Credit cards are not common in Thailand, but we don't actually use cash that much (especially in Bangkok). Every Thai has bank apps on their phones that can transfer money across all banks instantly without fees. This service is not available to foreigners unless you open a bank account here. Don't let the absence of credit cards make you think that Thailand is a cash-heavy society, we're not, we just use a different system (mobile payment instead of cards). But cash is always welcomed, unless you have really large 1000 baht bills, people don't want to accept that because they have no change.

If you are wondering why you have to pay more expensive than Thai people. Please understand that renting a place in tourist attractions is expensive, but selling to Thai people is cheaper because the seller is sympathetic to Thai people because the cost of living of Thai people is quite high compared to income. But you can negotiate the price a little bit. Because Thai people do not add a profit price much higher than the cost, and most importantly, if the product already has a price tag, it is very inappropriate because it seems like an insult to Thai people exploiting tourists. And if asked why having a Thai friend, it will be cheaper. Because sellers tend to think that Thai people's friends who take them with them are like their friends too. Causing sometimes to sell some losses (in this case, it's not much) because I think that taking it on average all day and still making a profit The help of tourists to help with spending makes Thailand have a better economy and will use those money to develop the country. Including attractions, safety, cleanliness and more facilities for you guys. And I'm very glad that you know Thailand and travel. The first point about Duel pricing is definitely something you need to be aware of however - that’s usually in super touristy areas. I’ve lived in BKK for 5 years now and I’ve only experienced this when I’m in Khaosan or on the Sukumvit. Not speaking Thai will put you at a disadvantage when purchasing things because many times the seller cannot properly explain the promotion to you because the communication barrier. Countless times I’ve had money returned to me because I was unaware of a promotion I earned with my purchase. That being said I live in a more local part of Bangkok that has a lot less foreigners. Using Bank Cards - Do not use a foreign bank card to make purchases! Unless it’s an emergency I’d say. The fee will be around $10 in general but Wells Fargo charged me another $15 on top of that. So I learned the hard way. But if you’re planning on living here or just being in Thailand longer than a month you might consider opening a Thai bank account. I use my Thai mobile banking app to pay for 90% my everyday expenses. If that’s not an option you’re just better off paying the 250 Baht($7.40 USD) ATM fee but the most you can withdraw is 20,000 Baht ($590 USD) keep in mind your bank may put charges on top of that as well but definitely better than using your foreign bank card to pay for goods and services directly.
Learning some Thai isn't that difficult. Listen to the sound and write what you hear in English. Here are some examples 1 - Noon 2 - Song 3 - Sam 4 - C, yes the number 4 exactly sounds like C, See, Sea 5 - Ha, like laughing, Ha Ha Ha 6 - Hoke/Joke 7 - Jet 8 - Bat 9 - Gow/Cow 10 - Sip 11 - Sip Et 21 - Yee Sip Et 100 - Roy - like Roy Rogers 1,000 - Pan Water - Nam Ice - Nam Can Rain - Phone Toke Toilet - Hong Nam Shower - Ab Nam These are just a few of the phrases /words you can learn.
Go to the palace, and you pay the farang price. I showed my workpermit, and they still refused. Bluntly telling me "you faring, you go there" pointing at the queue for double-pricing. Despite the fact that her counter-sign had "Thai and workpermit holders". I've been living here for 18 yrs now, my wife is Thai , sad when she overheard how insulting the Thai staff spoke about the "stupid" foreigners , she was ashamed and never ever will set foot in the Palace again. Just be aware that most smiles do not mean they like you or are happy to see you.
