What is your favourite bit of tech in this video? Let us know 👇
All, except hookless rims.
Definitely not Trevor's microphone.😁
The hidden new Emonda 🔍
When Alex did the wax chain patrol test, for a second I thought he's going to taste it
How can you not show the coffee machines in the busses?? 😅
pro bikes all with disc brakes, 28mm tires minimum, colorful paints, massive departure from 8 years ago. What a delight to see
Modern pro bikes look pretty special don't they! 👌
EF Education isn't even my favorite team, but damn, their bikes and kits are spectacular! The designers that came up with their graphics did a brilliant job! I'm pretty sure we'll look back in 20 years or so and still think "damn, that was cool".
They always pull it out the bag for the giro 🔥
People thought the Carrera denim look kit was cool at the time.
Holy moly! Someone put in a lot of time on the Wilier paint job, and it's a spare! I am worried about those hookless Cadex rims with bonded carbon fiber spokes, that's like three nopes in a row!
3 NoGo's:
1. Cadex
2. hookless
3. bonded carbon fiber spokes
they are race wheels
Ollie tried to replicate it... maybe he should have put in some more time 😉 👉ua-cam.com/video/JTe7c7tl_e0/v-deo.html
Wilier color is a master piece, crazy how beautiful it is!
Agree
Even better in person 😍
That Wilier is a work of art. What...... *A Stunner* . Eh? Eh? Yeeeeeeah.
yeah, it looks incredible! Did you ever see our video when we went to visit Wilier? ua-cam.com/video/YAsebQ1UdSE/v-deo.htmlsi=pduNRjNgzVomOEYJ
Solid joke!
The wilier from around 2017 or 18 with the copper colour paint job and silver fork was much better. That was a stunner!
Not bad! Hats off.
Alex just seemed so disappointed that the chain wasn't waxed!😂
yep, he went away very sad!
@@gcntech As a wax convert it pains me to say it, but if you're riding all day in the rain, a wet lube is probably better, especially if you have a pro mechanic to clean and re-lube (maybe even back to wax) for the next dry stage.
he had nothing close to wipe his finger
Fantastic video. Loved the kinda behind the scenes tour of the big tour trucks, support and of course the bikes!
EF SuperSix Evo Lab71... beautiful paint and great tech upgrade to an icon in the industry.
...and that Willier paint job too.
We agree! stunning bikes!
Can tell the ef chef is a proper chef because he describes everything as really nice
Thanks! I really love seeing all the new tech
Wow, a Snap-on truck at the Giro, cool. My Dad used to buy tools from the Snap-on man who regularly showed up at the shop in s delivery truck, sort of like the ice-cream man for auto-racing mechanics. 😀
Yeah, you still see the odd Snap-On truck popping into mechanics. Classic isn't it?!
Remember my mate starting his first job as a bus mechanic starting his snap-on collection. Eye watering prices but I bet he’s still using them decades later.
Thank you Alex. It´s a very nice video. My fabourite tech is always cranksets.
Interesting! What is it about cranksets you like so much?
I'm guessing we're not seeing the Visma bikes because that "top secret tech" we can't see is the brand new SRAM Red, which should be unveiled at the Giro (and obviously being Visma there'll be some trick new Red 1x setups)
Few close up shots of the new Red on today’s stage 1
@@pantster9855 Where is it?
@@mrf9893 check GCN news. They have lots of shots of the new groupset
that Wilier!😍
Something else right 🔥
54/40?! I’m using 46/24 on my road bike. The dream has fully dissolved.
RIP 😂
It makes sense with anything 10 or above speed. The larger rings keep the chain straight, keeps tension, and reduces chain wear by reducing chain flexing. Using a 40x34 is more than enough of a bailout gear for a fit rider, and the 54 in the middle of the cassette with a straight chain line gives very good high gears, as well as the 40, if you go down to 40x13 or even 12. I don't know who would ever need 54x11 though, a 12 or 13-34 would actually be the optimal gearing advantage with that crank set up. Thanks to wider gearing, I still use an old school 52x40 with plenty of gears with 10 or 11 speed, even 9 speed which I prefer for chain life.
