I BOUGHT Nissan's 4 Door 300ZX Sedan? *Infiniti J30t*

- I bought this 1996 Inifinti J30t to see if it lives up to it's name as the "Personal Luxury Sedan". It's powered by the Nissan 300ZX drivetrain with the 3.0L V6 turning a 4 speed automatic that sends it's power through a limited slip diff to the rear wheels.

i have three of these, theyre amazing. You wont be able to find replacement struts, but you can modify some old 300zx ones to fit or do custom coil overs. A lot of suspension is the same as s13/14 AND z32. WRX stainless brake lines will fit lol You can also turbo swap it of course with 300zx parts...
This one is for you then 💯
Not even Rock Auto carries replacement struts? That seems odd.
@@Cartier_specialist Nissan is bad with parts had to get rid of my g20 because I couldn't get an evap canister and it defienetly needed quick struts also could not get so running fine traded in st junk value
@@Cartier_specialist They seem to have everything strut related but no struts. Hey! they do have ball joints though!
The J30 is kinda like the Cefero it’s a mishmash. Kontakt is right about the suspension if I remember from mine it used the 300z subframe for the rear and Silvia front, or vice versa it’s only been 25 years since I had it I might have forgotten a thing or two! The great thing is like the Cefero and the Silvia the J30 and 300z there’s a lot of parts cross over. For example you can swap the z32 non-turbo manual transmission to the that car for stupid cheap. Plus things you’d never expect like the AC control the ECU if I remember is pinned the same for non turbo z’s. Nissan did a lot of this for a very long time with cross platforms that shared components.
If you experience a misfire, you want to check the ECU. It is located behind passenger side kick panel. what happens to it is the a/c evaporator, if not serviced, gets overfilled with rain water, that water gets inside , drips on ECU and shortens inside. Pull ECU out, open it and check for rusted connections on the motherboard.
Yesssss!!! More cheap cars. I love seeing stuff like this. I’m a huge fan of these also. I use to be big into the vg30 motors
The VG30 was an incredible engine. Full cradle crankshaft and Nissan designed it for racing so detuning it all the way down to 160 horsepower for passenger car use made it very reliable. I believe in full maximum horsepower tune it was capable of about 700 horsepower. Not bad for a 3.0 V6.
@@Cartier_specialist yeah it def had a huge amount of power than can be coaxed out of them with the right stuff. I used to be into them a good bit when I was younger.
Love your channel for just this type of content. Restoring an old school luxury car past its sell by date. Very cool stuff JR!
This kind of content is why I started watching your channel John. It will be interesting to see if the engine comes back to life. If anybody can do it you can.
I love those old Infiniti rear wheel drive sedans. I had a 1993 Infiniti J30 (back in 2000). It was a deep pearl metallic hunter green with saddle tan leather interior. It was one of the first cars Ive seen to have projector headlights.
My best friend had one of these, then I wound up with it. His grandad bought it for him with like 30K miles on the clock and in pristine condition. He's not really a car guy so it slowly got damaged over the years. When he moved, it was sitting on four flat tires and incredibly dirty. He didn't want to take it with him, so I helped him move and he gave the car to me. Rocket ship, it ain't, my 300zx would eat it alive. The Bose sound system is very good though, one of the very best factory systems I've ever heard. Now as for that VG30DE...I learned to cuss working on that bastard. Guarantee it has bad fuel injectors and oh boy do they SUCK to replace, whole upper plenum has to come off, and you will think Lucifer himself designed the EGR system.
Ha, after finding “low EGR flow” code on my new 97 Maxima, I got the tube out wrenching blind and by feel mostly. Had to get one nut off from underneath car and twist the end of pipe with large nut slightly to get other nut off stud. Yeah, these definitely have clearance/serviceability issues. Not exactly well-thought out for ease of maintenance, as some other brands. Delighted to hear about the generally bulletproof reliability of these drivetrains, though.
@@homesold In general, Nissan is a royal pain to work on. They're great when they're running and usually stay running, but boy when they break, it's never a fun time.
Between you and Cleetus Mcfarland. You guys are my favorite car channels. I cant wait for when you upload!