I have never seen dual pricing in department stores, electricity bills, water bills, phone bills, internet bills, plane tickets, bus tickets, cinema tickets, concert tickets, shopping mall, food markets, condo maintenance fees, bus fares, train fares, ferry fares, petrol/gas. I have see dual pricing in relation to old people and students.
About cash is not quite true, main paiment method in Thailand is direct bank transaction through QR code, is commission free, but you need a thai bank account to be able to do that. Transfer money to the bank is going to be better then keep using ATM.
I beg to differ on Thailand not having a card infrastructure. In urban areas, other than street vendors, there are a variety ways to pay electronically -- many more than the most e-payment friendly businesses in the US Use QR codes, debit cards, direct mobile debits from banks, a variety of e-wallets, and of course the 2 big US cards, Visa and MC One can tap their chip enabled Visa at Bangkok's MRT. Keep some cash for street vendors, but you can use your cards in almost any brick-and- mortar business.
At 65 years living living in the pnw USA an opportunity to choose where I would want to live out my days happy living life of a fantasy come true it would definitely be living a life in Thailand being a part of it with everything available for me to experience and appreciate and love! that's my choice of having a wonderful dream come true, to wish me luck for that and I reply with best wishes to all!
Even back in 67-68 when I was stationed at Korat with the Air Force, I had a Thai friend who took me to tailor shops where clothing was much cheaper than at shops that catered to American GI's.
Lot people die due to drunk driver , no it is not enforce but it is illegal. Lot of people on motorbikes die from the drunk driver that in 4 wheels vehicles . They drive crazy fast too for such a small street and HWY . The speed limit is there but most don’t care
Good stuff! I haven't been there (bkk) since dial up was a struggle and the trains were being built...definitely the friendliest people I have ever met...even in the "old" days....love it there...THX!
I understand that another difference, at least with the U.S., is that one does not put used toilet paper into the toilet bowl (or loo) but into a separate container.
I am American and I don't use toilet paper when taking a dump. I use the sink faucet /running water 💦 if I can set my bum under it without much issue. So much faster and cleaner just to wash your ass. If you really think about it it makes sense. Thai toilets are also squat, not like the thrones we have here. The proper way to eliminate is to squat as this forces most of the waste out. When sitting on these 👉 👉 🚽 , the body isn't in the correct position 😕. 😅. Sometimes I'm still forced to use TP in America tho 😢. Ask yourself this- if you had shit on your fingers/hands, would you want to just wipe it off with some paper, or 💦 water? What if you were going to eat a 🥪 sandwich immediately? Would you do so after just wiping your hands off with some paper towels 🧻? Now think about you asshole. If you're just wiping with paper you're smearing your faeces and the residue 💩 film is drying up there, caking, solidifying. And you think you're clean 😂 just cause the paper is finally not brown 🤎 after so many wipes. 😂. Water takes 10 seconds tops and there's no paper and no folding, or disposing. Just wash your hands after with soap 🧼
Farang pricing is something to deal with, especially in tourist areas. Always ask for a discount! Thailand has easy pay (cardless, cashless) options, but sadly tourists can't get a bank account to benefit from them. Find another hotel if they ask for double for two guests!
It's not sad. You shouldn't be using those apps even if you could. Are you not aware of the dangers of a cash-less society? In Canada, the government froze the bank accounts of people who were protesting and even those supporting protesters of the government. If we don't have cash, the government can (and will ) control every aspect of our lives. Don't give your freedoms away voluntarily. Boycott anyone who doesn't accept cash.
Nice video. I'm disappointed you didn't show us your lunch, or talk about eating out, which I understand is pretty cheap. As an American, I'm a beneficiary of Thailand's soft diplomacy of financing lots of Thai restaurants, and it's definitely one of my favorite cuisines.
