Watch in HD!!!!! This is a song off of my new EP called 'Titan'. This is by far one of the most favorite songs I've written, and I think the drum parts are really fun because a lot of the fills can be up for interpretation. I wanted to upload a drum play through for this song to introduce the release of my newest EP 'Titan', which I will have out on September 2nd!!! As usual, it will be available for free on Bandcamp!
I've taken a bit more of a minimalistic route in mixing the drums on this video. I had some requests in the past from people who wanted to hear what my drums sound like without so much processing. I also listened to past drum videos and realized that I really do over process my drums in some older mixes!!! So this time, I tried leaving things a lot more natural. The only heavy compression going on is on a parallel bus, and I am using multi-band compression on the entire mix. Other than that, I have an SSL compressor on the master before the limiter doing maybe all but 2 to 3 dB of gain reduction... As far as EQ'ing, I've really just high and low passed a lot of things for clarity. I kind of surprised my self at how little I used to throw this mix together!!! There are drums from the actual song still in the mix, but I did that on purpose just so my natural drums would fit in more with the final mix I will be releasing on the EP! Thats pretty standard for a lot of my videos... Especially covers as I've never removed drums from songs that aren't mine!
I've also tried using in some new room microphones in this mix. I have another room right next to my tracking room thats all hardwood floors, exposed walls, and mirrors. So its really reflective and 'fluttery'... My friend Adam Nolly Getgood and I decided to mess around with some different mic placements, and we ended up mic'ing this other room just as an experiment. It ended up completely changing my drum sound, and I was very please/shocked with the results!!! Anyways, majority of any reverb that can be heard in this mix is mainly from those room microphones!!! I'm still getting used to using those room microphones in my mixes, but I hope to get better and cleaner with it!!!
I recently started a Patreon that will have a lot of things available. I'll be offering the following:
- Drum MIDI for grooves/fills/songs/etc - will also include audio reference
- Drum Samples - both TCI files for Slate Trigger as well as audio files
- Raw/unprocessed drum multi-tracks from UA-cam videos and session work
- Drum Transcriptions for solo material, UA-cam videos, and session work
- Audio mixes from UA-cam videos
- Downloads to all current and future releases
- Production stems for latest release (Illuminate) and future releases

*Walks to drum set*
Crash cymbal: “please sir I have kids!”
The China cymbal also has reason to be afraid.
5 years later and the song still has the same amount of energy as when I first heard it. Thank you Anup, this and all of your other EP's forever rock!
Still!
Ya
7 years later, still insane
Yessssss same
Bro it’s been 7 years and this song still HITS HARD!! Anup🤘
you should be so proud anup. 30 years of listening to metal and I was bored. you have reinvigorated my love love of metal with intelligent skillful drumming. Congratulations mate.
Same here. Guys like you Plini , Sethu are at doing awesome work.
THIS - Man, I thought I was really done with music, I was so sick and bored with everything and the "New" stuff that was coming out (Around 2012) was sucking even worse! But then I stumbled into this channel by sheer luck - I was not looking in the right places. I think the first progressive song I ever heard back then was Soil by Counterparts - sick! That song really got to me and still does to this day. I just learned how to play it and it gave me a huge boost in appreciation and enjoyment of this song.
I know that Anup was in that very first search that I did back then and when I heard his sounds and found out that he does not play guitar but writes all of it (I believe all of this is him) well lets just say that I was confused, (how does he come up with this? How does he make it sound so awesome?) impressed, and happy that there was actually good music out there to find!
Now I can barely keep up with everything I missed along the way as well as all of the new stuff. I often hear people repeat dumb stuff like "all music nowadays sounds that same... too perfect... etc... and I think "Have you heard of this guy?" I can name about 2 dozen bands that all have absolutely unique and amazing music. Probably could name dozens and dozens more as well, there is a ton of great stuff out there - perhaps these folks are looking in the wrong places much like I was...
And I want to say thank you Anup! Music is so important to me (and probably most humans) and your sound is completely awesome. You helped me get through so many years where I really needed something like music to help pick me up. And the way, there is a guy that goes by "Wide Eyes" here on the UA-cams that is a fantastic guitarist and often records in a staccato style that reminds me of what you are doing; have you heard of him? If not check him out!
still a banger after so many years 🔥
Anup is one of the best drummers in modern metal.
