"I've been drivin' this truck for a year now and I still mess up sometimes". I love that, that inspires confidence for anyone thinking of going for their CDL, you could be a driver of 25 years and still miss gears, it'll happen. Thanks for doing this video man it was really informative, keep it up.
took my cdl driver's test on a 9spd. instructor said" put me to sleep on this drivers test you pass". after 4 hours of driving I looked over in the jump seat, he was out. that was in 1976.
@@JohnZ0805 Then he unzipped his pants and blew him while he was driving. Back then you could get away with things like that to cheat the test. Not anymore.
That's same year I got my Class 8 license using my Dad's 74' 359 Pete, it was a 13 speed but the instructor had me shift it as a 10 speed! CDL showed up in the late 1980's I do believe.
When you're double clutching and getting the hang of it every time you shift say this in your head; Clutch to neutral, clutch to gear. This is the exact speed you want to shift at. When you're done saying "Clutch to neutral" you should be in neutral. When you're done saying clutch to gear - it should be in gear.
Why TF is everything cooool? Your like a mob of parrots! Oh my god! That's what I'm talking about! Man! And all the rest, it's ancient history get into the 22st century.
🤣 it just takes getting behind the wheel and getting use to. I know a lot of place thinks they could never do it but once u get the hang of it , it's no problem
I somewhat understand what he’s saying I drive a 10 speed transmission and it doesn’t have that grey splitter to split each gear. It’s not that hard to understand if u drive but I can see why some people would think it’s complicated but it’s really not
@Steve Robertson he explains in another video that the owner of the truck did that to keep drivers from resting their hand on the stick and putting pressure on the shift forks. Also, you're not driving it, so why do you care?
Man to this day I look back and watch your videos over and over again. You inspired me to get my CDL and for the last 8 months I worked as a company driver in an automatic. An opportunity came up to work for a small local company hauling steel in and out of the steel mills in the midwest. I took it and said yes right away. Slight problem though...I havent driven a manual truck since trucking school. I was super nervous and did not want to make a fool out of myself. So I came back and watched your videos. Even the ones that were not about shifting because I just paid attention to how you were shifting and floating through the gears. I have been out training with the owner for a month now and he has been very patient with me. I can now say I feel very comfortable going out on my own. Thanks for the great content and honestly cant wait until you can get everything sorted out and get back on the road.
Great video, I especially like the part where you admit to making mistakes. I am tired of all these supertruckers that have never made a mistake and laugh at you instead of trying to help you at a truck stop.
When I got my cdl, my dad taught me the technique of "ghost double-clutching." All that's involved is that you move your leg, but only move the clutch pedal maybe half an inch. Then, just to make instructors, and the tester happy, I'd double-clutch on a downshift. Trust me, the ghost double-clutching trick saved my left leg, knee, and hip much trouble. Afterwards, I taught myself floating and had so much more fun shifting.
Well because of this video and because of watching Smokey and the Bandit on repeat 10 million times, I found the inspiration I needed to get into Trucking. We're going to do what they say can't be done!
I drive an 8 speed dump truck and I know how to float gears up and down and skip gears. I drove a 10 speed in class A cdl school. I’m going to go OTR for experience then after a year buy my own Peterbilt. I want an 18 speed. This was easy to learn and watch cause I know the concept of shifting and floating gears. Thanks a lot for this video bro keep em wheel rolling 🙏 drive safe!
I usually double clutch the lower gears up to 5th and float the rest. You've gotta try left foot braking while float downshifting with the engine brake on, you can blip the throttle with your right foot while still slowing down, letting the engine brake do most the work.
My big challenge back in school was pressing the clutch deep enough to where the gear engaged smoothly. Instructor wondered why I had trouble with that and figured it might be because of my long legs - i.e. less leverage on the pedal, and I believe that’s true. It seemed like I had to put a hell of a lot more effort into the clutching than others to achieve the same result.