The ice on Willier. Yes please
Great show on all the tech at the Giro. One piece of tech that I’m interested in is the bike racks that are used on the team car. Excellent work, carry on.
Oooo that is niche! We love it 😉
Love the Jayco paint jobs 👌
It that Cannondale realy the Lab 71 or are they still riding the second tier Hi-Mod with Lab 71 branding? :D
next time we will get Alex to strip it of paint and do a proper inspection!
@@gcntech😂😂😂
Why would world tour teams use lower spec carbon 😂
@@gcntech That's a bit extreme/silly 🤣 - Alex only has to look at the UCI sticker on the downtube...
@@LewisTinsley1sometimes they are stiffer.
Would be interested to see a survey of crank length. Definitely seems to be a trend to short. Pog swapped to 165mm this year.
The frame shape of the willier is very nice.
Sounds like Visma Lease-a-Bike is chock full of the new SRAM Red. 😂 Wonder when it'll all get officially announced.
Love the paint on the Giant TCRs
GREAT tech tour ❤ but bad bus tour give or take limited access or not 👍🏻😁
I’m quite keen on the bike rack in the opening scene. Will you feature more about that please. Looks like the ultimate garage storage I’ve been looking for.
What is up with the Cannondale 4 inch wheel gap between the fork and tire?
Notice how Alex quite rightly did not say they were Lab71 frames 'because they're not'. The team doesn't use Lab71 frames, only labelled as. Cade media have a thumbnail explaing their theory on it.
Gotta save those for the dentists! 😂
My favorite is the Cannondale. And with the Vision wheelset😀
Dream machine for sure 👌
The Giant TCR's look proper boss
New SRAM Red rotor at 6:03, from top secret bike, SRAM red release today ?
They’re new but they’re branded Paceline X 🤨 that should be the midrange that we can find on Rival or Force
@@MaCe19 Yeah I was suprised to see that, but they do look like what has been rumoured to be the new Red, they are on a Pro teams bike, maybe SRAM are just looking to steamline their names, Paceline on the Rival & Force, as it currently is, and maybe the 2 piece Red rotors carry the PaceLine X
Love the new TCR
7:30 supernice
Wow, that was an interesting all-access video. Does the EF bus really have the showers at the opposite side from most other buses?
That African champs bike is REALLY supernice on bell-drop level.
@@savagepro9060 Ah, I think they changed the camera position halfway through and filmed from the back. Pretty hectic.
@@chrisridesbicycles TY, but I got the answer before you answered
Oh my day's, that Wilier ❤
Beautiful paint right!
EF is without a doubt the coolest team in the pro peloton. I wish them lots of luck at the Giro.
My favourite bit of tech is the broom the Jayco AlUla mechanic used to push the truck awning up with to get rid of the huge puddle of water on it. If they'd have dumped it on Alex it would have been a great joke.
haha! That would have been brutal
I run a kogal bottom bracket bearings. On both my Treks.
This shit is so cool to watch. Thank you for this video. Love it.
I'd be really interested in a video about how the team trucks are cars are designed and built/modified.
I am sure that these bikes are the epitome of modern innovation and technology BUT where is the ethos of beauty and function. Personally, I love the handbuilt bikes of yesteryear with beautiful hand-cut lugs, angles to suit the individual rider. Mine was so light in full-race mode just 18 lb built for me by Sammy Ephgrave in London. A joy to ride and a joy to the eye.
Would be interesting to know what the general tyre size seems to be through the teams.
Anyone know what disc pads the teams are using instead of Shimano?
Compared to the UCI DH world cup pits. There is so much innovation/ R&D, prototyping. And those bikes cost half as much with so much more going on. These road tech walk arounds are just paint jobs. Always the way!
