I had a friend who was training to be an EMT. Part of it involved observing doctors working on trauma patients in an ER. He said an accident victom came in unconscious with an open skull fracture. The doctor snipped off some of the herniated brain and said, "well buddy, I hope those were the bad memories!"
@@jefffitzpatrick5017 That's a question I also have. Personally, I'm a revolver fan from decades back, but I've noticed that a number of bear attack survivors in recent years have reported defending themselves with 10mm autos.

These 2 young hunters saved both their lives by being prepared. True buddies for live, I pray that this horrific incident doesn't discourage these young hunters to keep hunting. Also, the interviewer did an amazing job on letting the hunters tell their stories.
As an Australian, I was horrified he even had to worry about that in such an already horrific situation. I pay somewhere between $50-100 per YEAR for ambulance cover in Australia (including air ambulance), and my hospital stay would have been covered by Medicare. I can't imagine being mauled by a bear and realising you have to pay tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket because you live somewhere where nearly all medical care is privatised and puts profit over people.
In '97 I had the same situation. As we were walking out, back to the truck a sow griz came flying out of the willows from my left 20 yards away headed right for us. There was no time for bear spray, I hit her with three 44mag, 320gr rounds in the chest. Shee fell 10 feet from me.
Between this and the bear attack in the Kenai Alaska, a few weeks ago, the lesson learned is: Only bullets will stop a bear attack, not bear spray; gun must be carried at all times in an outside holster with one in the chamber, safety off, while hiking through bear country. Extra magazines a must, Always carry a cat 9 tourniquet. What a good friendship. I'm glad you are all safe.
This story doesn't speak to the efficacy of bear spray, as it was not deployed. It also was a partial failure for firearms, as despite a successful deployment it did not prevent an attack. Imagine if the initial engagement had been with spray instead of a hand gun, you would be justified in pointing out how it failed. Now, it's likely firearm use decreased the severity of the attack and it possibly saved lives (though most attacks are not fatal), but these are unknowable counterfactuals. I'm agnostic whether or not people carry spray or firearms for protection (so long as they've trained), and I've carried both; just being honest about what can be deduced from this incident.
Tell that to the canadian government that doesn't allow anyone to carry pistols, period. Only long guns, which are often left behind because they are too cumbersome to travel with while doing other sports in remote areas. The problem is typical for that of firearm issues. Our government misconstrues legal licensed firearms with the street thugs in the inner cities shooting up the neighborhoods. They would also rather prohibit law abiding citizens from firearm ownership than doing the real work of going after illegal guns and criminals.
What a story they will tell their children and grandchildren someday. They have a lot to be grateful for and another reason to celebrate at the wedding. God bless them!!!

@@DeagleGamesTV The fact they were mauled proves me right. They were not prepared. They had the wrong defensive tools, started out thinking there was no chance of danger etc. Again,, they did a horrible job, and were very unprepared.

The young gentlemen in the black and white hat with the Carhartt t-shirt is very well spoken (Riley is his name, I think?). All of these guys are lucky to be alive. Riley administered the best care considering the situation. Riley is providing everyone who is out in the wilderness some very sound advice: 1. Stick together; close together 2. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. That is top tier preparedness; bring more than you need. 3. Know life-saving techniques such as using clothing/ belts to create a tourniquet to prevent excessive blood loss and other First Aid measures. 4. This happened fast, Riley said, "You think you're prepared for this and you're not"-(meaning a serious emergency). You must act quickly. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Thank you for covering this story to help inform others about large wild animal encounters/attacks.
These young Men are solid citizens. Worked together and saved each other. Amazing story. Thank God they were packing side arms. I’m an old guy now. Still Hunt. These are the type of young Men I would be proud to have in our Hunting Camp. Grizzlies are expanding territory folks. Thanks for sharing this! Hopefully it will help save other folks that experience a Grizzly Encounter 🇺🇸
It is just amazing that they kept their wits about them from the beginning of the attack until rescued. And so very knowledgeable about their terrain and how to respond to the attack. A great story for generations to come😊
These young men exemplify valor and camaraderie. Friends for life! We see so many stories of friends leaving each other while out partying and I’ve never understood that. God bless them. ❤️🙏🫀
Partying requires no skill sets nor the character to obtain any. Elk hunting in the back country requires many skills & a disciplined mindset to learn them. Absolute opposite ends of the spectrum, plus we are the friends we keep. Risky lifestyle versus hanging with competent people. Imho
yeah... and i live in BC canada where we're not allowed to carry handguns for bear defense... theres no way i'd go into grizzly country alone... you need two guys with bear shotguns or rifles to be safe really
Could you imagine if there were magazine restrictions in Idaho when this happened 😳 this is just another example of why we need the 2nd amendment and should not have restrictions on mag capacities!