Double clutch I-Shift(probably hasn't hit the USA yet?) the way to go...it's already in the next gear before you've left the current one,no gap in the revs, saves fuel!(Volvo).
with 35 years experience of driving Scania and Volvo trucks, I appreciate the ergonomics and utilization of technology for a reason. Better visibilty from the cockpit, better mirrors, bigger steering wheel, modern gearbox and no 2 meter long gear shifter.
Great video, I have been in trucking for over 40 years and you did it prefect. The only thing I do different is only use the clutch to start and stop. The other thing is a lot of new drivers will sit at a light with the clutch pushed right to the floor and that raises hell with the clutch brake. Unless you are changing gears you don't need to push the clutch right to the floor. Great job, nice dash to 389 right.
Victor Hardin I taught myself how to float gears back when I was driving local around Florida and my damn leg started hurting from all of the double clutching and I said fuck this and never looked back 😂 just get the hang of the truck you driving and watch videos like this one and you will be floating in no time honestly
@Victor Hardin man its alot easier than double clutching to me. its just a, do it enough and you get used to it thing i guess lol.. but seriously, floating gears in a truck is alot more enjoyable to drive than using the clutch..
Victor Hardin I also went to trucking school and learned to double clutch, It was only after I graduated and was training on my first job I accidentally figured out how to float gears while I was driving an L9000 dump truck lol
Great video man! Nice to see other Truckers out there that isn’t afraid to admit they screw up, or miss a gear. I been driving on and off almost 11 years and still screw up too!
Thanks for the video man. I’ve been in an automatic for my first year and I hated it. I start with a new company next week running paper logs. Their fleet is mostly W9, 389, and Coronado. I’m so excited to start grinding some gears and no longer be restricted on my speed.
Being a truck driver has been my dream since I was a child, I hope to can do it by the end of this year. Thanks alot for this video, good luck and drive safe bro!
Good job shifting man! That was my problem because I was taught and always just floated the gears but then they said I had to double clutch for the test and it took me a minute to get use to hitting that clutch! Thanks for sharing
I just recently started watching your videos. Very informative and I absolutely love your truck. I just got my beginners license yesterday to drive tractor trailers and my first time driving on the road will be this weekend and I was looking for tips on shifting and was glad when I seen you post this video. Thank you very much
Thanks for this video!!! I've watched many others on how to shift 10, 13 and 18 speed transmissions and nobody explains them so simple. I grew up on a farm driving tractors with semi transmissions in them and a twin stick 10 speed john deere backhoe but still always had trouble with the semi's. Never understood what splitting gears meant but nobody ever told me. So thanks again and I love the videos bada$$ Beterbilt.
Whole reason I went to truck driving school was to learn how to drive a semi( manual not an automatic). I get there and they don’t have one single manual transmission I was pissed because they told us that’s what they train in. Well apparently manual transmissions are being phased out which I think is stupid as did the instructors. They got me bro lol great video and earned a subscriber! Keep the vids coming driver!
I was looking forward to that top. But my driving school had a brand new Volvo and you could drive it as an automatic or a manual. But you just shift by pressing the up or down button. How dissapointing...
Aaron Sanborn Yeah I know that’s what I was I saying. I wanted to learn in a manual they didn’t have any manuals at the truck driving school I went to and yep I know the restriction thing isn’t that big of a deal you could learn in a manual and just go back and test out but times are changing and the way they are training isn’t what it used to be so you’re lucky if you can get in a manual unless you use someone’s truck and learn like that but if you go to a truck driving school like I did which honestly had it’s pros and cons you’re going to be in an automatic. Not my choice I was told before I started school they train in manuals when I got there they had stopped and said they are phasing out I couldn’t control that if I wanted to.
I went to a school...automatics are junk. I don't do OTR, I work construction and in the woods. Automatics are fuel inefficient and the loss of power is crazy. They also don't shift correctly, any time they sniff a hill they down shift.
