    Our very first long-distance trail in Scotland, and what a beauty she is! Hope you guys enjoy seeing what wild camping the West Highland Way is like, and if you fancy walking the route yourself be sure to check out our detailed guide over on the blog - www.goingthewholehogg.com/west-highland-way-guide/ We also have a specific guide for camping the WHW (www.goingthewholehogg.com/west-highland-way-camping/), plus an accommodation guide if you'd rather sleep indoors every night along the route (www.goingthewholehogg.com/west-highland-way-accommodation/) Cheers for watching! We came from Georgia to hike the West Highland Way. We finished today, it took us eight days. Thank you for the inspiration! We purchased your map, and it helped us a lot with navigation and finding the right places to camp 👍🏼

    This video was perfection! So immersive without the blethering to camera! Then second half bonus of well constructed information! Such a joy! Just done the South Downs Way in prep for the West Highland Way in the spring. Will be watching this over and over as part of my prep.

    Lovely video. Thanks for taking us on your adventure. I'm a wheelchair user, so it's something i could never do. I tried the start of the walk in Milngavie but only managed about half a mile. It was going great, then i hit the first steep hill, there was no chance i was tackling it! 😅

    Outstanding content as per folks, the attention to detail is on another level, love all the low mist footage as for me it just seems to fit Scotland.
    Was over at Ben A' an on Friday 27th for a little climb with my daughter and Kylo ''the coolest dog on the planet lol''
    Was a decent enough day but sadly I'm now having trouble with both my knees, had issues with the left since about 1995 but was manageable but the right has suddenly just started being painful, only 52 but this aging process just creeps up on you, can only stay positive I guess and keep moving, you two will know the score eh.
    Massive Thanks again for all the time passion and dedication you both put in that makes a Channel that is a real credit to both of you.
    Cheers.

      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Gary, thanks very much, appreciate it greatly as always. We feel the same about the mist, it does fit Scotland and it often creates the perfect atmosphere. Glad to hear Kylo is still the coolest dog on the planet, sad to hear about your poor knees. But yeah, you’ve got the right idea, just keep on moving. Thanks once again Gary, really appreciate the support.

    You guys are awesome! Currently in the middle of the WHW myself and had to take a break while sheltering from the rain in our tent in Kingshouse to watch your video. Great video as always and full of admiration for Del’s effort to set up and run back for all those shots! That stretch from Inversnaid to Inveroran was tough - can’t imagine how hard it was basically doing it twice!

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 роки тому +1

      Hi James, thanks a lot! Know what you mean about that stretch, definitely took advantage of just shooting Kim handheld a couple of times rather than setting up absolutely every shot on the tripod 😅. Like the thought of you sheltering in your tent watching the video 👍. Anyway, you’ll be well finished by now… hope you enjoyed the final days to Fort William and had good weather too.

    This was lovely thank you. I loved all the sounds as well it was at a really nice ambient level to make me feel like I was there. Birdsong, crunching footsteps, etc, just really relaxing! And any music was not obtrusive or loud. The scenery was absolutely unreal. I'm from Liverpool so it's only a few hours drive away. Love Scotland, haven't been for years and now I'm itching to go back!!! Really informative debrief too. Cheers 🙂

    Super thanx. I think it’s 33 years since I walked the WHW. Your film reminded me of all the pleasure and much of the pain of walking a long trail. There are many more facilities now which would make for a better experience. I finished the walk covered in midge bites, soaked through most days and nursing a stress fracture in my right foot, collected on the decent from Conic Hill. But I had a great time. I look forward to your next adventure. Best wishes and congrats.

      Thank you Emma, great to hear about your experiences on the trail all those years ago. We can well imagine how different it is now compared to then… definitely good to have all the cafes, etc. for easy feeding and a bit of pleasure along the way. Glad to hear you enjoyed it despite the difficulties. Anyway, thanks again and glad you enjoyed our video.

    Truly excellent, as always, and a very entertaining follow-up briefing that had me chuckling. I'd written off the WHW as being too busy and midgy, but I can see that late April/May is a good time to go. Great combo of wild camping and seizing ALL opportunities to stuff one's face in passing cafes! I'm really inspired to go for it. Thank you, Del and Kim... I really appreciate your talent and the tremendous work that goes in to these videos!

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 роки тому +1

      Great, thanks very much! Appreciate it and happy we provided some entertainment in the follow up… these bits are often a little stressful and have us bickering a fair bit 😅. We know what you mean about the busyness of the WHW - it was definitely busier than most multi-day hikes we’ve done but wild camping certainly helps you keep away from the crowds at times. And yes, definitely no midges at that time, although a week or two later would’ve seen a bit more green in the Highlands. And of course, those cafe/restaurant stops are a must! Really happy we could give a little inspiration and thanks again for watching, leaving a great comment, and for the continued support.

