Camping Along The Great Glen Way | Choosing Joy

  • The Great Glen Way travels for 79 miles from Fort William to Inverness along the Great Glen. It passes Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness, as well as the grand Caledonian Canal. It's crammed with historical sites and beautiful forests, and whilst the route may mostly be flat (perfect for anyone new to backpacking), the climbs that do appear offer the most magnificent views as a reward. It is a truly engaging walk, and like always, has a lot to teach the open-hearted walker whether wild camping or staying in other accommodation along the way.

I've come to the conclusion that anyone giving this - or any of Abbie's videos a thumbs down can be summed up in one word... 'envy'. They must yearn to experience her vitality, enthusiasm, magnetism, her determination to overcome mental health issues and, finally, her infectious smile!!

Bringing back lots of memories. My late grandad was from round that area and talked about the railway. We went up the hills just south of Loch Lochy and saw golden eagles. Nice, especially the wild raspberries.

56:05 - You sound like Henry Thoreau musing in Walden "I was suddenly sensible of such sweet and beneficent society in Nature, in. the very pattering of the drops, and in every sound and sight around my house, an infinite and unaccountable friendliness all at once like an atmosphere sustaining me, as made the fancied advantages of human neighborhood insignificant, and I have never thought of them since. Every little pine needle expanded and swelled with sympathy and befriended me. I was so distinctly made aware of the presence of something kindred to me, even in scenes which we are accustomed to call wild and dreary, and also that the nearest of blood to me and humanest was not a person nor a villager, that I thought no place could ever be strange to me again."
    Love it!

You are a pure delight. You inspire me thru and thru. Amazingly enuf you even showed up in an anxiety dream last when I was, yet again, hopelessly lost in a huge city. Your words from other videos came thru to me and I tried to concentrate on them. I’ve suffered from anxiety all my life and often feel lost. Your words about finding joy, about continuing on, about shouting out hello to everything no matter how hopeless it all feels mean the world. You’re a treasure!

Some of the views were spectacular, your enthusiasm as always infectious, but what struck me most about this video Abbie is the quiet wisdom you gave us on this one. The choice in every moment to truly open our eyes and to see. To take joy in the beauty to be found everywhere around us. It is far too easy to get caught up in the destination and to lose sight of the pleasure of the journey itself. Great stuff. Stay safe and stay wild :-)

Abbie. Thank you so much for this and your other videos, I am at an age where backpacking trips like this are probably over but so much of what you say, and introduce us to, resonates with me and also brings back some great memories. One time when I walked the West Highland Way I walked from Bridge of Orchy to FW with another guy, I met on the trail also called Ian, and understand what you say about having some company. Ian lived in Inverness so we went our separate ways and he walked the Great Glen Way to get home so great to see the second part of his journey. I understand what you say about the end of the walk, when I completed the Southern Upland Way, I passed the sign at the end and just walked on for a little while until it dawned on me what I had just achieved, and I should stop, so I turned back to the pub and journey to Edinburgh to get home! You are inspiring us, please keep it up and keep sharing your knowledge, joy and enthusiasm. Ian
