I was born in the early '60's and my mother and older sister and I used to have our hair in curlers every night. When I was about 4 y/o I remember mom giving me a Tony Twin perm. Then came the ritual of every night sitting on the floor and mom on the couch as she put curlers in my hair. She then tied the fine netted scarf over my head. Then it was my sisters turn. Somewhere in the early '70's my mom bought her first set of electric (hot) rollers. She walked my sister and me into the bathroom and announced how from now on we could roll our own hair and in just 20 minutes we would have the same look and no more sleeping on rollers anymore.... I have to admit I was happy not to sleep in rollers, but I soon missed my sitting on the floor and handing my mother the rollers or hair brush. It was a nice time talking to mom and watching Bonanza and being pampered. By the mid '70's my hair was down to my butt, straight, and parted down the middle. Sigh.
My mom used to blow dry my hair straight at night, which was indeed good mother daughter time despite the frequent frustration long hair, tangles and loud blow driers can create!
I used to curl my daughters and granddaughters hair with foam rollers. We called them pink curlers because they were pink. We would put the girls hair up in a high ponytail then roll the hair. When we took it down we just unrolled carefully and left the curls. We called them higgledly jiggledly curls. We used that method for many , many dance recitals. It was so cute, plus already having their hair shampooed and set for a up do saved a lot of precious time in the dressing room.. later, about five years ago, I was again able to use those soft curlers on my mother’s hair. She was used to a salon set every week but as she aged she was unable to tolerate the weekly trip. We went right back to those soft sponge rollers. Thank you for demonstrating your personal style using a old favorite set of curlers.
I did my first wet set with foam rollers last night, when I first took them out I thought *Oh crap what have I done* but then I brushed, and brushed, and brushed. It took a bit of time to get the hang of it, but everyone who saw it loved it. :D I'll have to remember to turn the bars down they way you did to avoid the denting, but it was way easier then I expected it to be.
I either use foam rollers or the pillow/rag rollers. I put them in while I'm watching tv and then forget about them until the morning. I ended up going with a hair net to keep them in place as opposed to a scarf as the knot kept pressing into my face. I love a style that's 90% sleep as I'm lazy and don't want to wake up any earlier than I have to before work. Plus I spare my hair additional damage from heat, the chemical damage is a necessary evil of rainbow hair that I can't avoid.
I love how you say 90% sleep, indeed! I find rolling in foam rollers annoying and prefer my curling iron, but in the summer it's too hot sometimes to hold a iron near my head too ;)
TheClosetHistorian I use a curling iron if I don't have time to wet set and it turns out just about as well as the rollers. I don't have much hair (buzzed close to the scalp on the sides/back and chinish on the top) so it never really takes too long to roll them up thankfully. Having them on the top of my head only takes the discomfort down a lot as do pillow rollers. Plus it gives me something to do when I'm watching the office for the 5th time after dinner.
@@Hannahbelleectere 90% sleep hellz yeah! 😉 Rainbow chemical damage: can relate! Must minimize on heat. Can confirm: it indeed helps to have an undercut bc then you don't have to really sleep on rollers since it's all on the top of your head. Yep, I'm with you 💯!
Love this! Getting my hair cut today and am using this video when I need to foam curl!! Your advice and tutorials are helping me immensely in vintage style! Hugs from Ontario, Canada :) Cheers!
I absolutely love the awesome tutorials. I mentioned elsewhere that I am too damned lazy to curl my hair, but I am enjoying all of your hair tutorials. And this one was really great -- very cinematic!
Foam rollers are probably not avaible in my country. :( Would it work if i used plastic rollers? (sorry for my grammar mistakes, English isn't my native language)
Hello Charline! I'm not sure exactly what kind of plastic rollers you've got, but using some sort of sectioning technique, smoothing/detangling each piece before you roll, and doing your best to follow some sort of vintage setting pattern for the curls should all help no matter what kind of rollers you use!
I'm afraid I don't know as I have never done pin curls more than once or twice randomly, perhaps 3 times a year? I don't really use them as my hair is just too thick!

Awwww
I love the old-timetable voiceover!
Your vintage accent is perfect -- you must have a very musical ear.

Very well done. Most helpful. Just like in my childhood.
Thank you Natalya!
Thank you for this! I am horrible at curling my hair and needed a foam roller tutorial desperately!
Me too! Heat does not work for my hair!
I loved this video, and you were just darling! Especially the pose at end, I laughed lol

TheClosetHistorian Thanks for replying. :) I will have my hair cut tommorow so I am going to try it.
I wish you the best of luck!
I did pin curls every 3 day for a couple of months and noticed that the end of my hair was in an unusual bad shape. Did I do something wrong ?
I'm afraid I don't know as I have never done pin curls more than once or twice randomly, perhaps 3 times a year? I don't really use them as my hair is just too thick!
Hair dresser here! Likely the clips shifting on the ends of your hair that regularly.
Music sounds like it’s for a circus.
Sadly I've never been to a circus myself, but I'll take your word for it :)
