- You may have seen Adam wearing a hip pack (or fanny pack) in recent build videos, and Adam shares why he carries it and exactly what's contained within. It's a custom pack made by Tom Sachs (based off of a Zpacks utility pack) and holds some of the things Adam would normally carry in his jacket. From fountain pens to a small work light, it's an extra bit of everyday carry for the shop!

I miss Mythbusters, yes.
But after discovering this channel, I found out how much I just really enjoy hearing Adam ramble. His thought process. His vernacular. It's all here.
And so am I 👌
I wish Jamie had something similar. I watch Tested pretty much just for Adam
Except when he decides to make politically charged comments (which he used to do in the Tested podcast, uncertain if he does it here in his UA-cam channel or if he is more focused on the process) made me stop being a fan of his.
@@rosephjosenbaum7130 Adam does too. Just happens to align with yours more probably so you didn't notice as much ;p
Yeah i miss the Mythbusters too. But i sill love to rewatch the episodes. One of my all-time favorites is still "Duct Tape Island"
@rosephjosenbaum7130 I don't agree with the "we are screwing up the world" comment either as "global warming" is a trend that has happened before, is happening now, and will happen again. Mother nature releases more CO2 and other noxious gases with one volcanic eruption than most countries could in a year. Most liberals and people from "hollywood" do their song and dance about the other side but look at San Francisco now. Full of homeless, tent cities, empty store fronts, and steady and rising crime rates.

I’m so glad you said this.
As an artist who primarily uses fountain pens and has almost 30 of them by now it excites me to no end to see Adam with a Lamy

What about mechanical pencils? About 5 years ago I abandoned the plastic crap ones and now rely on my single Pentel GraphGear 1000. I lose it or break it every year or so and just buy another.
@@chris-hayes well of course I have a nice metal mechanical pencil but I hardly use it for the kinda art I make

As a "fanny pack" user myself I was delighted to see this video today! "Why two flashlights?" I also carey two flashlights! They come in hand so much more than people who do not carry a flashlight could ever understand.
I carry one in a cargo pocket and have one on my keychain. Why? because batteries run out and ALWAYS when you need the light the most.
I've been wearing a hip pouch for years now and I totally agree with Adam about the "Everything is just there." aspect of them. I found one that I really liked when I started wearing them, but then it was discontinued. So I hired someone to make a pattern for me and train me how to sew my own with the pattern. My pattern uses a more vertical form-factor with two zippered compartments.
Also, I would like to introduce the best kind of buckle for a hip pouch I have ever found: www.amazon.com/PARACORD-PLANET-Rotational-Paracord-Backpacks/dp/B07BHR9YYQ I have yet to have one break on me, less gets caught in them and I think the flex helps reduce wear.
I'm still looking for a source of double zippers that open in the middle though.
You're right but you need to move to rechargeable
I see Adam has earned two "paint your fingernail black with a hammer" demerit badges.

Smashing a finger with a hammer is bad. But there’s a worse option and that’s smashing your finger with a hammer when it’s extremely cold.

