it has started to have an electric smell or a burning smell, and the speed has slowed down to where I cannot make whipped cream. Am I wasting my time trying to fix/repair/grease this mixer or should I just move on to buying a newer Kitchen Aid mixer? Wild Bill

    The Kitchenaid wires are color coded, with other brands, they are not, so how do you know which one coming off the coil is neutral and which one is hot? I know that in actuality they can be hooked up to the cord either way and the motor will still work. I've always changed the cords on my saws. An electrician once told me that for safety reasons they can only be hooked up one way. How do you distinguish the hot wire from the neutral coming off the field coil?

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  6 років тому

      I don't , it truly doesn't matter since the original plugs were also non polarized, they could be plugged in either way, effectively changing the hot and neutral connection inside the motor.

    Bought one of these used and replaced the power-cord because it was brittle. After I put it back together it started to make some arrhythmic clattering noises on low speeds very similar to the sound it makes at 38:48 just a little louder. Is this normal behavior? I just wanted to make sure since it didn't do that before I had it apart, and I have no idea where the sound could be coming from. I took it apart a second time to check the gears but they are all in mint condition. Should I just go ahead and use it, or is something wrong? And just out of curiosity: What could be causing this clattering, if it's not the gears slipping?

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      Usually strange noises from these seem to be from the rear bearing plate, under the speed control assembly. The nuts tend to back out causing it to become loose. It is definitely something to check. I checked the sound on the video you were referring to, I think that is just resonance, I hear that in a lot of my videos and I think it is due to my camera being mounted to a metal stand that is mounted to the countertop the mixer is on. Check those nuts on the bearing plate, let me know if that helps!

    • @jacobpalecek7439
      @jacobpalecek7439 4 роки тому +1

      Vintage Mixers and More Interestingly it does seem to have something to do with how the motor is held in place. When tightening the the nuts you described strongly the sound gets worse, but when they are adjusted sort of "medium tight" the clacking nouse is gone. It does however still happen when the mixer is under heavy load. What could that be? My best guess would be minute abrupt spikes in torque on the motor as soon as one of the brishes hits the next contact point, but only under high current as is the case under load. Is there a problem typical of this clacking sound under heavy load? Thanks in advance for your answer and for taking the time! I really appreciate it! :D

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      @@jacobpalecek7439 Yea those nuts do not get torqued down, which is probably why the tend to loosen up. The plate just needs to be seated and not pushed any further or it tends to bind up. These motors do have a distinctive noise, particularly on lower speeds, and when the contact points start to wear out. That is the biggest issue with these older kitchenaids is parts for the speed control are no longer available. You could check the brushes to make sure they are not worn down to the point where there is not enough tension against the armature. One other thing I just thought of is the governor sometimes can be heard. Really hard to diagnose with all the moving parts in these machines, but if it sounds like a light metallic rattle it may just be the governor getting loose.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      Yes, you can definitely attach it to one of the threaded rods that go through the motor coil. Remove the nut, attach the wire and use the nut to hold it in place, Unfortunately you will have to disassemble the entire speed control assembly to get to it. You may be able to attach it to the same rod under the nut that holds the rear bearing plate in place, but that may also be tricky to get to and would still have to remove the speed control assembly most likely.

    Rick, I'm restoring my wife's beloved K4C. Changed out the grease, put it back together and noticed the red wire on the speed control plate came off. I tacked it back in place with a little epoxy but now I only have about 2 speeds and it still bogs down with a load. I can almost stop it by hand. Seems like the motor is not powerful enough. We changed the square brushes fairly recently. Could I have them in wrong? Any suggestions?

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      You could check the brushes, if the curved end isnt aligned with the curve of the armature, it could cause rough running and low power until they wear and seat. Could it also be possible the wire that is epoxied on isnt making good enough contact? It should really be resoldered. Another thing to check is the rear bearing plate, make sure it is fully seated, if not it will throw off your speed control.

      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      @@Smroot2000 Thanks! The rear bearing plate is the plate you see at the rear of the mixer, where the armature protrudes from. It covers the rear of the motor and the big resistor attaches to it, as does the speed control plate. If you have a 4C, the smaller model of kitchenaid, then if I recall it is held in with 2 long screws but still needs to be seated all the way. If its the K4 , the larger kitchenaid, then it is held in place with 2 nuts. Just make sure everything is fully seated and snugged up. Aside from that, it could still be a bad connection but really hard to diagnose from a conversation. All I can suggest, which Im sure you have already done, is double check everything. Good luck!

