- WELCOME TO VLOGMAS DAY 8!!!!
In today's video, we're talking about arguably my favorite slot in disc golf. There is not a shot option/selection of discs that have changed my game more than an overstable approach option. From the entire Robbie C brand to just my ability to score well on the course, Overstable Putt and Approach is one of my most utilized discs in the bag. There are a BOATLOAD of options out there and I wanted to make sure to do everything I could to help you find that next disc that you might fall in love with too!! So what is the deal with these types of discs?? You'll have to watch to find out!!

Do a vlogmas day on stretches for disc golf!
Cold weather season is a great time to remind everybody on quick easy stretches to make sure they don't pull anything.
I've been using a champion Rhyno as my overstable approach disc. It feels similar to my pig in my hand and is super available
I love the rhino. I love the pig too.
I second your comment, funny story how I ended up bagging rhynos, went to a yard sale where they were selling discs; went with the intent on buying a pig. The seller asked to see what I was throwing and came back with an r pro rhyno; star rhyno and a halo polecat. Since then I kept the rhynos in the bag for the thumb track and bead
The Rhyno doesn't get much love nowadays. It's a great over stable approach disc available in just about every plastic Innova has.
I love that my champ rhyno is domey and glides, but my r pro rhyno is board flat and dumps.
@dustinwilloughby296 it just now occurred to me, while reading your comment, that I may want to try it in something other than r-pro.
I really do enjoy gstar plastic from them. Great. It's time to find a way to make more money.
The Jarn by kastaplast is def my choice. It’s the beefcake that I can launch at max power and it’ll still burn left (mainly a fh guy myself)
Thanks for sharing the slightly more neutral option with the A5. The Clash Mint would be another A5-style disc that's just a touch more workable on drives than a lot of these OS approaches (and Clash plastic is super nice).
I own just about every overstable putt and approach disc made and recently bought the toro and fell in love with it. Best putt and approach for me. I think the biggest thing is hand feel for me zone is too shallow, harp too deep savior has a inward rim angle, A2 similar to toro nice and flat and kinda shallow but the toro beat it out of my bag with a slight concave at the rim (not puddle) flat top, plenty of beef shallow enough to come out clean on bh but not too shallow for fh and that's why I bag the toro now
I have tried almost all of them as well, and I'm constantly reaching for "El Toro!"
One other to consider if you're a gyro guy is the Entropy. Picked one up for this and I love it.
Thanks for the shout out Robbie means a lot to see the disc still being used. I’m waiting for it to be aced and that would make it that much sweeter. Keep up the awesome work my friend
Went from Harp, to pig, to zone. I preferred the shallower depth. I switched from the pig because of plastic options. If they start releasing premium options it may find its way in the bag.
I also think they finally made some premium pigs because the Toro didn’t convert as many people as they hoped.
Jarn!!! All about the hand feel. Forehand only, except on rare occasions.
I bag the copperhead from lone star for my overstable approach disc. Started out with ryhnos, pig, and harps. Cant go wrong with any of them they feel and fly great.
Been using a suspect for that slot no one else seams to ever mention anything about this disc but enjoy your content and always wondering about trying something new.
Nothing makes more beautiful disc music than the Harp.
I use a Harp for conventional shots and a Peppermint for shots where extreme angles and more ground play are needed. I love this category of discs, they generally fall into two camps: straight and dump or fade immediately (better for flexing).
Hoped you would come with the answer.. I love all over stable approch discs and could fill half my bag with them. Deflector, racor claw 3 and the A2 usually stays in the bag, but zone, zoneOS, entropy, distortion, A3, jarn, rhyno, slammer and more are awaiting their time to shine from the shelf. Constant battle..
i switched from zones to entropys when simon went to mvp and its served me well, for a straighter and more glidey option (and cold/wet conditions) i have an exo soft tactic, much glidier and straighter for sure.
I bag 2 different Tactic variants (1- EXO Hard and 1- Razor Claw 2) and 2 P1 variants (1-Flex3 D-Line and 1- Glow C-Line). I love the deeper rims and variety of stability.
A3, in 400. Local disc shop owner suggested it and had it in my favorite color. I've tried others since, but I always go back to it. Just got a second one last summer, shout out to KJ.
What you were talking about with the A5 is what I use my Maestro for. I have never met anyone else that throws a Maestro and it's a really great step down in stability from the classic overstable approach discs. My OS approach disc of choice is the Toro.
I've used the Harp in VIP, bt soft, bt medium, and bt hard plastics. Also good throwing the Westside Maiden. I putt with the Discraft Roach, but have never thrown a zone before.
This is the video I needed 👍
I started out with a harp, but recently switched to zone. The harp just didn’t come out of my hand right. It flew fine, but I’d get the shanks every now and then. I don’t really have that issue with the zone. I’ve got a zone in esp, and in z line plastic. I’ve been wanting to try the A2 from prodigy.
