Agreed. SOAD are something special. Their style is like no other band I've ever heard, or at least none immediately come to mind when I try to think of one. For their time their music was certainly unique, these days perhaps some else has tried to do something similar. I'd be really surprised if they managed it to any great extent though. I'm really happy that there seems to be some signs that they might be touring again. Unfortunately I missed seeing them live on their last tour due to the Covid restrictions hitting right around the time when I was meant to see them,
SOAD is never ambiguous. There's always a message. And what a fantastically unique talent to grab attention and scream a dire message. Serj is just badass.
They decidedly are ambiguous in various ways. One of which being that literally the lyrics for the chorus of Chop Suey were stripped from a random book and random page off the shelf. Like they pointed at it and just said "yeah let's put this in and see what people make of it" Which is definitely somem ambiguity with what they wanted to mean.
I think that part is completely in context of song. the first part (she leaves the keys on the the table....) is a kind of symbolism of suicide, because she will never return and doesn't need the keys anymore. In second part It is a kind of protest against God and fate, as well as a protest against predicting and judging others' suicide.
There’s 3 songs you gotta listen to from System of a Down and they are both completely different from the songs you listened to. Spiders, aerials, and sugar, they are all very very different from everything you listened to and they are all really really good!
I don't care that Serj's vocals won't follow the cookie-cutter style of sound. SOAD songs (as political as they sound) have an interesting and relatable theme.
Chop Suey was the first track by them, that got me hooked. Toxicity was the track that made me a fan of this band. I usually don’t like chaotic songs, but I listened to their albums a lot and I fell in love with their music. «Spiders» is another favorite of mine. Also Aerials!
A better way to describe their style is bi-polar, to me anyway. a lot of their songs go from straight up hard to soft and melodic or very funky like BYOB and then back to hard. IMHO they were the masters of the genre! Thanks guys!
Lyrics of the song and their meaning, Serj is name of singer/----------Conversion, software version 7.0 - serj making an observation of his day to day pre-system when he was involved in software. also working a play on words how the music itself is the software through which he will deprogram the intoxicated masses Looking at life through the eyes of a tired hub - speaking generally of the depressed, complacent, dispossessed, disillusioned mindset of workers across the labor force, particularly in the corporate sphere Eating seeds as a pastime activity - calling back to the armenian snack = but as a triple entendre discussing the consumption of natural resources and also loosely referring to the robust porn industry in california at the time (women getting money shots on their face) The toxicity of our city, our city - this urban industrialized capitalist existence is a drug and we are inebriated with it You, what do you own the world? - you being society, the economy, government and the individual. a cry against the concept of private property, materialism, and industrialization How do you own disorder, disorder - speaking to the chaos and freedom of nature. speaking against the notion that nature is something for humankind to master Now somewhere between the sacred silence - Sacred silence and sleep - in the present moment, in our subconscious realm we know we will die, we know we cannot control this existence we find ourselves in. Somewhere, between the sacred silence and sleep Disorder, disorder, disorder - sometime, before we die, we know in our dreams we are chaos. this control we try to exert over our environment is false like the feeling you get from a drug More wood for the fires, loud neighbors - double entendre - 1. wood harvested from trees on the planet to create a noisy urban dystopia. 2. referring again to the toxic porn culture of california. more horny men more pornography probably being filmed next door. Flashlight reveries caught in the headlights of a truck - catching an almost surrealist moment of beauty in the filth decay and pollution of a Los Angeles night. reaffirming that there is something real and beautiful being numbed out of life by the toxic dystopian existence Eating seeds as a pastime activity The toxicity of our city, of our city Now, what do you own the world? How do you own disorder, disorder Now somewhere between the sacred silence Sacred silence and sleep Somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep Disorder, disorder, disorder - same as above but with more intensity and passion because the realization is driving change in the narrator When I became the sun I shone life into the man's hearts - upon awakening from this intoxicated drugged state - you become enlightened and empowered to help others free themselves from this zombified state. to help steer them away from the drugs, materialism, the lust, the filth, the greed, the general bullshit of this dystopia
I so miss these guys! I can't wait for new material from them. Not only do they make great music that blends many styles including their own Armenian roots, but they also are very political and denounce a lot of inequality in society. Serj Tankian has a unique voice that captivated me right away. Thank you for this reaction.
As a kid I mainly used to listen to rap/hip hop until I heard the drums in this song then my musical taste changed completely after that. The drums here are Bon Appatitty 🤌
And😢 not so many BIG WORDS 😢 . JUST SIT THERE AND LOOK PRETTY. THE LADY CAN TALK ALL SHE WANTS LOVE HEARING HER TALK. ❤️ I'M JUST PLAYING . Y'ALL ARE AWESOME
Awkward???? Maybe i don't understand because my English Comprehension is bad Soad are unique. The drum parts alone make this song a must of the last 20 years.
I can see where they get punk from, specifically the fast part of the “between the sacred silence and sleep” section. To be fair, they mix so many genres it’s easy to get multiple vibes from one song, especially songs like Toxicity.
One of the greatest albums ever for me. The whole album to listen through in completion feels better. Check out “Prison Song” or for a song not on this album “Boom!”
It's interesting that you mentioned punk right away because I've always sort of felt that this band, at its core, is more of a punk band playing metal music. Their message, their energy, and their attitude... they are very passionate about what they write and they're super unique/against the grain. They've also mentioned being influenced by a few punk bands like the Dead Kennedys, which even before I knew that, I always thought Serj had a vibrato similar to Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys and shared similar political messages.
Looking at where music went from the late 1990's it got very splintered and many bands experimented with combining many former genres together. SOAD is a politically charged band. There has been a lot of speculation of this song's meaning. It could have many different interpretations.
Punk?? The only thing that System of a Down have in common with punk is aggressiveness and social and political criticism. But the punk movement made music based above all on expressing all its fury and nonconformity through the most basic and simple things. You could say that punk music was intended to "slap you in the face to wake you up." The important thing was not the musical composition, but the message to be transmitted. Nothing to do with the enormous complexity of System of a Down's compositions. And that's why SOAD isn't awkward either. The thing is that their level of songwriting is light years away from that of most bands. These guys master all the rhythms and beats like no one else, and combine them with perfect transitions, and with melodies that give you goosebumps. If you add to that the incredible voice of Serj Tankian, what do you have? Well, in the case of the song "Toxicity", and many others on this album, an absolute masterpiece. And, in the case of the "Toxicity" album, what you have is probably the best rock and metal album (and maybe the best music album) of the 21st century to date. One last note: the drum intro of this song is simply wonderful, one of the best and most legendary in the history of rock.
maybe the sound is from them being Armenian, i think the drummer is Chicano. give "fiddler on the roof" a watch sometime and see what you think of Cossack style music. no reaction just give it a watch.
The whole album "Toxicity" is brilliant, beginning to end. A Progressive Metal masterpiece.
Fr.
Beautiful album top to bottom..
Even the B-Side of it (Which is called "Steal this album") is an absolut banger.
INDUSTRIAL METAL MY FRIEND!!...😉😉😉
STA! is a Toxicity mixtape, new songs of the moment and songs prior to the self-titled@@Dnz-zg5km
Nu-metal
I dont see them as awkward to me they were like a breath of fresh air, such originality and still sounding hard. One of my favourite bands