Those cool trucks are cool
Waiting on the Giant Tcr team to take the win on those bad ass bikes
12:47 Any idea what brand these alternative pads are?
Could well be Shimano. They also have pads without fins. No special colour here like yellow for Swissstop or orange for Trickstuff. Can make a lot of difference. I had a new set of Swissstop at the front and a new set of Shimano in the back before We Ride Flanders. Shimano was gone after the ride, Swissstop is still in and running.
EF definitely have the hottest kit on the tour.
For sure 👌Although we always have a soft spot for AGU... that Visma kit 🔥
what's going on with the Astana' bike, that saddle tilt is really unusual
Matt used to do great tour buses. Suddenly I remember this.
That Willier has actual gold leaf!
Well seeing as my LBS now has a metal chest delivered with SRAM emblazoned on the lid and a combination lock that they won't get the code to until 15th May I think we can confidently predict SRAM Red is launching next Wednesday
Coolest thing has to be the work trucks followed by catering then bikes
why do they measure distance with time? 50mins? How many kms/miles?
EF Education Easypost has by far the coolest livery in 2024
The paint jobs are next level! Are we to the point where all aero and weight gains have been made so the only thing left is paint design?
There will always be advancements in tech, what next, nobody knows?! or do they 👀
EF and cannondale leaving everyone else in the dust again. yet more epic design idea.
One team we can always rely on to bring the hot tech 🔥
But what is going on with the frames at Team Jayco? A new Giant TCR. But the other framesets are not TCR's? Are they running Propels?
I saw a lot Propels being used by that team at Paris Nice - I think only Plapp was on a TCR, and only for some stages. TBH I think the Propel is seen as really good all-rounder, a little like the Tarmac. Aero and light.
EF best!
Astanas paint jobs are always sweet got to love them.
How long did it take Alex to calm down after this, bet it was like his dream
He's still hyper!
@@JonCannings I can imagine like a child who has had to many haribo 😂
We're trying to calm him now ... he's got a tech show to film 🤣
Are those trucks landlocked in Europe or do the teams transport them to other continents like F1?
Yo mate! What boots are you wearing? Look super sick?
Other than the deathtrap Cadex hookless wheels, very cool to see all the teams kit and bus! Thank you!
Bins full of Vittoria Corsa Speed tubs on the truck! Were we actually supposed to see that segment! Makes one wonder which tires the riders actually prefer. LOL
The carbon wheels with the carbon spokes built into the hub (Cadex)are cool but what if you break a spoke how do you replace it when its bonded to the hub
You don't. You buy a new 900£ hub like a good dentist.
I always understood that teams ran Dura-Ace groupsets with Ultegra cassettes to add weight to help get the bikes to the UCI minimum since bikes are getting so light.
Only 30g I believe between ultegra and dura ace
Is that an unreleased SRAM "Paceline X" 160mm rotor on those Lidl-Trek wheels?
What do you mean lidl wheels?
Şakşuka nice choice also there is a song called şakşuka u can listen on youtube
Hell yeah, oil on a chain. Nice.
How do they tell the motorized bikes from the strictly mechanical ones?
What i heard in a nut shell;
-Embroided seat covers;
-shopping centre doors on the truck;
-a simple id systerm using stickers that was unnecessarily geeksplained
Guessing that's the new Sram Red in the Visma truck then...
huh .. turns out, I like looking at nice bikes. who knew ;)
We knew! We knew! We knew!
I’ll take that Willier paint job. Lush! Ultegra cassette?! Maybe they spent all the cash on the gold leaf 😅
Makes you wonder if the
cooling fins on the Shimano brake pads actually do anything or if it’s just gimmicky.
