Many folks believe cannabis to be a relatively harmless drug: it's next to impossible to overdose on it, and it doesn't seem to create physiological dependence. It's not a "hard" drug, like some of the other "bad" ones. However, weed is much more dangerous than most people think. Among other things, it tricks people into thinking that they're using their time well, and it keeps people comfortable in situations they have no business being comfortable in. I discuss more in this episode.

Good Morning Orlon, you commented five days ago, and so let me copy and paste it out for you: "This is the best explanation of stonerism I've encountered. You can go out and accomplish something meaningful or you can just smoke and get roughly the same level of satisfaction from doing nothing."
I wonder whether you get high. The doctors problem is that he is talking about what he has no experience of personally. Yes, when a person is high, their base line for euphoria, goes up, but then happiness and delight are still relative, and Stoners know the difference between an terribly boring movie and the best movie of the decade. Okay, if you get high, then see if this makes sense to you, that when you are Normal, your mind is mostly about Doing, Functioning, and that most of what you do is really from some Autopilot. You don't think or reflect on the things around you. It is the Consciousness of the Conscientious Drudge. But the High State of Consciousness is about Perception, Reflecting, Evaluating, all with that heightened base line of Euphoria. People getting high are full of insights that elude the Normal Drudge Consciousness. And, yes, looking at your own High Poetry the morning after and saying "So What!? This is of no use", well, it is to compare Apples and Oranges, to expect the Autopilot Mind to see from the Heart of a Poet.
But, yes, I've noticed myself that most people are lazy, and lazy even when they are normal. The best use one can make of the Heightened Awareness and Mental Reflectivity of being in the High Consciousness, is to be active while high, to practice skills. For instance Black Athletes are always getting into trouble for going to practice Stoned, but they're also the best players, right? That should tell us something. For me, I practice dancing two or three hours a night. Yes, the Euphoria helps keep me going, as it is very strenuous, but what I notice and what I feel are in a high order of awareness. I learn more and I learn it all more deeply.

South Park did an episode about the dangers of smoking weed back in the early 2000's and Randy Marsh (Stan's Father) actually summed it all up in a concise but very effective statement around the end of the episode, and this is what he said:
"Pot makes you feel fine with feeling bored, and it's when you're bored that you should be learning some new skill, or discovering some new science, or being creative. If you smoke pot, you may grow up to find that you aren't good at anything."
Who would've thought that a seemingly low brow animated sitcom would actually dropped down some pearls of wisdom back in the early 2000's? They were ahead of their time IMO!

Same. Though, I've recently bought a box where you can lock it for a set amount of time, and I put the weed in there. That way it only unlocks on the weekends. This helps a lot, but it's not fullproof because sometimes I can still get weed other ways. Still, it raises the minimum potential energy cost to getting high quite a bit, on average.

I can give you mine. Been stoner for around 15 years, progressively worse. The main culprit was the anxiety after smoking and development of auditory hallucinations even while sober (hearing voices of my father), but realising it's all just in my mind. It was kinda easy to quit once I couldn't get high without getting really anxious/paranoid though. Those things(life, career) weren't majorly impacted I guess, but I think the problems would get worse, if I wouldn't stop (so maybe they were). Here's another: I learned in a continuing ed course for my nursing license renewal that daily use of cannabis, (which has been specifically bred for high content of psychoactive chemicals and over the past decades gotten very strong) increases the risk of psychosis by 500%, and the test subjects were screened for no prior evidence of mental illness or mental illness in their families. They were already daily users, of course, the experiment did not give cannabis to people to see what would happen!

When you have a medical use for it, you don't experience the high, it provides clarity, especially if you have chronic pain. If you're getting high, it's recreational and should be treated like any other intoxicant. If it's keeping you off toxic meds & improving your ability to sleep, think, function, don't let anyone bug you about using cannabis.