Paul Ozz Paul Ozz is one of the best guitarists in modern metal.
Facts
One of the leading progressive drummers around, not enough cred given.
I can't get bored of this. It's a gateway to bliss
This man deserves year round supply of free Bhel Puri!
I've watched alot of drum videos, from the all time greats down to the current heros of our time, but there's just something about this performance. Hands down my favourite drumming video ever.
hands down favourite drummer, no matter how many times I watch this video over the years i just want to watch it even more!
It doesn't matter if I'm working out, skateboarding, or cleaning my house lol 😆 this song gets me locked in!!!
YOUR ATTACK IS PERFECT.
Whatever you're doing, keep doing it or I'll be big sad. Mad respect, man. Fantastic job!
The "riffing" on the cymbals at 5:30 ish is so sick
It’s Drewsif love djent
It's was life changing yo
i don't care about gospel chops, blast beat, rudiments what ever!! listen to his grooves and tune..... so Catchy. we all knew that drumming isn't a competition but ANUP you are the BEST.
Seriously the shining example of what playing drums is.
His incorporation of style, simplicity, and overall showmanship would make ANYONE stop in their tracks, forget what they say, drop jaws when they hear him. Let alone SEE him perform.
I love you, Anup. Thank you for helping me understand.
@Anup Sastry the dry ride sounds amazing against the bright crashes at 4:30. Tasteful cymbal selection!!!
379,682 views ? It deserves at least.....
...three times more than that !!!!
1. I agree!
2. ZOOLANDER!
welp, over 600 000 now. Guess we're getting to it :P
still working on it
Give it 6 more months
One of my all time favorites . Was lucky to get on board when he first started posting videos.. PRODIGAL GENIUS.. since he was 16 . Holy Fucking Hell .
Anup is one of my favorite drummers. Thanks for all you do.
not that it's about competition but your play-through drum mix is shitting on everything else i've seen on youtube
This is what I call a drum video, I enjoyed every second of it! Great work!
Thank you so much!
Since my comment, I rewatched almost every day this video. It's absolutely mind blowing, the music, the drum parts, your style.. I'm thinking about to make a cover
Anup being this excited about his new EP only makes me that much more excited! I can't wait!
drums sound amazing. Loved seeing how immersed the drummer got in the music. It's the best feeling.
Man you really play each cymbal like each is there own note.. Crazy cool the way you can draw the sounds from one to the next
that timing. Insane
This guy is an absolute pleasure to watch drumming.
so relaxed. Just cruisin' on through
Damn man, almost a year after your "Ghost" play through and you've improved so much in all areas of drumming, mixing and writing songs! Just goes to show what persistent dedication can yield for you. Keep it going dude! I bump this video every day, the tones in your drums are basically theraputic hahah.
hes misha but the drum version
Interestingly, Misha started on drums and even played them live before getting Matt on board.
chaotemagick3 Im so fucking stupid. I thought you guys were talking about the little Russian kid. You know, cyber bully channels are cancer cancer cancer cancer cyber bully channels are CANCER! CANCER!
WillBurhans to be fair, the periphery guys play a lot of Pokémon Go
Jtuccidrums i play Pokémon go everyday I play Pokémon go. The nostalgia in that song with my friends and I singing mishas songs Im call of duty bo3 lobbies
Yes, sir. That's just like John Gallagher in the early Dying Fetus days. Did you know that he programmed all of the drums for Animals As Leaders' debut album, too?
Also, fun fact;
did you know that the song "Facepalm Mute " was essentially entirely written by Spencer Sotelo? Periphery never ceases to blow my mind.
This song, and more prominently the drumwork, gets more vicious every time i listen to it. Mr. Sastry, you are a hammer
Hands down my favorite anup playthrough
This is drummer music! :) I love it!
5:59 RIP chipped piece of drum stick :O - This song is sick btw. Gonna save this EP for when I'm in class tomorrow, turn a boring class into something epic.
I'm crying tears of joy to the rythm of his bass drum
Man. I can hear your signature tom hits a mile away. So awesome.
I think this is my favorite drum mix from your more recent videos. I can feel the air in it.
