This video was great! And I must compliment you (although i don't know your actual age) on your agruements and the points u made and your overall take on the situation was incredibly mature for how old you sound. One point i have to slightly disagree with is the "Cleopatra being blackwashed was good revenge" part, tho i can't imagine how it must feel to have historical figures of your skin colour white washed/race bended, since i never experianced it (except the Cleopatra show ig lol) it is never good to race-bend a historical figures skin colour. It is a false narrative and anti-education to do so, whatever race may be change it is always wrong. Plus it was not the commo peoples decision to change the historical races of those people who were whitewashed, it was the decision of the same producers who are blackwashing Cleopatra today, so you're not "getting back" at anybody. Also tho white-washing and black-washing have different history it doesn't mean one is better than the other, because by using blackwashing on historical and fictional figures today we are making the same bad hisotry of whitewashing repeat itself. (i'm not upset or sad about a thing you said in the video btw 😅, i dont want by any means to sound aggressive in my comment, just maybe something to change your perspective?)
I think reflecting back on what I said, I guess it is still wrong to have black washed her like u said it is anti education, I guess I was just being petty lol and I'm 16 btw (I sound younger than that for some reason ;-;)
@@mipsthemouse Oh sorry! I thought that you may have been 14?? But still looking at the fact that many adults (for example the creator you talked about in the video) tend to act way more petty and aggressive than you, you still were incredibly mature and understanding while making points in your video! So ig this can still be accepted as a compliment?😅
Thanks for this!! I wish more people realize how it is wrong to do it no matter what the reasoning is. The reason it always aggravates me as someone who is biracial(Peruvian and Irish / Eastern European).... it’s because we deserve more than to piggyback off of existing characters. It’s the same thing when the Ariel movie came out. It does nothing for representation, because she’s still white at the parks, the majority of her merchandise is still going to be her white. Same with the Snow White movie. So aggravating. It’s lazy too, because instead of actually giving us new characters, with culturally appropriate storylines.... they force us to piggyback. It’s almost as if they think a character who is BIPOC, can’t survive on their own merit. That they have to twist an already existing IP. So sick of it. They do it all the time. It’s not just anime fan artists, it’s massive companies.
It wouldn’t let me type the rest of my response ? : I just wish more people would realize that we deserve actual representation. Not the crumbs that they give us. Not these revenge black washing attempts I see, like you said with Cleopatra. It’s completely anti-education, and just shows how these producers don’t care. They don’t care about actual representation. They care about appeasing and pandering to the masses. Who may be not critical enough to think deep about it. It’s very frustrating to me, because I’ve literally when I talk about this issue I’m told I’m racist all the time. Which is so frustrating....considering I’ve had to go through racially motivated bs, even if I do present as white. It’s almost like they think I can’t speak for the Peruvian side of me 💀😓
The best way to stick it to the man, it’s always to make your own characters. To do culturally sensitive representation. Also you can support artist, that make their own characters of under represented minorities. 💗😊@@mipsthemouse
The only race swapping art I like to see are fan drawings of cosplays. People of any race should be able to cosplay their fav character and many people do it in just the usual cosplay way or they incorporate their race into the character by creatively incorporating their textured hair etc. I love creative cosplays! They’re so sick!
Definitely, cosplay is about the clothes/costume/uniform/whatever the character wears being recreated irl by someone. Now, if only cosplay communities weren't such cesspools. I should know, I used to be a cosplay photographer. The most toxic part of the MHA fandom? Cosplayers.
Yet they get racism for doing that uet a white person doesn't (except the extreme sjws doing so) but u think cosplay is ok yet somehow race swapping in media is bad when them being white isn't part of the story nor the character but white washing characters is ok?
she basically called us dumb because she got called out 💀 and I also want to point out if theres something, there’s an opposite, whitewashing and blackwashing are just opposites. It doesn’t make one more acceptable.
Exactly! I think both are horrible, not one over the other. I know she said she feels like whitewashing is worse but in my opinion both are just as bad, it’s still changing the race of a character. It’s sad that our world is like this thinking whitewashing and blackwashing are fine when it’s not, both are terrible.
Exactly. There shouldn’t be a double standard. Black wash should be criticized as much as White wash, and White wash with Black wash. Both are equally bad. Period. Maeiixu has a bit of a superiority complex when it comes to those topics lol.
The one thing I never understood about changing a character’s race, is how it’s supposed to give representation in any sort of way. Yeah, the one piece of fanart has darker skin, but the character is still white. It does literally nothing to add representation
The way I kinda understand it is if someone really likes the character and just seeing fanart of their favorite character looking like them makes them really happy. I don’t know if I explained this well, but I know my friends enjoy it😭 Overall I’m still really confused abt everything but if it makes my friends happy and it’s not bothering anyone then idrm.
@@Charm.1ngTbh that’s so real, it may be stupid but if it makes someone happy honestly just ignore the art. Black washing or white washing , it’s easier to just ignore it
@@abjectmadness1111Yeah, cause if people ignored it most likely it would be seen less. But the more views the more likely it’s to show up on other peoples FYP right? Idk. Either way, yes it is still bad but people like this don’t seem to change they just get thrown off the internet.
ill never truly understand her. "the sterotype of the angry black man" she talkes about sterotypes then continues to say "anyone with dark skin is black" like that is okay...shes a painful part of POC art. she even "weakwashed" bakugo by making him more shy and quirky when his part in the story is to be the bully. 💀
@SodaCider641 and then she made momo chubby, even though Ochako exists? And is known for being a bit rounder? She just changes the characters way too much 💀😬
Can someone explain skin colors? I know there are different shades of skin color but people call Americans white and example what are Asians. I was told Asians aren't white. Someone explain pls
i dont like maeriixu due to the fact shes fighting racism with racism which in its self is taking away representation from already established characters in media,i agree whitewashing is bad but going around blackwashing and complaining about critism for the character she blackwashed and saying "its representation" sucks
You say that like “asians” aren’t the majority in literally any anime. Nobody is getting hurt from black deku because literally everyone else in that show is Asian. Miss me with the ignorance
@@tsukitanuki101 That would be the consequentialist view of this moral issue. You can also judge it on principle: race-swapping a character is racist and shouldn't be done. If that's the principle we use to judge this situation, the fact that almost everyone else in the show is Japanese would be irrelevant.
@@quantumvideoscz2052 Anime’s need representation for people of all races. Having 2 black characters in a show, one of which is killed off is so laughable dude. Do you think that’s representation? Seriously? Do you genuinely not understand the history of ‘blackwashing’. Because you sound very uneducated right now. Spewing racism 🤦🏾♀️
Yeah. Deku is quite naturally tan, compared to other characters, but he’s not black. I personally like his design, no matter his skin colour or race! I just think he’s neat
Exactly, i showed my friends that one Maeiixu's short shown in this video and we all went batshit insane while shitting tears😭. For context, we are all south east asians (plus a pacific islander) and we don't condone white washing or black washing. I mean, it's fine to want representation of your race in media (even i wished there was more south east asian representations), but if you want to change races of characters as a headcannon, it's better to create ocs, or even create a whole other story completely.
