DIY Lawn Striping Kit | How To Make Stripes In Grass

  • In todays video, I make a diy lawn striping kit, and show you how to make stripes in grass. I show you the 2 simple materials needed, where to get them, and how to assemble with minimal tools. The goal of this was to make a striper with easily accesible materials, and minimal tools so that anyone can do it. This design is very durable and could stand up to commercial use. I mounted this on my personal mower that I use commercially. This is a universal kit that can be easily modified to fit any mower.

    Thanks for the video. I have a stand on ZTR as well and was looking for a way to add a striper to it. This idea looks perfect!

      Let me tell you. This thing will amaze you! I ended up taking the back striper off of the platform and leaving the one between the wheels (it was getting hung up on the steep hills and ditches that I mow). It works amazing. My stripes look better than anyone in the area and I always get compliments. I'm going to do a year update on it by the end of this season. Thanks for checking out my video!

      I mow the family cemetery. And I have a hard time where the grass is so thick. And it has like balls of died grass everywhere. We have a 42 inch zero turn.

    You should use fender washers and then your lock washer and nut

    • @reallifetested2605

      Good point! It seems like the mat material gets hard and starts breaking apart after 2 years or so no matter what you do. Fender washers definitely help especially if you get it hung up in a ditch haha

    first time i used a heavier mat like this and it ripped easy believe it or not cause it was less flexible... but mounted direct to rear of deck and has 1/2 drag on ground, but switched to a lighter weight mat like a Tractor Trailer mud flap...works great. rollers are still the best but bang for buck/ and ease cheap install the bent angle and rubber mat is hard to beat

      This mat worked out great for the year or so that I used it. I loved it and had the best stripes around. I had to take it off unfortunately because I picked up quite a few lawns that had dog poo everywhere and the mat was smearing it and making a mess so I ended up having to remove it. It also didn’t smell to good as you could imagine.

    I’m restoring an old Scag belt drive walk behind. I think I’m gonna build a striping kit for that mower… Thanks for the ideas, I subscribed btw this looks like my kind of channel. We built a striping kit for a hustler mower back when I was cutting grass. We made a roller type and used PVC pipe packed with sand, it was mounted with chains. It turned out great, I was also thinking about a roller type that has springs to hold a little bit of down pressure. But I’m not sure if that would tear the yard up. I’ve never seen the brush type…🤔 I may have to check into that also.

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605  Рік тому +1

      The pvc packed with sand works great as well. The one I made worked awesome for over the year that I left it on. I was using it 6-8 hrs a day 5 days a week. I had to take it off the middle of last year because I picked up quite a few accounts for people that didn't clean dog poop up and it was smearing it everywhere. Before I realized it was that I kept smelling poop everyday in my shop. Turned out to be the striper. lol It did work excellent while I had it on though.

    Next cut you make on a mat, use the giant aluminum T-square to guide your razor.

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605  Рік тому

      I usually do that with drywall. This mat was so thick and difficult to cut with a knife I was afraid of hitting the aluminum with the blade and dinging it up. It holds up well though!

    Great job, however, in my opinion it might work better if there was a little bit more flexibility on the rubber. Perhaps a thinner rubber could prevent it from scalping the grass after it has been cut.

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605  Рік тому

      I’ve had this on my mower for over a year now and I’ve never had any issues with scalping, but I have had issues with it dragging pretty bad when going through ditches or turning around on really steep inclines with a ditch nearby. A more flexible rubber would definitely help with this.

      @@reallifetested2605, I am going to do something similar but I am going to use anti-fatigue foam mats from Harbor Freight. They are a bit more flexible but with enough rigidity to lay the grass with each pass. Thanks for the great idea!

    You ever add that DIY roller kit to the back you mentioned in the video?

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605  2 роки тому +2

      I ended up not adding the roller kit. This worked so well I didn't have to! I need to do an update on this. I ended up removing the piece on the platform and just keeping the piece in between the tires. It has held up great. I also get compliments about every day on how well my stripes look. Thanks for checking out my video!

    • @reallifetested2605

      You can get these at almost any farm supply store (from my experience) they’re called horse stall mats. Buy the width that fits your mower and cut / mount as shown in the video.

    I have a tree 🌳 question... our Oak trees in TN look like the bark is shedding off at the base. Have you seen anything like that before?

    • @reallifetested2605
      @reallifetested2605  2 роки тому +1

      It could be as simple as heat stress, drought, or even too much water. If the bark is coming off with no other symptoms that's probably the case. Are there a lot of limbs coming off? How are the leaves looking? Also check out the leaves for mildew. There are unfortuneately tons of things to check out. I hate seeing older beautiful trees experience problems. It's hard to diagnose without seeing them in person, but those are a couple of things to check out.

      @@reallifetested2605 we are losing some branches, the leaves look ok though. We did have a terrible winter last year and a real scorcher of a summer without much rain.

      A lot of things I probably shouldn’t haha but usually I pull one of the larger pull behind spreaders, dumping cart, or a cultipacker. In the past the cultipacker has actually snapped the eye bolt off but the mower has no issue at all pulling jt.

      So far the mat has worked great. I've had hundreds of hours on it. Fortunately and unfortunately I had to take it off because I picked up a lot of clients who don't pick up dog poop and this thing smears it all over the yard.