Thanks man! Means a lot! Im pretty happy with how this turned out. I normally over-process things so much, and I did my best to cut back on that this time around...
asdrummer2008
I absolutely love it! The drums have so much more punch and clarity. I think you learned a lot with this release and I hope you keep this sort of sound in the future.
asdrummer2008 really nice job!! but as a hint - look at round about 2:00 and following. your bd gate or trigger lacks sensitivity. i can see your right foot doubles but don't hear them. keep on the good work!
Eric Chesek dude, you have no idea. I personally play a pearl reference pure. I just added the 6.5x14 reference brass to my kit and its a nasty drum dude. Same snare hes using in the video. definitely grab one
same here, I would also say when I think of a perfect drum tone I always think of this video.
I like that you named the EP Titan. I listened to the whole thing and I gotta say, the song Titan is really, really mindblowing. I liked it the first time but I think by the time you read this comment I'll have heard it at least 20 times. Each time a bit louder and now my headset reached its full capacity. Its night here so I cant wait till tomorrow to blast this peace of art through my studio monitors. Been a long time since I was baffled by a composition like I was by this one. As a producer and big fan of every kind of metal, this is really top quality. I dont want to do your other tunes wrong, but I really hope more like "Titan' will come. Favorite song for the years to come I believe. Much respect
legendary. every time as always.
After 3 years it's still a main song on my car! That arrangement is just awesome and the sound is so huge that i can feel inside my body.
Thanks Anup!
for sure one of my favourite drummers, awesome play through man.
Thanks a lot!!!!!!!
This is just one of those songs that can't be touched, it can't be altered in anyway it's a masterpiece. So catchy too! And it had that dramatic drawn out ending like almost every intervals song good shit!
absolute masterclass on the cymbals playing BRAVO
One of my favorite play through videos to this day
Anup... video has almost 1 million views, been listening for years. Can everyone sub to this guy or what?
Those fast singles between the feet and hands (eg. 4:08)... absolutely sick man. Best in the biz.
Edit: You and Matt Garstka should have a battle (and film it of course).
That crash cymbal sounds so good it’s like glass shattering or something so sick
no words for this guys talent.
I don't know why, but I love what you did there at 2:51 hahaha. It's like you were really concerned about the timing of that china hit, yet I still had some time in between the hits to duck and cover thinking about the chance that the world must implode upon the initial hit. idk
Selecting the 'Synthesis' ending in Mass Effect 3 finally payed off. This man is proof. Kudos, fine sir... this is incredible.
Always come back to this video for the drum mix alone and that snare tone. The song is great too!
Haven't stopped listening to this song in the past month when I found it.
This song is uplifting beyond a song I've heard in a while
I remember when I used to think that snare roll at 0:26 was mis-timed.
Now, I acknowledge the fact that it's just played too quickly for human ears to comprehend.
the playing was so friggin intense, even the camera was trembling 3:40 onwards
One of the Best.
One of my favourite songs. Great for cardio!
14k subs is a joke for a drummer like This.. Awesome job dude!
Those luscious mocha calves of yours are what dreams are made of.
This snare sounds so beautifully i'm gonna cry!
One of my favorite drum play through ever !!! Bouyah !!! all this energy and this feelings !!! j'adore !!! merci a toi Anup !!! :)
2:50 That fucking moment...
1:00 then 4:30 watch the light on the floor under the china cymbal lol.
Oh damn! Great catch! I was waiting for someone to point that out! hahahaha!
asdrummer2008 haha ive never noticed anything like that before in your videos.
hahaha..nice catch dude chris sheen :v
Irhuelz TV why thank you lol
some ghost note change the direction of the light :v hhahahah #LOL
It is so good to see a technical drummer play heavy music with so much feel. That makes such a difference when observing. He takes you on the journey.
Anup is simply the best
I sometimes come back to this vid to remind myself as a guitarist that anus pastry makes better riffs than me
😢
Init 🤣
no wonder you're friends with a lot of awesome musicians, you're a fucking beast yourself! this song is fucking great!
Impecable!
I can't stop watching this!! This is absolutely sick.
You're a huge inspiration.
would you ever tour this stuff? it's sick, would definitely get a crowd moving
I'd love to tour my own material. I've thought about it a lot as well. I just don't have the budget at the moment. A lot of my motives and inspiration lately has been to stay in the studio working on my own music and with other artists. But I'd have a lot of fun playing this stuff live.
sick man! hope you do at some point. cheers!
best song for me! totally love it
Outstanding!
this would be more impressive if you were actually human.