    I used red and tacky as you suggested below and I can smell it offgassing. It's pretty caustic stuff! Is it safe to use a non food grade grease in these things? What do you use to degrease?

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  5 років тому

      I have not had an issue yet, and no one has reported any odor from it so far. The choice is yours what grease to use, you can purchase the kitchenaid food safe grease from amazon and use that. The food safe grease is mineral oil and silica I believe. I prefer not to use it since it will definitely break down and leak where any high quality lithium based grease will not. Most of the kitchenaids I service are usually stained from the original grease leaking out as it breaks down, and there is usually a lot of oil under the band and in the motor compartment. For degreasing I will use purple power for regular old grease (anything other than kitchenaid) if it is going to be rifinished, if the finish is staying original, I use soap and water. For kitchenaids getting refinished I use hot water and TSP to degrease the old kitchenaid grease out, if it is not getting refinished, then soap and water.
      I do not believe it is caustic, I think caustic chemicals are used mainly to degrease, not lubricate.

    I wanted my K5A mixer paddle to be a little lower in the bowl. When the stand was raised, the moceable lifting parts limits out in movement against a lip of the stand, so I couldn't see a way to raise it further,. My solution has been to glue a washer to each knob that the bowl sits on, which raises the bowl enough to have the beater sit at the bottom of the bowl.
    But I hear tell that there is a way to adjust that with the nut and spring inside the stand? Perhaps someone can explain to me how that works....

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  5 років тому

      If you look under the base, you will see a access hole where you can loosen or tighten a nut on the bottom of the shaft to increase or decrease tension. You can try to make your adjustment a little at a time and see if you notice a difference in the raised height. If it is already hitting the stop though, see if you have a stop adjustment first. Some models have a screw on the bottom #12 in this diagram www.ereplacementparts.com/kitchenaid-k5a-mixer-parts-c-114958_114959_290214.html that will adjust the stop.

      @@vintagemixersandmore1666 No screw. What I've done is to glue washers to each of the bowl locating pins, and that seem to give the needed added height, and still lets the bowl click into place. Pretty much looks like it was designed that way!

    Hi, Thanks for your video, I used it to replace the grease on my KSM5. Turns out that was not the source of my problem. What I though was gears grinding, was actually sparking coming from the brushes where it contacts the commutator. It's not continually sparking throughout the rotation, it sounds like motor hesitation. I replaced the brushes and tried to clean the commutator with rubbing alcohol on Qtips but still sparking. I don't know if you are still replying to comments, if so, what do you think the problem is and what can I try next?

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому +1

      Hey, motor hesitation can be caused by several different things. It is possible the brush still needs to be seated if it was removed or replaced, which can take a little time, or it could be the contacts on the speed control plate worn or dirty. Also the capacitor in the rear of the machine could have failed and causing excessive arcing on the speed control plate, which would make rough running like a miss as well on lower speeds. Just a few things off the top of my head, hope this helps!

      I have a K5A and the screw to adjust how high the bowl goes is on the very bottom of the unit. Lay the mixer on its side and you should see an access hole on the bottom with a nut inside the hole. I used a socket (7/16th maybe?) with an extension to turn it.

    I'm having problems with the speed control on my k5-a. It still runs when it's supposed to be off. Any idea what the problem might be? I think it either needs new motor brushes and/or speed control plate.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      At the rear there is a capacitor that is tied into the speed control wiring, check it to see if it is shorted. If it is it will definitely run at full speed all the time. You can check it quick by disconnecting it from the circuit and testing your speeds. If you gain speed control again the capacitor is bad and needs to be replaced.

I have contacted Kitchenaid but could not help. I have changed out the metal bowl and betters that did not help. Hi Martin! Im not sure why that is, are either of the tabs on the bowl, or the tab on the lift arm that secures the bowl bent? Is it hitting on the front , back, or one of the sides? If you know where it is hitting, see if pressure on the bowl on the opposite side will make it stop, then you can figure out where to adjust.