It's only cheap if you eat Thai food or buy groceries, which definitely gets old after a while. It's not cheap for non-Thai food. However, the non-Thai food is excellent, often much better than what you can find in your home country. Portion sizes are realistic though, not insane like the U.S.
Kinda crazy that about 20 years after I was 'stranded' in thailand when the C5 galaxy decided to spring a leak there and we had to wait until the next day to get a part so we could continue on to Afghanistan (yep.. on our way to a 1yr deployment, US Army).. we ended up riding the toyota vans (sort of angularly boxy and fwd with front engine under the front seats).. for like 2 or 3 hours To get to Pataya Hard Rock Hotel. I should have went out walking the town or just headed straight for the beach. There was a big emphasis on getting Thai currency if we were going to leave the hard rock hotel premesis.. watching your video - I wish I had went out exploring while I was there at no cost to myself for that day I was 'stuck' in thailand lol
Thanks! A real review. I see so many travel blogs that try to sugar coat things to not offend or something. This is very good info for the average visitor to have. Seems like a fun place.
Well informed video and spot on.Another element that is completely opposite the western world is the driving habits. Thailand is one of the most dangerous on the streets. Police don't patrol for excessive speed or driving infractions. 20 years before the Thai culture was fairly friendly and approachable but it has changed immensely due the little gadgets that are adhered to their hands. Their capacity for being social has deteriorated dramatically because of the phone. Just go behind central festival in the loading area during the early evening and examine how many of them are sitting affixed to the Facebook. English abilities have also plummeted also as I had read last year in Bangkok post.
I left Thailand before the advent of smart phones. It hadn't occurred to me that, like the rest of the world, they've become zombies to social media. I went to Indonesia after Thailand, and if you had asked me a difference, I would have said cell phone use, but it hadn't occurred to me that I moved just as switch from flip to smart phones happened, and I hung out with rich Indonesians, but poorish Thai people.
If you’re planning a lengthy stay in Thailand, you would do well to make a serious effort at learning the language. The distinctive features of Thai are quite different from those of English, so that the language cannot be learned simply by straight imitation, since there are important contrasts that you will not notice by listening only. Such contrasts as aspiration of the voiceless stops, length, tone, rhythm and stress itself are meaningful in Thai in ways that they are not in English. (Similarly, there are meaningful contrasts in English not easily noticed by the native Thai who has not studied English, although many Thais do have some English proficiency.)
One thing the United States is known for worldwide is Americans will talk to anybody they come across in public. Maybe in the biggest cities like New York or Boston it doesn't happen as much, but it's extremely common. I was in an elevator with a stranger just today and we talked about how hot it is outside. Very very common.
I disagree. Oregon is probably the least social place and even if you do strike up a conversation with someone in Oregon it will be an awkward conversation because they are so weird
Was wondering if anyone can help me with a translation. My friend received a message regarding his girlfriend’s conversation with her friend he sent it to and he seemed upset. I don’t know thai but I understood about from google translate something about selling flowers? When i asked him what’s that about He was quiet and told me he’ll see me later. This was the message, “น้องกลับเองได้เด้อ้าย ถ้าอ้ายบ่ว่างอยากให้ขายของดอกหวา น้องสินิ่ง เครื่องไปกะใด้ บ่ยากๆ”. If any native thai could help translate that, I’d really appreciate it. Please, I haven’t heard from him for a couple of days and starting get worried.