I love my Toro it has really helped my game
I use a Zone because Infinite sent it as a mystery disc and it replaced a Breaker that Infinite sent before that as a mystery disc. I lost an A2 but wasn't in love with it anyway, it was a little too shallow. The overstable mid slot is also similar and I use a Deflector for extremely overstable shots or a Viking Loki if it needs to pop up a little. I love the torque resistance on forehands of every one of these.
Mine is the prodigy A4 in 300 plastic. What great disc
Calvin hiemberg tour serious glo toro. Chsnged my game. Its slmost my go to approach in any direction. I love it. Best disc ever
I was a Pig guy. Then the Toro dropped. I do have one that’s in R-Pro and I love it. The other Toro is the color glow run celebrating Calvin’s win from GLO.
Hellbendender Salamander... first disc, not a lot of choice in my area.
Tried lots of other discs & brands, I'm back to using it.
I use an a1. Definitely doesn’t have loads of distance, but I’ve been loving the control and overstability I feel when throwing it
Prodigy updated their numbers this year on a bunch of discs to better reflect what they really do. A2 is a 4204 now. I think that’s more accurate. Definitely more stable than the Zone.
Currently rocking with a Plasma Entropy I found in the used bin in near perfect condition.
DD Suspect - like a shallow Harp. Perfect feel for me and still gets a bit of glide compared to most of the overstable 4 speeds.
used to throw the pig , then zone , now I'm stuck on the razor claw 3 . It's deeper than the zone and a nice flyer . I feel like I could switch out for another one super easy . also never felt the need for multiple OS approach disc in the bag . I got 2 throwing putters and 3 mids so I could use those for a different flight
Harp BT Medium plastic. Fits the hand well. Not too shallow or deep with a grippy plastic.
I go back and forth between the Tactic and Stabilizer for this spot in my bag.
Jawbreaker zone for spike hyzers, savior for off the tee, zone for normal approaches, and premium sockibomb slammer for flexs and get down quick shots.
in the spirit of Christmas, I HAVE to mention the best of them all, the clash peppermint
I have a pig for forehand and a zone for backhands. Also envy for more straight shots.
For awhile I was using a Judge for backhand approaches. I was throwing them flat and I realized that some started turning over and thus missing bad. I threw a Sockibomb Slammer in my bag one day and tried it. Realized having a reliable overstableroach disc is important. I will have to try a normal Slammer.
Discmania Tactic
I feel it gives me the tactical advantage out on the course.
& ya know, so I can use that pun.
OVER 50 PIGS?!?!?! That's so funny. I'm using a Zone right now because I'm trying out an all-discraft bag. Toro has been my all-time favorite though.
Doesn't have to be a vlogmas but I would love a super in-depth dive into all things putting
Straddle, Stagger, Knee, Step, Jump, Spin, Push, Scuba, Turbo
And maybe even baskets
Marksman, Champcap, Elevated
I got the DGPutt app (discoverde from you(I'm 99% sure)) and I struggle selecting the tags for each practice
Ive used the zone for the past year and a half. I got a slammer on one of the black friday sales to try out. I dont go outside when its cold so i wont be throwing it until march. Just from the feel of it im thinking the slammer will be more for backhands because its so damn deep i cant imagine throwing it forehand. The zone feels like it was made specifically for forehands to me.
I ended up with a Yikun Hammer after a tournament that required us to use 3 discs that were 3 speed or below! It feels great, starts straight and finishes nice and OS, and it was the first putter i could get a good forehand out of. I got addicted to the feel of the double thumbtrack too.
Unfortunately it's fatal flaw is that there's only ONE plastic option 😭 I think I might need to check out some of these options to get something that doesnt beat in so quickly.
I love the destroyers there my favorite disc ever I got like 75 to 80 ish lol
New intro song has that Full House / Family Matters vibe going on.
A Pig. Or 3 or 4. 😊
I played with the Slammer for a while and kept going back to the Pig. It's not my most consistent. But it's the one that gives me more WOW shots than any other. Sometimes it fails. Sometimes it's amazeballs.
Hey, Robbie, can you talk about these same avertable putt and approach discs and their utility on anhyzer? Thanks!
I have a neutron entropy, a crustal flx zone, an bravo artemis, and a tempo for this slot, butni don't bag them all at one 😂. Entropy is very overstable and deeper rim. Artemis feels the best on forehand approaches and soft plastic makes it just sit when it hits the ground. The tempo is the least stable and has a lot of glide and i use it for backhand overstable approaches and drives. The zone is somewhere in the middle of these. All great discs! I usually bag the Artemis and the Tempo.
I do in fact love the Zone, I used to like the harp, but didn't care for it in premium plastics. The Zone has so many different plastic options, but the Axiom Tempo is another really good option, to me it is a little straighter than a new zone, so it fills the slightly straighter zone slot that is harder to come by
One super-overlooked Harp alternative that I think works better in their premiums and is more shallow like the Zone is the Anvil. You should try that guy if you have a chance, especially if you do like Westside’s premium plastics otherwise.
