- Hey guys! Hope this is somewhat useful! If not, I hope you at least enjoyed watching me cover my entire head in green sludge!
A couple notes:
- The henna color gets darker with each application, so use it sparingly if you want that lighter orange!
- I have used box dye (a deeper red) over the henna and it worked fine for me.
- I use box dye for my roots after the application of henna, it doesn't stick as well to my virgin roots, so I let a bit of time pass with just box dye before dying with henna again. :)

Okay guys, I've been getting a lot of comments about using a metal bowl. I've heard that because this is organic henna, and not mixed with any chemicals or metallic salts, it won't react with the metal. But if you're unsure, just use wooden or plastic utensils. ✌️
The Pinup Companion you can use metal bowls as long as they do have an iron in them. They used to put henna in iron bowls so that it would oxidize with the henna and the resultant mix would dry your hair black without the need for indigo.

So, I'm a professional cosmetologist and the possibilities with henna are amazing! You can use so many additives to change the tones, like beet juice for velvety red, or tumeric for orange red. You can also use day old saffron tea instead of plain water to add the autumnal copper. I'm happy to share any tips if you're ever interested. adding a raw egg or yogurt in helps to hydrate. I also perfume my hair afterward.
You're totally right that it's permanent! The healthiest way to get rid of henna is to cut it off. But now I'm rambling...
AlyCadabra I've heard adding eggs and yogurt while applying henna affects the color deposit, is that true? I've always done protein treatments like that a day or two after doing my henna because I was afraid of messing with my color lol

+Rachel M obviously for the most control of your color, use actual hair color. Henna can be unpredictable. I love how it turns out!
I'm hoping to get a red velvet/ruby red colour so I'm going to mix red wine henna and burgundy henna with beet juice.... hopefully it works out. Lol.
So if I no longer wanted red hair I'd have to just grow it out? I dyed my hair with henna about a month ago and my roots are already starting to show. It doesn't look great but I'm lazy and wondering how long I could get away with it lol. I guess I failed to realize just HOW strongly it stains 😅

I love henna dyed hair and dye my own hair with henna for many, many years already.
I use a different method to "cure" the henna, though. I'm from Germany, but in several hair forums I've read about how it seems more popular in the U.S. to let the mixed henna cure over night. Well, I don't mix mine with lemon juice, as I think that can be quite aggressive on the hair, especially since henna, while good for the hair, can also be somewhat drying. Lemon juice on top of that might cause more breakage and split ends? Don't know...
I boil water, let it cool down for about 10 minutes, then mix it with the henna powder until the consistency is almost like porridge (so also a little more moist than your paste). To help spread it more smoothly on the hair, you can add one or two heaped tablespoons of sugar to the mix. Sounds weird, but does indeed help with the consistency. That's what I do, too. Some people add conditioner, which also helps to apply the henna more easily to the hair.
Then I wash my hair and towel-dry it slightly. It's said, that henna dyes better on wet hair, because the dye in the henna stays active only as long as there is moisture. Of course, you cover your hair with the plastic wrap for that, but wet hair is... well, wetter. XD
I also leave it on for 4-5 hours, covered with a shower cap, and then wash it out. Without using any shampoo, as you're supposed to wait two days until you use shampoo again after dying the hair (so the color can develop to it's final shade properly in that time). But the night before I wash it again after dying, I smother it in coconut oil (any other oil can be used as well), which is also supposed to help give the color a final boost, and, of course, it gives the hair a lovely shine and prevents it from being too dry from the dying. Especially the ends. Throughout the month (I dye about every 4-5 weeks) I repeat the over-night oil occasionally, but mainly because I have waist-length hair and need to maintain it well, if I want to grow it even longer. :-)
I, by the way, actually love the smell of henna. To me it smells just very earthy and herbally. I also love laying in the tub when washing it out and having the whole water turn dark. It's like a mud bath at a spa. LOL Cleaning the tub afterwards is necessary, though, that's true! XD
Mirkwood Descendant I'll have to try the boiling trick! I haven't had any problems with the lemon juice destroying my hair haha, but I'm definitely gonna mix in some conditioner next time!
:-) Ah, I forgot to mention, that with the boiling water, you don't have to let the henna sit over night. I think, the method with the lemon juice requires the long curing time, because it's the lemon's acid, which activates the dye in the henna, and somehow that needs this long to work. With the hot water, you just need to let the mixture sit for about half an hour. I apply it, when it's still luke warm (apparently the warmth also helps with the dyeing process). I've also read about people using hot, red wine to mix their henna, to achieve a more vibrant hue, but when I tried that once, I didn't notice a difference. Maybe my wine wasn't strong enough. XD So many different henna recipes out there! LOL Yes, go for the conditioner! I used to do that in the past, too, and it really helps apply the henna more smoothly. Now I use sugar, like I mentioned, which has a very similar effect. I find, the henna isn't as "glompy", when it's mixed with sugar or conditioner.