been thialand 2 times now, loud aussie, i play them so much, by 5th day i get 5 joints for price of 1 lol. the suit seller's wont ask after 5th day, long haired tattooed aussie, they come and say hi as walken past to try attrack people around me, it comes down to how loud and fun you are, wifi i have like 20 spots for free and there speed ranges from 75 meg to 300meg, beats my aussies 1gig conecction at 275/20 meg. thia broadband is free and made if u go the rite place, every place has 5 different connections
About paying with cards. True, it's not widely spread. But nowadays paying via promptpay with your phone is very fast going to be the most convenient way of paying. Whether it is only 10 baht or 10.000 Baht.
You just pay driver 10 baht (20-30 us cents) when u get off Its a Great service If it was a short journey sometimes the driver wouldn’t even want my money
1. Isn't that true everywhere you go? Locals always get a better deal... 2. Yes, cards are not accepted on the streets as much, however, generally foreigners avoid street food, for example. In most other places you go, malls, restaurants, shops, hotels, cards are accepted. I get by using my Greek debit card in most places, without any problems. 3. Best thing to do is buy a local sim card upon arrival. They have quite good packages, both price-wise and speed-wise. This way you will not depend on the availability of wi-fi wherever you go. Again, this is true for most places. 4. No opinion about buses and trains in Thailand. Taxis/Uber are quite cheap and safe and going by Tuk-Tuk is an experience that is not for every day, but a must-try! 5. I always book my hotel using one of the most popular websites. I always need to put the number of guests and I always pay in advance, without being charged more upon arrival. Mind you, I only visit Bangkok. 6. Very true about meeting and talking to strangers. 7. I only counted 6 differences, but nevermind!
My Thailand trip is in 8 months. Most hotels I find are book now and pay later. Are there hotels that I can book now and pay now? So I don’t have to worry about that expense during my trip.
The people in Thailand seem so much more friendly and kind. People are angry and defensive here in the USA and much more than they used to be these days...
@@tempustv Thailand is an enigma I’ve been living here for past 22 years… I’m no more closer to understanding the culture than when I stepped of the plane. “Enchanting” isn’t a big enough word.
I have Thais asking me to buy things for them at markets, Often they don’t like to go as hard as I can go on the price. That’s speaking Thai of course.
If you need a bank card, I suggest opening a Charles Schwab Bank account. You can use the bank card to withdraw money from your account at both banks and ATMs in many countries. There is a fee that is charged, but Charles Schwab will refund any extra fees at the end of the month. You can also do investments from the Charles Schwab account into the stock market. It's a very handy card to have.
My husband and I are planning on moving to Thailand for a few years. He's been there before and loved it, it's cheaper, nicer, and more fun. That said. Any advice would be appreciated.
@@tempustv btw gonna come to Bangkok this July for 2 weeks. As I understand it is the rainy season, so we prepared huge umbrellas just in case 😎 Here in St.Peterburg (Russia) we are pretty much used to heavy showers 😄 Thank you for your videos, love them ❤🔥
I live in the middle of Thailand, with rice fields all around me. I have 3BB 1GB UP and 1GB Down, and it is HIGHLY reliable. SO, yea... the internet is great. I have a backup mobile wi-fi hotspot on my 5G Phone. SO, I have never had a problem with high speed internet.
One thing I want to comment on: about the "cash" thing, I carry cash, in coins and bills of various denominations. It is more normal. Feeling unsafe and insecure in an alien environment you will want to have money at hand - enough money to pay for the emergency, pay for hotel room, buy someone a drink, bribe someone..... On the other side of that I have miscounted sometimes and had to endure the embarrassment of having a Thai person run after me with a 1,000-baht note that I dropped. Similarly with a telephone , a passport.... You get the idea. I have had phones and money stolen from me in the U.S. - as many other people have. But NEVER in Thailand. A taxi driver may not have change for your 1,000 baht note ( say $30.00, roughly) and go somewhere to make change for you - I have had that happen. Matter of fact, I have had a Thai guy chase me down on his m.c. to give me back the phone I had rode away without.