Make no mistake, all these school shootings are orchestrated for the express purpose by government to disarm the American people. The single only reason that we didn’t have the same degree of oppression during the scamdemic whereas countries like Australia and Austria had there children ripped from their arms so they could forcibly give them the jab is Only because we still have the means to defend ourselves and wouldn’t abide it. Praise God for our Constitution and the entirety of the whole rests with is Second Amendment.
If any one ever questions your decisions, all you need to say is the grizz is dead and we lived. A very fortunate back country survival story. Glad to hear all is well. Well done young men.
Well said to these young men. I have been hunting in bear country for years, carrying bear spray is a must....BUT.... chances of using it PROPERLY to disorient the enemy (bear) has to be calculated with little time in most cases. Before spraying, you need to know Wind direction. Are you uphill or downhill?...gravity works. If not calculated correctly, you may be out of the fight before the bear has a chance to be out of it. They did everything correct by using lethal force to deal with this situation. Great advice, he said.."CARRY MORE THEN YOU NEED." Tourniquet is a must in every hunting pack...they are cheap & life savers (in case you didn't have a belt). Lastly, chest seals are nice to carry as well for temporary use until medical help is provided. My hats off to you guys! Thanks for sharing your story to make others aware who do not know the risk of "just a normal day out harvesting dinner".
Respect to these guys for having the situational awareness to do the things they did. Running to create spce and time, drawing quick and firing, clearing the jam and reloading, and no friendly fire. All accurate shots under pressure. I dont even know these men and even I am proud of them for the way they handled this. Respect gentlemen.
For guys as young as these are, they had such great heads on their shoulders! What an incredible story and I'm so glad they were able to survive. Yes, they had a lot of luck, but their minds were clear enough to remember training and do what needed to be done. Good job, guys! I hope the healing goes fast and the wedding is wonderful!
Most ppl don’t use it correctly they spray it at the bear but you actually are supposed to spray it at the ground at an angle so it bounces back in the bears face..
Yep! Bear spray would NOT have had any effect, as many attack victims can attest to! If bullets didn’t do the trick, what would make one think that bear spray would? It’s completely absurd!
Glad you guys made it and sharing your story. I’ve been hunting in Montana for 23 years and I’ve seen grizzlies close but I was lucky enough where I seen them first. Hope you recover fast brother
This is a Hunt these young Men will remember, and share around their many future campfires, for the rest of their lives! Well done gentlemen! Well done indeed!
Glad you guys made it through that. That area is notorious for grizzly attacks. There was a fish and wildlife biologist mauled by 2 younger male grizzlies probably 4 years ago. I was fishing the next drainage over that same day.
Sweet very nice young men who learned a great life lesson and lived to tell about it - because they took right actions - sweet energetic young interviewer. Very Nice - the interviewer’s genuinely wholesome energy is refreshing
Same here, what ever they were shooting was under powered for a bear! I have researched numerous bear attack stories . Most never get off more than 2-3 shots. 24 shots is off the charts!
Inspirational young men. This gives me comfort and hope for America's future. Knowing young men like this are still living among us. Long live common sense and freedom!
You young fellas did sooo good . Man . Probably being young having quick reaction time saved both you . Someone taught you guys well . Both had guns and extra bullets and knew how to use it quickly. Great job. Friends for life
You’re still here for a reason and I’m so glad you are!! And I think the reason is is to spread this awareness that bears are dangerous and we should always go in bear territory, armed, and prepared to be attacked at all times because without these things you screwed and probably dead. Every time I enter the woods in Nh even for a little stroll I carry a .44 magnum at all times.
This is why I ALWAYS carry in ANY forest I'm in. Good job to these young men being prepared, executing, and handling the situation better than 90% of people out there. This is why you need to know cpr and basic first aid as well.
I spent a lot of years in nature with my dad, all over the U.S. The bear spray can be good if the bear is getting closer and not really going for it. But when they charge, it's you or them. Good job to these boys on how they handled it. This I hope will be a teaching moment to have more first aid on hand. Tourniquets are a must, even for everyday carry. You never know if or when an animal or human is going to injure you.
At the start of the interview the men were quiet and a bit shy. I’m glad they used each other like the buddies they are and found their voices and shared the humour that got them through this. Up in Alberta a very experienced couple in the mountains lost their lives. They were in a remote part of a National Park and followed all the techniques known to keep bears from being attracted to a camp. They both had proper bear spray. It was an older bear in its 20’s, bad teeth and under weight that found them laying in their tent. They had no chance at all. Both were killed and partially eaten when wardens found them. The Grizzly was close by and attacked the wardens who then killed the bear.
Lovely young men. They could have all been killed 🥺. Their parents must be proud of them. Thanks for telling your story and thanks to this excellent interviewer for giving them the space to talk without interruption 👌🏻. Greetings from Scotland 🏴💜❤

Extra magazines a must, Always carry a cat 9 tourniquet. What a good friendship. I'm glad you are all safe.
