What I love about the bathroom fight isn't just that Hunt and Walker are getting beaten up, it's that they're being directly punished for their character flaws. Rarely in the fight do they do anything cooperatively (and when they do it looks more like an accident than anything else), it's two different one-on-one fights happening at the same time, and because the two leads are too stubborn to work together, Lark beats them both. That's great storytelling, the problems don't just happen, they arise because our characters are flawed.
The entire motif of Mission: Impossible, from the beginning, has been that image of the burning fuse, and that's what Fallout does so well, it bakes in that burning fuse tension into every element of the film.
Every time someone shares their sincere, well thought out love for mission impossible, I feel a little less alone in the universe. Stunning work dude, love this!
This was a terrific essay. I think it was back when I saw Captain America in the theatre that I first noticed the back-and-forth of setup and payoff on an action scene, and I’ve been poring over the structure of action scenes ever since. When I’m watching a movie and I can’t tell where the first action scene is going it’s always this “uh oh” moment.
Me at the start of the video: "Who gives a fuck about Mission Impossible?" Me at the end of the video: "I give a fuck about Mission Impossible!" Now that's good storytelling!
I like how you have five elements of action for the five big action scenes in five parts. Makes it all cohesive and easier to comprehend. Also, I had to replay and the laugh at that Goofy transition again, it's good bit.
Brian DePalma has always been my favorite director, so I was over joyed when the first Mission Impossible was directed by him. I love how he doesn't treat the audience like idiots, and has subtle details that make the scenes that much more real.
Idk about the street shots, but they had dozens of real cars out circling the Arc de Triumph as Tom drove against them. If anyone was a few inches of, he’d be toast. Insane.
Mission Impossible 2 is my favorite, good old days as a kid and its the early 2000's how could you not like this one, fallout is my favorite newer Mission
Those cars were CGI . Whaaaat. I love this movie sooo much. Actually Ghost Protocol is my favorite , then 3 after that. But Cavill I like so much in this too
I never noticed that Solomon Lane was a play on Solomon Kane till just now. Though the similarity pretty much ends with the name, unless there's some subtle subtext I'm missing.
Great work - you explain clearly and concisely the fundamentals behind Fallout's absolutely terrific execution. But man oh man, did it not wind me right up that you referred to John Lark as THE LARK, something that the movie never does. Riled me up the same way Peter Pan is referred to as THE PAN in Hook. Anyway, good stuff, more please!

At 17:48 there was also the smartphone moment (or am I not remembering correctly?). Walker hands her the smartphone wholly intact during that Walker/CIA Director conversation scene. Is it the same smartphone that we see (but with broken screen) earlier in the bathroom scene? I understand why you left it out because I don't know whether this will fit in the structure of the essay though. Maybe under Wrinkle but even then it's a stretch I guess. Too small a detail.
@@filmcrithulk1769 Totally understand. But now that I have your ear, do a video on Last Jedi and dramatic function! I would love to see that, especially if you counter it with Abrams' SW movies and how you feel they didn't succeed on executing function.
@@IZEASGT The format offers good ways to look at structural editing. Maybe the same things he wrote about contrasted with Abrams' movies to look at cuts/ a whole sequence?
Serious question: Did you somehow alert UA-cam that you were going to update? Because I just binged your three previous videos yesterday. How paranoid should I feel?
I absolutely love this. I have never and likely never will watch a Mission: Impossible film. I just don't care for action movies. But I do care for beautiful cinematography and these film essays are one of the best, most captivating lessons available. I absolutely adore this and only have two issues. One, the obvious, I WANT MORE. But the subtler issue I've been noticing more and more, as I keep watching these, I'm noticing so many flaws in modern media. The poor fight choreography so heavily reliant on jump cuts with no true talent in the Mandalorian ripping me out of the action that only I seemingly notice while all my friends and family just say it looks cool. The pacing issues that only I feel when watching Hamilton (seriously, though, there's so much build up to the Revolutionary War in the first half of the first act and it's done in like two songs and barely relevant). The more I learn, the more I expect out of the media I consume and it simply does not improve. If anything, I feel as though the general quality has been reducing. Clearly there still are stellar movies like Into the Spiderverse or Soul, but there are just so damn many more that seem to get praised just as much if not more and are just clearly worse. The modern focus on, "The Rule of Cool" hurts, but the modern focus on, "Big names before actual skill" is absolutely debilitating. Sure there are Keanu Reeves/Tom Cruise actors that will put their all into everything, but there are so many that don't do their own stunts. Why, then, do directors conform to that norm, sacrificing quality acting simply to ensure the name is tied? Why do directors have half assed action scenes that have no real build up/climax to cover up actors' shortcomings? Why don't they just get stunt actors and keep damn good fight choreography?! If you couldn't tell, jump cuts in fights piss me off more than anything else... I'd really love to hear a more professional opinion on the matter; maybe a history lesson of why modern editing is so reliant on these seemingly lazy solutions. Maybe a bit of hope as I am unable to see if this trend is continuing or if there is already indications that the format is still shifting towards something else.
Not an industry person, but I'm pretty sure the reason actors mostly don't do their own stunts is because it's a massive financial risk. When Tom Cruise broke his ankle they had to stop production for something like 6 months, which is insanely expensive, and it could have been even worse.
Can you guys stop cutting from 30% of the frame being a letterboxed abyss to eye searing white whenever hulk.jpg appears on the screen? Maybe it could be a yellowish off white? Throw on a paper texture? Make the whole video scope? My eyes hurt but I want to watch your video.
Kinda sad that Tom Cruise has gotten plastic surgery because it messed up his facial expressions and reactions. He used to have the best facial expressions in action movies and hes still good but hes less flexible and expressive. Wish he could have just been a handsome old man instead of a weird perpetual 35 year old.
..... okay, I listening to this and HARD PASS. You should really just dissect Now You See Me part 2 instead, loving this film is okay, but it becomes embarrassingly gushing over something that even most people forget the simple elements when they would like to dumb it down. There's hundreds of heist films that do all of it wrong, and it's better to introduce this into where they did everything wrong.