Hey bro, I never grind it slowly in to the hole at a slow speed when downshifting to a full stop or close to a stop. it only takes a little tap to rev it in so you never hear but one click. But great vid brother 😎 I haven’t double clutched since I left driving school almost 10 years ago. I don’t even remember how that shit works anymore. 😂😂😂
Great video, excellent explanation and demonstration as well. I just don't get having the shifter so tall, it's the same about "Ape Hangers" on motorcycles. Regardless of what anyone says you do not have as much control especially in an emergency situation! To each their own! Keep up the great work!!!!!
Years ago worked for septic company and we had a volvo 13 speed, I didnt have a cdl but rode shotgun a ton, one day on a haul to the middle of nowhere my buddy let me drive it MAN it was cool. After hours and hours of watching guys float the gears I sort of had an idea, first run through other than first high gear I nailed em.

Learned How To Back Trailers Quickly Running Underground Phone Lines In Rural Areas. Unloaded The Machine Off Trailer A Few Times To Get Me Out Of Ditches When I Had To Turn Around After Going Down Single Lane Back Roads. With Dead End. This Was In The Mid 90s. I Got Scared A few Times I Will Admit. After Dark In Middle Of Nowhere Using Flashlight And Headlights Getting Out Of Ditches. Wouldn't Trade That Experience For Anything. Thanks For Sharing Your Video. 😎.
I was able to float gears in my test in Minnesota. Double clutching perfectly every time is difficult, especially with a lighter load or empty. Maybe that's just me.
I find, personally, that unless you are completely empty and the truck is brand new, split shifting allows you to get into gear much more smoothly, both up and down. Once you have gained decent ability to use the "regular gears" , i would encourage you to practice splitting gears as often as you can. You never know when the company needs a heavy load hauled and you are the only one available at the time...quick way to earn a raise! Or a quick way to die or kill someone if you didn't practice. Concurrent with this instructors information... it also opens up a lot more speed variables so any speed sign can be followed without over revving or lugging the engine! Edit* Not for the right video but still applies f*** it (spit to the ground)
Drove a Dodge CNT in American truck simulator, had to rev match and that's definitely something I wasn't used to as European where we use cabovers. Those are really car alike. Thank youuuu for this video, you're skilled as man! Explained very well.
I drove my first 18 speed and first load I learned exactly what u said in this video. With a little messing around and my own common sense. It was great. .I didn't tell my boss I didn't ever drive a 13 or 18 . I got lucky with this job. Somewhat lied and had a good person refer me. So he thought I knew it all. Worked out just fine. I know for someone else this would be a good video. If very very new a slower video would be better.
Awesome dude “clutch neutral clutch gear” ive been looking for videos that explain what double clutching is and this one is the most helpful one this will help me get my cdl

We had an old international loadstar with a V-92 silver Detroit & a 5×4 transmission that's what I learned on when I was just starting out at 14 on our farm. Its pretty simple once ya get the hang of it but... I sure did half come to a complete stop & start all over again cuzz i would get lost like several times there at first lol. That ol truck would only do 60 top speed but boy that ol V8 Detroit sure made it sound like you was really rollin out lol.
Great job man! I'm very comfy with 10 speed. In Europe we don't have automatics, we all learn 5 or 6 gear car driving, so 10 is a split away only! But 13 or 18... that's not for me!