Especially that last sentiment- Travel/Hike/Hunt WITH OTHERS, whenever possible! Having back-up is literally a life saving tactic!
Amen
We cant do this in Canada. ☠️💀
What a story they will tell their children and grandchildren someday. They have a lot to be grateful for and another reason to celebrate at the wedding. God bless them!!!
Yes they do
Amazing young man so glad they survived this bear attack
Thank you for sharing your amazing story, guys. Very very glad you all are here to tell it! God bless your healing, quick and thorough!
Amen
100% believe that Scouting has saved me in a few situations in life. It’s too bad that the program has changed into weirdness since I was a kid. Great jobs boys for looking out for each other. Real American’s here showing life lessons 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I’m going to be sharing this story with our Trail Life USA troop.
They did horrible They were completely unprepared.
Here comes the experts, I forgot about UA-cam
@@chrisgullett4332 The fact that theyre still alive disproves your ignorant opinion.
@@DeagleGamesTV The fact they were mauled proves me right. They were not prepared. They had the wrong defensive tools, started out thinking there was no chance of danger etc. Again,, they did a horrible job, and were very unprepared.
God bless your survival and your quick reactions!! You guys did good!
I am so glad you all made it south of this life-changing event. You are forever connected! PLEASE, keep talking about your experience and the fear you felt. These are the events that lead to PTSD. Thank God you are young and smart. Prayers for a quick recovery.
The young gentlemen in the black and white hat with the Carhartt t-shirt is very well spoken (Riley is his name, I think?). All of these guys are lucky to be alive.
Riley administered the best care considering the situation. Riley is providing everyone who is out in the wilderness some very sound advice:
1. Stick together; close together
Riley is in the green shirt. Braxton is in the Black shirt and Boone is in the gray shirt
Well said!!
My friends always ask me why I have seven 18 round mags for my handgun. Here is the reason, or let's say one of them.
Yes you should have a small first aid kit too. With the basics and quick clot. Being prepared makes all the difference.
Wow, they both are hero's. Thank God and Bless you both!
Wow!!! so glad you're there to tell this story!❤️🙏
Brian says, "Riley uses a Springfield 10mm with 180gr FMJ. Braxton used a Taurus 45ACP 230gr FMJ.
I bet they leave the target ammo at home on the next trip.
I wouldn't go out there without a rifle
Just goes to show how fuckin tough a bear is that it matters with a 10mm
Do you remember were you found that information?
Thank you. I was wondering what they used
It is just amazing that they kept their wits about them from the beginning of the attack until rescued. And so very knowledgeable about their terrain and how to respond to the attack. A great story for generations to come😊
These young men were prepared and capable. Country boys. Love em!
Imho
People really think bear spray stops a angry grizzly thats in kill mode , you can't make this up.
both are useful. bear spray shouldn't be a replacement for a gun. once a bear can't see its a game changer.. who knows, carry both.
yeah... and i live in BC canada where we're not allowed to carry handguns for bear defense... theres no way i'd go into grizzly country alone... you need two guys with bear shotguns or rifles to be safe really
@@freebird5215 Me too, I live in BC. I carry spray, and a 12 gauge.
Caint fix da stupid 😮
Bear spray when bear has hold of you hahah some people
Wow guys, what a story. Way to go keeping your heads together. Great interview!
Nice to hear clean cut kids for a change. These all will be successful young men. Go get em!
outdoorsmen rule!
they are a part of the silent majority. comon place in the mtns. everyone focuses on the extremes, lots of grey area
Could you imagine if there were magazine restrictions in Idaho when this happened 😳 this is just another example of why we need the 2nd amendment and should not have restrictions on mag capacities!
Exactly!
Good point!
Amen!
I honestly don't think this will ever happen. How can you control it? I do understand your thoughts though
These young men have a powerful relationship. So proud of them. Kudos to their parents and the young men as well. Glad his injuries were not worse.

💯Mercia 👍😎👌
Thanks for sharing this with everyone. You both handled so well.
Well done, men. You did everything right. You hunted in pairs with the proper equipment, awareness, and mindset.
All these young men, including the interviewer, are exceptional. They have the frontier spirit - something that is all too rare today.
Stay in touch boys. Life gets spread out from here on.
Great interview. Thanks.
Wow!! Sooo glad y’all are alive and able to tell this tale. God bless yall.
Holy cannoli 😳. I am so glad you all lived to tell the tale. Thank you all for sharing your harrowing story.
God is good!! I am so happy for you that you are here to tell the story. I am sure you will have a total recovery.
Amen!! Praise God🙌🙌
Fine young men with all their lives ahead of them, God bless them and their families. Prayers for healing.