Some of my most productive years were during my heavier use. I’ve also had periods where it was an escape. But I’ve also had periods of time where I’ve been unproductive, depressed, and lonely while sober. The only real differentiation for me has been my habits. If they are good I’m doing good and if my habits are bad I’ll quickly spiral down. I’ve also noticed a lot of the times when I partake during a lower point in my life it makes me painfully introspective and aware of how poorly I’m doing in my situation. It’ll be to the point where I’d rather be sober because I can better ignore it. But at the end of the day anything that can be used as a crutch has that potential to be used that way by anyone.

In general, I agree with this assessment. However, this is not always the case. Me and my brother started our daily weed consumption when we were 12 and we are now both highly accomplished doctors in medicine and engineering, respectively. Of course this is only anecdotal but I wanted to show the point that it's not necessarily the substance but maybe the personality that leads to an unsatisfying life situation.

i've smoked for 15 years and in the last year or so, i took a 6 month hiatus that ended mid-November, and I stopped again in February but without a definitive timeline. My uncle literally just left my apt smoking (while I'm not). Let's just say that what I would have done with the 2.5 hrs that he was here would have been way different if he hadn't come over. I did nothing productive AND i wasted time waiting for him to show up, but he showed up an hour later than planned... likely due to being high (or lower energy overall due to habitual smoking, as well as his day job). Watching this video was candid timing because it articulated the thoughts I've had increasingly over the last few years about why I want to stop. I'm in my early 30s now, and I have friends doing phenomenal things in life and I know I've sapped that potential but fortunately still have the opportunity. However, i know my window is closing rapidly and I'll have to work extra hard at my age but I can at least still do it... but weed is almost a no-go for me. Unless I get a routine of only doing it AFTER my day's to-do's are over, and even then with my long-term history of smoking, it's a slippery slope where I'd rather only enjoy it say, once a season on a celebratory truly vacation occasion. I think I'm mentally at the point of letting go of smoking weed as a daily/weekly lifestyle. I may smoke once a season, which would be like 4 times a year. That feels like the most that I can do nowadays and still be responsible and on track with the trajectory I aim to achieve in life

I agree. I am from the Bay Area and smoking weed is a tradition 😂 I started smoking weed at the age of 12. Now I am 37 and I having a hard time focusing and getting my life on track. I live in another state now . Being bored and isolated would make you want to smoke lots of weed . I am a very ambitious person . But I start projects and never finish them. When I broke up with my ex my anxiety got worse by smoking weed . Just going thru the break up transition made my situation worse . I had financial problems but all my money was going towards weed and cigarettes. The worse addiction ever. I cry sometimes to stop the recreational abuse. But it’s hard sometimes. I’m currently slowing down. My plan is to award myself when all my hard work
Is done. Also start smoking more cleaner weed. I am just grateful that I am aware that I need to get ahold of my mental health and life.

As a heavy user that has decided to stop I can say there might be some truth to this. However, one thing I don't think non heavy weed users realize is that eventually the weed doesn't affect you like it does the first time and watching paint dry isn't all that exciting anymore. Eventually those intolerable situations just become anxiety inducers and they aren't so tolerable while on weed anymore, the weed doesn't make it better. At least for me I needed to stop weed because it would just put me in those bad moods. Honestly, On weed I was able to work great and would even say I worked better at my job as a software dev because I would have tons more patience, but eventually even that went away and I would find myself unable to focus. One thing that quitting weed has made be realize is that time goes by slower, weeks that would go by in a flash would start to seem infinite, which at first seemed like a bad thing, but after the first 6 months I guess my dopamine started to function correctly again and I started to enjoy things once more. I sleep deeper and have actual dreams that are great. And now It seems like I spend a ton more time enjoying things in life that used to go by in a flash. I am no longer plagued by negative thoughts that I cant not stop and I can breathe better.

Another problem that goes unaddressed is how weed can trigger psychosis. That alone can be a very dangerous mental flip to reverse. If someone thinks they have problems now, psychosis is an even more difficult issue to come out of. It doesn’t take a lot of smoking to prompt this either and it can also activate in long term cannabis smokers.