Never underestimate a man with a fanny pack, you never know what he's got hiding in there. Those nebo penlight are pretty awesome for the price I manage to use mine every day
Were those standard Bic mechanical pencils? Feels like Adam would have a particular favorite.
Its seems like everything that makes it easy for a male to carry everyday stuff is constantly being made a fashion faux pas. Fanny packs, man purses, messenger bags, even cargo pants and short are made fun of. I just want to carry my handful of items without having to use pants pockets or transferring it from one outfit to the other. Im old enough now to not give a crap but would like more utilitarian options like Adams bag.
Ah, the video where ultralight backpacking tech and the maker space combine! Finally 🤩
I really like my Lamy pen. I ended up switching to an extra fine nib; combined with the larger girth of the pen and the less pressure that I can exert with the nib while writing helps to keep my forearm and hand from cramping up while writing.
As a Texan, I’m glad y’all are getting a taste of the weird weather. Our “winter” in most of the state just consists of all 4 seasons in one day, about half the week. So it’s cold in the morning, you’re in shorts and a short sleeve by lunch, then maybe it rains, then it’s back to cold around 7PM or so. Good times.
You want weird weather? I'm in Northern Minnesota and have no snow in Dec. The East Coast has more snow right now than I've seen all winter.
you want weird weather? come to alberta off the rockies. We will regularly get temp swings of 70-100F during the winter from the chinooks. Just yesterday it was 53F and sunny and now today we're going to 6F with a foot of snow
"it's cold today? It's getting ready to rain"
"I am glad about global warming because it makes you feel unformfortable"
"Doggy poop bag because you don't want to be out without one"
Yea I heard SF has that problem XD
+1 on the Lamy Safari fountain pen. I've had one of those for a few years now and it's awesome.
Thanks for the video Adam. I totally get the hip pouch idea.
In the summer Montana can be quite variable in temps. We generally wear a fleece for warmth and breathability and then put on a light windbreaker for wind and rain resistance. Also help later at night to lock in the heat retained by the fleece. Because of the fact that I may be wearing several jackets in a day I generally wear cargo pants. My wife has described me as a Santa looking version of Pockets from "Hatari!" when I pull random things out of my pockets but not too much because I am generally pulling them out for her to use.
I agree with the noise abatement issue with the pull ring. I have a pair of cargos with metal zippers on the leg pockets and if I have the unzipped while walking around the pulls will chime with every step.
One improvement to the bag that I noticed would be something to hold the excess belt ends so they aren't dangling around to catch in something. Otherwise that bag looks very functional.
The Fountain Pen aficionados are all saying “Law-mee!” right now. And then geeking out on how we can help with your new hobby.
Adam, you can make any show & tell fun and I can always count on you to put a smile on my face on nearly any given day! Especially much needed during Covidageddon !
I love how Adam got ahead of the term fanny pack for the UK audience. But I still sniggered through the whole thing lol! 😂
I would miss winter so much. I spent all day in the fish house with the kids. That weather would take part of my soul.
In the UK we call it a BUM BAG!
That's mostly because fanny has a different meaning here, lol
Bum Bag would probably sounds like “Homeless Bag” over there 🤔🙃

When you're battling a depression, these videos help a lot.
I’ve been carrying a brass pen for the last couple of years and lately it’s been a great “no touch” tool for elevators, door handles and chip and pin pads. It’s great!
I went with an over the shoulder mens carry all/map case. Particularly helpful now that i only go out less than once a week. If you put your wallet down and don’t pick it up for ten days its really easy for it to move or you forget where you put it.
When can we expect a Savage Industries EDC fanny pack? :D
I want a Savage industries laptop bag. When I was in the market for one a few months ago I checked and was disappointed one didn’t exist...
Just spent the last hour researching fanny packs. Thanks for inspiring the life upgrade 👍🏼
I started using a Lamy fountain pen earlier this year as well, after reading a mention of it in a Wirecutter article. I'd always thought of fountain pens as fiddly and prone to leaking and avoided them, but after giving it a try it's become a favorite.
Ideas for other Demerit Badge, dropping something fragile/messy, breaking a bolt or screw, scratching a finish, losing a screw from a project, taking a sip from the mug that wasn't coffee.

@@wwaxwork LOL do that too often when working with watercolors. gah, wrong brown liquid.
Big fan of the fanny packs. I've been EDCing one for a couple years now. Definitely got some ideas to add to my kit!
I recently fell in love with a Hilltop Packs fanny pack. It keeps everything you need in a convenient place and you can be very creative with how it looks if you want to.
It´s funny that Adam bought this Lamy fountain pen as an adult and is so stoked about it. For german kids in primary school, this pen is like the default pen which is gifted to you by your grandparents at the age of 6. Most of my classmates used it and i used mine for well over 10 years as well. And he is right, its a great pen :)
I’m glad you started looking into Fountain pens. That has been my COVID hobby. I started with a Lamy and have gifted one as well. It’s a great place to start. I don’t particularly like the grip section. I wonder how useful it will be in your making. Fountain pens tend to like ink resistant paper and don’t do great on other surfaces. I’m looking forward to see if you like it and expand to other pens, paper and ink.
Adam, given the condition of your fingers at any particular moment, I'd recommend a small package of band aids and a couple of alcohol/betadyne wipes. It's not much bigger than a couple of packs of gum, but damn handy when you need it.
I was born in Florida where I have lived most of my life. When I was a child in the 70s we would often have an overnight freeze in the winter so that when you awoke in the mornings for school the grass was covered in frost. We would also have daytime temperatures in the low 30s at least once or twice in the typical year.
That stopped happening a long time ago. Now when the temperature gets close to freezing in my latitudes it's a rare event.
as someone who has been riding bikes for 10 years, hip paks is where I place almost everything I need on my daily commutes. might make my own that can serve also as a frame bag.
Your description of the weather sounds a lot like Ohio. when I was a kid we used to pack away our winter clothes and get the summer clothes out and vice versa. now you just have big closets and you keep everything out because you might need shorts in December and you might need a winter coat in May.
Right?
Adam: "Weather that fluxuates between 40 and 80 in the same day needs three jackets!"
Me: Laughs in Michigander
@@fnsmike Yep, as a Wisconsonite, that sounds dreamy, non-jacket weather.
Yeah Ohio is nuts lately. I remember when we had seasons and it wasn’t so wet.
Can you please do an updated EDC video? what tools/knives/multitools do you carry?
have only been to San Francisco once back in 2008. My company sent me down to man the boot at the RSA show. It was in april that year. Googled what the weather was like, and what to wear, and saw it was similar weather to what Toronto gets at the time, so I packed accordingly. No shorts, some T' shirts, and a few hoodies outside of the uniform I had to wear at the show, and an outfit for a night out with the company.
We landed at 9 am on the sunday, expecting in the 60's. It was 98. It got up to 101 I think one of the days. I got lucky that one pair of pants were zip offs, and could take the legs off.
Absolute beautiful city. Though unexpected, the hot weather was pretty rejuvenating, after a peticularly cold winter in Toronto. The cold weather rolled back in on Thursday, along with the fog.
Hearing that Adam is into fountain pens was an awesome thing to wake up to on a Saturday morning. I had no idea he shared the same hobby as me, and evidently, several other people in this comment section.

