  • In this video we return to Fort William in the West Highlands of Scotland to do a walk we first did 10 years ago, Corrour Station to Meanach Bothy and then back through Glen Nevis. We got lucky with the weather, had a great night in the bothy and relived some memories from times gone by. Why not watch the original videos from back in 2006 & 2007.

    A wonderful encore for me.
I walked that same trail about 2 months ago, spent the night at the Meanach bothy.
It was very wet and freezing cold.
The hike onto Forth William became a survival march after I fell in the marshes.
My twisted knee is yet to heal.
    Great views all the way.
Your time lapse has ticked the gopro as an essential for my next hikes.
We also carried way too much gear!
I'll probably backtrack from the bothy but....powering through feels like completing the task.
    Thanks for the refresh guys.👍🏿

Thanks for watching. It sounds like your experience was pretty much the same as ours when we first started hiking in our early 20s. We carried way too much and it felt like a proper expedition. Hope your ankle is on the mend soon, next time you do the trek it will be 10 times easier with what you've learned this time.
      All the best. Dean

Hi Dean...great start. A journey into the past and a comparison of today. Excellent editing so far and I can sense how much you love it there. Neat Bothy and river crossing and as you say what a spot for the next Bothy along. Magic! It looked like Dave was a bit of a mud runner. Enjoys the dirt and I saw Ray filming. Perhaps a film from him soon. Good to see you guys in the Scottish mountains having some amazing fun. Inspiring trip Dean. All the best. Mark.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 років тому +1

+Wye Explorer Hi Mark, thank you for watching. I felt like a kid at Christmas as we were driving up to Fort William, I had butterflies in my stomach on the train journey from the excitement and anticipation of being back there :-) The moment we stepped on to the platform at Corrour and the train pulled away was a great feeling, we had talked about doing this trip so many times over the years and it was great to finally be back there again. The Bothy is in such a fantastic location, nothing for miles and not a sound other than the nearby stream... I was in heaven :-) Dave is fearless, he did regret the river running a little as his boots (my spare cheapo Karrimor pair) let water in which made the last few miles a little uncomfortable. All in all it a was a great walk down memory lane and a great collection of new memories was gathered along the way. All the best, Dean

Scotland is definitely on the list for me as is a place like this. I've fancied the Cairngorms. I will have to wait and see. Yep your mate Dave is a real trooper. In fact your all fun to watch. I love watching you guys. I feel like a mate with you all sometimes. Well, been good again Dean...another great share. All the best. Mark.

Thank you for the trip down memory lane..i was a Ghillie on Mamore estate around 75....we kept our horse at Luibelt.and due to time constraints i could never cross the river to see inside Meanach..but i did have a record for fast walking with leading a horse..and that big rock you passed on your way to Fort william about an hour from Meanach..i did it in 45 minutes then crossed over the river to gain high ground waiting for a radio signal from the keeper and where to go next......i got to Stoinage in late 75 walking over from Beauchille Etive More..which nearly ended in disaster due to bad weather ..still i survived and thanks for showing me inside..good luck Dean.

+jamie shuttleworth Hi Jamie, thanks for watching mate. It was a really great little adventure that we managed to fit in nicely on the 4 days off that we get from work so no holidays were used in the making of this video :-) A lot has changed over the last 10 years but much of it is for the better I'm pleased to report. As for the mobile phones, it's a good thing and a bad thing at times. Technology can enable lots of things but it can certainly be a distraction in the outdoors so I was very pleased to be off the network for a few days :-) thanks again mate and all the best, Dean

+GoonieBushcraft it certainly was a trip to remember. It was great to get back there and relive some memories and create so new ones too. Had to use that music for this one, it's my favourite melody of all time so had to include it in this one... Just for the record, I want Mark Knopfler's "Going Home" played at my funeral please, if Mark can't be there to play it in person on a Fender Strat then a full orchestra would suffice :-) haha. A Brilliant return trip Dean and Co and I’m sure you will be back before 2026! I watched the earlier trips and was great to see nothing much changed except for the pack weight and an older but wiser team plus some updated technology! Really enjoyed that and the river crossings look fun. Scotland has to be on list and worth the drive even for short stints. Stephen

+Stephen Turnock hi Stephen, thanks for watching both he vids. Jay, Dave and I all work together so we managed to fit this trip in to our 4 days :-) It is a fair distance to go just for a short trip but 100% worth it seeing as we got amazing weather conditions. All the new technology is great but I must admit I did enjoy the fact that there is zero signal for the vast majority of this walk, it can be a real distraction from the beauty of the landscape and from spending time "in the moment" at times.... for me anyway :-) All the best mate, Dean

It was really great to retrace our steps and I must admit I did reflect on the changes in my life over the last 10 years while I was sat beside the river that evening, the majority of it is for the better so I really can't grumble at all :-) All the best, Dean

      Hey Dean
Ya - the Canadian Rockies are truly an amazing place. The highway between Jasper Alberta and Banff Alberta, called the Icefields Parkway is one of the most beautiful places in Canada. There are so many hikes and sights along that route. This summer my friend and cycled Jasper/Banff/Jasper (return). It has hostels along the way, that might work well for you. Let me know if need any suggestion, etc for your trip. I'd be happy to oblige.
      Cheers,
      jerrold
p.s. my cycling trip in Scotand. I'm planning on buying a bike from Shand - cycle builder in Livingston Scotland. So I"ll fly to Scotland and ride my bike out their door...cool, eh?

+Jo Do hi Jo, thanks for watching. If I'm honest we use the Ray Mears philosophy of if it's "Fast Moving Over Rocks" it's usually OK to drink. I've never had any issues before myself but I know a few who have so its always a tricky subject. I filtered the water further down stream as it was very slow moving and there was more people passing through there so you never know what might be in it at that point. Further up stream though there was no livestock and it was flowing very quickly so I took the risk and it tasted great :-)