Yay, Mips uploaded! Anyways, I do not like maeiixu due to how close-minded she is. There’s nothing wrong with her giving Denki freckles and braces or making Momo chubby but if she wanted a blasian or hijabi character, she could have just made MHA OCs. I myself am an Ecuadorian multifandom artist. I do love and value representation but only if the characters are well written. Headcanons are great as long as they’re not forced or harmful. I’m in the Splatoon fandom and the agents do not have a sole canon look because they are player characters. Agent 3, 4, 8 and Neo 3 don’t have canon races since Splatoon offers several skin tone options to the player. Plus, they’re evolved humanoid cephalopods! But on the other hand, some Splatoon fans whitewash Marina (who’s black) and black wash Callie (who is Japanese coded based on the culture of Calamari County where she and her cousin Marie grew up). Pearl of the idol group Off the Hook is clearly white. As of Splatoon 3, there’s more POC characters in the idol group Deep Cut. Shiver is Japanese and Frye is Indian. Big Man is a manta ray, but besides that, Shiver and Frye’s clothing style reflects their culture. Frye has a large forehead since it is a symbol of beauty in Indian culture and wears harem pants. Shiver wears sarashi (Japanese wrappings) and geta (Japanese sandals). Their music even reflects their culture. If you want representation, create original, well written characters.
*Womp womp anyways nobody is gonna draw an unnecessary oc when blackwashing isn't real and giving dark skinned poc rep is NOT the same as whitewashing. Hope this helps! 👍🏿*
Im not a religious person but when she said jesus was originally BLACK, i didnt know how to feel. Although Jesus was most definitely not white or pale, it isn't confirmed that he is black. If we take into account on where jesus was born and his background (aka him being jewish, being born in Bethlehem) the evidence can lead up to the fact jesus' skin tone was dark or olive color to some degree. But to confidently say he was black, nuh uh. (Ps. When I saw Maeiixu's short with the cg5, I made a paragraph on how a person's skin color can define by genetics and environment 2-3 months back)
Jesus was a MIDDLE EASTERN JEW which yes it probably meant he had a more olive tone I’m going to assume by black, the girl meant AFRICAN which Jesus is definitely not I’m tired of people trying to act like middle eastern people don’t exist :(
Also not mad I’m agreeing with you actually- I realize it might of sounded aggressive I’m a Christian so I was just giving you a better understanding 👍
I always assumed Jesus was darker skinned in life but I believe in spirit that he would kinda look like all of us. Since he's the son of God and we're all the children of God so he'd look like all of us depending on who he appears to.
how to "blackwash" or "whitewash" without things going off the rails into racism territory: just draw a good old race swap, you know, like a normal individual would?
Imagining what certain characters would look like if they were a different race: totally okay and pretty creative! Claiming that your version is “superior”: not okay, very gatekeepy.
@@itsdripnovababyright! I’ve always wanted to draw a character in a series of different races to see how they would look/FOR FUN. But I’m afraid to do so because so many people would come after me and call me racist.
A good old race swap? Maybe in a vacuum that makes sense. But we don’t live in a vacuum. We live in a world as a lot of systematic racism. It’s never OK to do it either way.Maybe it’s just because I’m biracial that I see both sides of things, but it’s not OK to ever do that.
@@xdani_thethinkingneko what exactly would be harmful about someone respectfully drawing a character in a different race, with zero bad intentions involved? sure, there's still potential for the results to accidentally turn out racist, but that's always there when any race is being drawn, so should we just do what lego does and only ever draw yellow people without ethnic features?
Idk if this is just me, but when the person roughly said “Black washing is a term coined by white people when black people started to take their representation back” rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t think it’s taking their representation back to make a lighter skinned person black or darker because it wasn’t their representation to begin with. I wish companies would start making more original black characters/ POC characters too, but I don’t like how anyone is going about it. Especially with Disney, I think it’s kinda hollow to make white characters black. It feels more like a cash grab and like studios don’t really care about POC people, they care about the money. Like, why not make a POC character that is totally new and original? Why can’t people be bothered enough to create a new story for POC’s? We should be coming together to make the large studio companies hear us, rather than fighting each other over stuff like this. I want to see new ideas that include POC’s that aren’t just red colored versions of other popular characters.
Yes!!!! We deserve more than to piggyback on an existing IP. Shame to hell when they finally make an original thing w/ someone w/ a darker skin tone, for the first time in a while...it is hollow and falls flat. Wish was terrible.
@@xdani_thethinkingnekoFr like my OC’s from different fandoms and my OC’s are POC and also biracial! Hell I feel very happy making my own OC’s especially fannon ones!
@@quit3118 yeah I feel like that's the best way to go about it! I just think about my characters that I put so much effort into in the novel I'm writing, and I would be heartbroken if somebody tried to change their race. Since the amount of research I have done to it, I chose their race with intention. I wouldn't be surprised if other authors / Mangaka / artists do the exact same thing.
the reason why large companies do that is because 1. easy money having people nostaligic 2, its the new thing that people look forward to in media nowadays like becoming more inclusive to people in every way shape or form. and 3. they ran out of ideas for stories, if its crappy like wish then they wont be able to profit, enchanto was famous why cant they do the same? maybe once a blue moon they get a great idea for a show so for now remaking shows to include poc because its less risky way for money loss basically milking the crap out of what are people demand/want nowadays just a business tactic. point? you wont be able to make the companies hear what people want ...well unless its a worldwide act, an individual wont be able to pull off. business is all about risk, businessmen want a less risky way that gains more money than the cost of the project so they follow trends. its not only shows its the same with games and food restaurants like popeye's chicken sandwich which made every other restaurant do the same- or atleast i have heard.
I like that you brought up nonhuman characters being humanized in fan art. I am in the TMNT fandom and I see a lot of humanization fan art of the turtles as black/blasian. In ROTTMNT, they are half human since they were mutated with Splinter/Hamato Yoshi’s human DNA. On the other hand, Rise April O’Neil is African American. She’s a dark-skinned redhead. To be honest, I have no problem with April being black since her skin color had nothing to do with the story. Mutant Mayhem also had a black April, too but that doesn’t mean white April doesn’t exist anymore. It just means that other versions of April exist. There were mixed reactions to Rise and MM April.
April was originally black in the comics and named after a mixed-race woman that the creator was dating, but she was whitewashed in the 1987 cartoon shows, so now everyone thinks she was originally white now
TMNT FAN SPOTTED 😱😱 And yeah id say the same thing with spiderman, theres literally infinite realities where anything is possible so why wouldn't there be black versions of characters? Like theree literally no harm and it doesn't remove any representation or anything became all the characters exist, its not just changing them?
That makes sense within the cannon though, because there are multi-verses. If there’s a Multiverse trope being used that’s completely different. But that’s not what the majority of these things are.He did the same thing with Monster High, explaining that it was a multi-verse.@@CouldntThinkOfaGoodUsername
Thank you for bringing up the fact that characters that aren’t human being humanized and given a skin colour that may be different to popular belief. I’ve seen people hate on Cookie Run Kingdom artists for drawing literal cookies with different skin colour than their cookie skin. I was waiting for someone to say that you can make a character a different race to popular belief as long as their race isn’t canon to their fandom/game/anime/story
chronically online tiktokers cant believe races that aren't black can have dark skin 😭 they also claimed jesus was black which is objectively false, the oldest painting of him from literally not long after he died depicted him as middle eastern which is what he actually is.
Exactly! Like, has she met a Romani person before!? Nobody, not a single person I have ever met irl would EVER look at a Romani person and think they're black.
@@quantumvideoscz2052 I think my problem with her is her false righteousness. She acts like she’s well studied about race and then does stuff like this. I could maybe give it a pass if it was just a one time mistake but this is a pattern. The Scarlet witch, Mindy’s Velma, and Jesus are all south Asian and she calls them “black” but then says it’s wrong to call Japanese people white because they’re Asian??? She’s 21, just a year or two older than me, but the way she spouts arguments she heard online but doesn’t really understand reminds me of kid. She has all these principles she wants other people to follow but then ignores them herself whenever it’s most convenient. It drives me up the walls. If you want to do a race swap AU then literally just say that! Bby gurl get off the high horse if you don’t even know how to ride.
