I love this piece! The resin is stunning with this pearl pigments and the colour is in perfect harmony with the wood. The globes are so gorgeous, and the egg form looks like a growing chick in a chicken egg. 😍The natural finial rounds it all up nicely. Congrats to the lucky winner, this lidded dish is a piece of art for eternity!

Life is so stressful, things go way too fast.
Watching your videos with the voice over is kinda soothing. It's relaxing, after a long fast-paced week at the office.
Those who just want the video to be 5-10 minutes should learn to chill.
Thanks for your awesome videos, Jim!

Meant to say this before but one aspect about your voice overs I really LOVE is the fact that you arent getting tired of explaining the same processesd in each video. Thats very very welcoming to new viewers.
In contrast there is some maker channels I am watching where theyre sometimes saying "I explained this step in numerous older videos, go watch those if you want to know whats happening here" and I personally dont think thats very welcoming at all. Your method of always assuming there will be people who are watching for the first time and not giving them homework in terms of "yeah go find yourself another vid in my channel that might or might not explain this" is a lot better. Big thumbs up for you there

    Designer Epoxy
Jim, thank you for your service. I do remember the fallen. My great uncle often talked about his experiences in WWII. He was a communication operator. He was sunk twice and had to wait to be picked up. He was told not to be captured and even had a capsule on a chain around his neck.
Why did I bring that up, well it’s because he lied about his age and was 17 when he was told to do that. That’s just insane, but because of him, and you as well, I didn’t have to worry about anything serious and was care free at 17 years of age.
I also remember when I was in grade four and saw a tattoo on someone’s wrist. I’m from North York and lived in an area that had a lot of Jewish people. I remember seeing the tattoo on our crossing guards wrist and asked him what it meant. He told me to ask my mother.
I remember crying when I learned why the tattoo represented. I also remember giving him the biggest hug the next time I saw him and we cried together.
I also remember my grandmothers best friend every November 11th. She didn’t serve, as she was Japanese, and spent the war in an interment camp. She was married to an abusive man and when the war started she was given a choice. She could return to Japan, or spend the war in a camp.
She was very young when she was made to marry an important man in their village. She being female she was never asked whether or not she wanted to marry this man, she was just told that that’s what she was going to do. She was 15 years old when this happened.
Her husband blamed her for giving birth to a daughter and that due to complications of the birth was unable to bear anymore children. He decided to return to Japan and out of spite he took his daughter with him when Mae decided to stay in Canada. He did that to hurt her one more time.
Why did I bring this up, unfortunately they went back to their home town, and that happened to be Hiroshima. She lost her entire family, she lost everyone in her family as well as everyone she knew as she grew up when Hiroshima was bombed.
I knew Mae as a wonderful woman who was always positive and lived life to its fullest and she never had anything bad to say about about anyone that I knew. You couldn’t help but like her.
I only learned about her life story until after her death, as well as most others in her life. But I was not surprised when I learned that she didn’t hold a grudge against anyone. She never blamed the US for dropping the bomb that wiped out her family or even the people who put her in the internment camp.
I just wanted to share those stories with you. I do thank you for your service, as well as those who have in both served in the past and present. I also think of those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice so that I can live the freedom that I do.
Once again, thank you for your service, I really do mean that, seriously thank you.

Wow, that’s a sad story! They need to do a movie about that! I often think of people that I’ve met in foreign lands and what happen to them after we left. Srebrenica comes to mind, I was there with the Royal Canadian Regiment in 93 and wonder how many survived the massacre. Thank you for your great comment!

@@SpragueWoodturning unfortunately there are to many stories like that. I still believe that Remembrance Day should be a holiday like is used to be. Once again thank you for the hardships you’ve suffered so that the rest of us can enjoy the freedoms we all have.
I tried to join the militia, but a back injury from a motorcycle accident made me fail the physical. I’ve always felt a bit guilty over that.

Here's a story about a carbide tool: Senior year, metal shop class, using a triple-bladed carbide cutter on an endmill, was milling my piece, when I got distracted; turned the machine on, in reverse. Did $70.00 worth of damage in under three seconds. Then I had to tell my teacher; Mr. Fowler wasn't happy. God bless him. Learned my lesson.

