Visiting the country of animanga in search of GLand 🙏🙏 No but on a serious note, thank you for doing a video that no doubt displayed a vulnerability not everyone would have been brave enough to show on camera, and spoke on topics many are too afraid to share in fear of getting trolled or hated on. You continue to be a beacon of light in this community, Colleen!!

As an elder millennial who has been reading manga since I was 13 but had taken a decade long hiatus, I was delighted when I found your channel last year. For real, outside of Twitter these types of things can still happen but at least in my experience it's really not as bad. It's just like in any other communities where there's some bad apples but overall it's nice, exception here is all the bad apples gather around on Twitter lol.
I don't use Twitter at all and it's kinda rare I see this kind of behavior (not never but it's pretty rare), but I hear about it constantly from other people and 95% of the time the interaction took place on Twitter.

You're a very valuable voice on UA-cam! It's hard to find someone who talks about non-shounen/seinen. Though I read josei and BL/GL/queer manga more than shoujo, I still enjoy the shoujo videos. They're a breath a fresh air.

I also personally don't read shoujo manga as much as I read the adult variety or as much as I read queer stories but I also always appreciate this different view point. I do read shounen and seinen but that doesn't mean I think anything else is less than. I'm afab myself and there are that many well researched afab voices in this space. I'm also always happy to find new interesting stories I might fall in love with no matter the target age group.

Great analogy. To use it for another point, newcomers to the fandom--to Animanga--almost always visit Shonenville first because it's like New York City. It's not the capital, but it's the most populous place in the country, has so much to see, and so much to see that can be seen easily.

This video is so good and also reminding me why I never feel “welcome” in any of the communities in Animanga. I’m in my 30s, I’m female, and got started with series like Sailor Moon, Kare Kano, Peach Girl, etc. First it was just an issue of availability. Then it was being labeled as a weirdo because anime is clearly inappropriate at all times (please read that with my intended sarcasm). Then it was being accused of being a poser because I’m a woman. Now it’s a mix of gender and age (someone over 30 likes anime? GASP!). And I’m one of the lucky ones because I don’t have issues with people attacking me due to my race, sexuality, or gender identity outside of your run of the mill misogyny. I try to dabble every so often, but quickly leave communities and silently enjoy by myself because the infighting, cliques, and just overall nastiness that can occur is too much for me. Your videos are such a breath of fresh air and you’re just so welcoming to everyone from all walks of life.

I, for one, am happy to have you here on UA-cam Colleen. Your videos are very entertaining, especially the breakdowns of certain series and their characters, regardless if I'm a fan of said series.

Also being a dual citizen of ShoujoTown, hearing you share your thoughts on the community has reflected a lot of my own recently. I'm relieved to hear someone share that its not the perfect "town" as I once first thought it was, though I am thankful to still be there nonetheless. I'm DEEPLY relieved to hear that you don't plan to stop filming and sharing your thoughts on titles/topics you love! As someone who continued using tumblr after the 2018 purge the general consensus on there is that we lost majority of our worst faith players, and users who made the site a cesspool to twitter. Tumblr's been a surprisingly mature (relatively) and calm place since than, but every since Elon's taken over the bird app, and the reddit meltdown I've been seeing a steady uptick in discourse even on that site. It's still worlds better than whatever seems to be the norm on twitter (I mean to disrespect to twitter residents, I just acknowledge that a lot of our crazy's ended up there, and that I want no part of what they're putting out).
I'm really sorry about your experiences online. You're genuinely the most joyful youtuber I watch now because of how much fun you have in your videos. Your skits are charming, your topics heartfelt and while none of that erases the negativity you face or opinions people publicly air about you and other people in the community I hope you know how much your work means to so many of us.

I love seeing real, engaging discussions about series but the fun I get out of reading meaningful conversations over the shows I'm watching is becoming negligible with how much vitriol I have to navigate around. Otherwise keep lurking before writing something the public will see. Basic net etiquette back in 2010, lost somewhere in time.
to make it more clear: If you fit, you fit. but if you want to change an aspect of the community because you dont feel comfortable with that aspect, the door is right there. the guys with 100 dnis in their bio will sure accept you.

