Nakhon Phanom is called "NKP" by many foreigners. Phanom Meua (พนมมือ) is to clasp your hands together, which makes the shape of a mountain peak so is that why Nakhon Panom NKP is translated as "Mountain City" even though there are relatively speaking no mountains? Some say it is due to the mountains across the river in Laos.