Mine is the DX Aviar3. I call it "The Brick"
After vlogmas, you should try the Golem by Divergent Discs
My jarn is my go too!
I have been using a Star Roc. I do not see that in the conversation at all. It seems like it always is a pole magnet! (I also sometimes call down the power of Mjolnir and run a YIKUN HAMMER!)
A beat up base plastic Zone, a Cryztal FLX Zone, and a Cryztal FLX Zone OS. Justice in the mid slot.
recently got a dd culprit clemons team stamp to replace my harp, so far i like it much more. sad to not see it here
The absence of the Jarn is painful. Hands down the best OS approach disc
So this might be a little weird, but I use a seasoned Champ Caiman ( 5.5┃2┃0┃4 ) for my overstable approaches. It's similar in shape and diameter to the Pig, but doesn't have the thumb track. It's so beefy and unwilling to fly that my mediocre technique can not throw it any further than the 3-4 speeds.
I do have a lot of Zones and a few Pigs which I throw regularly, but the Caiman seems like something others might not bring up, and I think it's worth a mention.
I bag Pigs and a Caiman. I like the pigs for closer shots that I don't want to fly past the basket. The Caiman gives me the same flight with more distance potential.
I've been using a origio burst harp 176g and I am not a big fan. Backhand off the tee is great but I bought it for forehand approach shots. It may be too heavy or user error but I never seem to get a good flight out of it. It wobbles. Curious to know if weight plays a factor at all for these approach discs or I am bad at forehand. Going to hop on the Zone bandwagon soon
Totally not bias here but I'm picking the Scale! :) Thanks for highlighting a disc from a smaller company!
Just wait till Day 15…. 😉😉🐍🦎
@@RobbieCDiscgolf Can't wait!
So I have a question since the A5 has the same flight numbers as an innova roc which I know is a midrange, if say you wanted to have less molds in your bag could you say get a slower overstable midrange in a premium plastic as an approach and also get the same midrange in a baser plastic to use as a midrange
i carry a pig and a toro for my upshot discs. and an Aero for a straight upshot disc and for a dead straight flight in the woods
But Mr UA-cam man you didn’t talk about flex forehands which is why I throw the zone OS for most of my approach shots. But for the standard I just want it to finish left I throw a prodigy A2!
I want to see you try thumbtrack-only options in premium plastics to test your commitment to the Pig, especially after seeing you enjoy the Slammer. Sockibomb, Rhyno, Ringer GT, Devilhawk, Copperhead, and maybe a Yikun Hammer but I haven't seen it in premium plastic like the others. Show Innova who's boss (well...besides the Rhyno).
Well, if you want your next upshot disc to dig
and make your friends say "He's got the game rigged"
while you drop in your birdies and dance a fit jig
and the wins pile up, sweet as ripe summer figs
for forehands and backhands, all you need is a Pig.
But yeah, the A2 is money, too. Great disc.
I misplaced my glow pig, and it’s driving me insane. My r pro pig is great, but the glow one needs to be in my bag all the time.
Zone because I LOVE AB
Zone because it’s the first os approach disc I bought and have seen no need to replace it for 150’. 125’ and in its Berg all the way, easily the one disc in my bag I wouldn’t replace.
Have you tried the lonestar copperhead?
Are you planning to play tournaments in 2024? Would be cool to see you take on some sanctioned events.
Pitting the R-Pro Pig vs a A3 in 400 plastic soon ^_^
Both the Toro and the Pig
So I randomly saw and held a Horny Toad (I know, I know, it’s Lone Star… save the criticism unless you’ve actually thrown it, I don’t care) and it’s like a slightly shallower Zone which I’m really digging.
But MR youtube man you forgot a gyro disc, being the entropy (just messing with ya) as thats what I use for my overstable putt/approach disc. but great video
I hate to keep “harping” on this but…but for me it’s gotta be glow Harp all the way.
R-Pro Rhyno
There is nothing more reliable than the Sockibomb Slammer!!!
No RAT?
I could throw a star pig for sure
Dart
Rhyno only baby let’s go just pig but better and more consistant rhyno vs pig video?
I throw a Rat in that A5 slot.
Harp all day
No entropy? The mvp stands might riot if they watch this video
just grab a Prodigy A2 in 200 or 300 soft. thank me later
Stopped watching after no Entropy. Sadness
After throwing as many overstable approach discs as possible, I landed on the Kastaplast Järn.
It fits my hand perfectly and the plastic feels amazing!
Give it a try!
Merry Vlogmas!
Feels great with backhand grip but pretty uncomfortable for forehands. Love the flight and plastic though
Ok!? The Järn feels especially good in my forehand, but every hand in the world is different...@@Discsforbaskets