Good work, men. Sounds like you all handled the situation as well as anyone could expect. Glad you were blessed with and prepared for defense.
What nice young men. So glad they used their instincts to survive.
Even more than instinct, they used their training! Very smart young men!
What stand up young men. Thank God they all survived.
Well-educated with guns in nature wowzers these are the guys that I would want to be with when s*** hits the fan
They give me hope for their generation.
These fine young men give me hope.
Amazing story! Your bond is rare, stay true you too. Do good by your second chance at life. Great job!
"Well, now there's 999." Best statement ever.
🙌🙌🙌 so glad you both are still alive
Many people don’t live to tell about it.
Proud of you both
True
You thought right, bear spray would not have saved your life
Most ppl don’t use it correctly they spray it at the bear but you actually are supposed to spray it at the ground at an angle so it bounces back in the bears face..
Oh! Please! You don’t know and cannot make that assumption.
@@cachi-7878 do you really want your take that chance? They would be digging you out in pieces in bear scat
Yep! Bear spray would NOT have had any effect, as many attack victims can attest to! If bullets didn’t do the trick, what would make one think that bear spray would? It’s completely absurd!
If you use bear spray, make sure the bear charges down wind from you.
Thank God you weren't killed. Praying for a quick healing.🙏
Do not believe anyone would have addressed the situation better. You kept your cool and did what needed to be done.
Glad you guys made it and sharing your story.
I’ve been hunting in Montana for 23 years and I’ve seen grizzlies close but I was lucky enough where I seen them first.
Hope you recover fast brother
As a mom of young dudes, I am so proud of these guys.
😊 These are three BLESSED men. God has great things planned for your lives. So glad you all are alive.
Wow! Very brave young men. I know older adults who wouldn't be able to keep their composure like that. So glad this had such a good outcome.
Its a good thing these boys are seasoned hunters!
Quick thinking & the knowledge of what to do totally saved their butts!
💪
I would like to know what gun's and calipers they used
Not verified, but I heard one 10mm and one .40 cal.
Same here, what ever they were shooting was under powered for a bear! I have researched numerous bear attack stories . Most never get off more than 2-3 shots. 24 shots is off the charts!
Riley had a 10mm and Braxton had a 45 ACP
@brianmeyers2796 thank you
@@brianmeyers2796what type of ammo? Hard cast?
Inspirational young men. This gives me comfort and hope for America's future. Knowing young men like this are still living among us. Long live common sense and freedom!
Does anyone know what caliber weapons they were carrying and ammo type?
No but I bet 45s or 40s...
I’d guess 10mm
one 45 one 10 mil.

U sure ?😊
@@rickreese5794 talked about in another video and in comments
These young men were certainly watched over by God.
I’m not LDS but these are the type of young people we get in LDS families. I’m glad I live around and with these people.
I’m pretty sure most young Christian men are similar. I know I was.
You young fellas did sooo good . Man . Probably being young having quick reaction time saved both you . Someone taught you guys well . Both had guns and extra bullets and knew how to use it quickly. Great job. Friends for life
The people asking why they didn't use bear spray are the same ones who wouldn't step back from their computer and take a walk to the store.
So what was the medical bill? Might want to set up a GoFundMe, or your dad might want to. lol Good job fellas. So glad you were prepared.
I was wondering the same on the cost. Hopefully, people rally in taking care of it
Likely in the tens of thousands no doubt. Even with insurance they still have the deductible (extortion fee) which is prob 4-6k
@@UnknownUser-fe5zu Wow. I'm Canadian and never knew such a thing.
Way too early to know that. Poor guy will be getting massive medical bills for the next 6 months. Hope he has good insurance.
Thank o blo zo, American
Medical services are a
Financial abomination 😢
A man can only hope to have friends like this in a situation like this! Good job guys!🙏🙏🙏
These kids are Badasses. Their parents should be Soo Proud of them. Not enough kids left in the world like this today. God Bless y’all
We are! Thank you for the kind words.
😮He’s fortunate. It’s great to have good friends. Sounds like they kept their heads on straight and saved their lives.
Thank you for your story, my grandsons are all over Idaho mountains. I shared for just need to know, that makes an old grandma feel better.
These young men are awesome!
I was boogying, I wanted out of there”, Bless his heart, I am so happy for these boys. They are the heart of what seems to be a fading American idea.
I’m glad it was me and not my friend! Simply incredible guys and friendship.
These three were very fortunate. God has His plan.
Thus ends the argument "Who Needs a rifle with more than a 5 shots"
I'm so glad you are all okay . What a story.
Lovely young men. They could have all been killed 🥺. Their parents must be proud of them. Thanks for telling your story and thanks to this excellent interviewer for giving them the space to talk without interruption 👌🏻. Greetings from Scotland 🏴💜❤