    Great video. Shows the potential contrast in weather across the whole route. I will camped back in the 80's when a map was still needed - too old now for that. 🤪

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks a lot. Yes indeed, the contrast in weather and in landscapes. Luckily we got a decent mix on the weather front. Must’ve been a different experience both camping and walking the trail back in the 80s.

    • @number9loyaltv
      @number9loyaltv 2 роки тому +1

      @@GoingTheWholeHogg it sure was. Equipment was very much different - heavier - and not so advanced. A degree of map reading skills was required, as well as an ability to pick a decent spot to camp. There were next to no places to stay, few restrictions on camping and NO courier services to carry luggage from stop to stop. I did it twice south to north and once north to south - in it's entirety. Still love it - and do single sections regularly. Your video might just inspire me to go again for my 60th Birthday next year. 😉

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 роки тому

      @@number9loyaltv very interesting. Like the idea of few camping restrictions (similiar to our experiences elsewhere in the world) but of course understand the need to manage the environment with things so much busier these days. Would be interested to walk north to south at some point, when time allows. Well, 60 seems like a good age to give the whole thing another go 😃... best of luck to you if you decide to do it.

    Then there was the look on Kim's face when the food dropped on her leg. Made me smile!

      Thanks so much, really happy to hear you enjoyed it so much, and that you like the style - it really is the best way to let the images do the talking if possible. Good luck with your own hike. The baggage transfer option is certainly a great way to do it, particularly if you’ve had pain issues. You’ll probably get a few midges this time of year but fingers crossed it’s not too bad. Thanks again for watching and leaving a great comment.

    This was great! The scenery and the music were both so beautiful. I think the Iliked the Loch Lomond part the best, too. By the way, I loved that expression you used about having a little chat with your fan Martin, "a wee blether" - what a great phrase.

The Loch Lomond sections were really beautiful, but we’ve just driven through some of the Highland areas a couple of days ago and they were looking beautiful also, much more green than just a few weeks before. Haha, yes, a ‘wee blether’ is a pretty great expression. Thanks again!

    I just finished the WHW, first time, my girlfriend and me (we are both in our 70s), and though the visuals were stunning, the matter of fact, underplayed tone of this video, like much of the brochure literature we read, did not accurately portray our experience.
    We loved our whole experience, but these people are clearly very experienced hikers and the personal travails (mostly because of weather, but somewhat the difficulty of walking on the hard packed stony trail)and the long distances) were not part of this video or commentary. Granted, we hiked it during this worst rain and flooding Scotland has experienced in years, but for me hiking over Conic Hill with pelting rain and gale force winds….well, let’s just say I wasn’t glorying in the views of Loch Lomond.
    But those personal challenges were part of the journey, and except for one brief matter of fact comment about physical pain around Loch Lomond I didn’t get much sense of……feelings, especially difficulties.
    I will just say this: (from two Americans who had never done this before)we trained what we thought was well enough for the trip, but really not. Hiking 12-15 miles a day is hard for the last few miles! We saw videos of 30 sonethings who had the same problem. And waterproof gear or not we had two days when everything was soaked at day’s end. REALLY glad we weren’t camping.
    So in closing, if you haven’t really done this kind of hiking (day after day of 12-15 miles) go more for 8 miles a day for at least some of it, ( which gives you a chance to take your time and appreciate)take rest days (we did, so glad)
    But as I said we lived the experience and experiencing Scotland by walking it was wonderful beyond words.

    Hey guys! What about your encounters with ticks?

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 роки тому

      Thankfully we had no encounters with ticks, despite camping in many different landscapes, often with long grass. Perhaps there weren’t enough animals around or maybe it was too early in the year? Had a pretty unpleasant situation with ticks a few years ago on the Ardnish peninsula so always extra wary now.

    • @rayhoodoo847
      @rayhoodoo847 2 роки тому +1

      @@GoingTheWholeHogg Ah nice, thanks for letting me know. In Latvia we have extremely many ticks almost everywhere in nature and greener parts of cities too, 20-40% of them carrying Lyme disease bacteria, that's why I'm asking. But good to know that it wouldn't be a probem in Scotland.

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  2 роки тому +1

      Wow, that sounds extreme, we had no idea that ticks were so bad in Latvia, especially in the cities, and with the danger of Lyme disease. No, they do exist in Scotland and Lyme disease is present in some areas but it is certainly not such a big issue.

    Why no commentary during the walk? It's obviously much better to explain where you are and what you're seeing as you're filming it rather than having to tack it on at the end. You had sound and it might have livened up the shots of making tea over a camping gas stove or eating junk out of a bag, or hamburgers in a caff. Strangely enough, we all know what this is like and it's always the same, wherever you're doing it. As for the negative comments about the old military roads, please remember the old poem about them. 'If you'd seen this road before it was made, you'd get down on your knees and bless General Wade.' Finally, and to be honest, you managed to make the whole wild camping thing look to be about as much fun as having your teeth pulled without anaesthetic.