She only acknowledges the existence of dark-skinned Asians when it helps her excuse blackwashing East Asian characters it seems. The moment she sees a dark-skinned Asian ethnic group she sure as hell is gonna call them black
i technically have no say according to most people (im white), but ive NEVER entirely gotten racebending in general, ESPECIALLY when people decide changing characters to be minorities isnt racist but changing them to not be is. It's hypocritical. Someone's race is part of someone's identity, and helps shape them as a person. I've learned to ignore racebending mostly, but it still bothers me. I feel like this is an amazing take on this. I especially don't mind it if its an AU concept though (still kinda adversed to it though), since according to the multiverse theory anything is possible (I have a higher tolerance since im a fictionkin, so a lot of people can look drastically different in kinmems), but if applied to canon that's when I'm ick about it. The character looks a specific way in canon, IS a specific way in canon. There's some times i've also seen people blackwash characters where their identity + ethnicity was EXTREMELY important to their character. For example, I've seen an afro latino headcanon of James Vela, when him being a native mexican latino is a huge part of his character. (then again this design was made derogatorily by someone who constantly shits on the creators and the story) Though I don't mind if someone VERY slightly darkens/lightens skin, since tanning does exist, and it happens to everyone no matter their skin color. so it makes sense yaknow.
When she said Jesus was black, that caught me so off guard that I had to look it up, he’s actually a more olive color then black or white, which is really cool to learn about (I got this from google)
@@cinnamonbeanbaby444 The Bible specifically doesn’t talk about what Jesus looks like because it doesn’t matter, Jesus would be appalled to learn that people are debating his skin color. It’s the most useless thing in the world.. it’s carnal. Ykwim?
Also, I’d like to say that Black people may be a minority, but so are people who are Asian Probably even more of a minority, considering that the birth rate in Japan, South Korea, and (I think) china are going down very quickly, meaning that there are not a lot of people who are Japanese in there aren’t a lot of people who are Korean nor Chinese So to say that black washing is OK because Black people are minority is just false Solution? Make your own character that’s more unique, more pleasing to look at, and more creative! You can make them that race, and also explain them more thoroughly, because in my opinion, that’s way better of a way expressing representation without simply race washing them 0:19
Exactly, I feel like blackwashing and white washing is straight up disrespectful, especially towards the creator to said characters Like I would rather have an black OC with it's own identity and personality instead of havign to rely on someone elses work
Asians are literally the biggest race on earth what are you talking about, what minority😭 alone china beats a whole Europe population (over 1 billion chinese) and you call them a minority lol
Asians are literally the biggest race on earth what are you on about. Chinese a minority? Please they beat a whole European population they are nowhere near to minority nor other Asians don’t call us that
One thing I have to say tho, birth rates going down in the respective Asian countries doesn’t make them ‘more of a minority’ as they aren’t a minority in their country. Also, decline in birth rates doesn’t mean they’re a scarcity bro, china is still one of the most populated countries. That comment just sounded very ignorant to say there are less and less Asians in the world cuz of lower birth rates. Trust me fam, there’s a lot of us Minority has to do with the social standing of people in the countries they are not from. However I completely agree with ur solution, people should make they own characters, they all have such amazing creativity, use it to make something original and more expressive of your own culture, country, experiences and heritage.
Frrr, she’s got a cute art style, she’s far too ignorant. And frankly, people like her want to STAY ignorant and so confidently incorrect that it’s quite sad…
To be honest, Whitewashing and Blackwashing are just the same thing with different color, no one is worse or less worse since both are taking away representation no matter if is white/black/asian/arabic/latina representation. As a person from Argentina i felt disgusted how many are trying to justify one or another when they both are just the same S-hit, headcannons are good as long as they would be kinda of realistic and canonical but not when it changes something that already shows a part of the character itself, i headcannon Bakugou as deaf and with problems of moving his fingers thanks to his power that make such an impact on his hands when he blows an explosion and that's fine because it would fit in a realistic way.. I also headcannon Todoroki with ice burns and fire burns in both of his body when he use his powers and that's okay, not changing him from asian to arabic/white/black or latino because that's just stupid.. If a character i love that is white and it would change to be a Latina woman with full argentinian blood who doesn't love anyone and is lesbian just because of representation i would feel sad and dissapointed because if i want representation then i want them to give it to me in a perfect way not with just grab one already made and just give it some changes.
I’m in the Splatoon fandom and people blackwash Callie and sometimes Marie from the Squid Sisters. When people whitewash Marina (who’s clearly black) or Frye (who’s a dark skinned Indian), then there’s an angry mob. There were Sanrio plushies of Off The Hook and Marina was whitewashed. Someone who purchased the plushies posted themselves fixing the whitewashed Marina plushie with brown dye. It’s not only artists but toy companies doing whitewashing or black washing.
That’s the main thing that gets me. Honestly my thoughts on the matter boils down to “either both are bad, or both are fine” the double standards are just annoying.
It really confuses me, like sometimes a disney princess is SLIGHTLY whiter, which look, is completely fair to point out, but when THAT is the standard, why are people so fine with completely darkening a whiter character, its such a baffling double standard.
As a person who is called white even though they have black heritage and slavery, I totally agree with Mipsart. Black washing and white washing is caused in the same way but have completely different histories but it doesn't make it right to white wash or black wash. She seems quite arrogant and when people correct her she gets angry which doesn't help. Personally we should stop race swapping and make new stories for characters of colour because right now by black washing we are erasing more history of colour. I think we also need to stop making stereotypes for colour and have a race=one colour. The amount of times I have shown people photo proof that I am a quater black but it being called fake because I have a lighter skin complexion even though I have really dark skin for a ginger is mind boggling.
Fr just make a character with some of the same traits, initiatives and morals..you don’t need to black wash or white wash a character or any other race. I’d even take the amount of spiderman characters who aren’t Peter Parker but have the same morals, reasonings, etc. but are their own characters.
@@honeyedpeaches EXACTLY Like, there exists countless other Marvel & DC characters who are black, Asian, and other ethnicities, but are just getting sidelined for blackwashed versions of more popular characters. Characters like Spawn, Luna Snow, White Wolf, Icon, Misty Knight, and so many others keep getting sidelined for easy raceswaps just for a quick buck.
I’m so glad this was addressed because when I first saw maexxius channel I was confused on why she blackwashed Izuku and knew it wasn’t right, but people would call me racist for it
I think if people do any type of washing a race, it could send a message towards younger people that “it’s bad to be white” or “it’s bad to be Asian” I think people should just try there best to keep the design similar unless there doing to say “This is what a character would look like if they were this race”. I’m so sorry if you have no clue what I’m saying cause neither do I tbh.
I'm Irish and I hate race-swapping because it is saying that the new ethnicity don't deserve more than to ride the coattails of a legacy character. At the same time, it is telling the people who related to the original version of the character that the figure they loved is something that you cannot hold onto because they can be made completely different at the whims of the IP's owner at any time. Either way, it's pretty sickening.
Guys if you want good representation I recommend Aliens (80’s movie)!! Vasquez is a tan woman and she’s so strong she protects the entire group!! She was my fav :3

