      Exactly. Legs are important. And the knowledge that they are not better today than they were yesterday. That knowledge could have saved Ineos some work, Arensman some GC time, and possibly the team a stage win if they put someone in the break instead of pulling. Now the team is just that much more tired. 🤔😱🦋👊

    I'm not sure any team really knows what they're doing, Movistar yesterday, DSM and Ineos today. I do think Ineos are trying to keep a number of plates spinning at once, G for the podium, Arensman for the Young Riders White Jersey, and stage wins as well, but that's not excuse. I think sometimes Ineos are on the front just because no one else wants to because when Ben Swift was on the front he wasn't really pulling, but that's not really an excuse either.
    It did make me laugh when DSM pulled back the break, just stopped riding and then I forget who it was in the peleton just remonstrated with them as to what they were doing. Either way you can't just pull Pog all the way to the final climb and it not to end up bad for you which seems to be what is happening on every stage. Hats off to the young German though for taking his chance, I do wonder though how much of that was planning (team planning I mean, beyond get into the break and see what happens) and how much was just a spur of the moment decision and it just worked with UAE not wanting to put too much effort in.
    I like Pog, he's doing an amazing job and deserves to win and get all the plaudits he is getting, but there just isn't enough quality at this race, probably because the Tour isn't that far away, with it being an Olympic year. Even with Pog winning no one else seems to have a clue. G is a bit past it, Martinez doesn't convince me massively, and don't get me started on Bardet, he does this every grand tour. It's the worst Giro in years.

      @ChrisHornerCycling  23 дні тому +3

      That’s a good question. I would third third on GC and white over second. But why not try more to send a rider in the break rather than control the peloton up the last climb. Such a strange race from Ineos today. Lots of work just to have G follow some more and it almost cost Arensman a lot of time. 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️ 👊🏆🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

      @@ChrisHornerCycling I think you're right, but I think some of it isn't really planned and that Ineos just find themselves on the front and are like deer in headlights, hence them looking like there is no plan. I think, if I'm being kind, their plan is just riding as hard as they can fit as many stages as possible and hope that Martinez and/or Tibieri crack maybe on the last mountain/hilly stage, but that's just wishful thinking I think. It was just a bizarre end to today's stage as far as well the GC contenders were concerned (apart from Pog). I'm not sure how much more of this I can watch.

    I totally understand your advice that Tadej conserve energy to go for the Giro-Tour double, but even following that prescription, his chances of winning the Tour are not 100% (of course). And rather than joining a group of seven career riders to achieve that, wouldn't it perhaps be better to try to (1) join the more elite THREE career riders to have stage wins in all three Grand Tours in the same year and perhaps get the most or second-most stage win among the then group of four; and (2) (a) ensure jumping ahead of Roglic in number of Grand Tour stage wins AHEAD of this year's TdF to perhaps gain a psychological advantage; and (2) (b) aim for a career ending in like fifth place, ahead of Hinault, in total number of Grand Tour stage wins? I do agree with you that le Tour is the pinnacle of achievement for those in the European peloton. And Tadej could possibly get a record number of TdF wins (and most Grand Tour wins). I'm just saying that Tadej could (and perhaps should) be pursuing OTHER goals for the record books, and number of stage wins perhaps should be one he goes for--I definitely think that beating Hinault to take fifth in most Grand Tour stage wins--if he started focusing on this now--would be more achievable for Pogacar than beating Hinault in TdF victories. (And this from someone who hates that Tadej makes winning stage wins look so easy...)

    Chris, can you explain what happens in the team bus pre and post-race? Do they review the day’s strategy and performance? What happens if a rider goes off on his own, like Arensman seemingly did? Also, you mentioned yesterday that Tadej P might have been paid to race at the Giro. I am surprised that any rider would need to be paid to appear at such a marquee race. I can kind of understand it for a smaller race, where you try to attract big names. But the Giro? Aren’t riders already paid to ride? Which brings me to contracts for pro riders. If you don’t mind, could you explain how pro cycling contracts work, and for what cyclists are being paid to do? Maybe that’s a better topic for a show between the Giro and Tour. Many thanks, and as always thanks for all of the insights into racing.