He's becoming a product announcer. Pretty soon his videos will be loaded with UA-cam adds and half the video will be him hocking other people's stuff.
Really? Pretty much every video over the last year he's had it on
I have seen him wear it in several videos. He even says he doesn’t think it’s still available this would be a weird ad.
Also talking about gear has always been a part of this channel. I personally like Adam showing his EDC items.
Some gear suggestions for your Fanny pack: I’ve been using the pilot metropolitan fountain pen for a few months. The price is similar and I love the feel on paper. In comes in 3 nib sizes.
Flashlight wise, I love my olight s2r baton 2. It’s rechargeable and magnetic, but it can get ridiculously bright, perfect for looking for poop in the dark at 3 in the morning.
I'm a big fan of hip bags and fanny packs. I like that no matter what outfit I'm wearing all my EDC has a known place in the hip bag. I also love being able to just get home, remove the bag and have everything stay in its place for tomorrow.
Can you do a video on all of your favorite jackets?!? Thank you!!
Demerit badge idea: absent-mindedly gripping your soldering iron like a pencil.
Did that last night, like an idiot... fortunately it wasn't cranked up too high and I escaped with a minor 1st degree.
Twice in one week. Full on. Smells gross.
Hoping I've learnt my lesson. Time will tell.
I have two of the lamys used them for years in school! They're amazing durable and write amazing! But if you like that lamy, check the lamy swift pen. It's an amazing piece of pen! The mechanics behind the clip disappearing and how smooth it works is just fantastic!
I used the exact same black Lamy Safari pen for about 14 years from elementary school through college. Still one of my favorite pens!
Adam, you are hands down my favorite friend that I have never met! You rock your fanny pack proudly, and Merry Christmas!
Calling it now: sooner or later, Adam is going to turn his own fountain pen on a lathe.
The Lamy Passport is the BEST ever. I’ve been carrying one for the last 2ish months now, and it’s totally removed the Pilot and Schaeffer that I used to carry from my life. It’s SO reliable, so easy to service, so pleasurable to write with, and I love it. Get you one, if you like fountain pens.
Hey Adam
If someone hase not already told you. Fannypacks/bum-bags/beltpurses/butt trunks are the SH*** in Denmark a now and has been for a couple of years now. Not having to stuff everything into your pockets was a game changer.
We have 5 packs hanging at the door to the apartment and almost never leave without one.