As someone who was called out for "white washing" a rottmnt character this is a really good video I was around 12 going on 13 making little rottmnt villains as humans because I cannot draw them in their mutant forms. I drew hypno-potamus a lot because he was my favorite, but there would be one comment saying "omg she white washed hypno" or "you are R@cist" as someone who is mixed I was confused because I didn't know about itand upset about the comments. I stopped drawing him after that but then made his design a little canon. And looking back it was stupid because they got after a kid who was still learning art. I make head canons now and some are about gender identity and sexuality.and if a like an antipsychotic character doesn't have a canonical race then people make it up. I'll use Rudy from ice age for example, he is an albino T-Rex so people will assume he's albino, or Pinkie pie from MLP, some people make her black coded and that's fine.
Hypnos got an Australian accent, so your art was an accurate rep of him. This is one of the reasons why I hate parts of the rottmnt and Ninjago fandom, I've seen so many videos of self entitled artists/racists making fun of someone's art if they draw any of the characters white. It's now lead to me seeing so many soulless humanised versions of the characters that all look the same, (seriously look up human donnie and you'll see what I mean) there's no variety anymore because I think people are scared to make them different.
@@dragonsman4733 NINJAGO MENTIONED anyways fr, like c'mon stop it. i have no problem against characters being headcanonned as pocs but i definitely do have a problem if someone calls someone else racist for making a character that has NO CONFIRMED RACE white. like chill. it's like being white is a crime or something. as a Ninjago fan, I hc both Jay and Zane as white bc come on, i see a lotta people making Zane black but it just doesn't make sense to me, cos like, the ice thing and everything. and Jay is just. Jay. i can't imagine him and anything other than white, like i'm sorry.
Honestly I loved the rottmnt fandom, but they’re too extreme with ‘race’ sometimes The greatest content creators in the fandom promote racism and bully anyone that doesn’t share the same vision of the turtles being black-coded, spreading rumours in twitter circles and asking all their fans to harass and block them. Isn’t hamato yoshi canonically Japanese? Doesn’t that automatically make the turtles that were made from his dna, Japanese? Using the idw comics does not prove they’re black, because somewhere else they were confirmed to be Japanese. Blasian isn’t correct either. They’re turtles. And I left the rottmnt fandom because of the toxicity and immaturity of fans. I’m Asian and I’m offended that our media is constantly blackwashed or whitewashed. It really makes it difficult to respect the very same people asking to be respected when they themselves use their power against the oppressed.
I absolutely feel the same! I do agree that there should be WELL DONE representation in the shows we love, but the way Maeiixu is doing it isn’t the way to do it, I also don’t think she’s doing it because of the lack of representation of Black characters in media but because she wants to, she has the “If I can I will” mindset to me, but that could just be me! I don’t hate anybody and I wouldn’t wish hate on anyone; not even on my worst enemy’s! (I don’t even have any enemy’s :’3) She may have some problems around her which makes her act this way and there’s always a reason why people act the way she does; her included, I hope she can learn from her mistakes and be a brighter human! I do also think the head canons she gives the rest of the characters are cute! (Like Kaminari with his freckles and braces, and Bakugo’s hearing issues although it’s kind of sad T-T) Thank you for making a video on this! ^w^ 💖
I feel like people dont understand any kind of "washing" isnt the greatest. Obviously whitewashing is horrible, but blackwashing characters such as deku is not okay either. Sure, blackwashing some white characters can be okay, but even just making your own characters or new characters are better representation. i have made heaps of new ocs recently with different disabilities, different races and bodytypes to represent more and be more realistic. Thanks for making this btw, i wondered what happened to this person (so much art drama to keep up with lol)
She should’ve known this would happen, it’s plain on stupid to do something so oblivious. I believe she did this for a friend, that I believe was black. ( I know my info, as for I’ve checked comments she made.) She may be trying to bring the black community out more, but black washing is not okay.
The thing that kinda confuses me is I thought head cannons are meant to be a feature of who they are as a character. You can head cannon a character as queer, but that doesn’t change their physical appearance. All of her “head cannons” aren’t head cannons, they’re redesigns.
I remember seeing that video on youtube shorts, and went into the comments as per usual to see people being MAD (and some people very justified over *their* representation being taken away). People also made fun of the thigh gap she tried to give her character because it was very anatomically incorrect to the point where it was cringey jaja On a different note, your art is stunning! I love the outfit and shading!!
@@mipsthemouse agreed. Although it was really funny, you may as well just attack the actual issue (blackwashing a POC character) rather than something that just looks a but goofy 😭😭 The comments that blackwashing is just as bad as whitewashing had no nuance, too. She had a point about blackwashing, but she was just doing it to another minority which undermines her point to begin with (revenge to oppressors)
I get that people want more representation for their respective communities but changing another person’s regardless if their fictional or not, it honestly looks more sad that you have to change an existing character than make your own
God FINALLY I've been waiting for someone to make a video on her. So many people have commented and told her what's she's doing wrong and she's blatantly ignore them all and only likes the comments that blindly liked her. She doesn't understand that true representation is putting good writing and design into a seperate character that belongs to you and making them a good rep for your ethnic background. All those MHA OCs she's changed the race of, is taking away their rep, their race that is apart of who they are and how we know them as. That's why so many people (mostly black and asians) have called her out individually and respectfully. She thinks white washing is bad because of what's its had a history of doing, but blackwashing has had a selfish background itself because of how many people take OCs and put them into their own image by forcing their headcannons onto characters and telling people they're the race that they say it is and no one can tell them otherwise. It's not fair to the creators of the said OCs and they shouldn't be race wars in the first place with characters that don't have a specific race(talking about the crk drama here, sorry if it's irrelevant). My point is, both white washing and blackwashing are bad and should not EVER be justified and racism goes both ways no matter fucking what. Apologies for the swearing but I was so tired of her ignorance and how she acts like she's doing a good rep for her people and Japanese people but in reality she's doing the opposite. Thanks again for making this video. 💚💚💚
What you said at the end of the video About not wanting children to blackwash characters hits really hits home. I’m going to be honest and say that when I saw her content of Blackwashing Deku I kinda got inspired to do the same (I’m not Proud of myself for that.) So I’ve blackwashed deku, todoroki, and bakugo because I thought it would be fun to see more people like me in my favorite anime as main/side characters. I did that Until I started to educate myself more on why this was wrong (hence why I appreciatie video’s like this educating others.) And now I’m happy to say that I’ve stopped blackwashing characters I love and instead just added OC’s to the fandom’s I love. So an extra special thank you to you for educating people ❤
Tbh, as an Asian person, when I see ppl make racebending black edits of canon Asian characters it really rubs me the wrong way. It just feels like they're ignoring the fact that we're also underrepresented and have race issues as well
there was also a woman in the ashanti kingdom in west of africa who was willing to fight brittin when the counsel full of men were too scared her name was Yaa Asantewaa
@@mipsthemouse i mean we only hear about her in one chapter and its a pretty short mention, the book is historical fiction and each chapter is about a different person.
I agree! It’s totally not okay, it’s really dumb. Idk why she thinks it’s “empowering” or whatever, she should be ashamed for doing this, how stupid 🙄. Thanks for this amazing video on this topic!
Honestly all this drama with whitewash and blackwash made me remember when people who strictly mad at disney for changing pepa's skin from dark to light and saying its racism, honestly i feel like those people have a steriotype in their head that all latinx people are tanned (which is untrue because i'm pale and latina) and literally the whole latinx community on twitter reunited for a hashtag because of this.
Ah, please don’t use the word “Latinx”! It’s not a real word, and it’s not accepted by the Hispanics and Latino Community. If you want to be gender neutral, just use Latino or Latiné (which _was_ created by nonbinary Hispanic Individuals). I say this as a Latino in the LGBTQ+ community btw I do agree with your point though!
I am a white kid who lives in South Africa, I never look at people & define them by their race, to me, we are all people, we all have shadows. But other people don’t see me the same way… Because I’m white, people see me as a monster it seems. They don’t like me because of the colour of my skin. *If you look at the history of South Africa, people (black, white and mixed) fought and died to bring equality to our country.* NOW PEOPLE ARE FLIPPING TEARING IT DOWN! People feel like they are superior to me because they are black. “Black lives matter.” “I’m a black woman-“ blah, blah, blah. I hear it all the time! What happened to all lives mattering? Since when has race been such a defining feature that sets us all apart? The funny thing is that the media does anything to be appealing, *Take the Battle of Blood River for example:* People think that the Voortrekkers were murderers & plunderers, but in reality, there are historical records that defy this. It is found that after the Voortrekkers prayed, the enemy started running back, (in their culture, cowardice resulted in death) they started killing each other, staining the water red.
I think in general labels "white" and "Black" are weird, like I'm Polish Kasubic and I know it's not the same as French, British. Etc, if it comes to identity, Ethnicity. Etc yet people would possibly put me into "white" group because of Skin color of me and my ancestors despite Cultures being VERY different and despite that Poland being a Slavic Nationality and Country while Britany and France are of Germanic which not only IS VERY DIFFERENT but also would be absurd to put Poland into same group as them despite not having anything uncommon but also Poland was Occupied TWICE by another Germanic Country aka Germany. I think better way to address groups would be instead of the skin color to use Ethnicity especially because if we look at it, we can notice that In actuality Slavic and Finnish people have no to little representation in Big Media or Media that isn't from their country with not all of them being a good rep and most of the time even if it's good then It's Russian character (which I don't hate, but It's a little sad) which leads to me have keen eye towards if character I see is Slavic or not, and I would upset if for example Bronya from Honkai: Star Rail, Honkai Impact 3rd and GGZ would get Black Washed because Bronya is always canonically Russian which means she is a Slavic Character. In Conclusion, we should call characters "Germanic", "Slavic", "Finnish", "African".etc. instead of "White" and "Black" as sometimes people can get bad idea and because some may assume that there is no need to ask for more Slavic and Finnish representation because these Ethnicities are of light skin so they must have a lot of representation. Edit: Forgot to mention that there is little to no Albino people representation, which isn't good because people should become aware of it and how it affects their lives.