in 20 plus years of comming to Thailand i have never seen or heard or have been charged a hotel resort fee ! this must be in very few places... L.A Rob
That's why we western men all go to Thailand😂 , to get away from the blue haired overweight nose 👃 ringed bitchy attitudes here. Very rare to find a genuinely nice attitude woman here in USA and from what I here anywhere in Europe, too. Especially the UK. And the women are mad because of it and say it's loser men and incels who are going to Thailand to 'prey' upon the poor women there. No, you're in denial, deary. It's because your attitude stinks, you're overpriced, overrated, and disrespectful to men. Most Thai women are feminine, petite, sexy and willing to have sex at the drop of a hat.
Would it be possible to chat off line, I would like to move to Jomtien for a year or so, but need to talk to a straight shooter like yourself. willing to pay a fee for your time.
Hmmmmm I'm about 100% positive you made the Disney version here. There are a few more things I might add that for me were culture shock when I was there. Albeit it was many years ago I doubt it's changed that much.
a lot of what you said is slightly off... especially about paying for things .. if you are a local and have a cell phone, I use SCAN to pay for almost everything, except street food...... mostly of the "inconvenience" is because you are a tourist... not a local... I find Thailand is way more convenient to do just about anything, compared to the USA
I took my gf and her 2 kids to Pattia from BKK on spec once. Went to get a room at the Siam Bay View hotel. (Probably not there anymore) asked about room prices. Was told a figure, then I asked if they discounted airline . . . I never finished the sentence and the hotel receptionist said OK, OK I give you 50% off. Result got 2 adjoining rooms for the price of one. Kids had the room service while we were out. It was a long time back now but even so 2 rooms for 2 days for £60 was good.
Well if you speak Thai it goes a long way . I’ve lived here for 10 years total Tourists get ripped off Especially by Tuk Tuk operators, there expensive, Thais don’t use them unless they have to If you’re a tourist use a metered taxi , and make sure it’s turned on .
Internet in Thailand is one of the fastest and most powerful in the world. You need to study your package carefully. Speed and strength depend on the package you sign up for.
A certain demographic talk about white privilege but Thai privilege definitely exists. It's not just Thailand, either. The whole of South East Asia is the same. The thing is, we just accept it. It's their culture.
That is really the one aspect that has dulled my enthusiasm for it; the unrelenting heat, although the highlands at night are probably more tolerable....
If I went to Thailand to visit, I probably have to learn the phrase "I was adopted from Bangkok by Swedish parents when I was 6 weeks old, and I grew up in Sweden, so I only speak three sentences in Thai"
Your comment about public transportation, leads me to believe you lived on the West Coast or middle America before Thailand, b/c the T in Boston is great, NYC and Chicago also have great transit. Not so much on the West Coast. In California, you need a car. In Boston or NYC, not really.
Must comment... Pattaya is not Thailand. My thai-wife and other thais I know, say that often. Pattaya is a synonym for rude and insulting behaving farangs and poor girls who go there to make living as prostitutes. Generally Thailand is very conservative. I've been in Pattaya few times. Thais say it is for ripping off farangs. Almost everywhere you will get less fruits from street seller, higher prices in reastaurant and so on than locals. Thailand is cash society for tourists not for locals.
Yup. Can't approach people in America. We always think there is a catch or bad incentive to friendliness. That would make life less stressful if culture was more like Thai.😊

