To the young man that said he thought he was prepared but when it happened he wasn’t. Don’t be to hard on yourself lad, you stood and delivered! Your shooting was fast and accurate! When your gun jammed you knew how to clear it and get back in the fight. I would be proud to have all three boys with me when the sh*t hits the fan.

Retired professional firefighter here (Canada). Just want to say you boys did a great job with the first aid given the situation and lack of training. I laughed about the comment, "I'm pulling your belt off, don't get any ideas." That's a good friend right there. After all the things I have seen in my career I came to learn the value of humor in the face of chaos. The military does it, first responders do it, and I'm sure a lot of others do it. One light comment in the midst of mayhem can actually really bring things down a notch. It's a sign of confidence and shows an ability to remain calm. Don't discount the value of remaining calm. Truly amazing job dudes, I'm impressed. May God bless you guys in your recovery and processing of this scary encounter.

I had a friend who was training to be an EMT. Part of it involved observing doctors working on trauma patients in an ER. He said an accident victom came in unconscious with an open skull fracture. The doctor snipped off some of the herniated brain and said, "well buddy, I hope those were the bad memories!"

As a person who's been in 2 different bear encounters and had to use lethal on one. I educate people on when to use it, the fur density and effects of bear spray. A hungry sow who has cubs to feed or a male in hyperphagia months, who is in a caloric deficit, will absolutely see you as an easy meal and charge.
2 people died by bear June 4th, 2024 and next to their bodies were 2 empty cans of bear spray. Bear spray works on curious bears at a distance, but not hungry or threatened territorial bears.
Your bear gave me chills, he was a big old Schwarzenegger. So glad you boys kept a level head in the fight of your life! I wish you all a long adventurous life, fun wedding, undying friendship that lasts until you're old men in your rocking chairs, complaining about your caregivers. Good job guys!

The greater Yellowstone area is becoming a serious hot spot for Grizzlies. As much as I love nature and all animals, this is really a dangerous area because of all the bears.
We all have a right to enjoy the outdoors and no one loves it more than I do. I grew up outside and exploring nature.
There's only so many bears an area can support.
Time to let the states manage it and have a limited hunting season to teach the bears to be more wary of humans again.
I think humans and bears have a right to defend themselves but when there's so many and they haven't been hunted for so long, they lose their natural fear of us.
It's not an easy situation but this will keep happening until they find a better balance in TGYNP area.
We have to find ways to coexist with our wild neighbors.
I hope these young men have a great and long life together. I'm glad they had each other and lived to tell the tale.

And you wonder why our ancestors shot the damn things all the time. If the bear would have been lucky enough to have a tree hugger there he would have just had lunch and it would have been over for him. I had a grizzly tracking down my buddy years ago. It's kind of like with the wolves just S.S.S. 👍

Your point about hunting also pertains to the big cat problems in Calif and Oregon. Both states allowed the voters to decide that it's 'cruel' to hunt big cats with dogs. Since it's so inefficient to hunt without them, there's much less actual hunting. Now they are overpopulated and end up in parks, towns, and schoolyards.
I could go on about the number people have killed in/near their yards, or the domestic animals that have been killed (including a horse).

Between this and the bear attack in the Kenai Alaska, a few weeks ago, the lesson learned is: Only bullets will stop a bear attack, not bear spray; gun must be carried at all times in an outside holster with one in the chamber, safety off, while hiking through bear country. Extra magazines a must, Always carry a cat 9 tourniquet. What a good friendship. I'm glad you are all safe.

This story doesn't speak to the efficacy of bear spray, as it was not deployed. It also was a partial failure for firearms, as despite a successful deployment it did not prevent an attack. Imagine if the initial engagement had been with spray instead of a hand gun, you would be justified in pointing out how it failed.
Now, it's likely firearm use decreased the severity of the attack and it possibly saved lives (though most attacks are not fatal), but these are unknowable counterfactuals.
I'm agnostic whether or not people carry spray or firearms for protection (so long as they've trained), and I've carried both; just being honest about what can be deduced from this incident.

Tell that to the canadian government that doesn't allow anyone to carry pistols, period. Only long guns, which are often left behind because they are too cumbersome to travel with while doing other sports in remote areas. The problem is typical for that of firearm issues. Our government misconstrues legal licensed firearms with the street thugs in the inner cities shooting up the neighborhoods. They would also rather prohibit law abiding citizens from firearm ownership than doing the real work of going after illegal guns and criminals.

The young gentlemen in the black and white hat with the Carhartt t-shirt is very well spoken (Riley is his name, I think?). All of these guys are lucky to be alive.
Riley administered the best care considering the situation. Riley is providing everyone who is out in the wilderness some very sound advice:
    1. Stick together; close together
    2. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. That is top tier preparedness; bring more than you need.
    3. Know life-saving techniques such as using clothing/ belts to create a tourniquet to prevent excessive blood loss and other First Aid measures.
    4. This happened fast, Riley said, "You think you're prepared for this and you're not"-(meaning a serious emergency). You must act quickly. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
Thank you for covering this story to help inform others about large wild animal encounters/attacks.

The single only reason that we didn’t have the same degree of oppression during the scamdemic whereas countries like Australia and Austria had there children ripped from their arms so they could forcibly give them the jab is Only because we still have the means to defend ourselves and wouldn’t abide it.

Well said to these young men. I have been hunting in bear country for years, carrying bear spray is a must....BUT.... chances of using it PROPERLY to disorient the enemy (bear) has to be calculated with little time in most cases. Before spraying, you need to know Wind direction. Are you uphill or downhill?...gravity works. If not calculated correctly, you may be out of the fight before the bear has a chance to be out of it. They did everything correct by using lethal force to deal with this situation. Great advice, he said.."CARRY MORE THEN YOU NEED." Tourniquet is a must in every hunting pack...they are cheap & life savers (in case you didn't have a belt). Lastly, chest seals are nice to carry as well for temporary use until medical help is provided.
My hats off to you guys! Thanks for sharing your story to make others aware who do not know the risk of "just a normal day out harvesting dinner".

Up in Alberta a very experienced couple in the mountains lost their lives. They were in a remote part of a National Park and followed all the techniques known to keep bears from being attracted to a camp. They both had proper bear spray. It was an older bear in its 20’s, bad teeth and under weight that found them laying in their tent. They had no chance at all. Both were killed and partially eaten when wardens found them. The Grizzly was close by and attacked the wardens who then killed the bear.