Currently learning to drive these in multiple trucks. Its tricky sometimes on some trucks and simple with some others. But its fun. Still havent mastered downshifting yet
I haven't double clutched since my class a test years ago. Tried it again last week just for shits and giggles, man it was Horrible. Clutch is onlg used for 1st and reverse. And the occasional time it sticks in gear when she rolls a little to quick for grabbin the next one. Dam drivin in the mountains
Nick D you dont have to use the clutch on the other gears? You just move the clutch or have to let off the gas then clutch? Just interested and was wondering👍
@@nickd.4512 cool. Thanks for info. I want my CDL but dont think I could learn looks confusing. I have a 5 speed manual car but big rig looks intimidating to me
@@paschallhouston its not adter youbget it down. Its just a 5 speed that you row through twice. Not bad at all if its an 8, 9 or a ten speed. 13, 15 and even 18s aren't that bad once you get used to it. I will warn you though. When you take the test, you have to double clutch, if not, they'll fail you. Best to learn to double clutch until you pass your test, then learn how to float gears.
i went to school to get my truck license . that way it's possible to get on the road at 18years of age with a 44ton truck. fuller gearbox was getting very rare in europe but we still had to learn . i loved it.
I remember in truck school I was driving my S-10 with a 5 speed. Most awkward thing in the world was going from that to a rig then back to that every day lol slamming that clutch and double shifting a synchro 5 speed like a mofo lol
When I got my CDL I asked the Instructor did I have to double clutch and she said as long as you get it in a gear I don't care how you shift it. I said good enough for me. I'm not to good at the double clutching LOL
Don't forget, you not only have to shift up through those gears, you have to shift back down too ! All while watching traffic cutting you off and looking for road signs, etc etc etc. It gets pretty busy in that cab !
I was in Nyc traffic the other day and was on the phone in a intense conversation. We started moving. Thought I was in fifth, I was in third. Flipped up the splitter and went to sixth. Holy hell did that trans bang and clunk and the truck jumped and lurched. Almost stalled it. Thought I broke something for sure. Been driving almost 15 years in heavy Boston and NYC traffic daily and it still happens once in a while. You fuck up and embarrass the hell out of yourself then you don't do it again for a while. Nobodys perfect.

This is the reason why i subscribe to his channel😃 i love huge trucks💪🏽 but the only thing i can get in singapore legally is a pickup truck with no fat wheels coz its illegal😭
Very informative.... could you do a foot cam of the floating gears?... I only drive in ATS, but I love trucks and wanna know everything.... love ya channel... dont stop
I was told that the 15 speed is one of the few that requires a low low selector, however working in aftermarket I’ve came across quite a few mechanics saying that they’re 9 and 10 speeds have a low low splitter. Explanations??
Good information here. However I'd swap the shifter to a shorter one. Easier & less tiring. Have 40 years trucking experience in Australia on Eaton & Spicer transmissions. I prefer Spicer.
Great video. What I don't get is in a semi, the drivers extend the shifter up for other people to see it has a manual transmission , but if you have a Chevy diesel pickup truck they advertise on the hood that it has an automatic transmission, you can't even get a stick shift anymore. You wouldn't think the two would be so different
I dont know if you will get this since the video is 7 months old, but super 10 transmissions have the high low range for all 5 gear wells. Also I have heard a lot of people say that double clutching is a must but I was told by my DOT examiner in North Dakota that he wanted me to shift in the safest and smoothest way I knew how. No grinding gears and no lugging the engine. And rev matching is by far the easiest for semi trucks.
now i don't have cdls but when i drove a mack concrete truck 5 speed with high/low that's where i learned the double clutch and float gears this was 12 years ago
Hope u start driving again soon, I’m in school rn and I’ve tried shifting to second in the yard but kept grinding I’m gonna try double clutch and not pressing clutch in too much

Was Trained On A 4 Speed Truck Towing Trailers A GMC Dually Work Truck. 1st Was Granny. Basically Get Out Of Mud Gear. Lol. Then Had A 10 Speed. Driving And Learning Was Actually Fun. 😎.
Nice video bro. They didn’t make me double clutch when I did my test. I just floated it all 🤷🏼♂️
You can do whatever you want on the test, but if you fack up it's overr
Great video, I drive a cab over with a 450hp and 18 speed( 4 axle truck), and even after 10 yrs, i still miss and grind gears
I was able to float gears in my test in Minnesota.