Right! she acts acts as if all white people come from the same place? europeans have culture too, and europeans can also be in the minority too. there’s so many european countries people haven’t even heard of edit: having european representation is valid representation too
@@halcyon.x Yeah only good rep I saw Slavic people have currently is the example I gave in comment, Snow White, Lilya and Зима from Reverse: 1999 not to mention only Finnish people rep I saw ever is Seele from Honkai Impact 3rd(+ GGZ and HSR)
@@PolishAzazel jdbdjsbshhsbs i love Seele sm but isnt she from Estonia? the last time I checked her info said her nationality was Estonia, i may be wrong tho
My biggest pet peeve in art is when artists draw a character as another race and claim that they "fixed it" for the sake of representation instead of saying that is just their silly little headcanon, I am a dark-skinned latina, and like the Guatemalan comment said I barely said any representation for latinos in anime but in my case I don't really care, I'm not really here for representation but a good story, if there is representation it is welcome but I acknowledge why other groups want to be seen in media, I grew up in a culture where talking about this is considerd "first world problems" or "rich people problems" as the priorities for us tend to be having enough money to feed yourself and your family or being able to pay your rent in time
Im so glad youre making a video about this! Ive always hated her for this, and was shocked people, ANYONE, defended her. Glad someone is calling her out in an actual video. Her 'headcanons' arent even headcanons anymore, ex: making a character deaf
love you for this video, i also had a paragraph to her shorts about going against her black washing characters that aren’t hers.. but it was a long time ago. nice to know that she actually had a reply to all the arguments. and also nice to hear from you who respectfully went against her ideas of this with backed up facts and so on
This thing happens ALOT in the genshin community. I remember spotting a 'fixed it' post where they: Darkened cyno's skin, candace's skin, and dori's skin to the point theh looked not only off but not even at all appealing to the eye. They also darkened nahida's skin [an archon btw] to the point it looked WWWWAAAYYYY OFF! like... the skin was one thing not looking right with the outfits for the above trio and wouldnt look good in game but nahida is a pale white elf in BRIGHT WHITE AND GREEN! like, its so bright even your phone being dimmed could make it stand out still and they blackwashed her to the point it looked horrendous... Then the person 'fixed' layla.. By taking everything that was great about her aesthetics and then changing them so drastically while slapping a hijab on her she looked like a tired women who has never been given a break by her husbands demands... and the issue with hijabs is how the women in certain places are FORCED to wear these things which is further insulting to the character when the region in game is meant to have freedom! It was even worse because around the time this 'fix' happened a lady was arrested and not seen ever since all because she didnt wear a hijab..... and some even under the dirt.. so yes, to do this feels offensive and hurtful! And these are just a few offensive things about the blackwashing/'fixing' issues and adding religious elements to things that shouldn't exist like this... especially one that literally has gotten women underground because they didnt wear a hijab.. Do I like white washing? No! Sometimes a character is actually better though like nick fury [white in comics, never liked him tbh] i like in the movies instead due to how he portrays the character better. Do i approve of black washing? No! If a character is a certain design and way you can headcanon whatever you want but saying things like 'i fixed it' or 'this is better' like its a fact and running with it as if its a real canon is not helping anyone. We need to stop this nonsense tbh. No more 'washing' on both ends. Sadly.. i know it wont stop... thats the unfortunate part. This is the first video i've seen due to it being recommended but its good to hear someone else who doesn't agree with the nonsense.
I commented on that video, and gave her constructive feedback, but she gave a comment that felt veeery passive aggressive, so i really thank you for this video!
Thank you for making this video! I initially saw the short and didn't think much of it, and watching this and the other video really opened my eyes. When i was younger I had a hc that a character was blasian, and I'm glad I saw these and was able to understand my mistake. Again, many thanks!
Your comment on the live action Little Mermaid is SPOT. ON. Like, we have so many stories that we can use from Africa, or do something like Frog Princess did. Take the old story but make it new. The original fairy tale had no voodoo or old Southern stuff in it, Disney added it in, and I love that movie. I love the Netflix series Trese because it gives us authentic and unique Philippines' mythos and heritage. We need more authentic stories and not just a recolor knock off. Mind you, sometimes they catch lightning in a bottle (see Nick Fury from Marvel Cinema), but that isn't the norm, nor should it be. I don't want "black Ironman who's also a woman." Why not a new superhero who happens to be a black woman??? Who maybe shares a universe with Ironman to start her brand before branching off into her own series, like Miles Morales. Miles is a perfect example of creating more diverse characters! The Spiderverse allows for multiple Spidermans without all being Peter Parker, there's numerous stories already of someone else becoming Spiderman instead or after Peter was. Plus Miles isn't trying to be Peter. Miles is Miles. Granted, not every story has this benefit, and that's where CREATIVITY is required. Now if only the hacks in Hollywood can figure that out...
As someone who likes to draw characters in different races/ethnicity's (including when it comes to actual representation), I still find it horribly wrong when people racewash, rather the character in question is white, black, Asian, etc canonically. Its wrong to blackwash any character regardless if white or Poc in terms. Its just unoriginal and lazy to blackwash, especially offensive, equally as racist, and just as disrespectful to the original creator of characters. There is literally no differences between blackwashing and whitewashing or any form of racewashing its no different. Regardless of its history its all equally the same effect and equally as wrong in terms. Note: Yes, if the original creator doesnt know, doesnt necessarily make it any better much. Even then some creators or multiple creators will still find it disrespectful in regards.
Ngl, I supported the blackwashed Deku lady for a while and then forgot about all of it. This video popping up not only reminded me about it, but also changed my mind. Thank you for that.
THIS!!!!! I was told that me thinking blackwashing is bad was racist, and I made myself believe it!!! Now that I'm older, and I have my own opinion, I am unapologetically against changing a persons race/skin colour.
I think that people can have so many different head cannons of things that aren’t cannon and that straight up contradict canon. Spiderverse. All of the different spider beings are in their own way, head cannons of Spider-Man! And sometimes people use headcannons to relate to them more. I’ve seen someone take kakyoin for jjba and draw them as a trans, Hispanic person, and the artist them selves was trans and Hispanic. But that’s why it’s a head cannon. For them. People will always disagree with you no matter what. I absolutely agree that erasing someone’s culture and rase is wrong. Yet, people have their own perspective, and will continue to. Im trying to say, people see characters their own ways, like an ambiguous ending of a movie. And even if the ending is revealed by the director, people might like their ending, and continue to believe their ending. Some people ship chacters in a homosexual relation ship when they canonically are straight. I think your definition of a head cannon is wrong. A head cannon is how a person views a character, and relate to them. Anyways keep making content and following your dreams.
headcanons are headcanons. I don't mind when someone has a headcannon that xyz character is trans etc. I just don't like the idea of changing the race of a character, and then _considering it okay and justified as reverse racism or smth_ if someone wants to headcanon a character as having certain features or a different skintone, its fine by me. Just the idea of race change feels off.
This made me realize that rhem making the little mermaid black wasn’t to “represent and show support” it was because the executives were LAZY and couldn’t be bothered to come up with a beautiful new idea for Halle who yes WAS a perfect mermaid. I never ever wanted a live action little mermaid, Disney adding fuel to the fire (in which I now suspect was intentional knowing how much people would be upset not doing a 1 to 1 reenactment) instead of originally speaks of why I hate Disney. I wanna hear these queens story’s! Of story’s not just from Europe as we’ve over saturated all of them ngl.
you've taken this very maturely and I'm proud of you for doing that as a young artist, the issue a lot of people have forgotten is that The lack of representation or good representation is an issue that spans across multiple races, not just black people. So when I see this argument only being thrown around between the black and white community i start to think why other communities never get this issue. I think its because we fail to deal with it maturely imo. If we could be more civilised about how we discuss matters like these it would be a lot easier to come to simpler conclusions to these issues, In my opinion the case of fictional and especially stylised characters can be taken loosely with what race you depict them as, so long as the character doesn't have an explicitly stated race that identifies them as a character. I wont assume someone is racist because they do it but it does come off as very weird. But when we're at the point of arguing if knuckles the echidna is black or not then we seriously just gotta stop LOL.
As a tan person, now I have nothing against black or white or any race people! I but i find both white and black washing disgusting, is ok to make a black or brown character, MY OC LOVE INTEREST IS A BROWN MAN! HER CLOSE FRIEND IS A BLACK GIRL, and she is a pale Asian girl, indeed I find black and brown people cute! Same with pale and Asians, but taking a character and do a race swap! Yeah his skin color isn’t his whole character but is part of their identity, their race is part of who they are! Like my character! She is a pale asian girl, her parents are two, they had to move away from her father born land, thanks to his toxic family that wanted to kill his wife and child, her race do matter cause it indicates from were she comes from and her genes! She even has a blasian cousin since her uncle, her dad’s little brother was married to a black woman, is not a big fact, but is part of the identity of the characters, so yeah it is offensive and a bad practice
