- I bought this 1996 Inifinti J30t "Personal Luxury Sedan" and it was cheap. It's powered by the Nissan 300ZX drivetrain with the 3.0L V6 turning a 4 speed automatic that sends it's power through a limited slip diff to the rear wheels. Even though it sounds like a great package it's definitely broken and has been misfiring since I picked it up. Today we're going to dive in, figure out whats wrong with it and try to get it running right.

Never let people critique your diagnostic style as mine is very similar and has served me well. Start small and cheap and go from there. I once had a friend's sister come to me in a panic as the blower motor in her 1997 Pathfinder had stopped working in the middle of the summer. I knew the A/C had a charge because if you drove at speed with the intake on fresh, you could feel cold air being forced through the vents. I checked the fuses, all good and same with the relays. A new blower motor was going to run in the hundreds of dollars but I was hesitant to commit her to spending that kind of money when I wasn't sure it would fix the issue. A bit of research later, I found Nissans and Infinitis of that era had a blower motor resistor that goes bad so I gave her the part number, she ordered it and I installed it in a matter of minutes. Ta-da...the fan worked perfectly. She asked how I knew that would fix it and I told her I didn't. It just seemed smarter to go after the $25 resistor with known failure history than the $350 blower motor that didn't.
I love that you’re such a regular at O’ Reilly’s they just let you behind the counter.
They let me on the computer once behind the counter. I'm not a regular.
I don't even really like orileys much.
I was looking around for a master cylinder for a clutch to use for a sim racing pedal setup.
@@caddyguy5369 Well, yeah. That works in most places if you pull a gun on them. You crazy person. Stop doing that!
@@caddyguy5369 it's really not rare at all lmao
@@jacobwebb8818 Did I say it was or wasn't? My comment was kind of evidence of that, huh?
Compression test should always be the last troubleshooting step before throwing in the towel, 99% of the time it's either not getting spark or not getting fuel, I would have done a Compression test if we already knew there was engine damage, I think you went about this the right way by checking the obvious before diving into it
I swear I look forward to your videos EVERY DAY LOL shop or no shop I appreciate you brother
There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with how you troubleshoot. A compression test is waaay down the list when checking out most issues.
How has O'reilly's not sponsored John? The least they could do is give him free parts for all of the advertising he does for them.
Parts at cost would be a fair trade for how much he puts them on camera.
“When one hears hoofbeats, think horses not zebras.”
Whatabout unicorns?
@@timc9893 unicorns are overrated, zebras are the way to go👍😁
Might want to rethink that when you're on safari though.
Unless your in africa
Great video John!! I think with the amount of knowledge you acquired over time, you should be able to just throw in the application and receive your PhD in Automobile Engineering.
I like your troubleshooting style. We all do it our own way
I like seeing others do diags their way. If I run into a wall with my style I use someone elses to see if I get to the problem. Many styles to find that 1 problem.
Your method of diagnosing is the same as mine, and the same as every mechanic I know. Mechanical failure outside of bearings is rare, thus making a compression test a complete waste of time. A single cylinder misfire is a coil or a plug 95% of the time, the remaining 5% is wiring or fuel injector.
That poor Ramcharger. it didn't ask to be destroyed like that.
The ambient air temp sensor is only for you to know the outside temperature lol…Your intake air temp sensor is completely separate
just a heads up, fair chance the knock sensor wiring is broken, if its like the 300zx the best bet is to bypass it. if the knock sensor isnt working it will go into the knock maps, to bypass the knock sensor you will need a 1 meg resistor (1000k) and bridge the knock wiring. hope this helps
Mind you he probably didn’t read this
@@eivad1 most likely not, but cant say i didnt try, they are so under powered when in the knock maps
Knock sensor issues on the vg are very common, usually the sub harness in the valley. Quick easy fix is adding a resistor after unplugging the sub harness. Restores power but is obviously then unprotected. Another few checks are the tps voltage and setting base timing
If I could help Watch JR Goes work on the Infinity J30T I would drink the shot of whiskey and cold Bartle Skeets with him and puff on the Cannibus cigars with him and get all schmoked up.
Occam's Razor, put simply, states: “the simplest solution is almost always the best.” It's a problem-solving principle arguing that simplicity is better than complexity.
My old boss had one of these when new. He always mentioned back in the day that it had a 300ZX motor, like a broken record. It was very annoying, so these videos are very nostalgic for me.
Leakdown test is better than a compression test.
It is funny your boss didn't know that a 300ZX engine was and is not big deal
@@mexicanspec he had a real Shebly Cobra and a TVR Griffith, yet he bragged about the 300ZX engine in the Infinity. All I know, he signed my paychecks
Same engine as a 300ZX I hear. 🤔
My Lexus GS 300 has a Toyota Supra Engine in it. (It's not, but truth is, this GS believes it is a Supra!)
Those Maxima's have the Z car engine in em!!!!! lol