    • @ChrisHornerCycling
      @ChrisHornerCycling  23 дні тому +2

      Those are certainly a show topic. But the giro paying topic I will answer here. The giro has a problem with their date of the race (any date may be an issue really) bing that it’s so close to the TdF start, which could tire a rider if they were to do both. The biggest paid riders are supposed to win the TdF. Which means they have to skip the Giro. So the Giro pays the rider and now it’s worth the gamble. 🤔🦋💵👊

    Ineos paced several climbs and descents on this stage. They did this to isolate Danny Martinez from his team because he is well known to be a bad descender and they wanted to put some pain in his legs before the final climb. If you watch back you will see Martinez often lose the wheel by several bike lengths on each corner then sprinting back up. I would say the tactics there were perfect. I terms of the final climb I have no defence whatsoever, The team perfectly set up a G attack only for G not to attack. G says he didn't have the legs to attack but he clearly did, he kept up with Martinez and distanced Arensman so he clearly did have the form to attack. He should have attacked with about 6km left or at latest when Narvaez dropped and try to gain back the 22sec deficit. After the hard work of his team on this stage I think he owes it to them to try an attack but he didn't even try.
    Geraint was my second favourite GC rider in the pro peloton (behind Remco) but no longer. You don't sacrifice the time and effort of your team just to do a finale sprint and maybe gain 2 seconds.

    • @ChrisHornerCycling
      @ChrisHornerCycling  23 дні тому +2

      If G attacked with 6k to go he would have been dropped out of the top three on GC because there was no way he was better then the others 2-6 or 7th in GC. Ineos actually lost time to Steinhausser at the being of the climb and couldn’t get much time back later even with Narvaez and Arensman pulling. If G pulled/attacked at 6k to go I’m sure we would talking about how bad the day went for Ineos and asking for someone to be fired. 😂🦋👊

      @@ChrisHornerCycling Who said that Ineos was trying to chase Steinhausser? You pull him back and all you accomplish is an easy Pog victory. I and the SBS commentators were under the impression they were deliberately letting the time blow out to him. Last year he was clearly the second best in the race. I don't see any evidence that he is doing worse than anyone but Pog and Martinez. G put a significant gap into fourth place today.

    Stages 16 and 17 should have been ideal for climbers out of top-ten GC contention to get in a breakaway and fight for a glorious mountaintop stage win. Pogacar didn't need to go all out and he obviously didn't, but he still finished 1st and 2nd. Maybe the other teams are knuckleheads or maybe the bottom two-thirds of this peloton just isn't good enough.

  • @kevoatway2348
    @kevoatway2348 23 дні тому

    Would the other teams be racing very differently if Pogi wasn't in the Giro? None of them seem strong enough to control the race, and most of the leaders just want to follow until the last few 100m. With the pink on the line would they be more aggressive than they are being for a podium.
    Also without Pogi, the first couple of stages wouldn't have been raced so hard, so Bardet and others may not have lost so much time in those early stages. There would be more riders in contention

    Sorry to say but I didn't see TP's point in going off the front. If he was going to race for the win and he knew his lieutenant didn't have the chops today to go for the stage, why waste the energy? He didn't back off until he realized he wasn't going to close the gap. I agree had he wanted to win he could have but he would have wasted even more bullets by needing to start the climb in the last 5 k not the last 2 or 3. I think he just wanted to beat Eddie the cannibals giro 5 stage win record with 6 stage wins .But that is just speculation

      Hear you but wasnt an attack really though it was tempo he doesnt want to be in group with guys on limit thats when they make mistakes...he wastes energy starting and stopping that creates a lot more lactate and requires more recovery than what he did. Plus whole point of his team maintaining that tempo is its not about stage wins anymore hes trying to get to end of each stage as easy and as efficiently as he can. He tt'd that last climb he was in saddle the whole way except using his weight to get initial gap. Hes different gravy when you can win GT mountain time trials and summit finishes along with raes like liege, flanders, lombardia and compete in MSR. Whole package hes explosive, has tremendous endurance, and is incredibly strong with incredible bike skills.
      This is leanest hes ever been so will e interesting to see him in the heat at tour its been his achilles really only time hes looked vulnerable. Riding more cerebral style using all his team is only weakness. Hinault is best I had ever seen but tadej has always been most talented since Vuelta you could see it. His learning curve is outraeous close to prodigous he rides unicycles etc. Reminds me of watching messi play football you still see kid in him as he beats est in world. Enjoy the last week !

      @@ryanphelan6861 yes I did watch his interview after I commented but he claims his win was more for show and he knew he couldn't win after Gonzales attacked. To me he looked more fatigued then after yesterday's shortened stage. Regardless, as you noted, he is leaner and without doubt demonstrates more fitness than at other grand tours. I still think his major weakness is heat on long climbs. It is interesting that he doesn't wear arm warmers so don't know if that is to stay cooler or what I think one of Eurosport commentators on the motor bike made such an observation.

All I'm saying is that his non-attack attack is interesting . In fact others might have deemed it a knucklehead move since he knew he wasn't going to win and his last 'non attack' was for show) per his post race interview interview).
