I still find it inncredible how games running on Proton just work so much better than native linux ports Developers just don't care and thanks to Valve it's actually a problem to nobody now - no one has to write extra ports nor lose their library (well, aside from anti-cheat -,-)
Generally speaking, the native port usually works better as there's often something that just isn't quite right on proton even if it isn't something that's really an issue for the gameplay
Quality Linux port has better performance (many engine like Unity, Godot provide it on click). I use 7yo laptop with intel integrated graphics and Linux port is way more comfortable to play.
@@torbergqvist8151 It really depends on age. In my experience, Native ports made in the past 5-6 years or so tend to work flawlessly. But games older than that are a mixed bag.
@@theairaccumulator7144 I'm developer. It's easy. You just press one button for choosing platform. If developers don't provide port it's mean that they're lazy.
I think is also bc many games rely on old dependencies that are no longer used/maintained but since proton/wine just convert the calls, they can convert something old to something similar new on Linux and that’s it Is funny when you need mods to get an old game to run on windows, or use PCem/DOSbox but can easily be run in proton/wine
@@Просто_Иван let me help you, (modern) NVIDA GPU or not? Because if you have a modern NVIDIA GPU, you can have an out-of-the-box OS with Nobara, no drivers needed. And do you have other good specs? This is one of my favorite Linux features. There are some games like Wolfenstein 2009 or The Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher bay that are a bear to run on Windows 11 because of that lack of compatibility but Wine accounts for all different types of Windows thus making it easier to run these games on there. There are even some games that run better with fewer CPU cores like Wolfenstien or even Crysis 1, and wine makes that so much easier to do compared to Windows,
Well kinda, They need to make money after all. Thogh this is a 3 birds with 1 stone: -MS doesnt get an OS monopoly to tell valve to pay up -They get to provide their games and hardware at a lowered cost (no windoof license) = more sales -They look good in the public eye for doing that
I am not a programmer or a developer. I just don't understand why would I need to upgrade my laptop that I only use for Word, Excel and Chrome. Or my gaming PC? And as I've been told, the process of windows change is still annoying as 10 years ago (no drivers after update, need to do full backups and so on).
Microsoft spends tons of money on backwards compatibility. If you think otherwise, check out help menus in basic windows on Windows: you can end up with Windows 3.1 style windows that do run on 11.
Thanks to Vavle Linux gaming is pretty much there, except for kernel level anticheat games i guess. I am curious how anticheat would work on Linux, there is no way they gonna put that thing into the kernel 😂
Microsoft isn't making money on them isn't entirely true. The reason windows 11 even has any adoption rates is that people are dependent on windows software. If Software support gets worse Windows might lose its market lead rather quickly. So I'm not sure what Microsoft is planning as they are currently stirring towards losing the os market.
Proton is a fork of Wine, development of which is funded by Valve. However, both are open source and accept external contributions. This means if some nerd in their basement figures out how to run game xyz, eventually Wine and Proton will be able to play the game xyz in question. Also, Windows slowly removes ancient API calls (features), while Wine aims to implement every single one ever existed in every copy of Windows.

I see it too. This is gonna be good. For 30 years we've been yelling about the Year of the Linux Desktop, but this time we actually have a good point!

You still need DOSBox for DOS games. In fact, when Wine detects a DOS executable it attempts to launch DOSBox automatically for you.

I didn't even think about the fact that the release of the Steam handheld was a huge win for Linux gaming.

And i still need to include "does not work on msdos" in every .exe header...😊

Windows 10 will be EOL late next year so it won’t receive security updates anymore. Thats where the problem lies

How can i play witcher 3 in linux
No way someone else out in the world plays c&c too been playing those games since I was little little and I’m 29 now and still play them
Great vid!
I love linux and valve. After this, I love much more these 2! ❤❤❤
What was the game shown in 0:24?
Counterpoint, you can literally play old games on your browser
What was the war game shown in the video with tanks and stuff?
Command and Conquer Remastered
Dxvk and DX9py works on windows too.
Popcap games have tons of problems on windows and on linux they work perfectly fine

theres steamvr support for linux

Wine for Windows? Somewhat exists.
I still use Office XP on Windows 10 it works about 90%
Yeah, Office XP is such a great game! I forgot who the developer is... 🤔
And to think that the main reason Windows was so widely adopted is because of those games. Oh well, linux it is than...

i was trying to find a game to play on arch and it has gta III "natively" to linux basicaly and its open source
Wine
I will need to try and play Lego Star wars clone wars game. Tho i will have to get cd reader from somewhere lmao
I can't get proton nor wine to run on my linux mint😢

Heroes of might and magic was a great game
still can not play tropico 3 and 4
and even emulation is better. on average i heard that with emulation you get better fps on linux
