What Happened to Mario Galaxy 3?

- Mario galaxy is one of Nintendo’s best game franchises that they have ever produced, featuring crazy level designs, great visuals and a fantastic soundtrack done by an orchestra. Galaxy 1 and 2 are widely regarded as some of Nintendo’s best games theyve ever made, outdoing games like mario odyssey and super mario 64. So why haven’t they released a new one?
One reason may be sales: Mario galaxy 1 sold a whopping 12.8 million units, almost as many as the entire Wii U system alone. However, the sequel only sold 7.4 million copies, which is interesting as that ones my favourites. Considering the quality and investment into developing such games for the amount of sales they got, they may think it’s not worth their time creating a new one.
For context, before the Switch even reached the lifetime sales of the Wii, games like Breath of the Wild had already sold double this amount. However, it could be argued that other factors led to such a gargantuan sales number. While I personally think there would be massive demand for a new galaxy, especially on the Switch, Nintendo may think otherwise.
Another reason is that there may be too much pressure with a new entry. These titles have gained an incredible reputation and have solidified themselves in gaming history as some of the best out there.
I feel like Nintendo might find it difficult to create a new entry that is also as good or better: they’re hard to top. Therefore, they might want to leave the franchise as it is in order to maintain its reputation.

I never noticed the difference in proportions between Galaxy and Odyssey. Interesting. I also kinda prefer the look of Galaxy. My favourite look is probably Bowser's Fury. In Odyssey Mario looks "too" realistic in a way.

To be fair to Nintendo, mario galaxy two was originally going to be a lost levels kinda thing, but they went for a game based instead made up of many levels that didn't make it into galaxy 1
But if they did release a third one with similar music and great visuals, I'd definitely buy it
The two Mario galaxy games are among my favorite games of all time
Galaxy 2 had the gameplay, but it didn't have the heart. Learning Rosalina's story over the course of the first game and watching her and Mario triumph through the challenges before them while also giving her a sense of closure to her bittersweet past was absolutely glorious. Galaxy 2 felt like a glorified DLC expansion.
Because it literally was. The only reason 2 exists is because the team had so many ideas they wanted to implement that they decided to just implement them in a sequel

I absolutely love Super Mario Galaxy 1 because of Rosalina and her amazing backstory.
@@peen2804 Tears of the Kingdom actually continued the story of Breath of the Wild. Meanwhile, Galaxy 2 is just a retelling of Galaxy's events without any of the heart or emotion, straight up ignoring it's existence
Galaxy 2 is my favourite Super Mario game. I don’t know why.
The levels were good. The hub was great. It didn’t have any useless power ups. It’s good that it doesn’t have a story.
Galaxy 2 had Lubba which already makes it better.
Some people say that Galaxy 2 is just a retelling of the events of the original but I think it’s more likely that it’s set after the universe resets in the original.

I feel one day we’ll see a proper throwback to Galaxy in a new 3D game… but, I think they’ve moved on from making a galaxy 3. I would LOVE to be proven wrong though!
Mario Galaxy 2 had a surprisingly low amount of sales. I think it is superior to the first game, with better, more linear world selection and just better and more memorable galaxies. Galaxy 2 is very underrated and I would love to see a third game, but you made a very good point where its just too late. Great video!

Mario galaxy 1&2 are, by far, the best 3d Mario games.
Unlike Odyssey, they took them selves seriously and tried to not fall into the "Mario is cute" trap.
Instead of stopping a wedding, you're saving the whole galaxy, and bowser has cool dark magic powers(And actually intimidating in galaxy).
Also galaxy isn't "Meet the Robinsons" the game..
To be fair, I love Super Mario Odyssey a ton (one of my favorite games) but I also love Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 and I’m hoping 3 comes out or at least a switch port of 2.

This is probably a hot take, but I would like to see more water levels in Galaxy 3, simply because of the environments they can make for water levels, like Cosmic Cove, or Deep Dark Galaxy. Along with this, the music that goes along with them is simply mind blowing.
Oh well I guess the closest thing to Super Mario Galaxy 3 is Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.

I feel like SMG3 would be a fantastic launch game for the Switch 2. Just the thought of a Galaxy game with modern graphics for space sounds amazing.

So, what I would like in a new 3D Mario game is this:
1. The whole game should generally be "open world", like Bowser's Fury (strictly speaking, it's not "open-world", since for it to be truly "open world", the entire game must be available from the start, not require you to "gain access" to areas by completing missions)
2. There should be plenty of different "areas" to explore (maybe 15 main areas, and a few bonus areas, similar to Super Mario 64, or Super Mario Galaxy
3. Each area should have a nice amount of "missions" to complete. Maybe 6 for area, with the bonus areas having 1 or 2 each, similar to Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy.
4. There should be no "boring" missions, or "repeated" missions. None of this "do that thing you did again, but there's a time limit, or you only have one piece of health".
They should be like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Sunshine, where basically, every mission is different.
5. Keep the current "don't kick you out of the stage every time you get a star/whatever" mechanic they started in Super Mario Odyssey.
So, basically, I want a "open-world" game (Bowser's Fury), with a decent amount of areas (Super Mario 64/Galaxy), with a decent amount of missions (Super Mario 64/Galaxy), where each mission is mostly unique (Super Mario Sunshine).
And please, none of those pointless Odyssey missions like "Stand here and do nothing", or "Oh my god, someone left this moon just lying here in some trash on a roof in New Donk City".