This is a really thoughtful video! Despite the fact that I've been in the country of Animanga for over a decade, I often feel like a tourist due to the fact that I primarily enjoy shojosei, BL, and yuri. I don't have any interest in most of the big shonen titles, and I've never felt comfortable with tropes like over-the-top fanservice, so for the longest time, I never really felt like I had a place in the overall fandom. Though I slowly grew more comfortable over time thanks to communities like Anime Feminist, it wasn't until I discovered your tweets and TikToks that I truly felt like I belonged. i feel this so much as a trans woman. pre transition i enjoyed a little bit of everything, bit of seinen, bit of shoujo, bit of josei, bit of shonen. and the guys were usually pretty cool with listening to me talk about what i was watching. however, the moment they saw me as a woman liking seinen made me a "pick me", liking shoujo made me a stereotype and therefore cringe, they didn't even know what a josei was so at least i didn't get shit for that.
it was hard to find women who enjoyed animanga on top of all that. men had made it seem so toxic that the girls that did like it didn't want to talk about it in public, and the girls that didn't know much about it didn't want to give it a go because of the reputation animanga has.

From the days of "you cant call yourself a fan unless youve seen Macross or Akira" to now,
Ive predominately been in the camp of "let people enjoy what they want" because even if there are legitimate points to be made about "casual" viewers vs. "Hobbyist", who likes what more, shoujo vs shounen... it can't be had if the conversation is just to insult each other.
I was born into a low income family, in a time when funimation didn't exist and movie rental stores had maybe like, one small two foot section of what was licensed, so I consumed whatever I could get my hands on. Gender, race, culture, doesnt have much to do with taste as much as ACCESS does.
Edit: I also think we all who anime/manga is a serious hobby go through a period of judging certain types of fans/properties because of burnout. I was told once "you sound like you don't like anything" and I reconsidered how I spoke about certain things, lol. But as long as you evolve from that things stay smooth. Choosing not to get past that is what causes issues in the community.

Honestly...that's not only shoujo or shonen, it's like every fandom for everything ever on the internet. Some are easier to see than others, but there's always the bad side, there's always toxicity. I'm glad to hear you're not leaving youtube because of this! :) there's always fellow dumb nerds to talk about things that we like. I'm so so sorry that you had to go through all of that, nobody deserves it just for trying to talk about the things that they love and are passionate about. I hope you take your well deserved rest and just chill and vibe with life, find joy again. I've been watching your videos consistently since UA-cam recommended it to me a year ago and I have to say that I love them. I love your sense of humor and little sketches, the way you talk and the cadence of your voice. I've been reading a lot more manga bc of you. So I just want to give back some of the positivity that you bring to this community.
Tbh I've also been struggling lately with the amount of hate and negativity on the internet. Its just out of the charts and for no reason at all. Seriously, it's insane. I don't engage in fandoms anymore, only surface level bc of the toxicity and pointless "discussions"/"debates". I just share what i like with my irl friends and that's it. And being out of the internet like that makes things waaay better. So anyways, im sure all of us, that enjoy your videos and the things you bring to this community will still be here when you come back. Lots of love 💕💕

Your deep dives into the history of the genre, your introductions to so many different represantatives of it and all without any reactions, hauls or regular collection update vids really overshadows all the surface level stuff you mostly find (not that I don't like such vids every now and then).

Ever since I found your channel, I’ve felt like you’ve created such a fun and safe space to anyone who resonates more with works focused on the female identifying audience that it’s seriously infuriating that there are people trying to bring you down. I’ve discovered so many great manga and anime because of you! Just this year I’ve read Helter Skelter, watched My Love Story with Yamada-kun, Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, Ōoku: The Inner Chambers AND My Happy Marriage. It’s hard to come by every one of your recommendations in my country, but I trust your judgment so much that if I do, it’s an instant read/watch.

I also started in shonen ville and still am but missed shows like cardcsptors and fruits basket. I was a tomboy growing up so I also stuck my nose up at girl stuff growing up. But that changed greatly and The remake of fruits basket made me realize how much I missed emotional dramas in my anime that just didn’t come with the standard shonen. I’m gonna watch chiyafuru because you keep bringing it up, and am watching Ooku right now.

Even so I never fit in the community because I am a woman and also, from what was told, looked "too normal".
You're the only manga/anime UA-camr I follow, you're the only one I relate to and you're the only one who reads/watches and talks about series and mangas that I too like very much and have never seen anyone else talking about it (especially talking the way you do, so gentle and well spoken).

I won't list the popular shonens here for fear of being doxxed, but seriously though, like whatever you want. Great videos by the way, your recommendations are always great.

