I lived in a 100 year old house 1915ish, ballon framed, no insulation, rubble stone foundation, house was the best place I’ve ever lived in 😊. Oh yeah let’s not forget about some knob and tube electrical that was still in service 😂.

Bad idea connecting a french drain to the septic system, excess water can affect the flow of solids which may force the solids through the tank and into the leaching field this can lead to a biomat that can destroy the leaching field. Sewer gasses may back up into your living area. Also fyi, be aware that septic drain requires a specific pipe slope to mainain constant movement of the solids. Does your town have a health code and inspection for the septic system? Best wishes for the completion of your project.
Up here in Ottawa, ON, Canada, we built a 'Quonset hut' for a shelter to work on a 40' wooden boat during the window. It was a cheap thing to build, using 3/4" x 3" strapping and 3" long blocks of 2" x 4"s. On a flat area of the farmyard. Place pegs at the contour for the roof/walls. Place a second set of pegs inside of the previous ones, to form a slightly smaller contour. Next, place lengths of strapping to cover the full length of the contour, inside the pegs. Put a second set inside of those, using 2" x 4" blocks to separate the two. Space the blocks no more than 2' apart. Build enough of these 'arches' to cover the length of Quonset you require, spacing them no further than 4' apart, center-to-center. Next, you brace the first arch upright and then fasten a few lengths of strapping (bracing) perpendicular to the arch, outside each block. Do this at the base of both ends of the first arch. Slide in the next arch and fasten it to the bracing as in the first, ... and so on. Cover the outside of the Quonset Hut with 6 mil plastic. If using a staple gun, place plastic or rubber (from bicycle tires?) washers between the staple and the plastic. You can attach a second layer of 6 mil inside of the strapping for a little more heat retention. Frame the ends with 2" x 4"s and cover with 6 mil, as before. Don't forget a door. Such a building, heated with an industrial heater, would keep your underground theatre warm enough to work in. When the forecast calls for a few milder days, that's when you pour the remainder of the foundation. You will have to cut a few access points through the 6 mil to pour, but can easily cover those up afterwards. Tuck tape would be perfect for the edges of your staples patches. You may choose to add a second heater while the concrete cures, unless you've put heating cable inside the concrete. I spoke about this method in yesterday's comments. Good luck with your build!
As a retired boot maker, if those boots really are handmade to your measurements the maker should have fitted the last to your measurements if they did it right both boots should fit your feet without a lot of “break in” sorry they don’t fit very good
You don't really want to soften up boots like this too much. It can decreases their lifespan, and they are NOT cheap to replace. You kind of just have to let nature take its course and let it mold itself to your foot over time. If anybody reading this wears Birkenstocks, you understand. Boots are a lot harder on your foot as they break in though.
Roman is tired and it shows. Stop with the outside work and move inside for the Winter! You could heat the inside by burning those boots and your concrete forms in a woodburner. You both are doing great work, by the way!
After we stopped milking cows in 1975, my Dad built an insulated enclosure around the well pump, located in the old milkhouse. Then he hung a light bulb in there. That kept it warm enough for all of our Wisconsin winters. We just had to check the light bulb periodically.
@@OOpSjm If it is well insulated you can use a 60 to 100 watt light bulb and it will keep it from freezing. People will take old refrigerator but a light in them and use them to store paint in the winter.
@@OOpSjm A light bulb is enough, I kept my water pump from freezing when building my house by making a plywood tent and putting insulation all over that upside down V. Stayed about 45 degrees, of course it was out of the wind inside. I think it was a 60 watt bulb.
Interesting that you choose to do the movie theatre at this point, and not finish the internal of the house first, as the movie theatre is more of an add on separate to the rest of the house it could have been blocked off for construction, and finished later when you were living in your new finished rest of the house,
That's what I would do also. But my name isn't Cole. And it's his house and his project. Getting rid of the chimneys doesn't seem such a good idea now, because there are tuns of firewood left. Heating would be easy.

I’m sure he is. They spent so many months in the basement bc things kept changing so they had to work backwards. Much harder after their access to the basement was gone. I lost count of how many times poor Roman was stuck digging more dirt out of this hole. If nothing else it has enough drain tile & stone to keep it from becoming a swimming pool until Spring.