Nothing happened. It never existed. Galaxy 2 was simply an extension of the ideas cut from Galaxy 1. Nintendo never does Mario sequels like that otherwise.

Possibly, but I don't think Miyamoto would allow it. It's always gameplay first for him.
I really would like to be proven wrong though. There are still things that remain to be explained. The names of her family members, how she met Lubba, where she got her wand, etc.
I hope they do it as the linear game for the next console, I hope it have a similar level design to the more open galaxies of galaxy 1 like honeyhive or beach bowl. I’m considering the potential of the more linear ones have been done in 2 and now they can focus on the open ones. The game should have a new hub world called Rosalina’s Spacestation which you can launch starship to explore different galaxies or have a story, more event like galaxy two would be nice too. The game can have new power ups like wind flower that summon a tornado when the wind ball lands which blows up object or mario. A air mushroom to have low gravity and finally split melon to let Yoshi split juice similar to sunshine. A new storybook which can be the connection between child roselina to galaxy 1 roselina. The story happen in toad town where it was already 10th star festival after the event of galaxy 1 and 2. Bowser attacked again and the mushroom planet is destroyed, citizens from odyssey also suffered this but Mario used a launch star and start his adventure. In addition, new move can be introduced too like rolling, ground pound jump and spin jump, but I only see 3D world moves coming back. Another cool addition would be power-ups to luma that affect the spin or pointer, like ones that can attract starbit and coins or one that can reflect projectiles. It would be cool to manipulate gravity to defeat bowser. Modern graphics is a definite for it. How about the point of developing it is that it is a long time from 2 and to take element of it to the next thing. There can be 4 regular, 2 comet and 2 secret stars per galaxy and 100% now don’t count the motion control star. Motion control is more refine and have haptic feedback. Also, the first time load up these star, the instructions are more vague and go for calibration instead of set movement. The star counter will be maxed out despite you can still collect these. The name will be Super Mario Galaxy Returns.

I love the Galaxy Games. Super Mario 3D Land, 3D World, and Super Mario Odyssey feel like very cool Super Mario Galaxy Spinoff games and especially Odyssey. In fact, maybe Super Mario Odyssey was Super Mario Galaxy 3 and we just never realized. Who knows but even then, an official Super Mario Galaxy 3 or Super Mario Odyssey 2 definitely should be made.

I saw the mario ds thing and got curious if there was any official super mario galaxy stuff but still none. Galaxy games have always been my favorite I love them so much I hope they will make a new one so I have a reason to go on my switch again lol, and maybe a more difficult one too it was very difficult as a kid but I think a few really difficult challenges would be fun

I kept dreaming about Galaxy 3 and hate that it wasn't real... I think it could sell pretty well if they made the game more unique and be like Odyssey but better.
Imagine if they do things like have an evil version of Rosalina and you have to team up with Egad and Rosalinas lumas to rescue them.
Also they could have new power ups like a bat and water form, along with being able to upgrade the spin jump. A lot of things could happen
I would definitely say that as a huge mario galaxy fan, I don't really want a galaxy 3. There was just something special about these games and the fact that they were released on the wii specifically that If they came out today they would be different and I'm not just talking about motion controls but also the feel. These games were very experimental with their gravity features and nintendo these days seems to try to make their games be a little more balanced and polished and a little less whacky. That being said I think you should definitely check out Super Mario Galaxy mods, there are some really good ones and they are being made by passionate fans that add new levels to the game. I've been used to the idea that galaxy 3 would never happen and I started being interested in the mods more so I suggest you try them out too
I don't agree with your argument at all; Nintendo's developers are one of the only ones out there who are willing to innovate and create new and unique experiences through gameplay. They consistently raise the bar for the entire industry, and the galaxy games did something very "wacky" that nobody else thought of doing at the time (and even today, I still can't think of any other examples like it). If there was going to be a third galaxy game, there's no doubt that it would be a very refreshing and original experience, arguably more so than the last two considering the current bland and boring state of the video game industry as a whole. I trust Nintendo more than any other devs; a hypothetical Super Mario Galaxy 3 would definitely be a perfect video game.
I think Nintendo is developing a massive open-world like games similar to Bowser’s Fury. However, I think it is so big that it take 7 years to develop. In the meantime, we can have Mario Galaxy returns

@@yn8789 No, the over 10 year gap let galaxy threquel lose a lot of staleness which is why they don’t do it in Wii or Wii U. With Nintendo mainly focusing on massive open world Mario game now, a linear game would be a great mid-development game as open world games have been traditionally hard to develop and not able to launch with the new console. Odyssey 2 won’t make sense as it won’t give uniqueness to the new console. Plus, I think they are going to have a linear & a open world mario per console alongside a 2D one.
Nintendo will never make Mario galaxy 3, it's kinda like how Sega will never make Sonic Adventure 3.

@@SecretlyGengar The level structure is not my preference. I also don't like the luigi padding they did after you get 120 coins. Galaxy 2 isn't as bad because they treated it more like a 2D mario, but 1 left such a bad taste that it ruined my opinion of 2 as well.
@@Rafathy i actually perfer the more linear level structure. It gives the game enough to explore, but to also create a similar premise to 2D mario games, bringing the best from both worlds. Not to mention, Galaxy has a simple but effective side story with a very memoriable soundtrack. The game feels beautiful but also has a sense of a feeling of isolation from the concept of space. Galaxy creates an aesthetic that most video games cannot emulate today. I do see how you have this opinion, as some people prioritize level design and enjoy open world games more. However, I would have to heavily disagree with you.