You are very courageous to bring up everything there and talk about your feelings. I understand this "i can't find a place where I feel I belong" feeling and... This makes me pretty sad. Personally, I even feel that in my friendship circle, it's like there is no place anywhere to talk about things you love. Then I came to the theory that everybody is driven into animanga by different reasons and that's why communication is difficult. It's hard to talk about the character you love with a person who came watch anime for the music. I'm conscious these sensitivities are difficult to put a finger on but I think it's may be an alternative way to create groups. Or maybe I will be harassed too because I didn't say the exact same things than other character lovers. I don't know, maybe human will continually exclude others ? After all, it's just a youtube commentary...
So, please continue to makes videos, I love your work and I need it to put world on theses feeling I can't express.

Hey Colleen. Just wanted to say I really appreciate your presence in the UA-cam space. I really enjoy anime and manga and love watching video essays of all kinds. There are plenty of video essays on anime and manga but sometimes it gets repetitive. You have been a breath of fresh air. Not just because you talk about shoujo and josei but also because the formats of your videos are refreshing. I might not like all of the same content you like or have the same takes but after I watched you, I started really appreciating the shoujo manga that I read that I always thought was beautiful but for some reason considered a guilty pleasure unlike the shounen I watched. Also seeing your videos, made me realize that, although I was quite used to the cis male dominated anituber space, I was dissatisfied with it. They were filling a void but not quite hitting the spot for my video essay wants. When I watched some of your videos, I thought - this was what I was looking for all along. Anyway, I hope that things get better and youre able to continue doing this work for a long time. It sounds like a terrible environment though, so its understandable if you'd like to move on also.

I appreciate having shojo manga/anime videos to watch! Even though many of my fave series don't come up on the chanel, it is somewhere I learn about series I haven't watched, and I really like discussions on the tropes and history from someone who actual likes shojo! I often feel out of place in anime/manga spaces even though I have been a big fan for 17 years now. There isn't merch for the shows I love, no one I meet is talking about Humanity Has Declined, or Psychic Princess, I don't really learn character names becuase I never say them out loud. For me, it is a solo hoby. That's ok. There is something nice about being out of the loop, about missing all the drama and deciding for myself what the top show of the season is (possibly something that didn't even come out that season, I just decided it was due a watch/rewatch). Yeah, I miss out on some of the fun fan culture, but I don't really need anyone to confirm my theories on Sakura Quest, or point out that 3D is a bit strange. I'm not a tourist, I'm just a recluse who didn't bother to learn her own language.

This was a great video. It perfectly encapsulates how I feel about the animanga fandom and fandom as a while. Before I started engaging with internet fandom I mostly enjoyed manga and anime alone or with a few friends for more popular series. Initially it was great. I was exposed to so many new series and ideas. But I longer I stayed the more the cracks started to show. It’s pretty common that I get to a point in some of these fandoms where instead of being excited I’m just tired.
I really love analyzing and talking about the media I engage with. I even have I journal dedicated to writing down those thing so I don’t talk my friends heads off. I’ve debated over and over again about whether I should post any of those thoughts online but because of how the internet can be I always chicken out. Regardless of how badly I want someone to talk to about it.

I am sorry you are experiencing this Colleen. I hope it doesn't sour your love for Anime and Manga. I was a wee little teenager when I read my first Manga. It was a Zelda Manga. I was still living at home and kinda just bought whatever caught my eye at that time. My dad bought me some Manga whenever we got to the mall. I was also already into videogames at that time. So when we got to the shopping centre near our part of the city, Thalia and Gamestop were my go to stops as a kid. I didn't know what genre or demographics were at the time. As I got older I still had no idea but I developed certain tastes in regards to Manga. My sister watched Yona of the Dawn with me. Twice actually. And I bought here the dvd set for her birthday. But yeah, the harassment and gatekeeping is real. Shonen fans always gatekeep shonen and a lot of them try to keep it a boys only club. They can't control what I buy though. Nobody can control what we buy. It's such a sad tale we can't all just dance together in a circle singing Koombaya in a field of a thousand sunflowers. I can still buy what I want though. The only thing restricting me is my wallet. We can just make our own anime land. I need to buy the Fruits Basket sequel too. I have to hit up my dealer. Remember Colleen, people may be mean, but they can not control your wallet!

Calling someone a "tourist" has got to be the dumbest insult the animanga community has come up with in a hot minute I swear...
This was a really neat approach to not only touch on a lot stuff that has irked me, and I'm sure many others, about certain fandom spaces (I know the majority of my femme peers have at least a couple instances where they didn't feel welcome no matter how new they were to manga or anime). But also to delve into your own experiences with a level of vulnerability I think many content creators wouldn't be brave enough to do. For every piece of "graffiti" on the walls, know so many more of us think you're awesome. Your voice and videos are such a light not only the shojosei community, but the animanga fandom community as a whole.