I'm surprised more manufacturers do not incorporate an integrated seat post like Giant with the TCR
It's literally the most wasteful thing that's why
ISP is SO 2006
Cannondale bike is liiit
Dear Alex and the GCN tech team
I wonder if we can ask Shimano if they’d consider upgrading their hydraulic road shifters in the next iterations/series? I have a few bikes with Shimano Ultegra or DuraAve and bleeding the brakes is always messy and yucky. There’s always some mineral oil that leaks somewhere. I
I have two bikes with SRAM axs and bleeding the brakes is a dream.
It wouldn’t take Shimano much to change their road hydraulic bleed ports to make it much more satisfactory.
Any thoughts from others? Would it be possible to put that question to Shimano?
If you’re going to make a super lightweight number mount why use those SS bolts I saw? A couple of plastic molded screws would be even lighter I would say?
I love the colour ways and visionary colour concepts on the modern team bikes.
Not tech related, however can I please correct the chef at the EF food truck. Shakshouka is NOT Persian, it originates from north Africa and is popular in the Levant, not Iran. (He did say Persia/middle east but there is a huge difference between the two!)
Not really true about Metron 5D - L and XL sizing is in Metron 5D Evo, which is newest handlebar. This from video is old 5D not EVO version and did not have sizing.
The cranks are not aligned, not in biggie smalls, the background is confusing with the colour scheme and who's idea was it to align the rear with a bus hub?
Still a supernice! 🔔
Hahahaha so good it throws the rule book away!
That unreleased trek bike behind him lol. Hopefully the new emonda
Could be - he doesn't specify, but we might see some more coverage in the next few days and as we head into the mountains. Would an Emonda with an IsoFlow make the Madone a bit obsolete?!?!?
@@johnsonmoogjohnson9452 would depend on weight. I was thinking the madone could make the emonda obsolete as it’s recently gone on a diet.
@@johnsonmoogjohnson9452 my guess is that the new emonda will have the bent setpost of isoflow for compliance/comfort but not the cutout of isoflow that we see on the madone, the areo benifit is dubious anyway but the comfort aspect is real
Finally! People are ditching black frames which China Cycling also showed.
You guys flout this new stuff. How well does it hold up over time? Or a bit of Planned Obsolescence at work ?Hope you're well regardless.
The volume has not been adjusted properly Alex is very quiet then the adverts come on much louder,
New Sram Red disc rotor looks 🫶
Mavic has been doing those flat carbon spokes for more than a decade.
Was this recorded on a tiny microphone? 😂
I have a silly question. Do they still use tubular ?
not a silly question! Every question is great! Not many teams are using tubulars these days! Pretty sure Cofidis and Polti-Kometa are the two that spring to mind! cheers
@@gcntech in other words . . . YES! Don't be shy Alex
Can you tell us anything about the new Trek bike?
Is it a real Lab71 this time?
34 on the EF? I dunno, looks a bit small😮
Are EF being forced to used the FSA cranks because nobody sane would choose that over shim
They work great kinds like they’re hollowgram with spidering, is like Spider-Man 2099.
That's disputable with crank failure issues everybody has known for years with hollow tech, now becoming too much to hide. I would push for a Sugino if I were on a team that has to purchase equipment itself over any Shimano crank.
@@danielhall3895 I always found sugino cranksets nice but a bit heavy. Not an issue if you're bashing out flat course alleycats on a fixed gear but maybe not for the mountains.
@@draconianTL Depends on the crank, mighty tour and 75s are definitely heavy cranks. Ox and Air are simillar weight to ultegra or alloy modern campagnolo cranks. Their older road models, especially the ones made for Suntour's top group sets were very light.
Maybe they wanted a power meter that works?
Astana are the cleanest team 😊
A drop on that stem of 12.5mm surely? 😳
How much lighter than Dura Ace is that forbidden stuff from Jumbo? 😅
Unreleased tech on the Visma mechanics truck... new Red being announced soon?!
So Astana puts gold leaf on the frame for bling but then an ultegra cassette? 😂
13:00 #askgcn #askgcntech looks like “K” model of Shimano brake pads…still pretty standard.