Under appreciated joke
So where and when are we picking up the "package" and what kind of baklava (balaclavas) are we bringing?
life's greatest struggle, having to decide which jacket to wear out the house
Aaaaaah, I love Lamy safaris and al-stars! Excellent fountain pens, VERY easy to clean and maintain, and great for carrying around ANYWHERE, even when it might be rough on them, bc if it breaks or falls off a cliff while hiking, a replacement isn't excessively expensive. As long as I don't carry my limited edition variants. So few REALLY GOOD pens are that cheap.
I still do use my Pilot Vanishing Points more often, bc that's my favorite pen, but they're my lab notebook and crafting notebook pens, and only travel to and from school, the lab, or somewhere safe I might actually use my craft notes. But there's a LOT of times and places I don't want to bring pens that cost $150 to replace.
Thanks. My personal hell in a short recap. I needed more. Been carrying a jansport big student for YEARS. Downsized to a fanny. Its tough but keeps it minimal.
Instead of a fanny pack, I achieve a similar result with cargo pants, but yeah, in the rare times I wear jeans or chinos, I always have to switch all of my stuff to a shoulder bag. Being a chubby fella (though it's changed a lot lately), it's a bit more difficult to wear a fanny pack - it digs in when you sit down, it makes you look even bigger etc. Perhaps it's because I never found a right one, and I have to say - I dig the bigger area, but flatter profile.
I too am a cargo pants person. I will admit, the idea of not having to transfer as much stuff between pants does have it's appeal :P
Cargo pants wearers of the world, unite! 😁
My girlfriend (originally from the UK) drops in the room mid review. Smirks, churchgiggles *fannypack* lol (-::
I feel the same way! I never carried a bag besides work bags. I carry one to the store and anywhere I need to go now. I’m going with one of two Maxpedition bags for different purposes. Smaller pouches with PALS webbing on the back, but I slide an OFF-WHITE belt through and it’s a great, comfortable shoulder sling. Holds the gubbins and I can sanitize where I touch the bag while I don’t want to wipe sanitizer on a jacket. Jacket weather for me is 40 or less. Light chore coat, denim, sheepskin or horse hide... I run very hot

Oh yes, Lamy makes the best fountain pen´s. I own the same... :-)
But the other pens from Lamy are also great.
I love my 2k, but I don't think it's the best pen for a place like Adam's shop. ;)
Holy, that bag is expensive I would cry if I got it a quarter of how dirty Adam's is.
Zpaks sells virtually the same pouch on their website for $65. A mere $315 less than Tom charges for his version..
I have a day-pack, worn over the shoulder. Actually, I have two, one is an empty back-up. Very easy to control and access.
Standard contents:
pair of back-up eyeglasses,
a single 4-color pen,
a pair of earphones for my smartphone,
a plastic spoon,
a tiny widget with a very short blade (Japan has strict knife laws),
a small Vixen 4-power monocular,
a fold-away magnifying lens,
a pair of ear-plugs,
a one-cell (AAA) flashlight,
a plastic shopping bag,
a small pack of tissues,
a small plastic case with exactly one Excedrin and one Kirkland Ibuprofen in it...and a partridge in a pear tree.
When I go out with ONLY the day-pack, I stuff a small water bottle, a toothbrush with about a half meter of floss wrapped around the handle, and a tiny tube of tooth-paste in there. It's pretty stuffed at that point but I still have my shopping bag if I buy stuff.
Since Covid-19, I have added a tiny spray bottle of alcohol-water mixture. Hand wipes go in my back pocket. Smartphone in my shirt pocket.
It is the same size as Adam's fanny-pack. 10 bucks at Uniqlo. Three pockets. The hard plastic buckle is in a good location for both access and no pain.
In the hand, it feels just a bit heavy. Over my shoulder, resting above the small of my back, it is weightless.
Thank you for admitting your jacket obsession, I can relate. Also, after you've enjoyed your Lamy Safari for a bit, look at the Pilot Vanishing Point as your splurge upgrade, retractable/clicky with a gold nib that is ever so soft and smooth to write with! That is the best fountain pen that I've found.
"Makers prayer" demerit badge. When you're on your hands and knees looking for the small part you just lost.
That weather sounds like my personal hell. Why would you want the weather to be always the same? And why that miserable temperature range if it is always going to be the same?!
It depends what you are used to. If the place you love has cold misty autumn days, and you have to live somewhere like California, then you will miss the horrible misty weather. But if California is your favourite place in the world and you find yourself in Newfoundland, you will be miserable as hell.
Haha, chuckling from the UK as soon as Adam said not to laugh at fanny pack 🤣🤣🤣
For the holding loops, may I suggest using paracord with a wire threaded down the inside then just melt the 2 ends together. The wire would keep it open if that is what you wanted with the keyrings.
I am honestly surprised there wasn't a pocket knife or "Leatherman" in there.
I think he mentioned that the knife got a pocket.
Probably a swiss army (he likes Victorinox) in his pocket.

This is why Adam is so savage he doesn’t care about what you think a “Fanny pack” looks like. He cares about the edc of everyday life. I love the Don Quixote style that Adam brings to us. No matter the problem he has a solution. When I watch the movie ( the Martian) I sometimes think man Adam would totally do awesome in any situation. He would do awesome if he was in the capsule of Apollo 13 or in the engineering room at Houston trying to figure out how to work the problem. Lots a love for the tested team and Adam of course. Had the pleasure of meeting him on the boardwalk at SDCC in 2018 . He was going onto the IMDB boat and he allowed my wife to take a picture of us .
