If you're like me, you grew up hearing (over and over again) that women earn 82 cents for every dollar earned by a man. However, it turns out that this is a third-grade statistic coupled with an equally elementary interpretation. When the analysis is appropriately controlled, the pay gap between the sexes shrinks in insignificance. That said, men still continue to earn more than women in both absolute and relative terms. In this episode, I will discuss why this will always be the case.

My problem with that stat is that they came up with it in the early 70's, and have quoted it as gospel for 50 years. You can't tell me that it has held at exactly that without moving either way for 50 years.

I didn't grow up hearing that claim. But I grew up hearing the code that men are valued based on three things: Titles, Women, and Money.
My father only had a bachelor's degree, so I got a master's degree. My wife is a better woman than my mom because our children are better than me at their age. Among the three, only Money that I haven't beat him. Then I can fulfill his wish that I be a better man than him.
In my opinion, sure there is sexual pressure that men have to be the earner. But there is also social pressure from its own gender.

Ask any female business owner or entrepreneur if she pays her female employees the same as her male employees, purely based on gender and she will quickly say no, because being in business she knows it makes economic sense to reward competence, not gender equality, there goes the pay gap debate out the window.

See a trend here?
I work as a consulting engineer in the aircraft industry. ALL of my co-works make the exact same amount of money. No one looks sideways at their co-work if they tick a box of DEI. The largest difference in income is in business owners. Male business owners make SIGNIFICANTLY more than their female counterparts. When you ask a female business owner why she started her own business the most common answer you'll receive is to have more time or more control of her time. When you ask a male the same question the response will almost always be to make more money. Different priorities make a significant difference in outcome. Who knew?

The statistic itself isn't necessarily the issue - it's what they are implying it is and what it means.
The statistic that is oft quoted (i.e. 79c to the $1) is actually an earnings gap - not a pay gap. By calling it a pay gap - they are misconstruing what they actually measured (i.e. lifetime earnings not pay for equivalent work).
They are also misconstruing the underlying reasons the earnings gap exists - making out it's due to gender discrimination - rather than things like the fact that men work longer hours, take more overtime, have a worse work life balance etc.

This fits my experience with my wife. I would add that when married no kids we were both very successful. When we had kids, our attitudes towards life changed. She was less concerned about earning money, career and more focused on my son and “being there for him”. I was immediately more interested in my career to provide for her wants “ to stay at home and raise our child”. Along with a desire to provide a stable future for my newly born son. So effectively, with the birth of a child we both got effectively less selfish.

There was an interesting study of Uber drivers. It was assumed that since people decide for themselves whether or not to work for Uber, and can choose their own hours and which rides to pick up, that gender discrimination in pay would disappear. Oddly enough, female Uber drivers still made about 85% per hour of what male drivers did. Why? They found three main reasons: 1) Men on average drive faster, so they can pick up more rides in the same amount of time. 2) Women worked more part time, meaning the average male driver gained experience faster, which helped them know the best areas for rides, which roads to avoid, etc. 3) Women tend not to work bar areas at night - understandable enough - but that means they miss out on a profitable time period. So, while each decision by female drivers may seem reasonable, together they add up to them earning less per hour.

This annual study is mis-interpretted. It is NOT about salary. It is TOTAL MONEY EARNED. Even those making the calculation do not blame SALARY discrimination. It is because men work HIGHER PAYING JOBS, and work MORE HOURS. The gap comes (primarily) from an over balance of men in Wall Street, high paying CEO positions, and women leaving the workforce to raise children. Also, that gap has gone from 78% to 82% recently, because the study has found more women coming into the CEO positions.
This study was never intended to show hiring preferences. It was designed to show one point in a cultural trend. Leave it to the media to take it out of context, and use it to fuel a gender war.

Let's remember, something you didn't mention. There are plenty, and I mean plenty of very high paying jobs that women just are not interested in: oil rig, underwater welding, cell tower maintenance, electrical grid work, building and maintaining roads bridges, cables: infrastructure, construction work overwhelmingly, most laborious mass production assembly line work, garbage collector, sewer system maintenance, etc. The credible documentation on this is easily found. As well there are industrious, jobs and sectors that are far dominated by women: healthcare, medicine, general administrative, etc.. The common observation here is that women prefer climate controlled, minimally laborious work that generally do not pay as much as the "male," jobs I mentioned earlier. As far as non-compensated domestic family labor goes, the question becomes, "who's paying the bills to support the food clothing and shelter and insurance and car notes? Non-cash labor the provides other benefits does have a value.

"There are plenty, and I mean plenty of very high paying jobs that women just are not interested in" Exactly the point I was hoping someone would make here in the comments section. Heck, those very high paying, physically demanding, dirty, dangerous jobs are avoided by many *men* who would otherwise be physically capable of doing them because they choose ways of making a living that may not pay as much, but are far less demanding. Everyone should be thankful there *are* men out there willing to shoulder the burden of maintaining the infrastructure that makes modern life possible.

I told women I was working 2 jobs and not one said they would ever do that. I told men & they thought it was brilliant.

The fact that they even can doesn't even cross their minds most of the time. Men are more competitive and are willing to fire back and say they want a higher amount in a job position negotiation. Women are more prone to just say, "Okay." A huge part of any "wage gap" that exists starts right here.