..said his parents said to the doctor when he was born.
Substituting the words 'he' and 'was' for 'you' and 'were' respectively.
@@aye-wull-wundaymaek-muzik5171 wtf are you even saying
@Joe I don’t know, I’d say that’s perfectly easy to understand. Why not read it with a sense of humor?
@@Joe-uz4dn Chill, lad...sigh. Going to need a liver transplant by the time you hit the 40yo mark.
@@FuCkInGWhItEcHaPeL I dunno man. Telling the doctor that "it" (I assume, he means the birth and/or the child) would be more impressive if he (The child, the father, the doctor?) were actually human? It's not funny for multiple reason, least of all that it took me a good 10 seconds to even figure out how to transpose the words. But you enjoy man, you enjoy. Also, "was" and "were" are interchangable words anyway.
This is crazy awesome! What do you use for your cymbal stack?
Hey man! Thanks a lot! The stack is made up of an 18" Byzance China with a 16" Mb10 Medium Crash on top!
+asdrummer2008 hey anup big fan dude !!! just say I know you use monster drum sticks lol. but ever thought of trying out using vic firth "titan" drum sticks ;D
A perfeição!
just awesome!
Dude was that you in the Periphery studio update?
yeeeeeesss it was danup.
haha, yea...
Nice man, what were you doing in their update? That is so awesome.
xXxEmbrac3xXx
He's the, uh... "entertainment", if you catch my drift.
which video..link please
The bass tone is fucking criminal. Great song though
Still coming back. That snare is heaven.
I am in awe.
I love your playing and programming man. What kick mic are you using?
Hey man! Thanks a lot! Its a Shure 91A inside, and a B52 for outside!
asdrummer2008 To be honest, majority of my drum mix on this though is parallel compression and my room mic's...
asdrummer2008
I was gonna say I've struggled to get a big snare sound out of just an SM57 or my Audix i5. Most of the snare I get is from my OH's (I have a lot smaller of a space than you.) Your kick and snare sound so massive man. I'm sure those logs of sticks you use don't hurt either though. :P
Chris Denman walk softly, and hit your snare with a big stick
Chris Denman get a kick mic with a smaller ribbon man. The smaller the ribbon, the more of a short sustain or "click" you will get. I personally use a beta 52 because it gives my drum a very nice open sound that punches you in the face
Internet: OMG This guy is amazing!
His Indian Parents: I wish he played the mridangam or tabla instead
As my passion for drumming and music grows with the years I feel blessed I have access through the web to so much music, instruction, and inspiration... you Anup are a great part of it, I love your work and how you play!
Thank you so much, take care, and keep rocking! ^_^
Nice work. Incredibly groovy. Fills are technical and yet retain a human element of soul. World class.
damnit Anup slow down
Can someone please give me some info for all cymbals, name, inches? Peace
I'll take a stab at it, just going by what it looks like on the video:
15" Meinl Byzance traditional hi hats
17"? Meinl MB10 medium crash
20"? Meinl Byzance Dark ride
18"? Meinl Classics Custom crash (maybe extreme metal crash?)
17"? Meinl Classics Custom Extreme metal china
Stack: 16"? MB20 heavy crash or medium heavy crash on top of maybe a 18" classics custom china.
Obviously unsure if any is correct but I play meinl and this is what they look like to me.
Meinl are the best cymbals out there IMO
Mitchell Grace Okay, thanks alot!
If you want exact specs, some of Anup's newer videos have them in the description! (Although he uses different cymbals now)
Seriously one of my favorite songs youve written been jammin your tunes for a while now
Not much to say about this insane flawless performance, but the snare... What a sound...
Too bad my vegetarian friends can't enjoy this, they wouldn't be able to handle the beef
this really is just a monstrous piece of art. Brutally beautiful
I am absolutely in love with your Tom fills.
your drumming makes me happy.
Such sick playing, so beautiful to hear.
Speechless.
This is my new favorite song. Anup, this song djents!
the best I've come across hands down....straight nasty
Love every aspect of your playing.
A pleasure to watch
One of the best songs i know. keep it up
what a great sound to his kit wow
I loved the phrasing in this! IMPECCABLE
Purfect Anup we go 🚀🌅🗽💪💟