When will O'Reilly sponsor JR??? A free commercial!
De-install the old one.....which is much different than removing the old one! 👍😀👍 Great video as always!
Exactly 😂
De-install …I caught that also! Funny
It actually kind of makes sense. You can't remove the old one until you deinstall it. Otherwise the threads hold it down. Once deinstalled it can be removed.
I work in TV and Radio engineering... We de-install equipment and very often use "adapti-cators" 🙂
My car was having a bad stumble just below 5k rpm. No codes. So I found out when it was cold it would rev to redline and the stumble came when hot. Little data logging to check sensors and the cam sensors performance would drop but not enough to trigger a code. Changed it and its doing great.
Every mechanic or dyi or tech has a different approach to diags. No one is wrong if it works for them.
Correct troubleshooting in my opinion. If the sensor checks out good with the multimeter etc, then the next place to look is the wiring going to and from the sensor, or the wiring the sensor wiring ties into. No continuity--no workee
I do the "ear" compression test and simply listen as the starter turns the engine over. You can hear uneven compression.
The one car that DOES matter to check compression on is the Geo Metro. Those little engines are quirky, and can pop head gaskets or burn valves pretty easily
I'm always amazed at how many "Armchair Mechanics" you have to deal with on a daily basis. Everybody's a master technician (Yeah, right ).
I know how to fix the warp-drive on Galaxy class star-ships and 1999 Buick Park Avenues. "I'm mechanical"
Bro people always Monday night quarterback they way other people do things. If the end result is the same it doesn't matter what path you take to get there. Do what works for you, at the end of the day it's your money and your time 🤷♂️
Nice to be able to go behind the counter.. Sometimes I wish I could!
My 90 Nissan Pathfinder's wiring harness was its downfall, the insulation on those 90s Nissan harnesses just don't hold up over time. Not surprised at all with the things we're seeing on your Infiniti.
Puts screw driver in ear, "feels nice" 🤣
My 300zx had the two middle cylinders with low compression so I sold it for 250 bucks to buy a engine hoist to get rid of it
Merry Christmas John ,enjoy all the content you put out I can tell it's a lot of work, from one of your Super Boomer subscribers :)
Merry Christmas, and thanks for watching! 🍻
Looks like you replaced the "Ambient" temp sensor not the "Intake" temp sensor, I think the IAT is inside the MAF sensor, that expains the MAF circuit A code, try cleaning or replacing it to see if it runs better.
The IAT is in the lower part of the air intake resonator; closer to the driver front turn signal light.
You just test the failed cylinder not all 6 takes 3 min
ALWAYS just replace the gas with hi test and do an Italian tuneup....usually fixes most performance issues
Well if you get it running well and you really like it put a turbo or two on it and make it stupid fun👍
I am a "trained mechanic", and I was taught to do compression and leak down tests. With experience and knowledge, your way will work too.
Well, I know you won’t respond, but since when r customers allowed to go behind the register and look up parts
When you’re in the store every day, they’ll let you save them time 🍻
First order of business for the RAM charger, put the door handles back on.
And put glossy paint on it, and finish the interior, get rid of the black wheels. It's just not really done.
That Ram Charger is pretty cool!
Be honest no one like comprehend test who cares it's old car and l think you told as what's wrong with it when u got the car and you doing this at home so no need people get upset about doing stupid test when some one like you buying all kinds of expensive cars l know some people like old cars but u had experience just buy hearing the engine. John l have question for you l found 1994 RX7 twin turbo with 90 thousand mile one owner asking for $28000 for the car and it's black on tan stock really clean so what you think of the price and it's Ca car . Thanks for the video
A compression test are if you buying a real nice car that you’re going to keep but for a simple flip car no need
That truck at the end is sick! I'd love to throw a big audio system in it and take it to shows! If I lived closer, I swear I'd buy it lol👌
These 'repairs' look like the typical 'guy that works on houses thinks he can work on cars'
Yup! Although any electrician would've tried a bit harder 😬
@WatchJRGo I should bring my 2012 Impala over so you can troubleshoot my check engine light that won't go away lol
Merry Christmas to you and the family. Thank you for such an educational show. All the best for 2023!
I wish I had 10 percent of your electrical knowledge and patience when dealing with your rebuilds. Kudos JRGO
I used to use a compression tester but give up. After a while you can hear it. It goes from "budabumbudabumbudabum" to "yatatatatatatat".
Everyone is an expert on youtube, don't you know that. Thats why they're on youtube! You take pointers that you learned watching someone else, then use that knowledge to critique others... EASYYYYYY :)
Many "experts" in the comments. You do what works best for you. Merry Christmas!! Thank you for the video content!!
Hey I’d be interested in buying your Infinit J30t. I sold these cars fresh out of college in the early 1990’s and current have in my collection an original 1991 Q45t with 60,000 miles in like new condition. Im a bit of an Infiniti historian and would be interested in adding this to my collection
Are you in wichita? 🍻