Thanks for watching!! 💯
At that time in Australia we only ever got the Q45 I believe and it was a sales disaster and Infiniti disappeared soon after. It was a shame for me as I was a Nissan fan due to the Skyline GT-R and they always seemed to have above average engines in their cars around then. Great video. Would be cool if you find a 200SX, called Silvia elsewhere.
Glad to hear you like the C4, it’s vastly underrated. The later models w/the ZR1 style tail end and LT power plant look great are reliable and so affordable. Also, the Truffles cameo is always appreciated.
I worked with a guy back in the late 90's who had a '93 J30t. I rode with him a couple of times in it. I remember it had around 30k miles on it at the time. Compared to the other available cars back in the day, that thing was awesome. Nice looking cars and smooth, if not impressive, power. Cool find.
It's just a fuse, bro! Finally I get to tell WJRGO something! I had a 93 triple black J30t and when the Super HICAS is disabled by a simple relay, the whole thing goes to absolute shit ala heavy boat just like how you're taking it home. Ok I'll watch the rest of the video to see how he comes to the same conclusion, but damn I loved mine. I went from a manual '92 240sx SE Coupe to the '93 J30t and that car was just exceptional. It was heavy, super luxe and yet nimble due to the Super HICAS. Many fond memories with that little J30t. I guess the later ones were shittily made? I remember them all sorta falling apart and couldn't understand why cause my 93 was built like a tiny svelte little tank. Leather was super thick and embossed, carpets super plush, etc. Firewall forward was like a marvel to me- most things machined and just super quality.
I don't think this has Super HICAS, only the early J30t did from my understanding 🤔
I saw on of these on "Neutral Drop" and was actually impressed
Legit looking forward to seeing this thing restored. They're such weird and quirky cars.
Controversial styling but I always liked the Japanese Jellybean, wanted one since I was a kid. I still have the promo VHS tape for the 1994 model with Johnathan Pryce, I watched it over and over...
My daily driver is a 97J30 base with 140k miles. I got it 2 years ago for $1950. I put factory 17's and lowered it with Eibach S14 1 1/2" lowering spring. It is the best drivers car I've every driven. Pictures are on the Facebook J30 page.
This was my first car a 1993 Infiniti j30. I bought used for $4,600 with 86,000 miles. Loved the interior in that car.
If I could help Watch JR Goes review the Infinity J30t
I would drink the shot of whiskey and cold Bartle Skeets with him and roll up the Number with him and get all schmoked up
My dad bought a brand new 1996 I30t back in late 95. I remember the small boutique like Infiniti dealer here in Johnston Iowa. Q45 and J30 in the showroom. What an awesome line up!
Iowa = rusted out cars, poor thing probably junked 20 years ago from rust
Ooh that car is ugly, love it..
It would look sick with some gold matching rims (doorhandles)
JR, what do you think of makers, like Mercedes charging extra to use the heated seats and the nav system? Is this the future for luxury exotic maker? To me, it’s BS. You pay for the stuff once in the car's price then pay to use them?! Just plain greed!
Don't sell this car. You will drive this car over any mountain if you clean the egr, and change the sparkplug and injectors and change plenum gaskets. Change alternator, timing belt, and thats it. It will never die.
i dont know why i like watching hooptie cars being brought back to life again, great content, keep it up, another idea is an old porsche conversion to electric, thanks
6:35 trailblazer! since jr bought that envoy xuv, everybody and their brother had to get a trailblazer/envoy. (me included) :)
Man, I miss my ‘92 Accord LX 4 cyl 2door 5 speed, white/blue interior. Only car I ever bought new. Drove it for 21 years and 254K. Rust killed it. I even would remove the rear seat back and bottom and built a platform with a 4 layer carpet pad mattress and camped in it at Oshkosh for 5 or 6 years. Great memories for a 73 year old ultralight driver! N.E.OH Bob
Those 90 to 93 accords were some of the best cars ever made.
Hey Bob, I still got one 20yrs and going strong!!! Coupe model
Interesting car, can’t say that I have ever noticed them before.
We didn't get this one in Australia... but i am getting strong U13 Bluebird, (Altima) vibes from this thing! My first car was a U13... and let me tell you, if it came with rear drive and a VG or VQ... oh man... 🤤🤤🤤🤤 Also... wasn't this car in Heat? 👌
I've always wanted one of these! They turn like a boat/mid 2000s volvo, but the engine is great and the ride is smooth. I believe they also came with a V8 in japan?