I have found that using Vaseline or another petroleum jelly product on your ears and around your hairline and on your hands helps stop most unwanted skin stains. Especially if you are new to doing it. Also a shower cap is so much more convenient to use than the plastic wrap.
You can mix the henna paste with regular yogurt to make it creamier. Also, pure henna will stop depositing it’s color after 3 hours, so you don’t need to leave it on any longer than that. I love henna 🥰

you touch your roots like any other dye? does it turn out the color of the rest of your hair? I heard that henna is a little impredecible, so I was a. little concern about that :(

Your colour looks so pretty! I started dying my hair with henna earlier this year (mainly to cover my greys) and completely love it. I get it done at a local henna salon though, so I avoid a lot of the mess. She mixes it, puts it on my head, wraps everything up, then all I have to do is go home and rinse it out after 2 hours. I'm normally to cheap to pay for things I could do myself, but in this case I find it worth it.
And your henna must smell different than mine! Mine smells like fresh grass and fallen leaves, and I find myself deeply inhaling because I love the smell so much!

Gorgeous! Another couple of tips...
"Terp" the henna by adding some kind of essential oil. Tea tree is the best but I use lavender because it smells better. It's supposed to make it last longer on your hair. .freeze the henna before using. I make mine a couple of days ahead and put it in plastic dye bottles I get off Amazon.
And yes to the comment no metal. Use glass bowl and wood or plastic spoons! Great job though! I try to think of the money I save using henna because the smell and the mess is a pita.

Hey! As someone who's dyed their hair with henna before (and who changes hair a lot) you can bleach henna out of your hair! Mostly it's just if you had blonde hair before dying but it does eventually fade out after about three months and can be taken out! Great video btw~

In my picture you can see my hair was pretty light, but there is this yellow on the middle that never went away, and I bleached my hair like 5 times, I am really surprised that I didn't lose my hair a hahaha after a couple months I was to mad because of the yellow that I just got back to henna hahahaha

I used henna for the first time about 3 weeks ago, my head looked like a stop sign lol. It faded a tad a couple days later to this gorgeous deep copper/red. I have a lot of natural red highlights but have always wanted red hair.
The powdered henna I have used allowed it to be mixed with conditioner instead of lemon juice. Maybe the lemon lightens better, but I found I would get a vivid red orange with my method and the smell was quite nice - like conditioner, obviously, and green tea: bitter and earthy but nice. I personally like the smell of henna! HAHA When I first started doing henna about 6 years ago, I just kind of blobbed it on the best I could. Now, however, I use the parting method that salon stylists use. I use an applique brush. I start at the back and work my way forward. While still messy, the henna goes on much more evenly and isn't as messy.
I used to dye my hair with Henna, but never used lemon juice, only water. Also I used it instantly, and let it sit for a whole night on my head (shower caps and towels around my pillows were my best friends). I think it all comes down as to what type/brand of Henna you´re using? Mine was sent to me by my relatives in Algeria. The instructions were all in Arabic, which I cannot read, so I had an aunt show me how to use it. Worked perfectly fine; smelled like wet soil while putting on and was soooo difficult to wash out the next day. But my hair was much healthier, and the colour was great! The shade the Henna gives you looks stunning on you!
I love Lushes Caca rouge ! It's all natural zero waste, smells unreal and looks fantastic. Oh and you use it instantly instead of having to leave it 12 hours.