Double clutching perfectly every time is difficult, especially with a lighter load or empty.
Maybe that's just me.
I am a manual car driver and double clutching is so hard to do perfectly.
Good tips man, I miss driving 13 speeds. My company right now only has 10 speeds and its just not the same feel.
WOW That Truck Sounds Soo GOOD!!!!
That extended shifter just puts wear and tear on your detent pin
"don't hesitate and know where your gears are" amen brother!
You were in Osseo Wisconsin. You probably go through Eau Claire then. Cool!
I f'in miss driving an 18 Speed Peterbilt with a Fuller. Great memories. I hope I get to buy one, one day.
I had an instructor, 9 years ago, that was known as “Tap-Tap”.
Drove a Dodge CNT in American truck simulator, had to rev match and that's definitely something I wasn't used to as European where we use cabovers. Those are really car alike. Thank youuuu for this video, you're skilled as man! Explained very well.
Bro if I’m in an accident in that truck, the crash doesn’t kill me but the Shifter will...
Clutch is only for starting and stopping...you'll figure out how to float gears
@@aaronsanborn4291 1650prm i learned...blip it
@@williamrae9954 I don't even bother to look at the tac...I listen to my truck...
@@aaronsanborn4291 Aye,that comes with time...a may drive up to 20 different trucks a year,American,Euro and Japanese...all sounds are different,as are g/boxes
@@williamrae9954 all three of my trucks are Caterpillar powered two by 3406s and one by a C15...they have two different transmissions as well. But if you listen the Cat motors will tell you when to shift no matter what the gear ratios are.
Right RPM she'll slide right in every time. Great job teach!
Best explanation on shifting I have seen yet!! Thanks
I plan on making a better one with feet view!
I have to say this truck sounds amazingly nice
And I’m over here struggling to
Drive a manual Honda Civic. Great video
ouch...
I'm floating gears even in my Golf MK3 - manual tranny ftw :D
Currently learning to drive these in multiple trucks. Its tricky sometimes on some trucks and simple with some others. But its fun. Still havent mastered downshifting yet
I haven't double clutched since my class a test years ago. Tried it again last week just for shits and giggles, man it was Horrible.
Clutch is onlg used for 1st and reverse. And the occasional time it sticks in gear when she rolls a little to quick for grabbin the next one. Dam drivin in the mountains
Same here. Lol
Nick D you dont have to use the clutch on the other gears? You just move the clutch or have to let off the gas then clutch? Just interested and was wondering👍
@@paschallhouston nope, just lift off the throttle
Didn't hear a word you said. Lol was lost in the sound of the pipes. Lol love that deep sound.
5:04 giggity!
I thought my damn phone was messing up 😂
2:30 too
I love all your videos you should do a trip up to Northern California. Lotta truckers up here would be really jealous of high strung. 💪🤙👍
I've always wanted to learn how to drive an 18 speed. Seems simple enough since I only ever drive manual vehicles.
And manuals are starting to get fewer and farther between.
i went to school to get my truck license . that way it's possible to get on the road at 18years of age with a 44ton truck. fuller gearbox was getting very rare in europe but we still had to learn . i loved it.
indeed for the test they don't like not using the clutch lol . same here
Im just here for the noise buddy 😀🙌👂 #awesome
Hey simplest way to shift an 18 speed is 1, 2,3,4 split 5,6,7,8 split again 18 just use the overdrive gears
Salesman: welcome to Volvo, what kind of semis your looking for?
Me: AUTOMATIC PLEASE! 😂
🤢🤢
Duckdude001 my dad got a 2019 379 13 speed early last year. Looks awesome with 8 in pipes and the jake break sounds amazing
One bad choice of semi, another bad choice of transmission
Volvos are just junks in America because everything has to be shipped off to be repaired and almost everything is metric
Duckdude001 your right on that it is a 389 and it’s a Cat 550 engine. As I’m writing this I’m with my dad right now on the truck
Don't forget, you not only have to shift up through those gears, you have to shift back down too !