I’m so glad I’m from a Subtropical climate. Often we have to turn on the AC on Christmas Day because it is so warm in December. My tropical plants don’t usually die in the winter so my banana plants produce plenty of edible bananas and they are the same variety that Dole grows commercially. Would not enjoy living in northern states with winter weather. Looking forward seeing the formwork and concrete poured so the new wing can be constructed during the winter months. 😎
Lunch ideas: during the winter anything in your crockpot for a hot lunch can be your friend - roasts, soup, chili, pulled pork, stew, chicken, etc. Start on low at bedtime and cook until lunch. I'm sure your mom and mom in law have recipes they can share with you. UA-cam has ton as of healthy recipes that don't rely on canned creamed soups, salt, sugar, or msg.
Put your favorite pork steaks in a crock pot and add a packet or two of Chi Chi's taco seasoning and cook it on high from early in the morning, when its cooked fully shred it up with a couple of forks. A package of tortillas , and a bottle of taco sauce and you'll have a lovely lunch, plain Greek yogurt or sour cream makes it even better. I heat my 14x70 trailer house with three space heaters all winter
If I were you I'd board up that giant hole in the basement and work on the interior of the house all winter. Maybe start by finishing off the spray foam, they could probably spray the board up job on the basement wall too. It'll cost some money to heat it, but with the insulation done it shouldn't be much more expensive to heat than the finished house.
build a box around the supply valve put a light inside the box cover all expose pipe with 24" of soil and blanket again place a light in the general area. Close the blow hole in the basement.
How about some beef stew with lots of potatoes, carrots etc etc... plus grilled cheese sandwiches so have a grilling plate on hand to make your sandwiches. So. If you like this
Put in a temporary wall and door across the basement and get some heating back into the house (maybe the old furnace again?) . Can you get the missing spray foam done soonish too? Then when its really cold you'll be ready and able to work comfortably on the inside part of the house during winter.
If you're just trying to keep the water stub coming out from the ground from freezing, put a cooler over it upside down with an incandescent light bulb in it. If you can find one. If you don't have an incandescent light bulb, get a ceramic 75 w heat lamp.
Are you going to leave all that termite food on the footings? If we left that in our builds, the house word be swarming with the little beggars in short time.
How is Iowa for termites? In my area in northern mn, we don’t even need to give them a second thought. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a single termite case in the state. Cole may not need to worry about it, but I don’t know Iowa at all.

You bought hand made boots, not custom boots. Big difference too. Im sure those are nice boots and should last a while but an actual custom made boot should not hurt your feet or take 100 hours to get broken in. If your left foot is taller across the top, the boot should have been made to allow for that.

Why not block off the opening in the basement to the outside? It will allow you to heat up the inside a little since everything is insulated. In fact, you could block off the upstairs with plastic and the first floor would be easy to heat.

Get a crockpot and throw a bunch of stuff in it every morning on high, by lunch you’ll have a warm stew/soup. Beef, chicken whatever chopped up into 1 or 2 lbs. throw whatever veggies and broth or cream canned soup into it

Perhaps making your break room the same room that the waterline is in? It is not as nice of a view but if you tarp it off or put up some temporary walls around it, you could heat both the waterline and yourselves. Looking good and my goodness, you boys work your butts off!
You should probably try to figure out how to temporarily block up the big hole in the basement wall, then, you could probably get back to working on some of the parts of the current house.
Cole when I was in the Army we would wear our new boots in the shower get them soaked and wear until they were dry they would mold to your foot and when broke in wore like gloves
if the basement is going to be unheated the dirt under the footings may freeze and that may cause ground to expand (frost heave) which may not be good for existing walls.

I have a feeling there may be an architect, engineer or someone in the shadows we know nothing about who has created the plans for this project. There has to some explanation for this massive footing besides him just wanting to make it strong.
@trrexxx my family is in the general contractor business. We do commercial and residential builds. I assure you, there is no engineer in the background, that designed that footer. Thats all on him

And while I agree you are probably right, about this being his alone, this footing defies logic for any standard residential building. Even if part of the thinking was to make a safe and secure place against a tornado, this over engineered footing makes little or no difference in increasing safety over pouring a regular footing. I guess we won't know until spring as this part of the project shuts down. Hopefully having the footings open to the winter won't cause damage by severe ground frost.
@trrexxx you're 100% right. My guess is frost will play a role at some point. Especially if there is a lot of rain before the freeze up. Either way, come spring, it will be cracked

For those saying that the house should have been done first. The movie theatre is the basement of a new extension that will tie into the old house at the ground and first floor levels. I have heard a tip for new boots. It was to wet down the upper (all leather above the soul) and then put them on and wear them all day. It is a soggy day, but it loosens them up and it is able to bend and stretch where you need it and when they dry, they hold the shape. Just what I've heard. Anyone else heard this or tried it?
You can cover the water line with insulated blankets or we used to put a special attachment on the valve and use air pressure to blow back the water below ground

Hey Cole- if you have a shoe repair place near you, you can go in and they can stretch that area that pinches your big and little toes…or any area of your new boots that are rubbing. They are a great help. You also might want to switch boots after a half day. Great looking boots.
I’d seal that opening in the basement with some ply sheet to stop the draft and get an oil radiator to heat where you’re sitting, super efficient just need to turn it on like 30mins to an hour before you go to have lunch.
4 pork steaks cut into bite size chunks, salt and pepper, lightly flour mix and to hot fry pan they don’t need to be completely cooked. Just a little brown. Place in slow cooker/crockpot add 2 can of original Rotel stir occasionally. On high for 2 hour. Eat with tortillas or over rice. Cheese is always nice. Be creative.