Both whitewashing is just as bad as blackwashing. Yet maeii still says that one is worse over the other? She says that it's okay to completely blackwash a Japanese character. She is a gigantic hypocrite. She is ignorant and has a high ego. She thinks what she does is right, but she gets hate and questions it?
Yeah, if the poor guy had braces, its not difficult to know how much pain he'd go through in his mouth every time he used his quirk. The only way he would be able to is if they were braces made of specific materials (Sry about this weird rant or whatever it is)
head canons and redesigns are different things. head canons is your personal opinion of a character and how you see them based on little hints that could prove how they see that character, redesigns is just drawing a character to look different. it's ok if someone wants to see how a white person would look as a black person, and vice versa, but it can't be a head canon because there's nothing to support that a canonically white person is black.
Oh wow, I never thought I'd see a video addressing maeiixu! I always loved their art style so it's sad that they continue to blackwash Deku despite criticism. Your art is so pretty btw!
in the past i was actually okay with blackwashing, but now I'm doubting my logic. Although I don't partake in it myself, i do follow a couple of artists who do in fact racebend (specifically jjba). i actually havnet considered how harmful it is, but in my mind i just thought it was a neat little headcanon people did for fun or whatnot, in my mind i normalized people changes races simply for "diversity". in case of blind casting (I was thinking of this actually) i think it's ok for different people of dif races to play characters as long as said culture is not really a big part of the story (for example, asian culture or black culture). but idk. thats on me.
agree a lot w/ you! It's fine for someone of a different race to play characters, unless their culture is a huge part of their character. Take the new pjo cast for example (i'm not the hugest fan of percy or annabeth's casting cause they didn't even bother to get the hair color right, and i haven't watched yet...) diversity is great, but it's prolly better to just headcannon characters as having certain body/facial features or certain disabilities or disorders than just changing their race. There are lots of ways to show diversity. Heck, i didn't mind the headcannon of tsuyu being hijabi, i just disliked the blackwashing!
I feel like changing a character's skin tone, as long as it isn't super drastic, or adds any stereotypes to the character is fine as long as they mantain the original ethnicity of the character. If a character is canonically Thai, but really pale, Imo it's okay to chnage the skin tone a bit as long as A) it's not claiming that the version is superior, and B) it doesn't erase the characters Identity.
There are certain instances where I think race bending is appropriate! Or at least, changing the skin tone. For example, Cahara in fear and hunger is extremely pale, but he was born in the eastern sanctuaries. That also happens to be the same birthplace as Alll-mer, which is this universe’s version of Jesus. A lot of people give him darker skin because of this, but if ppl wanna draw him pale like his sprite then that’s cool too! (He was drawn and designed before his backstory was made I’m pretty sure) Even then, that’s just connecting the dots and making a character look a certain way given context clues. I love people drawing characters more in tact with their origins and hinted culture! But I don’t really understand it when it’s just,,,outta thin air. ESPECIALLY when that character already has another race that’s marginalized but someone makes them black. If it’s for funsies, sure ig but don’t say it’s representation?
Thank you for addressing this, I always used to see people blackwashing and the comments agreeing w/ it on my FYP, and I’m so glad somebody feels the same about this as me 😭 new sub !
The way I've been waiting for this! 1:57 I always have despised any blackwashing/whitewashing, and it feels even worse when most of the art community AGREES/DEFENDS it.
“every group of people deserves to have their own characters in media, not lazy race swaps” BEAUTIFUL way to end the video!! explain the point of why it’s wrong and how it’s not correct representation. an amazing video in whole, as well!! touches all bases and explains in a detailed and clear way. :3
Thank you for speaking up about this topic. Even as a poc, i feel like i couldn’t speak up on this topic of black washing. im asian and i see all this black washing and asian erasure yet they all say its that they are mixed, blasian! one of my friend got mad at me for even mentioning black washing, she said that black washing isnt a thing
As an Asian, I can confirm that not all Asians have pale skin, but that’s because that’s not in our natural genes to be pale, it is still equally disrespectful and quite frankly racist to do this. It’s like saying if I drew a person that was originally white into an East Asian and expecting no backlash from it.
thank you for speaking about this! i'm brown and its kinda tiring to see asian representation always not being taken as seriously. if your paler, your grouped with white people, and if your darker your grouped with black people (eg. like you said the artist thought velma was black). i feel like when people talk about race so many asian cultures are kinda disregarded in the conversation or its just mashed up into one big group even though it is probably one of the most diverse continents there is. of course i mixed people need rep too but can't asian people just exist as full asians no matter how pale or dark we are? especially when the head-canons are based on other physical traits like skin-tone, hair texture, facial features, build or height etc. it's kinda counterproductive because their kinda implying full asians can't have darker skin or curlier hair without having to be mixed which is not true at all.
Rather than replacing pre-existing characters, I would honestly love to see stories based around characters from other parts of the world. I love lore! Give me some stories from black culture! (I will be looking up the ones you mentioned because now I have some place to start, ty)
There’s people who do this to TV shows and movies to and it’s terrible, I mean she could just make a OC with black skin especially since MHA (In English form) does have other people with different skin color too
I have mixed feelings about making characters black because there are other side people who wants to be representative and and when people see black characters who were originally black they say make your own reputation but when someone do make their own reputation then they have a problem with it so I can understand why a lot of people who like wash or black and red character black depends on the person you're talking about but then there are the people who say you are a racist for have to get get someone and who doesn't like black black edit or or just making a character I feel like we can have our own different opinions and be respectful and and there's a other side of the community who do black October who just make the character black to see what they're like they give to her black but there are people on Twitter or who white was character and bitterness see when black people make the characters black they don't most of the time they don't have to sit in their attention and they just want to feel what you said it was to be fair back then stereotype a lot of black people so I can understand well the white people I don't know they're trolls or not white wash charters out of spacet
First off I enjoyed your points and video! Honestly Im making this comment because I know you'll get what Im saying and actually take time to read my points! (And we may have already agreed haha!) When people argue backwashing is not the same as whitewashing: sure there's more history behind it but it doesn't make blackwashing good its just LESS racist but you're still ignoring someone else's representation. also anime most of the time isn't white its ASIAN. this sometimes even occurs with other characters whose skin is white but aren't ethnically white (like cleopatra as the pinned comment mentioned) Above all else blackwashig doesn't just affect white characters. People often will change: Hispanic, East Asians, West Asians, lighter skinned Black people, Native people, etc even though they may be culturally different from a white american. Final thing: When people do it and admit they don't even watch or like the show. Its dumb.
Why do people have to race bend characters in general? Like if you want to have a black character in a show make a black character it's not that difficult:/ great video btw!
I’ve been on the cesspool called Twitter and seen that happen a lot. Two wrongs don’t make a right. I’ve seen this happen in the Splatoon fandom. I’m also in the TMNT fandom and seen that happen in term of humanization fan art of the turtles. People don’t like it when they’re depicted as white but they praise the artist when they’re depicted as black/blasian. I know that the turtles aren’t human to begin with and I do prefer it when artists depict them as black/blasian but I don’t throw a fit if I see them depicted as white or having pale skin. I keep scrolling. Some people base their fan made human designs off their voice actors. In ROTTMNT, Mikey and Raph have black VAs while Donnie and Leo’s VAs are Jewish.
9:38 - THATS WHAT I BEEN SAYING DURING ALL THE TIMES WHEN THE LITTLE MERMAID LIVE ACTION BECOME THE TOPIC IN A CONVERSATION like, in the series of the Little Mermaid, theres is a black mermaid who is also deaf anf have an octopus friend. I would LOVE to see a movie just for her! edit: sorry for the bad english btw
8:40, I’m Egyptian and this point annoyed me a little. If it *was* a show, i wouldn’t give a damn. But it isn’t. It’s a documentary. They’re trying to rewrite our history as they always have, and I assure everyone we would’ve been js as mad if it was any other race playing the role.
Yh I'm sorry if I offended u I realized my wrong there from the pinned comment, but Cleopatra wasn't Egyptian, she was Greek, tho I guess it might be a tiny bit possible her dad had an Egyptian mistress since there r no records who her mum was
I don’t like people changing the physical appearance in a really heavy way, but i despise when changing the skin tones of characters is somehow “empowering” and completely fine only when it’s white to black, like, at least be consistent and say any skin tone change is fine because it’s headcannon, idk, anything, or everything is okay or everything is bad, the same thing can’t be good from one side and wrong from the other
BRO I COULDNT HAVE RELATED TO SOMEONE SO MUCH TOT Especially at 10:21 like I also wanted to say smth like that to my friends but then they would like yell at me for saying my own opinion. I would have liked it better if they just would have made her a new character
“mha needs more representation!!” it’s set in japan. there is going to be japanese characters. i mean, there are two black characters(the anime studio whitewashed them so booo on them) but that’s because the creator chose that. you didn’t choose that- horikoshi did. there’s nothing you can do to change a characters race.
I just wish more people would realize that we deserve actual representation.
I agree! Anyone can cosplay any character even if its outside of their race!
Definitely, cosplay is about the clothes/costume/uniform/whatever the character wears being recreated irl by someone. Now, if only cosplay communities weren't such cesspools. I should know, I used to be a cosplay photographer. The most toxic part of the MHA fandom? Cosplayers.
I agree as well I'm African American and yet I cosplay demon slayer