Here are some examples
1 - Noon
2 - Song
3 - Sam
4 - C, yes the number 4 exactly sounds like C, See, Sea
5 - Ha, like laughing, Ha Ha Ha
6 - Hoke/Joke
7 - Jet
8 - Bat
9 - Gow/Cow
10 - Sip
11 - Sip Et
21 - Yee Sip Et
100 - Roy - like Roy Rogers
1,000 - Pan
Water - Nam
Ice - Nam Can
Rain - Phone Toke
Toilet - Hong Nam
Shower - Ab Nam
These are just a few of the phrases /words you can learn.

Travel to Thailand often. I have never seen extra fees from any hotel?

Even back in 67-68 when I was stationed at Korat with the Air Force, I had a Thai friend who took me to tailor shops where clothing was much cheaper than at shops that catered to American GI's.

It is common for Thai people to drive drunk, and police do not target drinking and driving. Be very careful crossing the street late at night!
Yes they do, they have stops at night

I understand that another difference, at least with the U.S., is that one does not put used toilet paper into the toilet bowl (or loo) but into a separate container.
rememeber they use the bum gun to clean the toilet paper is just to dry off...
Yes we use the bumgun to clean the mess, then the paper is just to dry off your butt (please don't put your shit in the bin).
Holy crap! I ol
Why not put toilet paper in the bowl? Do not put half a roll. The density of the toilet paper is less then the debris you place in the bowl.
Boycott anyone who doesn't accept cash.
go in low season its cheaper & you can always walk to next seller !
Nice video. I'm disappointed you didn't show us your lunch, or talk about eating out, which I understand is pretty cheap. As an American, I'm a beneficiary of Thailand's soft diplomacy of financing lots of Thai restaurants, and it's definitely one of my favorite cuisines.
Thai vegan food is the best
It's only cheap if you eat Thai food or buy groceries, which definitely gets old after a while. It's not cheap for non-Thai food. However, the non-Thai food is excellent, often much better than what you can find in your home country. Portion sizes are realistic though, not insane like the U.S.
Kinda crazy that about 20 years after I was 'stranded' in thailand when the C5 galaxy decided to spring a leak there and we had to wait until the next day to get a part so we could continue on to Afghanistan (yep.. on our way to a 1yr deployment, US Army).. we ended up riding the toyota vans (sort of angularly boxy and fwd with front engine under the front seats).. for like 2 or 3 hours
To get to Pataya Hard Rock Hotel.

In all of SE asia, Thailand is probably the least crazy on the roads. Yes, it is less disciplined than the "west" but not really that bad.

Yes, it happens in New York too. People can be very friendly if you can spot the normal ones from the weirdos lol.
I disagree. Oregon is probably the least social place and even if you do strike up a conversation with someone in Oregon it will be an awkward conversation because they are so weird

most Thais carry cash because not ever were has the eftpos for 💳 or 📱
There are very few places that I cannot pay with my card or my banking app by scanning.
About paying with cards. True, it's not widely spread. But nowadays paying via promptpay with your phone is very fast going to be the most convenient way of paying. Whether it is only 10 baht or 10.000 Baht.
yea, there's no fee even if you're transferring 0.01 Baht.
There's like 5 gazillion Baht buses around in Pattaya. Like every 3 second one goes by 😅 It's awesome. For like 20 cents 😅
Bangkok buses good too at 8 baht 😮
Do they have like a bus card or something?
@@DaygoKid94no
You just pay driver 10 baht (20-30 us cents) when u get off
Its a Great service
If it was a short journey sometimes the driver wouldn’t even want my money
Thai t sreet food is good, cheap tasty and clean
My Thailand trip is in 8 months. Most hotels I find are book now and pay later. Are there hotels that I can book now and pay now? So I don’t have to worry about that expense during my trip.
I would not do it except if u been there before like no. For room or advise U can always find a place there are tons of opportunities 🎉
The people in Thailand seem so much more friendly and kind. People are angry and defensive here in the USA and much more than they used to be these days...

L.A Rob
You may be asked to leave a cash deposit but never seen a resort fee. Maybe it is for 4 or 5 star Hotels with amenities not common in other hotels.
Like feminine, beautiful, weight appropriate women without nose rings and purple hair and attitude. Definitely not normal on the U.S.

Hmmmmm I'm about 100% positive you made the Disney version here. There are a few more things I might add that for me were culture shock when I was there. Albeit it was many years ago I doubt it's changed that much.
Can you tell us what some of those things were?
Anyone else sick of the knife/cleaver commercial by the Mohawk guy?
a lot of what you said is slightly off... especially about paying for things .. if you are a local and have a cell phone, I use SCAN to pay for almost everything, except street food...... mostly of the "inconvenience" is because you are a tourist... not a local...
I’ve lived here for 10 years total
Tourists get ripped off
Especially by Tuk Tuk operators, there expensive, Thais don’t use them unless they have to
If you’re a tourist use a metered taxi , and make sure it’s turned on .
Internet in Thailand is one of the fastest and most powerful in the world. You need to study your package carefully. Speed and strength depend on the package you sign up for.
They take cards everywhere except street vendors. Not sure why you said that.
Things are not always cheaper for Thais. Only in tourist areas which most of us here don't live in.
A certain demographic talk about white privilege but Thai privilege definitely exists. It's not just Thailand, either. The whole of South East Asia is the same.
The thing is, we just accept it. It's their culture.