Hopefully you see this. The normal household frost free refrigerators can stop working when it gets too cold. Including the freezer part. Then meat can start to melt. I had it happen to me years ago. Where a turned the heat down. Because I was gone. Heat was set above freezing. But not enough above freezing. To keep the refrigerator working. The non frost free chest freezers do not have that issue. So they can be used when it is cold.

If I were you I'd board up that giant hole in the basement and work on the interior of the house all winter. Maybe start by finishing off the spray foam, they could probably spray the board up job on the basement wall too. It'll cost some money to heat it, but with the insulation done it shouldn't be much more expensive to heat than the finished house.

Put in a temporary wall and door across the basement and get some heating back into the house (maybe the old furnace again?) . Can you get the missing spray foam done soonish too? Then when its really cold you'll be ready and able to work comfortably on the inside part of the house during winter.

If you're just trying to keep the water stub coming out from the ground from freezing, put a cooler over it upside down with an incandescent light bulb in it. If you can find one. If you don't have an incandescent light bulb, get a ceramic 75 w heat lamp.

Im sure those are nice boots and should last a while but an actual custom made boot should not hurt your feet or take 100 hours to get broken in. If your left foot is taller across the top, the boot should have been made to allow for that.

Perhaps making your break room the same room that the waterline is in? It is not as nice of a view but if you tarp it off or put up some temporary walls around it, you could heat both the waterline and yourselves. Looking good and my goodness, you boys work your butts off!

if the basement is going to be unheated the dirt under the footings may freeze and that may cause ground to expand (frost heave) which may not be good for existing walls.

I have a feeling there may be an architect, engineer or someone in the shadows we know nothing about who has created the plans for this project. There has to some explanation for this massive footing besides him just wanting to make it strong.
@trrexxx my family is in the general contractor business. We do commercial and residential builds. I assure you, there is no engineer in the background, that designed that footer. Thats all on him

And while I agree you are probably right, about this being his alone, this footing defies logic for any standard residential building. Even if part of the thinking was to make a safe and secure place against a tornado, this over engineered footing makes little or no difference in increasing safety over pouring a regular footing. I guess we won't know until spring as this part of the project shuts down. Hopefully having the footings open to the winter won't cause damage by severe ground frost.

I have heard a tip for new boots. It was to wet down the upper (all leather above the soul) and then put them on and wear them all day. It is a soggy day, but it loosens them up and it is able to bend and stretch where you need it and when they dry, they hold the shape. Just what I've heard. Anyone else heard this or tried it?

Can confirm. These are easily 2-3 times the size they need to be. It’s excessive. These would support a 5 story building without a problem.
My thought is that the "underground movie theater" is being built to serve as a bunker as well, hence the overkill on footings, rebar etc.

You might want to look into renting a glycol ground heater that hooks glycol hoses up to a portable heating source to thaw the ground or heat it.

Cole should really watch the latest Bealey-Good video. He is using Nudura ICF's and the owner of Nedura is there helping. You can get a feel for the complexity of what can be done with ICF's. Geoff BG is also building a mansion with an underground movie theatre and a lot of square footage, 4000? He also built a swimming pool.
I was going to suggest Bealy Good's channel to him as well for an ICF build. It goes fast and then the walls have insulation inside as well.
The opposite method is a poured walls or cast-in-place foundation similar to what Texas Filipino is doing right now also
Hey Cole- if you have a shoe repair place near you, you can go in and they can stretch that area that pinches your big and little toes…or any area of your new boots that are rubbing. They are a great help. You also might want to switch boots after a half day. Great looking boots.

I’d seal that opening in the basement with some ply sheet to stop the draft and get an oil radiator to heat where you’re sitting, super efficient just need to turn it on like 30mins to an hour before you go to have lunch.

Hopefully you see this. The normal household frost free refrigerators can stop working when it gets too cold. Including the freezer part. Then meat can start to melt. I had it happen to me years ago. Where a turned the heat down. Because I was gone. Heat was set above freezing. But not enough above freezing. To keep the refrigerator working. The non frost free chest freezers do not have that issue. So they can be used when it is cold.