The one thing I never understood about changing a character’s race, is how it’s supposed to give representation in any sort of way.
Yeah, the one piece of fanart has darker skin, but the character is still white. It does literally nothing to add representation

I know right? She cussed out people in her comments
I'm going to upload again soon! And yh she couldv'e just made mha ocs

If we take into account on where jesus was born and his background (aka him being jewish, being born in Bethlehem) the evidence can lead up to the fact jesus' skin tone was dark or olive color to some degree. But to confidently say he was black, nuh uh.

I want to see new ideas that include POC’s that aren’t just red colored versions of other popular characters.

the reason why large companies do that is because 1. easy money having people nostaligic 2, its the new thing that people look forward to in media nowadays like becoming more inclusive to people in every way shape or form. and 3. they ran out of ideas for stories, if its crappy like wish then they wont be able to profit, enchanto was famous why cant they do the same? maybe once a blue moon they get a great idea for a show so for now remaking shows to include poc because its less risky way for money loss basically milking the crap out of what are people demand/want nowadays just a business tactic. point? you wont be able to make the companies hear what people want ...well unless its a worldwide act, an individual wont be able to pull off. business is all about risk, businessmen want a less risky way that gains more money than the cost of the project so they follow trends. its not only shows its the same with games and food restaurants like popeye's chicken sandwich which made every other restaurant do the same- or atleast i have heard.

(then again this design was made derogatorily by someone who constantly shits on the creators and the story)
Though I don't mind if someone VERY slightly darkens/lightens skin, since tanning does exist, and it happens to everyone no matter their skin color. so it makes sense yaknow.

So to say that black washing is OK because Black people are minority is just false

Trust me fam, there’s a lot of us
Minority has to do with the social standing of people in the countries they are not from.
However I completely agree with ur solution, people should make they own characters, they all have such amazing creativity, use it to make something original and more expressive of your own culture, country, experiences and heritage.
Asians are not a minority especially Chinese stop calling us that

Personally we should stop race swapping and make new stories for characters of colour because right now by black washing we are erasing more history of colour.
@NeonLeon69 Hiiiii!

Honestly I loved the rottmnt fandom, but they’re too extreme with ‘race’ sometimes
The greatest content creators in the fandom promote racism and bully anyone that doesn’t share the same vision of the turtles being black-coded, spreading rumours in twitter circles and asking all their fans to harass and block them.