This is correct! Weed will make shitty situations seem great. My ex roommate years ago had a girlfriend that used to smoke alot. She had a past that scarred her and he was not always the nicest to her. I can tell when she was having bad days by the amount of weed she smoked. Fast forward to today, she smokes more than ever. New boyfriend is worse than ever and she smokes more than ever before. She has a great job and gets paid well. Her daughter is happy and she has a great relationship with her. But she never learned to cope with her past. She still gets verbally and emotionally abused but with a new guy now. Weed just makes it bearable for her, meaning she will never get herself out of that situation or learn to cope.
Life is hard. Life is challenging. But you don't get strong muscles in a day. You don't become the best at your job in a day. You don't become a great speaker instantly. You need to put your nose down and grind your way to success. Some situations are worse than others, but weed is an escape from struggling. As Les Brown said, "If you do what is easy, Life will be hard. However if you do what is hard, life will be easy."

We within family and friends wanted him to quit… all of us being ignorant that you cant just cut off like that… long story short, he quit alcohol, withdrawal symptoms were so bad that he got hospitalized and he died in the hospital. So yeah that alcohol withdrawal being fatal is real.
Secondly about the weed thing that is also so true… i travel between canada and dubai and realized that when i am in CA where weed is legal i smoke everyday and become complacent with my situation and when I am in Dubai where i have no access to drugs i actually start doing things to improve my life.
So yeah consensus with everything you said in this video.

  • @musicalfringe
    @musicalfringe 7 місяців тому +1

Maybe I'm atypical, but it's been my experience that the 'erb actually does push my thinking into genuinely interesting lateral modes that allow me to make long-range intellectual connections between apparently disparate topics. It also often motivates me harder to focus on interesting problems: the number of times I've put down my project for the day, started to unwind, and am almost irresistibly driven back to it...
None of this takes away from its negative effects on perception of time and perspective: it does shift the emphasis of my thinking from the macro to the micro, and thus blinds me a bit to the overall motivational structure I should be working under, and it also blunts my perception of time in a way that can lose me productivity.
Also, in the absence of proper routines and especially sufficient exercise, unmoderated use does tend to drag down motivation and affect one's life negatively, so I'm not saying it's not dangerous either.
My point is that I can categorically refute Orion's point about merely "feeling" more creative. There is a subset of people for whom it unlocks modes of thinking that are much harder to access normally, especially in the creative and intellectual realms. It's so dangerous precisely BECAUSE there's actually something worthwhile to be had from it.

I barely smoked but had nothing wrong with her doing it so much.
Over time I noticed how she could not handle stress at all. Once she had a fight with her mom on the phone which made her ugly cry. Can't remember why only that it shouldn't have made her cry that much. Sat next to her and tried yo comfort her. She forcefully shoved me and got her bong. That was my moment that made me question if there's some underhanded way weed can screw you up.
Tried suggesting she ease it up but never got anywhere. Spelled our the hard truth. Told her that she spends a lot of time studying which for her was just memorization as she never has any unique thoughts about things only textbook facts. The unique thoughts indicates a deeper understanding of the material which she never really had. I'd had taken 500 level courses and they were a completely different beast to anything in undergrad and that if she can't get through undergrad without getting stoned then she has no hope in grad school.
Eventually we broke up and she got into a PhD program. She lasted a year. I was legit pissed. she had done unforgivable crap to make me dump her but our whole relationship was almost like it was centered around her getting into grad school. And immediately she crashed and burned. Wasted my time on a f'ing loser.

Personally I use weed occassionaly as a tool for meditation, bringing trauma to the surface (vulgarly considered a 'bad trip) and enhancing conscious perception. It can be an excellent tool for these, but to this video's point, it is not to be confused for a daily habit or a replacement for showing up in life.

