  • Jungle Monks in Thailand, particularly the northeast or "Isan," practice Buddhist monasticism within Thai Theravada Buddhism. These Jungle Monks inhabit remote wilderness and forest dwellings for spiritual training. In this episode of American Jungle Monk, Dagwood and his fellow Monks from Roi Et province travel to Yasothon province to take part in the Buddhist holy celebration of Boon Gatin, which lasts an entire month.
    The name "Isan" is derived from the Pali word IAST, meaning "northeast", in turn from the name of Iśāna (Sanskrit: ईशान), a manifestation of Shiva as deity of the northeast. Isan's culture is predominantly Lao, and has much in common with that of neighboring Laos. This affinity is shown in the region's cuisine, dress, temple architecture, festivals, and arts.
    The Buddhist temple (or wat) is the major feature of most villages in Isan. These temples are used for religious ceremonies, festivals, and as assembly halls. They are mostly built in Lao-style, but with less ornamentation than the more elaborate central Thai temples or the Lao-style temples in central Laos. Lao-style Buddha images are also prevalent.
    The majority of the Isan region is ethnically Lao, but distinguish themselves not only from the Lao of Laos but also from the Central Thai by calling themselves khon Isan. The main language is Isan, the name by which the Lao language is called in Thailand for political reasons, though most people in the Isan region still call it Lao among themselves and in non-official settings.
    Yasothon province is about 500 km (310 mi) from Bangkok.

      You said it perfectly! Yasothon really has wonderful people and the jungle areas and temples are beautiful, rustic and exotic like western kids see in their dreams as children.
      So glad you are enjoying the experience!

    Do you meditate for any time during the day? Like do u need to sit for a certain amount of time daily?

    • @DagwoodsThailand
      @DagwoodsThailand  3 місяці тому

      Thank you for asking! I use Vipassana style to meditate every morning after waking and then brushing my teeth. The length of time changes every day because sometimes I'm quick to slip into nothingness and sometimes it's more difficult if something is distracting me. I also meditate while walking every night after the sun goes down which is not as effective but still helpful. Keep up with your meditation, it's important to train your mind. Thanks for watching! 🙏🙏🙏

    Please correct the word "Wat Pa" not "Wat Ba".

      Native English speakers pronounce "Pa" as "ผ้า" the word for clothing which would cause confusion. "ป่า" more closely resembles "Ba" in English. There is no formally designated transliteration system for Thai language to English so I spell things the way they actually sound to a native English speaker, not the way Thai people incorrectly transliterate. Thank you sir for commenting, languages are fun and everyone has an opinion.

    Hmmmm. A monk giving a wai to a gaggle of strangers at the end of this video. I don't think monks even wai royalty. Anyway, I wanted to say that I am enjoying these videos, but it would be nice to put some character development into them. Right now, after four videos, all I know is that you're a white guy from Hawaii. You have kids. You're retired. You got into meditation at 17. Other than that, this narrator is a gray void. If you've already covered this please point me to that video. But right now I'm curious about this guy. Why did he decide to move (permanently?) to Thailand? Where in Thailand does he live, and why did he choose that place? Does he live alone? He speaks Thai pretty well, as far as I can tell with my own limited language skills. So how is he learning? Things like that. Things that humanize a narrator. Again, if you've already covered this stuff please point me there. Peace.

      When we say "SATU" and place our hands higher on the forehead than a normal wai it is similar to saying "Amen" in honor of Buddha, not "giving a wai to a gaggle of strangers."
      I appreciate the comment and opportunity to help you learn about Buddhism and Thai culture. I have no plans at this time to tell my entire life story but to enjoy this fun hobby of creating and sharing things that hopefully will be interesting and somewhat educational. I hope you will keep watching and we can learn together. Aloha & SATU!

      Part 2: I just realized who you are, you have a very cool channel! When I met Paddy Doyle he gave me similar advice to be very "personality forward" and maybe I'll do that at some point in the future. Just want you to know that I appreciate your advice especially knowing that it comes from so much experience with art and video making.

      @@DagwoodsThailand LOL! Dude, I appreciate your kind words, but I'm just a retired medical transcriptionist with a LOT of free time. But I do enjoy narrative, and narrative requires a strong protagonist. And you seem to be an interesting guy. So tell us a story about yourself. Something personal, but not so personal that you regret sharing it. I'd watch that.

      I think my personality is more exposed on my other channel "Dagwood Streets" but it's not %100 Thai stuff. Dude your theme song is BANGING I gotta say!

      @@DagwoodsThailand Thanks. I got lucky with the song. Just asked my FB friends if anybody had anything and Trevor had "Whatever." He gave it to me for free. What a mensch.