Money Pit, will take more $ in parts to rebuild front end and other issues than sellable price. Hope that UA-cam Views helps pay
Back when Nissan made great cars, the pre CVT era.
These cars are TERRIBLE. I own one and you can not get parts for them at all. I wound up having to put Chevy Lumina suspension parts on mine.
Interesting, what Lumina parts fit? 😳
@@WatchJRGo The damper cartridges. OEM ones aren’t available anymore and cost over $650 per cartridge if you can find them. You do have to fabricate a spacer so it fits though. I haven’t installed mine yet, so it might not work. But everything online suggested it should work. It is known to work for the Q45 and that car has a nearly identical strut.
And if you ever need a low miles engine/trans and don’t mind a trip to northern Indiana, my car has 109k miles and has a meticulous maintenance report on Carfax up to 2018. It’s just sitting on jackstands right now waiting for my dad to rebuild the struts.
Yeah buddy! Nissans before cvt's!!
Apparently this is the most bulletproof old hydraulic automatic 💪
Those first-gen ford fusion wheels make it look updated to today’s standards haha. I know those came with Multispoke wheels. I always thought these 90’s designs looked like submarines haha
Did it come with the actual infinity key that thing was amazing to see
No 😢 just an Ilco blank copy
Infiniti J30T is cooler than the 370Z Nismo change my mind
OOOO! An Infiniti with the Conquistador Gold Cha Cha accent package with the two-tone baby diaper brown leathers!
Cambelt is a really fun job. Used to be a 300zx technician in the UK. Knock sensor is a nightmare as it's in the centre of the V under everything and the short fuel hoses in the injectors go bad. Really good buy that
The headliner looks like someone exploded in the back seat.
13:25 Wondering what that was. The fluid splatter looked sinister.
What an awesome car JR! Love those old Nissan/Infinity rides. Can't wait to see her all sorted out and running right, and who better to bring her back to life than JR himself!
These Infiniti models were manufactured at a time when they seriously wanted to go head to head with Lexus in terms of ^high^ quality. Then shady Carlos G. was placed at the helm and the Nissan brand began a rapid decline into Crapville. Today, they're trying to claw their way back to respectability but it seems to be too little too late. The industry is moving full bore to EV's and all that Nissan has is the lowly Leaf. 🔜 📈 🔍
I used to love the Maxima. It was marketed as the 4 door sports car.
whooo!!! this is 100% more interesting than all the expensive stuff you've been buying :P save that old girl!!
It's more a hoopty for age and regular wear, not abuse. Unfortunately this is the beginning of the era of unnecessarily over-complicated underhood bays.
I hope to see more of these early jellybean era cars getting saved and brought back!
I always liked the J30. Can’t wait to see it all fixed.
I love two things about this video 1. You didn't tow it home 2. You drove it home and someone else drove the $100k pick up
good times for nissan, since you said it was a detuned version, could you swap in a 300z ECU in it?
3:21 If you would have had on an Apple Watch, with the Workout app open, you'd have run a marathon! =)
😂😂😂 I think it knows better... sometimes it tries to call the police and say I've fallen or been involved in an accident though!
I love this. These had very unique styling at the time--some of the cues were shared with the first generation Altima. Those wheels look like they are from a first-gen Fusion.
If you can't see the front/rear, from the side the doors look very like a Jaguar X Type. Or should I say the Jags doors look similar to those.
what’s the intro song ?😩 it’s killin me
Pretty sure that wasn’t a cigarette butt in the ashtray 😂
This could be a great sleeper. If the base engine is still good, this could be a killer!
... yes,
with that engine, a LOT of potential
I COMPLETELY forgot about these! I sold one at the dealership I worked at in the late 90's. Reminded me of a Jag. Cool find, but not financially worth restoring
Please put it back to stock with original wheels
I purchased a 93 J30 from a friend of my dad's back in 1999 and loved it. I had the local Infinity dealer do a full service on the car in 2001 and they over tightened a bolt when they changed the timing belt. The bolt broke about two weeks after service and destroyed the engine. Of course they said it was something I did and would not cover the engine replacement. I found one in a local parts yard with about equal mileage and had a performance shop do the engine swap. The engine and swap cost about $900 if I remember correctly. I sold it on a few months later. It was the performance shop that found the broken bolt and showed me what happened. I always loved the color of mine, it was Bamboo Mist.
