  • Woodturning - In this video I combine boxelder burl pieces with crystal purple tinted resin from Designer Epoxy to make this incredible two bowl set. Lots of issues dealing with a crack in the base of the large bowl and I try a number of techniques to correct it. Enjoy!

Jim, I share your pain and admire your patience. My Son married a French girl and, for obvious reasons, we haven’t seen them for two years. But the French have a saying when they learn something new: tonight I go to bed less stupid. Think on that and smile each time something doesn’t go according to plan. And anyone would be in love with your work. All the best to yourself and your family for Christmas 🌞

Jim: after all the frustration they still turned out very nice. The colours are vivid and the burl pieces look good. It would have been nice to turn the little one but as you said there would have been nothing left to see. I was hoping you would have spent more time wailing on the bucket but , well you found another way. "Maybe Santa will drop off that propane furnace for you next week." Wouldn't that be a surprise for you. Stay safe and keep smiling! Take care.

Another gorgeous bowl set Jim. I think I like the little bowl better than the big one. When you were showing the bowls at the end I thought I saw a little critter or a fish in one of the small, free-floating pieces of burl. Did you see it too? I continue to be impressed by the positivity and sense of humor you exhibit when you encounter difficulties. I wish you were closer. I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy sitting down and having a beer with you.

So... I generally watch ur vids on my TV but have to get on the phone to leave comments. I haven't made it 5 minutes into the video yet and had to comment... Who cares about the people who don't like long videos... UA-cam has this little button that allows them to fast forward. If they can't figure it out then maybe they can go to hell. They are the same type of people that always bitch about something. I appreciate all the videos regardless of time. Can't wait to see the rest of the project. Sorry about my bluntness. I know you have to play nice to get/keep as many subscribers as you can. Thanks for the content.
I finished the vid. I think the sign of a good teacher and true pro is the ability to show multiple way to accomplish a finished piece and how to think it of the box to fix problems. I appreciate the work around for putting a foot on that smaller core without having a vacuum chuck and that was a great idea with the CA glue in the vacuum chamber. Thanks again

However - when that school day stretches into two or three days that really does challenge the patience.
I am sure I would have taken a mallet to it.
At the end of the day though, that is one cracking bowl (no pun intended) and I am sure the customer is going to be more than delighted.

Jim - the bowls came out very well in the end. Way to persevere! I empathize with the epoxy issues as I was performing a “touch up” pour on a piece that I thought was ready to turn. On the coring front, I think you are right about sticking with the smaller radius knife set on the shallow bowls. Whenever the post for my knife goes past the midpoint of the bowl I go smaller. It’s counter intuitive but you also end up with a deeper core that way. Keep up the good work.

If u charged your client by the hours and work put into that bowl I don’t think she could afford it. I saw another turner with a similar issue and they cut out the the bottom of bowl and replaced with some small vertical burl pieces using clear resin it was beautiful and unusual. I don’t know if that would even have worked on your piece which was still beautiful but can’t be used for food use case of wholes. Jim you do great work you’re the reason why I’m such a UA-camr.

Lovely result despite the nemesis of the thermal crack. I realise that it's not open to a vote, but if it was, I would definitely vote for the longer videos without hesitation. I've not seen anyone who provides as much entertainment and information as you. I would also like to take the opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy Christmas, and a fantastic and prosperous new year!

Sorry that I've not had much time to comment on your videos. I enjoy watching them. Lovely bowls, Jim, despite the issues you had with the bigger bowl. I hope the buyer is happy with their purchase :)
Definitely a mixture of purple and blue in the smaller bowl. I really like how it's turned out :)

It may have flaws. But it is a gorgeous bowl. There are so many variables in making things. Relax and enjoy the making.

Great video and beautiful bowl. Glad you didn't let that crack drive you to ruin the final product. I know the feeling.

The finish on the small bowl really bring out the details of the burl. Great job on the big one and you never cease to amaze me on your attention looking for defects and how you work through them.

Jim, still a magnificent piece! I would imagine someone with a very scrutinizing eye would see the divit/imperfection. It's a keeper! 👍🏼

    Jim,
Totally awesome set of bowls. The color of the resin really sets em off with the burl. Great job👍