Nice Ram charger, you guys freezing yet in Ks?
I have a 1999 grand marquis with 157,000 on the clock and it just gave me a p3000 code saying my high voltage battery is in a bad state of charge is that possible? Tia
JR..do what you gotta do in your own style to troubleshoot these cars. Just do it! My wife and I enjoy your videos. Keep posting!...and have a Very Merry Christmas!!
People are going to complain and criticize regardless of what you do or how you do it. That's just how people are. If it works, it works... Doesn't matter how you get there. There is a million ways to do just about anything.
What do you mean the last video?
When you will drop twin snails in it???
Jajaja just kidding...all those hoses will break apart if you touch those
The screwdriver trick goes way back to when I learned it as a teen.
Hey
🥇 boom!
I'm not sure we really got 100% confirmation that everything on the Infinity was fully sorted.... and what's the plan with it now that it's (assumed to be) fixed?
Seems like JR is cutting corners.
Soy based insulation was the problem. Manufacturers tried to use it for a time to be more "green" and mice loved the stuff. Very common problem for a while.
The silver stand up cabinets in the garage, what brand are they? Any good ? In the market and looking for recommendations
Why do you insist on calling it O'Reilly's? I don't shop there because I hate their jingle.
I'm 66 and the way you trouble shoot is the very same way my high school basic auto shop class taught in 1973.
You can do a relative compression test using a scope in 5 minutes. You only need 1 channel. Funny I was typing this as the video played & you started talking about using a scope.
It appears you mean you shoot from the hip after examining the detailed troubleshooting procedure the car is willing to do for you. You are thus standing on third base while aiming your firearm, to bend a metaphor or two. Right on.
Have yourself a Merry Little (or big) Christmas and try to not freeze to death.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Canada JR. Keep up the good work!

🥈 nailed it!
Nissans/ Infinity those model years will have have the knock sensor code when you scan it doesn’t need to be replaced it’s a dummy code I use to work for a Nissan dealership and when I would scan them for codes that code will always be stored
My OCD is going off looking at that hood strut being held up by those vice grips 😖😂
Lol Where's your name tag? It's corporate policy JR.
My Professor of Medicine taught me that “ common things occur commonly”…
Lol I literally just finished watching the last video and then I saw this pop up
I'm quick like that 😛
Old nissan harnesses are known for it. Especially engine harnesses with the vg30 e and de due to the size lack of space in engine bays and heat over time
If the engine spinning over sounds even, no on lump or lope every revolution, compression is usually okay, move along.
All the best for festival season 🤣 you must take pinch of salt what people saying 🤣
Start with the pressure test! WTF! That's almost the very last thing a mechanic tests.
No, you keep doing it your way I don’t complain I just watch and learn thanks
Intake temp lasts forever. Ofcourse its wiring lol
If you could, please update we the people on your plans of a new location for your automotive studio.

Happy Holidays everyone!
the only reason that was a relatively easy fix is because it was pre OBD2. from what I've seen on other channels, the OBD2 stuff is so sensitive to the smallest electrical failures, including not using OEM electrics, that it gets wrench-throwingly frustrating. and to think, guys used to gripe about computerized cars from this era being "impossible" to fix XD.
something to think about is 20 years from now, we're gonna be watching Zoomers walk all over repairs for teens and twenties cars that frustrate people right now with the damn hypersensitive electronics and computers that drive the current techs utterly crazy.
It's a '96, so this is actually the first year of OBD2, not pre OBD2.
I wouldn't worry about the haters ! You are smarter than 90% of these people
not wala, wala for filipinos means nothing. the word is voila with a hard "v".
I hate bogged wiring causes so much nonsense.

I highly recommend Redline sr1 fuel system cleaner, bought a 09 accord, car was running very rich. Negative 15%-20% fuel trim, car had 200k miles, 21 mpg highway ... started with 02 sensor, seemed obvious, didn't help much.
Tried Berryman B12 (helped with a hard start car in the past after multiple tanks) nothing, tried Gumout Regaine? High milage, good PEA cleaner, got about .5 mpg increase, tried Gumout multi-system tune up ... Didn't notice anything.
Finally my last shot was Redline, had significantly more PEA, and I kid you not, fixed the rich fuel trim issue. I think after 200k miles they just had build up. But fuel economy went to 25 MPG still not amazing, but that $16 bottle paid for it's self in 2 fill ups.
Didn't believe it would make that kinda of difference, thought it was a fluke, but I've had multiple fillups averaging 25 mpg, I also had multiple fill ups averaging 21-21.5 before. I'm pretty confident its a good option if a car has reasonably high miles, and you believe the previous owner never used anything.
Anyone else wanna see the car crusher finally crush one of Jr's cars
