HOW TO Shift 18 Speed Manual Eaton Transmission
These Eaton 18 speeds can be found in Peterbilt, Volvo, Freightliner, Kenworth, Mack, International, Western Star, and many other commercial semi trucks
    NOTE...
I accidently counted the (reverse) gears as one of the speeds
I was nervous when filming this and can't believe I said this after watching video...Lol
Reverse is NEVER considered a gear when calling a manual transmission an 8, 9, 10, 13, or 18 speed
Only forward gears are (the number) of speeds
I apologize for this mess up on the video!

A simple thing to remember with an 18 speed is you have 9 forward gears if you split each gear it's like 9×2 which gives you your 18 gears

Best explanation i've seen on UA-cam. Also for splitting. You can "pre select" the split. If you're in 6 gear and you wanna split soon. You can split while on throttle. It's not gonna do anything while you're on throttle. You let off and get back on it. and it's gonna split.

The grey splitter button denotes the transmission as an 18-speed. Red is 13-speed, and blue is 15-speed. Blue can also be a Super-10, but those aren't common at all. There are 18 forward gears. With the range selector down, there are 10 gears on the bottom - it's a 5-speed transmission and you can split each gear. And with the range selector up, there are 8 more gears on the top. In the top range, you don't get low gear. Unless you're running heavy (+100K lbs), in a gravel pit, or on ice roads, most of the time you're just going to drive it like a 12-speed - 4 in the bottom, and 8 in the top. Splitting gears in the bottom...really, I don't know any driver that really wants to work that hard. Finally, for those of you downshifting - downshift whole gears. Once you're experienced, you can split down 1/2 a gear, but again, who wants to work that hard. If ole' timers are explaining it to you, they may say direct (splitter back) and overdrive (splitter forward). Those same ole' timers will tell you that they drove a 5 & 4 uphill to school both ways when they started out! ;0) Safe trucking everyone. All the best, Cheers Rick

It's unlikely that I'll ever drive a semi and even more unlikely I'll ever have to drive an 18 speed but I sat through every second of your video. I'm a teacher by profession and you probably explained a concept better than most teachers today can actually explain something. Perfect mix of simple vocabulary, visual aid, and repeated demonstration. That's how you know someone is knowledgeable or a specialist in a specific subject or skill, when they're able to explain something to almost anyone. Every vehicle I've ever owned has been standard and even I was confused how they got 18 gears out of that shifter. That splitter feature is amazing I never knew that even existed.
Whoever you work for is lucky to have you working for them and if you are self employed you should look into offering training sessions for large trucking companies.
If you offered an educational course that incorporated a review of basic truck safety training, roadside safety, driving safely in congestion, and whatever else you see fit I could see some companies hiring you as a presenter or even trainer. Now a days safety is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. It would save the company time and money. I'm not too sure because I'm not in that industry but I would assume that trucking companies would have to do some sort of yearly refresher or training videos for their drivers as part as health & safety laws. I could be wrong but either way, you really know your stuff about this Trans and you can tell you have been driving for a long time by the way you speak. You really can tell he is passionate about his profession and is trying to encourage others not.to be afraid or get turned away because it's intimidating. I commend you sir and thank you for all you do!

He actually over complicated it. If you can drive a 13 speed then it's identical except for the fact you can now split the gears in lower range as we as the high range.
Easiest way to think is the gear box shifts just like a 9 speed. But you have added option using the Grey button to split every gear into a high and low as well
Think of it as shifting 3, 3 and half , 4, 4 and a half ,5 ect. With the half gears being optional . But available if needed.

This was a great explanation! I'm going through trucking school and most of the rigs there have Eaton 13 speeds. I've gotten really really good at shifting within a couple weeks, but it only just recently clicked with me how the 13 actually works, and then I got curious about 18 speeds. It looks like they're basically the same with the exception of being able to split the lower range. They don't want us using the splitter very much there though, so I think it'll be a lot of fun getting to mess around with that when I'm finally in my own truck.

Practice with that 13 you have and remember you do not need to split every gear you can bypass the split and go directly to your next gear of choice
      Keeping in mind
Traveling speed and engine speed you can master that

Stay safe and be good to all that is around you out there 👍😊

I had one of those transmissions in a heavy haul truck with a C-15 @ 550 HP. It also has a switchable rear end ratio between 4.11 and 5.66. The 4.11's would run down the highway as much as 80 MPH but when I used the 5.66 ratio 65 was all I could do, but the 5.66 ratio felt real strong when you were grossing 300,000 pounds. We had an old Ford dump truck that had a turned around 15 speed and a 3406 @ 425. My drivers called it "The Time machine" and one driver that claimed he run it out claimed the clock on the dash ran backwards when he topped out. Here's to big trucks and good truck driving stories.

Shift it like a 13 speed until you get to the last two shifts, which shows 7th and 8th gear, then use the side splitter on those last two. Just remember to split on low or back before shifting down to the 8th then split again for your last gear for your highway speeds.

And also having an understanding of what drivers of big rigs are doing technically , makes me want to give them some more room to do their thing and I do ! Well done.

I drive a 18 speed 880t roll-off truck. We have been struggling for drivers but all we can find are new drivers and they all took their course in an automatic. Boss decided to start replacing the fleet with automatics. Me and the other lead driver asked to keep our trucks as long as possible. Boss promised to buy us manuals. Driving manual anything is a dying art. Told my wife then when our daughter learns to drive she will be learning in my manual Mazda 3 and not her automatic.

That was an excellent explanation. I used to drive a little 5 tonner here in New Zealand doing metro freight, 6 speed manual. Tried an 18 gear once. I cleaned the teeth in the gearbox more often than not. I heard many times that the eaton transmission was almost impossible to damage, one of the most forgiving transmissions out. You would be an excellent tutor for teaching ones like me how to drive a tractor trailer unit. Sounds like you've got the patience (to a certain level) to teach ones like me who clean the gearboxes teeth.

  • @jeffhead4632
    @jeffhead4632 4 роки тому +17

There's also a secret 19th gear....Granny low in high range. when unloaded it enables you to stay in high range be able to take off in about the equivalent of 3rd gear and go straight to 5th without having to go through the first 4 gears and change to high range. good for pulling out into high speed traffic and getting out of your own way. but you can only use this secret gear combo when your empty/solo or else you'll shave some life off your clutch. you can also split the the transition from granny high to 5th to ease the rpm transition.

The mechanic said ignore the selector and drive it like an 8 speed (just use the hi and low(finger selector without the thumb) and it works like that. I drove for the first time in 14 years like I hadn't missed a step... except for the transmission issues...lol. with practice I will get this too...lol. they are all scary til you get some time in the 'cockpit'.