I'm using henna since I was 14, I'm 23 now. I'm so glad you made this video, I haven't seen good tutorials on it. But the henna I'm using is probably much stronger, coz I don't have to keep it for 12 hours before applying it on my hair. I usually just add hot water to it and put it on my head. I keep it for 1 or 2 hours, and it's bright red. I wish I could send you the henna I'm using, so you could try it and don't struggle waiting that much)
If you add a little more liquid you get a easier consistency , like yogurt or peanut butter like and then apply it using hair color application bottles. Also you can add in a essential oil so you don't have that alfalfa hay smell. :) When you rinse it out don't shampoo for 48 hours so the henna works its magic.
I used it and it never smelled bad to me. Plus I used a few drops of essential oils like lavender. Also I used distilled water heated up. Worked like a charm. Never tried lemon juice

Great video! I used to use the henna that takes a long time to develop, and I will say the texture of the paste turns out a lot nicer, but lately I've been using this instant one that I found at the Indian grocery store. It's in a tiny box and it just develops instantly, you only need to leave it on for an hour. I find that the color is very similar to the 8 hour one! Good for touching up roots.

(sorry for long link) I actually didn't have a lot of trouble with that with the first product I was using (the one that takes a long time. for that I used the brand Godrej Nupur (which i highly recommend, it's great and only takes about 8 hours total (letting it sit in the bowl and letting it sit in your hair). Anyway never had a problem getting that one to stick but with the instant one it is kinda dry and grainy as a paste and it does fall out when i'm trying to get it to stick.. :( However with the roots it stays better because it's on top of the scalp, it has more trouble sticking on the actual shaft of the hair. I usually wrap my hair in a target bag or two to keep it all in there

I dye my hair with henna and to mellow out the smell I add essential oils or put a spoonful of cinnamon in which makes it smell a bit like tea, at least to me. I also add cocoa butter, which can make it smell lovely and be less drying. I use hot water instead of lemon juice, though, so I'm not sure how well the cocoa butter would distribute with lemon juice instead.

I have never dyed my hair, but I really want to try this. I hope Henna boosts my natural red color. I just don't want it to look too bright. Any suggestions for the most natural look using Henna? Is there different red Henna colors?
as somebody who is brown, i use henna a lot to give my dark hair a reddish tint. it is so good for your hair and always leaves it smooth and shiny after lol

my mom uses henna to dye her hair and get rid of her greys. One way she finds makes the 12 hour process shorter is heating the mixed henna up in the microwave, plus henna tends to work better when hot or warm. ☺
I color mine with henna too!! Been doing it for about 7 years now and people ask me all the time if it's my natural color (I wish *sigh*). Seeing the carrot orange in my hairline when I touch up my roots will never get old.

My mom was losing hair from highlighting so much,henna iterally repairs and thickens it making it strong and shiny.
Caca rouge by lush is amazing :) best red colour ever! And you don't need to leave it out for 12 hours. It also smells nice like Turkish rose tea xxx

It’s not potent. Best to just stick with 100% henna powders.
I use a lush henna bar, I've only done it about 3 times. You melt it with enough hot water to make a really nice baby poop consistency and then, like you said, glop it on. Since it's warm, it blends together a little better. It smells like really strong herbal tea and that smell hangs on better than skunk spray. I swear, every time I get my hair wet it perfumes the air. You don't have to let it sit for 12 hours first, but I do leave it on for about 6 and 1/2 hours in a plastic wrap turban. When you go to rinse it out, it'll feel like legit mud. Icky, gritty, nasty dirt. And be sure to shampoo, because there is a lot of coco butter in there and it conditions deeply. Like, no second day hair for about a week or so, it gets so greasy.

