  • I love Mukdahan and you would too, but you'll probably never visit, will you? In this video, Dagwood needs to get his truck detailed and takes a stroll while waiting for it to be finished. You'd be surprised at how many modern conveniences are available in Thai cities considered to be in the "countryside" far from Bangkok.
My experience in The Mook so far has been screaming Wifi, modern shopping malls and when I needed a split-air air conditioning unit the same store I bought it from sent a technician out to install it within an hour of purchase!
Situated on the Mekhong River on the border with Laos, prehistoric paintings and other archaeological discoveries show that the area of Mukdahan was the site of ancient communities. The modern era of the city began late in the Ayutthaya Era which was from 1350 to1767.
"The Mook" was established at the mouth of Muk Creek (Thai: ห้วยมุก) and named Mukdahan from "Kaeo Mukdahan" which was derived from "Kaeo" แก้ว meaning a drinking glass or a jewel. Muk มุก means mother-of pearl and Da ดา is a verb meaning to advance along a wide front and Han หาร is a verb meaning to divide.
Haw Kaew Watthanatham is a tall tower from which you can view the Mekhong River and a panoramic view of the city of Mukdahan. Go there to find information on local tourist attractions such as the giant Buddha and see displays of local ethnic groups as well as local history. Video on the tower to come soon.
The same great Thai and western food is available in The Mook at reasonable prices, the people are good looking and friendly, there are at least two really cool night markets-- what's not to like?
Here's a video about the mall in The Mook:

Another excellent video brother thank you for sharing your experiences. I’m 7 years from retirement and can’t wait to be able to spend half the year in Thailand. Till then I’ll keep working on my Thai lessons and enjoying your videos till we can get back for a short visit next year.

So glad you're enjoying the videos, thanks for sticking with us! I try to subtly work Thai language & culture into each one so I hope it's helpful. Do you know where you'll stay in Thailand?

We went through Mukdahan going from That Phanom to Korat last year. Stopped at the tower but the elevator was broken so didn’t go up. Went up Roi Et tower though.

Wow, sounds like you have experience off the beaten path, that's fantastic! Next time you pass through the Mook check out Phu Pha Toep and the giant Buddha.

We are looking at the Seka area near Bueng Kan we Breed Betta “Plakat” there are some very good collecting sites in that area. Being rural we can rent a home on a few Rai and set up a small fish farm and export back to the states.

Amazing Thai language teacher "Khru Khim" lives in Seka, Bueng Kan. I've never been but she likes it a lot and it's on my list of places to visit so I'll probably check it out in the next couple months. Keep us posted on your fish business!