All of her “head cannons” aren’t head cannons, they’re redesigns.
I remember seeing that video on youtube shorts, and went into the comments as per usual to see people being MAD (and some people very justified over *their* representation being taken away). People also made fun of the thigh gap she tried to give her character because it was very anatomically incorrect to the point where it was cringey jaja
On a different note, your art is stunning! I love the outfit and shading!!
Thx! Also I felt like the comments attacking her art were unnecessary, even if it's unrealistic it's an artstyle
@@mipsthemouse agreed. Although it was really funny, you may as well just attack the actual issue (blackwashing a POC character) rather than something that just looks a but goofy 😭😭
The comments that blackwashing is just as bad as whitewashing had no nuance, too.
It just feels like they're ignoring the fact that we're also underrepresented and have race issues as well
there was also a woman in the ashanti kingdom in west of africa who was willing to fight brittin when the counsel full of men were too scared

Pepa from Encanto?
Why did I think of Pepa Pig
Ah, please don’t use the word “Latinx”! It’s not a real word, and it’s not accepted by the Hispanics and Latino Community. If you want to be gender neutral, just use Latino or Latiné (which _was_ created by nonbinary Hispanic Individuals). I say this as a Latino in the LGBTQ+ community btw
I do agree with your point though!
@@anonymousperidot7446 Pepa is Spanish for pumpkin seed
@@SodaCider641 well I didn’t know that but I meant that I just imagined Pepa Pig instead of Pepa from Encanto for some reason
The fact that Deku’s father isn’t present in his life makes race swapping him to black or blasian feel even more racist 💀
I am a white kid who lives in South Africa, I never look at people & define them by their race, to me, we are all people, we all have shadows.
But other people don’t see me the same way…
Because I’m white, people see me as a monster it seems. They don’t like me because of the colour of my skin.
*If you look at the history of South Africa, people (black, white and mixed) fought and died to bring equality to our country.*
NOW PEOPLE ARE FLIPPING TEARING IT DOWN! People feel like they are superior to me because they are black.
“Black lives matter.” “I’m a black woman-“ blah, blah, blah. I hear it all the time! What happened to all lives mattering? Since when has race been such a defining feature that sets us all apart?
The funny thing is that the media does anything to be appealing,
*Take the Battle of Blood River for example:*
People think that the Voortrekkers were murderers & plunderers, but in reality, there are historical records that defy this.
It is found that after the Voortrekkers prayed, the enemy started running back, (in their culture, cowardice resulted in death) they started killing each other, staining the water red.
Finally someone is talking about this shit 😭🙏
Stuff like race should only be headcanoned if they are not confirmed or heavily implied like Deku being Japanese
Right! she acts acts as if all white people come from the same place? europeans have culture too, and europeans can also be in the minority too. there’s so many european countries people haven’t even heard of
edit: having european representation is valid representation too
@@halcyon.x Yeah only good rep I saw Slavic people have currently is the example I gave in comment, Snow White, Lilya and Зима from Reverse: 1999 not to mention only Finnish people rep I saw ever is Seele from Honkai Impact 3rd(+ GGZ and HSR)

I remember spotting a 'fixed it' post where they:
Darkened cyno's skin, candace's skin, and dori's skin to the point theh looked not only off but not even at all appealing to the eye.
This is great, honestly. You make very valid points and are very mature than most lol. Good on you for apologizing about the Cleopatra thing.
Thank you for making this video! I initially saw the short and didn't think much of it, and watching this and the other video really opened my eyes. When i was younger I had a hc that a character was blasian, and I'm glad I saw these and was able to understand my mistake. Again, many thanks!
I remember this situation VERYYYY well. Good job on this video, and your drawings are amazing!
I hate maeiixu bc of how she think VERYTHING AND EVERONE has something to do with them
Your comment on the live action Little Mermaid is SPOT.
Rock lock is literally such a good character he’s funny and a pro hero and he is one of my favorites
It's okay if you interpret what a headcanon is differently, but the definition I used isn't mine, I got it from google
headcanons are headcanons. I don't mind when someone has a headcannon that xyz character is trans etc. I just don't like the idea of changing the race of a character, and then _considering it okay and justified as reverse racism or smth_
if someone wants to headcanon a character as having certain features or a different skintone, its fine by me.
YOU'RE SO AMAZING!!! Gorgeous art btw!
you've taken this very maturely and I'm proud of you for doing that as a young artist, the issue a lot of people have forgotten is that The lack of representation or good representation is an issue that spans across multiple races, not just black people.
Real and the way she reply’s to comments bringing blackwashing up is crazy like girl calm down
As a tan person, now I have nothing against black or white or any race people!
She thinks what she does is right, but she gets hate and questions it?
people who blackwash anime characters are so annoying😭😭
13:54 okay while I do think Denki with braces is cute, it’s extremely impractical with his quirk. Electricity and Metal wires do NOT mix well at all.
Yeah, if the poor guy had braces, its not difficult to know how much pain he'd go through in his mouth every time he used his quirk. The only way he would be able to is if they were braces made of specific materials
(Sry about this weird rant or whatever it is)
The young man dies right after he tried to use his power 💀
I never truly realized how Head canons are just excuses now to change stuff 😨
Like I didn’t even know what the term head canon truly meant 😭😭
head canons and redesigns are different things. head canons is your personal opinion of a character and how you see them based on little hints that could prove how they see that character, redesigns is just drawing a character to look different. it's ok if someone wants to see how a white person would look as a black person, and vice versa, but it can't be a head canon because there's nothing to support that a canonically white person is black.
@@clouddiee exactly. I don’t see why she claims these are headcanons when they are so clearly not.

Take the new pjo cast for example (i'm not the hugest fan of percy or annabeth's casting cause they didn't even bother to get the hair color right, and i haven't watched yet...)
diversity is great, but it's prolly better to just headcannon characters as having certain body/facial features or certain disabilities or disorders than just changing their race.
(He was drawn and designed before his backstory was made I’m pretty sure)
Even then, that’s just connecting the dots and making a character look a certain way given context clues.
Funger mention.
Thank you for addressing this, I always used to see people blackwashing and the comments agreeing w/ it on my FYP, and I’m so glad somebody feels the same about this as me 😭 new sub !
im so mad cuz maeiixu made tail and wings in wrong place on her drawaing and it makes me insane... btw your video is great!
I noticed that and it drove me insane. Anatomically, it’s so wronggggg
The way I've been waiting for this! 1:57 I always have despised any blackwashing/whitewashing, and it feels even worse when most of the art community AGREES/DEFENDS it.
“every group of people deserves to have their own characters in media, not lazy race swaps”
BEAUTIFUL way to end the video!! explain the point of why it’s wrong and how it’s not correct representation. an amazing video in whole, as well!! touches all bases and explains in a detailed and clear way.
(And we may have already agreed haha!)
When people argue backwashing is not the same as whitewashing: sure there's more history behind it but it doesn't make blackwashing good its just LESS racist but you're still ignoring someone else's representation. also anime most of the time isn't white its ASIAN. this sometimes even occurs with other characters whose skin is white but aren't ethnically white (like cleopatra as the pinned comment mentioned) Above all else blackwashig doesn't just affect white characters. People often will change: Hispanic, East Asians, West Asians, lighter skinned Black people, Native people, etc even though they may be culturally different from a white american. Final thing: When people do it and admit they don't even watch or like the show. Its dumb.
100% agree I talk more Abt that in my part 2 which is coming out soon
Why do people have to race bend characters in general? Like if you want to have a black character in a show make a black character it's not that difficult:/ great video btw!
Off topic but i really love what you drew!! I listened and had something interesting to watch! I love your drawing skils!!
Blackwashing a character, society; we're blind.
Whitewashing a character, society; yes, cancelled that guy, attacks them, bully them!
That not the same thing dumbass