I do cannabis in the form of healthy edibles to avoid smoking, because I had a healthy lifestyle before drugs and accomplished a great deal of success professionally and financially, doing them now actually makes me be more of those good things. When I take an edible I feel more of a desire to be productive and get things done, my training sessions have become more enjoyable and have achieved a better physique as a result. i feel a greater sense of purpose and motivation to achieve my goals. I appreciate all the beauty of nature around me. anywho, I see your point, its true ( i often tell myself, if I had done this in my younger years i would have been in trouble) but I think if you are smart enough and wait long enough and have complete control of your mind it can just be a treat to your life, better than having alcohol or crap sugary food. what do you all think?

Orion's description of the psychological motivations for, and consequences of, long-term self-medication are dead on. Something I said to a friend on this topic is that "it's soothing away your dissatisfaction, and you NEED your dissatisfaction to motivate you to improve things."

I can say from some very painful experiences in my life that pain, in its self, not a teacher but a powerful tool that can motivate ones self to learn or do anything that one needs to do in their life.

It’s good speech inflection, compelling and easy to follow at the same time.

I remember that day, when I quit cold turkey, weed and nicotine. God it was horrible. But I had no choice, my anxiety just wouldn't allow any stimulants whatsoever because of chronic panic attacks. Man and the nic withdrawal coupled with that was pure agony. But I lived, I survived. I haven't had any nicotine for years and weed for almost as long. That was one of the hardest things I've ever done

As an abused child, weed was the hug, love, and acceptance I never received at home. From the first time I smoked it by myself it was my new mother.
Around 25 years of constant use, panic attacks, and munchies that made me fat and lazy.
Once I really gave therapy some time, and worked on reparenting my inner child, the grip of weed loosened, and I was finally able to manage it after trying to quit a thousand times.
Don't beat yourself up if you have a problem. Accept it, and get help, and keep trying.

Certain drugs can be good if used by a healthy person and if treated as medicinal and not dietary.
For example, certain hallucinogenic drugs can change your perspective and lead to personal growth.
Drugs should be used to enhance life or lead to it in some way, not escape. Like any other tool its the way they are used, not they're bad in themselves.

Interesting video. I started using cannabis at an early age. I grew up in inner-city Philadelphia to a mother with cancer and a father that was raging alcoholic. Eventually I quit for a long time. But still managed to list in the army and then use my GI Bill to go to school. Which gave me a great income for the rest of my life. In 2020 I retired and decided that I would start smoking again. I rarely get stoned it just helps. So at night sometimes I will smoke, have some bourbon and chill. I don't have any issues with that and know that I could stop again if I wanted to.
I totally agree that young people should not use any kind of mind and mood altering chemicals such as alcohol tobacco marijuana etc. use that time to get a good education use that time to make money use that time to go to the gym build your body make yourself strong mentally and physically.
There will be times in your life though where something will be needed to help you get through stressful times. Some people use antidepressants, some run and use their body to make endorphins, and some fall into the pit of despair. It's important to know yourself and know where you are going, in what you are looking for out of life. Now in my 60s, I'm looking for peace and serenity. And that's pretty much what I have and I'm okay with using cannabis to help me achieve that.

As someone who smoked a lot of weed in the past it is good if you are trying to sleep or have a long, tedious, repetitive non-thinking work task ahead of you like cleaning the garage or mowing 5 acres of grass. TBH that is about it.

Dr Orion, what do you think about cigars? Some people say it's like meditating. I've never tried them and is not going to, but was thinking to bring them to my homecountry as a gift for the men I know. Now I doubt if it's a good idea.

Many young people think it is cool to experience things, that others usualy do. This was something I could never understand, the feeling that I might miss something, if I don't try it. I didn't even hold a cigarette in my hand, ever in my life. I thought: Why should I hold a stinky harmful thing in my hand, and even put it into my mouth. No way! Drugs? Why should I do illegal and harmful things? But my friends liked me this way too, and I never judged them, just didn't join. Yes, I was drunk, 3 times in my life, I regret all of them, and I also don't drink, I am 48.
Living life respectfuly is your choice, don't make low choices, it harms your character. Be one, you can respect.
