    Love how you made the blades to survive rocks and still keep cutting. Ingenious idea. No doubt your invention will outlast anything on the market today. Also like the fact that there is no engine to maintain. Thanks for posting.

    Lot of comments about folks not having a lathe but the pulleys you made can be found at any automotive junkyard and for the blades a couple of old mower decks and a little ingenuity could of been used instead of the things you made. That being said, GREAT JOB, love it!

    • @Iexpedite1
      @Iexpedite1 5 років тому

      Speaking of dopes...Shovster wasn’t criticizing the builder. He was criticizing the people that claim he was only able to achieve it because he had specialty tools. His point is, even though the builder used a lathe, which not everyone has. The project is achievable with off the shelf parts.

    • @chucksherron
      @chucksherron 5 років тому

      @Mark Magoo he still wasn't being critical. You are defending someone who doesn't need to be defended.

    • @Iexpedite1
      @Iexpedite1 5 років тому

      Mark Magoo
      Again, he wasn’t being critical. You can find pulleys and mower decks and with a little ingenuity achieve the same outcome. That doesn’t mean a guy that knows how to use a lathe and built his own parts lacks ingenuity. Obviously it takes ingenuity to build your own parts. So, it must mean that there are multiple ways a person can achieve this outcome and not having access to a lathe is no excuse.

    • @Iexpedite1
      @Iexpedite1 5 років тому

      Mark Magoo it takes a big man to admit when he is wrong.

    Wow, that *really* does work! I was a little dubious at first, but once you added the swing away knives and the weight boxes, it started to look serious. Some shielding would be a really good idea, especially chain mail style so it follows contours and keeps any debris or a flung knife inside.
    That is one impressive machine!

    I adore your shop....an old stoned shelter where miracles happen....

    If I didn't know what wheels Ladas use, I'd say those are from a VW bug.

      After the war the soviets actually took a lot of machines and plans from German car manufacturers like Opel and just renamed the cars. They probably used the german parts for a long time after that. There are still whole cars that are just a copy of german cars.

It was not a finish mower just used to hack down weeds and tall grass around the pipe yard. And this was back in 1950's it worked real good. Have a nice day!!!!!!!!

    I would not call it JUNK. You used all these materials smart.
    Plus, you have lathe, welding machine, big angle grinder, big garage....
    I am envious....
    Here is a project-idea.
    Emergency generators are big problem.
    You only use them 1 in 5-10 years. Most people do not conserve them properly, and when the hurricane comes, they realize the carburetor is gone.
    At the same time, the tractor riding mower is used and maintained on a regular base and starts instantly (most of the times).
    How difficult is to make an attachment for the riding lawn mower, that will produce 110 V AC???
    Purchase a generator with bad gas motor, you will probably pay $20-50, or even free.
    Remove the gas motor, and dispose properly.
    Make a stand or a frame for the dynamo to fix it vertical.
    Attach a pulley on the low end of the dynamo shaft.
    Attach the frame to the front of the tractor. with bolts.
    Disconnect the belt for the blades and/or the drive.
    Attach the tractor pulley to the dynamo pulley with a belt.
    Start the engine.
    Biggest problem is the small gas tank on tractor, compared to the generator.
    Second problem is, that the client should know how to use hand tools and be ready to get dirty and apply a bit of elbow grease.
    Biggest advantage is that the dynamo alone is smaller and lighter, takes less space than whole generator, and does not need constant maintenance.
    The gas generator engine is the same size as the lawn mower tractor.

    It amazes me how many people have so much sophisticated equipment, but still cut steel with an angle grinder and cutting wheel. Why not a chop saw, or even a reciprocating saw? I guess some people just like using a grinder to cut. Great job on the mower man, you definitely have the talent. Hope you had fun doing it!

      The angle grinder is the most versatile tool there is. No need for posh machinery - just an angle grinder and a welder and a real man can build a space shuttle in the shed. :D I had fun building it, I hope you had fun watching the video. Cheers!

      Donn DIY, I always hated going through multiple wheel changes as they wear down quickly. My personal go to is the sawzall. The blades last longer than a wheel and are easier to change, and it cuts faster. (IMO) But it all comes down to preference. I don't even buy grinding wheels anymore, I only use the sanding disc. They last longer, leave a polished finish and do a quicker job! Video was awesome... cool setup.

      I use the leftover discs from the big angle grinder, these will last longer since they are thicker and I can also deburr the edges with'em a bit - they tolerate sideways pressure. But I agree, it's the personal preference that matters. I have thought about getting a sawzall - it would be a great thing to use near, let's say, a gas tank when working on a car exhaust system or something similar. :D

      Donn DIY, yes that's one of the pros I like about them. No sparks... or at least not until the blade goes bad! Lol what model lathe is that?

      Haha I was about to say the same thing.. do solid wheels with welded spikes for ballast and traction, Not to mention aeration

    • @cjpharmboy
      @cjpharmboy 6 років тому

      Also with the added traction and ballast you could add rotors for a wider swath

      Making any sharp turns with tire spikes would rip up the sod though

    • @jhitt79
      @jhitt79 6 років тому +3

      You would only aerate two little strips each pass though.

    Only thing I would have added would be some kind of guard to keep it from throwing rocks at your back. Mine would be aligned for higher cut, brush work, not lawn quality. Been wanting a propulsion powered brush hog - wide cut for field work. But getting killed or wounded for your efforts isn't my thing. Really needs some kind of guard.

    Extremely well done! Only thing I could think to recommend would be some small agricultural tires for better traction and some kind of deck lid to protect yourself from potential flying rocks/debris. I have to pay someone to mow my lawn as I'm always travelling, but could totally see myself using something like this when I retire.