I had 2 J30s so far & both were amazing... First one was beat to hell but still running... good engine & transmission @ 189k miles ...... Second one was a bit better still been thru abuse...still running at 245k miles... Odometer stopped working......I have a video on my page speeding 100+ no problem... Healthy engine & transmission!
My mother had a new J30t back in the 90's and hers had the HICAS rear steering option and heads up display which only the J30, Maxima, 240SX, Altima and a couuple others had. It only showed the MPH. Those are Ford Fusion wheels which might explain the ford keys
So... basically the Infiniti J30 is the grandfather to the Infiniti G35/G37 sedans and the Q50 sedans. Hmmmm🤔
The car styled after a toilet bowl. Seriously, flip a scale model of the J30 upside down into a toilet bowl, the contours match pretty damn close.
The real reason this car didn't sell was the tight interior/back seat and small trunk at this price point. I used to own a 1992 Lexus SC300 which had an almost identical pearl white paint, off white leather/brown color scheme. The 0-60 of 9 seconds for the Infiniti J30 sucks ass, my SC300/2JZ-GE/5 speed manual did it in around 6.8 to 7.2 seconds, ran the quarter mile in 14.8 to 15.2 seconds.
Ah, the J30, the Japanese Jaguar. I owned a '95 from '00-02 and loved every minute of ownership. This should be a fun one!
I had a 1994 j30t and it was my first car in my highschool years. Brand new it was a beast. Dark Forest Green with what I call puke orangish interior and Gold BBS "snowflake" rims. Bought it because I couldn't afford a 300zx so next best thing with the same motor and even four-wheel steering. But eventually got those electrical gremlins. F'ing loved that car. Can't wait to see where this project leads.
I have always wanted one of these. I still have a 1996 Maxima I bought 17 years ago. Over the years I've had a '92 and '94 Acura Legends. I read a long time ago that the J30 was the fastest of the Japanese luxury sedans at the time.
VG's are fun, but i like the VQ a whole lot more, had a 1991 300zx and holy cow it was a pain in the butt to work on, felt like everything was shoehorned into the engine bay. But, the Maximas are fun to play with. We have a 1997 I30 with a VQ30DE in it. They are pretty much maximas, with a bit more options and a facelift.
That car would have a $72,103.37 sticker price in todays money. Amazing innit? Oh, do not forget to add dealer markup greedy POS and a bunch of garbage you wouldn't need or want they sneak into the sticker. So figure $80,000.
Smokers package? Was EVERY car built from 1900-mid 2000’s not built with a “smoker package”? I can’t remember an old car that didn’t come with an ashtray.
question… in your opinion what is the better for my 2014 kia cadenza 3.6 GDI Liquimoly DI-Jectron or BK 44 fuel system cleaner for carbon removal
Just don’t go hitting concrete garden beds and backing into police cars like Robert Downey Jr did in his BBS equipped J30t in Hearts n Souls. Having the “t” at the end means you have 4WS as well?
Please, please, please find a 2000 M45, the V8 big body Infiniti. Those will always have a place in my heart along with the late 90's Lexus LS400
Never knew these were RWD 😮Love the shape of the rear end and that it’s obd2. Great find
In 1996 Infinity had a function at a hotel I worked at in Palm Springs. We had several cars in our ballrooms one of which was a white J30t trimmed in gold and puke green Qx4. Can't beat 90s luxury.
Well damn your old
So it's kinda like my 06 Charger RT, a 4 door with a powerful engine except mine has a RT badge on the trunk just to let you know what just passed you. I bet it gets twice the mpg and is still pretty quick when it's right.
I hope you get it all fixed up and do some stupidity with it before it goes away 👍
Any Charger would put bus lengths on this thing 😛
When you said 0 to 60 in 9 seconds I thought exactly the same thing. The 318 in my Dart used to do it in 9 seconds after all the bolt ons and distributer timing curve tweaks I did to it. Maybe if it turns out really nice you should check on throwing a turbo or two on it.
These were originally very well-built cars, high quality interior materials, excellent fit and finish, good paint, really all-around high quality effort that just never got the same level of respect or attention as Lexus. Compromised interior packaging might have been part of that, but an overlooked gem when new
I had a black j30t with black leather. Amazing daily. The rear tires turn in providing excellent cornering
This is a nice pickup! The OG Infinitis had an amazing amount of content and build quality for the buck.