It's nice that you're releasing shorter videos for those who prefer them. I'll probably stick with the longer ones, as I find the whole process interesting to watch. I might go so far as to say I find them soothing. You've helped this viewer fall asleep many a time when insomnia strikes, as long as I start the playlist back to the episodes that I've seen many times.
As for today's project, I love it. You used box elder burl, my favorite. The fuschia resin is pretty. I like the finial. Put it all together to make that cute little box, and you have a winner. Someone out there is going to feel very special by owning such a treasure.
Sadly, I failed yet again to win the mega millions lottery, probably because I didn't buy a ticket. But if luck comes my way, I have several things in mind to commission you to make for me. Until then, keep up the good work!

To the family members whose soldier's didn't come home safe, I pray for you and send you my love and respect. Forgive me if I'm wrong but it seem's that after 911 was the last war that our ally's worked together with us and I thank you from the bottom of my heart, I should mention that my nephew as an active soldier and his father a reserve soldier served at the same time. It was a scary time for our family and it meant a lot that they weren't there alone.

Yes, Afghanistan is the last war we’ve been involved with. I have two tours there and worked with the Americans quite a bit, namely the wrecker crew as that is what I did over there on my last tour in the Panjwayi District area. It was pretty crazy times. Thank you very much!

All looks good to me. I like the knob and the resin staining on the one side just adds character. Designer Epoxy did great, no cracking in the pour. Thanks for your service Jim and to all your comrades.

I am so glad you kept the natural end on the finial. I'm also glad you have a shorter video option for those who want short videos. I'm a fan of the longer, more educational ones. I think my favorite part of the Removal From Form are the brief pauses where you appear to be assessing your options. :)

Hey Jim. The top really wowed me. And anyone who doesn’t like the finial can just try doing one themselves. The colors couldn’t have been better. Wasn’t crazy about the ball thangs, but they did provide a nice contrast to the squiggle edges of the wood. And the chatoyance of of the wood…always amazing!
Would you ever consider giving us a tour of your personal collection? I image there are many of us who would enjoy seeing how you’ve learned and how your creative impulses have changed. I see this as a full video that would run mid week so as not to annoy the ones who aren’t interested. (who wouldn’t be interested in such a gift?) Never stop going with your ideas!

Jim - I continue to marvel at your talent. Your projects are never the same but always beautiful. Put me in the “Like” camp for your voiceovers. I’m not a turner myself but I always enjoy hearing a craftsman explain what he’s doing and why. I do look at videos posted by other wood turners who don’t do voiceovers and I think they are doing their viewers a disservice.
A suggestion for the globes: have you looked at the trays for making spherical (or cubic) ice cubes? They might allow you to make globes without flat spots.
Ignore the haters and keep doing you. If they don’t like your videos they can go watch someone else’s.

I love the textured knob that echoes the texture of the burl surface in the piece. The difference in the two sides, both the color of the pinky on one side with the purpley on the other as well as the penetration of the resin into the two burl pieces is just interesting.

Only about 10 minutes into the video and just wanted to say on the subject of you replying to comments; when I left my very first comment on one of your projects, I was SO surprised to get a reply back, that is not a very common thing to get and it was really lovely. That said, with the way your channel is growing and the number of comments you're getting, even if you take out the ones entering into the draws, that's still hundreds of comments - which is incredible engagement, but you're a busy guy haha, for myself - and maybe others too - if we're not asking questions and just telling you how awesome you are, and your work is; you don't need to thank us :D Sharing these projects and your expertise with us is more than enough

For the first time I played music in the background, Some "Maceo Parker" blues. Was different, still your over the music. Please don't ever give up the talk over. It puts your post on top if you ask me. And you didn't...lol The color of the resin came out outstanding, and the balls are a great off set. Wood is a living thing even after it's been cut down, that's one of the things I loved about it back in the days I worked with wood. The top of the knob was a nice touch. A stunning piece indeed sir.🌿 👍👍👍👍👍

The natural top of the burl was a wise choice. I think this is a wonderful creation. 🥰