All while watching traffic cutting you off and looking for road signs, etc etc etc.
It gets pretty busy in that cab !
The best of us miss gears I’ve miss gears all the time.
Doug Stimpson hell I forget what gear I'm in sometimes lol
I was in Nyc traffic the other day and was on the phone in a intense conversation. We started moving. Thought I was in fifth, I was in third. Flipped up the splitter and went to sixth. Holy hell did that trans bang and clunk and the truck jumped and lurched. Almost stalled it. Thought I broke something for sure.
Been driving almost 15 years in heavy Boston and NYC traffic daily and it still happens once in a while. You fuck up and embarrass the hell out of yourself then you don't do it again for a while. Nobodys perfect.
I’m in my second week of cdl school, can’t wait to finish pass the skill test and get going, probably will get me an old Peterbuilt like that one u have, pre emissions love that sound
This is the reason why i subscribe to his channel😃 i love huge trucks💪🏽 but the only thing i can get in singapore legally is a pickup truck with no fat wheels coz its illegal😭
Very informative.... could you do a foot cam of the floating gears?... I only drive in ATS, but I love trucks and wanna know everything.... love ya channel... dont stop
I learned to float gears just after I passed my car test and my clutch died.
Hehe that's exactly how I had to limp home too, except it was in a car so I figure I had it a lot easier ;)
i'm 16 and i have my mind set on trucking so these types of videos really teach me a lot thank you so much!!
What about the legendary 15 speed?? J/k but great video brother, you almost made me go from 5th to 7th in my 10 speed🤣
easy there guy lol
I was told that the 15 speed is one of the few that requires a low low selector, however working in aftermarket I’ve came across quite a few mechanics saying that they’re 9 and 10 speeds have a low low splitter. Explanations??
@@mcrosten829 well i think they said that because a 10 speed with a auxiliary lowlow is a 15 speed !
Good information here. However I'd swap the shifter to a shorter one. Easier & less tiring. Have 40 years trucking experience in Australia on Eaton & Spicer transmissions. I prefer Spicer.
Hey that looks like Osseo! Love the truck!
Osseo Wisconsin, yes it is!
20 mins away i was like that looked like ive been there b4
Great video. What I don't get is in a semi, the drivers extend the shifter up for other people to see it has a manual transmission , but if you have a Chevy diesel pickup truck they advertise on the hood that it has an automatic transmission, you can't even get a stick shift anymore. You wouldn't think the two would be so different
You had me and my wife at, “Fifth hold.”
Got my cdl a year ago I’m in the learning process thanks for the tips👍
You look like the kind of guy to have their shifter higher than their wheel.
Oh wait..
5:03 giggety giggety giggety goo?
Lmao
Slipped in
Great video, I’m in a 10 speed. So the big difference is the splitter low and high
If you can float gears, why would you need to double clutch?
You need to double clutch on your cdl class A road test when you take to get your license.
@@blakejustice8212 oh, makes sense. I got grandfathed in with manuel when I got my CDL. It wasn't an endorsement.
now i don't have cdls but when i drove a mack concrete truck 5 speed with high/low that's where i learned the double clutch and float gears this was 12 years ago
Jedi teaching the little poeple :) Love ya engine brake noise
Nice...an good advice cause they do want you using the cluth but floating is the way clutch when you stuck..
Love your videos man, I definitely subscribed and hit the bell. Do you have a instagram?
Tacosupreme313
Hope u start driving again soon, I’m in school rn and I’ve tried shifting to second in the yard but kept grinding I’m gonna try double clutch and not pressing clutch in too much
Giggity!!🤣🤣
I’ve been waiting so long for this comment Lmao
Doing my skills driving at the moment....this helps. I'm working on how DMV will test me...its new to me and I'm making mistakes, but I'll get it down. Thanks this vid helps.👍🚚🚛