Though not quite to the same level, I did have on 04' I35, and it stayed hecking strong through nearly 150k miles. Still miss that car.
My great aunt and uncle had a 2000 Q45t. I truly loved that car and I wanted it as my first vehicle. Butttt then I got tall and didn’t fit comfortably in it anymore. So unfortunately, the car sat for about 6 years before it was finally donated a few months ago. Only 102,000 miles!
Who could afford $39,000 in 1996? I paid 35K for a 2023 RAV4 Hybrid and thought I paid too much.
I almost bought one of these back in the day, the abnormally small trunk on the account of the gas tank being directly behind the passenger seat was super weird... Now I can live vicariously through you!
There are people selling cars for 3k with no engine. So buying something you drove home for $1400 is a when. I love those cats… it is very hard to find one in decent condition.
Grandma had a burgundy one of these growing up. Bought it brand new in 1995. She drove it until 2006 when she bought a brand new Jaguar. Was a good car. I learned how to drive on it.
WEDGE? DOORSTOP??? "Triumph TR-7 'The shape of thing to come'! First on the block.
Uhhh, bolt-on crankshaft counterweights, nice! They're about due for a re-torque, I'm afraid.
It was around 1999. My parents were looking for a new car. They had their eyes on a 98 Taurus, I had my eyes on a 1996 J30. 11 year old me had little say, and 1996 was just a little too old.
Do UA-camrs intentionally buy, and drive these cars long distances, without doing basic repairs for the 'drama'?
YES!!!!! I last drove one way back in 2004. I considered trading my Q45 for it.
Oh man, Infinitis were so good! The new ones are great cars, too, in their own right, but it's hard to compete with the brand-new cars coming out. Hopefully Nissan lets Infiniti spend more money.
Am I the only one?? But when JR does a video from the house, I’m looking for a Truffles appearance….
If the powertrain and frame is solid then did okay for $1,400. It'll need a lot of maintenance and repairs. Repaint the front bumper cover.
Extremely Avant garde offering hampered by ridiculous curb weight and small back seat making it a car with no buyer
Watch Jr Kinda Go.
I never cared for the rounded butt and the rear seating always seemed on the small side. I followed a couple guys in a forum back in the day that manual swapped a couple of these. Since it shares parts with the 300zx it wasn't a hard swap.
I was a kid when these came out and my dad's friend had one with 20k miles. Drove nicely and I still want one. Back then I didnt know these had z32 powertrain. I own a 93bz32tt and I can work on these cars with my eyes closed.
Sympathy like and comment for the algorithm. Basically, it’s just my Christmas spirit.
i think your tire wobble is caused by the fix-a-flat tire sealant (the can you found in the trunk)... they cause your tire's balance to be way off... but as you drive they tend to slosh and move about inside the tire... which explains why you said the wobble was gone after a while driving it down the highway.
I love J30s had one years ago that I bought as a project but never got to use it someday I'll get another but I did recently buy a 96 Q45 to play with
My 01 frontier with the ka24 is still going after 315k. Nissan is an absolute bullet, I'd say Toyota and Nissan are pretty close
In this vein, my younger daughter is getting a metallic black '01 Audi A8 Quattro to drive that is in great shape. She thinks it is so cool
It’s not worth it to sort out other than the suspension and put on some descent cheap cool 90’s jdm wheels like some 3 pieces are even dirt cheap right now. You can find deals and do a simple to repair newer v6 swap from anything vq or newer or a cheap 5.3 ls with an eBay turbo if you’re feeling like a good track weapon. There is a lot that can fit in there engine wise.
Be careful of Nissan electric motors. I had a a Maxima of this vintage and all the fans wiped out. The radiator fans and the cabin fan all crapped out so be wary of that. Love this car, btw.
I hope the knock sensor in the console isn't a foreshadowing of what comes next, because it requires a LOT of disassembly to even get to it. Good content for the channel if it is though..
I’m a fan of old cars and would love to try and find an identical model
Of this car been kinda interested in one idc if I have to pay top dollar for a good one but I can only find regular j30 I found a 93 for 7750 but it’s not a j30t…