I think they made US feel awkward for not quite being ready for this...SOAD, as a concept.
Replace awkward with unconventional and jarring and their title fits the bill better. But Awkward is an ok substitute for it.
Amazing ❤
John Dolmayan is an Incredible drummer. He doesn’t get talked about enough
John's the man.
He got me interested in drumming so long ago.

This is my favorite SOAD song followed by "Aerials". Would love to hear a "Pull Me Under" by Dream Theater reaction!

Awkward???? Maybe i don't understand because my English Comprehension is bad Soad are unique. The drum parts alone make this song a must of the last 20 years.
The sound feels more punk to you? SOAD knows to drop punk parts, but this song oozes heavy metal..no punk in this one
I can see where they get punk from, specifically the fast part of the “between the sacred silence and sleep” section. To be fair, they mix so many genres it’s easy to get multiple vibes from one song, especially songs like Toxicity.
Aerials is awesome!!!!
Great reaction; love your channel.
You gotta do aerials next
System of a down don't have anything that comes close to sub par. Great songs and complete albums.

chaotic flow is apparent with allot of artists but its one of those you gotta relisten to really appreciate
we need a "peephole" reaction. there are very few on youtube so a lot of people would probably watch it
That’s a dope song
My favorite SOAD song
Check out cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson (live in Texas) or Joan of Arc (maid of orleans) by orchestral manoeuvres in the dark. 👌
I've usually used the word "frenetic" in describing SOAD.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Please check too Alip's cover Toxicity system of down, his version more dark, and he singing in this one😎👍
Great Soad track
Serj is one of the best to do it his control over his voice from low to high pich is a sec needs to be studied !
I like you guys.

Golden earring Twilight zone
Hypnotize is great if you need more SOAD
Please react on other songs too. Especially for Deer Dance, Prison Song and Science
maybe the sound is from them being Armenian, i think the drummer is Chicano. give "fiddler on the roof" a watch sometime and see what you think of Cossack style music. no reaction just give it a watch.
how do you own disorder?
👍
❤ SOAD-Question! Please 😊
If not done already, I’d say check out some Limp Bizkit or more Papa Roach
Never considered these guys NuMetal, always thought they were a bit more like a hardcore band
👍💯
should react to "science" and " prison song"
I know you guys aren't ready for these guys!? Nobody is, if you haven't heard them before? Lol!
Why awkward? Ngl, that title made me not wanna watch this vid as much lol
Армяне круто решают.Я бы что-нибудь хотел бы этническое,но по метал-кор....
Can you please react to Avenged Sevenfold Cosmic?
I believe the awkwardness is from the Armenian folks music.
Next react to System of a Down science please
BRAZIL ❤
Nothing awkward about it other than your view..lol
Science is the best song on the album
Your background is sparse, to put it mildly. Try something awesome to hang on the wall behind you. Check Rob Squad reactions (500k subs)
This band is real toxic and paradox!🤔