My hair is kind of dark brown with some light brown parts. I really wanna get this color but I feel like it just gonna turn dark red instead of a ginger color. I'm not sure, should I use something else before dyeing it with henna to get it lighter?
I hope somewhere along the way someone let you know it isn't necessary to keep henna on for more than an hour. Please try it. My scalp gets itchy if I leave it on too long. Been addicted to henna for 30 years. The grayer I got, the brighter the color. I do my roots every other week in the summer because my hair grows faster, and I wash it more often. I brew extra coffee and mix it in the henna powder while still warm. Add conditioner and whip until smooth. Also, do mine with the part method since all but my roots stay red. Cover with a plastic bag, squeeze out the air and pin around the edges to keep as much as possible moist. Hope any bit of this helps! Only discovered you recently so getting caught up slowly. I have a question what color of box hair dye do you use for your roots ? And my hair is naturally dark do you think i would be able to bleach my roots every time they would grow out even if I had the henna ?
And do you die your hair or whole head with box dye every time you use henna ?
Can I get to this color if my hair has a bunch of different boxed colored hair dyes ? Or should I bleach out some of the colors first?
I have found that a glaze works fine for me...
Henna and cassia (for a more strawberry color) dye release with chamomile tea for 15 minutes. Add protein and silicone free conditioner or coconut milk. The consistency should be like yogurt. They paint it on. I leave it on for an hour or so...
I mix my Henna with Cherry JeLLO and Water, and it takes care of some of the Pasture/Hay smell. Plus it adds a bit more color to the Henna.
I'm finally taking the plunge after wanting to forever and dyeing my hair with henna this weekend 😬 my hair is super dark brown, so hopefully the color will still show up!

I’m sure it says in the directions, but when you buy the 500g, or whatever how many dying times does that last or do you use it all in one process?
Have you ever tried henna from Lush? They mix it with some natural ingredients like cofee and oils. It also smells great although don't trust me on that because I like natural henna smell as well. They sell it in form of something like giant chocolate bars.
I'm sure it works well, but I find it too expensive and I'd rather use powder than have to chop up a block and use a double boiler to melt it :/

I have literally only just found this. Too funny! I want to go back to using henna on my hair but am not sure 1- where to get the henna you use (I've only ever used Lush henna before and my god do i never want to chop up a block of henna again in my life) and 2- how long I should leave it since last dying my hair with box dye. Rachel boil some green tea with the tea in it over the stove then take the tea bag out and then put the tea in your Hanna and you can still use the lemon juice. The tea will intensify the color just make sure that the tea is not that hot.
The henna I use it is mix and apply right away and you only have to leave in on your head for an hour. My hair is almost as red as yours is here, but I think that is due to the fact that my natural hair is a bit darker than your natural colour. It is called COLORA in a white and blue box. :)

You didn't put lotion or Vaseline on skin to avoid getting your skin dyed. How did that work for you?
And cool to see you can just glob it on vs painting on with a brush. Another video showed brushing it on at the roots and then globbing on the rest like you did.

I am a bit concerned about it being too orange when I dye my hair with henna for the first time so it's good to know it'll change over 48 hours.
Question: does this work with dark brown/black hair? I haven't colored my hair in two years, so currently it's pure virgin hair. I've heard that if the hair is previously uncolored, you don't need to bleach it.
I know this is a really old comment, but I'd still like to answer if you're interested. I dye my dark blonde/light brown hair with Light Mountain henna in "red", fyi. It turns out a bit darker than this girl's hair.
So basically henna can't lighten your hair, only add colour. If anything, it will get slightly darker. If you don't bleach your hair beforehand to a lighter shade, it might not be particularly visible (depending on how dark your hair is) but will still give it a beautiful red tone that will show up really well in the sun. If your hair is dark brown and not black, it will probably be visible indoors too, it just won't be dramatic. Also, it strengthens your hair and makes it really shiny, which is why it's traditionally used by Indian people (who generally have black hair) for health rather than colour. There are many videos on UA-cam of Indian girls dying their hair with it- that should give you more of an idea of how it will look on black hair! It's messy but I think henna's worth it just for how soft/shiny it makes your hair :)

The longer you let it cure for the dye to release the better. I usually mix it the night before i do my application.

How light was your hair the first time you did this? I have brown hair and I'm not sure if I should have my hair lightened professionally first before taking the plunge! I definitely want a more copper-y color, not super dark red.
