Thank you for all your nice comments about this video and "Leichtbau", the name of the T1 Panel you`re watching. I´ve built this car over a longer period of time. Fourth year we´re driving it on the Nürburgring now and it´s been a constant evolution. This year it felt better and faster than ever. The Porsche brakes work very balanced and the engine works like a gem. You´re right about the steering,it´s a little heavy due to an altered VW 1303 rack and pinion. It lost 1,5 turn lock-to-lock last winter which made it much easier on the track but of course makes it heavier at the same time. The gearbox is a stock 1989 G50 Porschebox but with the shifts the wrong way due to the shifter. We reach almost 220 km/h over Schwedenkreutz and the Fuchsröhre at 185 km/h so it´s not exactly slow..;)Much better to drive on the track with just the driver though. Go and watch more videos on youtube "vw leichtbau"
Thank you all for your encouraging comments and likings. And thank you Misha for making this clip. The suspension was fixed that same Friday night and early next morning we headed back to Finland via Denmark and Sweden. Best trip so far and we got 12 laps around the Nürburgring which is about 240 kms! That lap with Misha abord was far from the fastest but a decent lap considering two persons. The main thing about this whole build is to keep it as light as possible, and that is also the secret behind it´s performance. And that´s where the car got its name "Leichtbau" which means Lightweight in english. Still improving the car and ourselves every year and next year it has to make sub 9 second times from where we are measuring which is about 20-25 seconds shorter than BtG. We were very close this year already but yellow flags and traffic disturbes a lot.
That's what a sleeper van should look and sound like, I wouldn't want to go around that track any faster. Epic ! I love these old cars that surprise people.
Actually a VW van is MORE aerodynamic than an original Jaguar XKE. The van has the perfect balistic coefficent of 4 to 5. If same weight and power the bus would be faster than the XKE!
Saw the engine (smiled), saw the roll cage (surprised), heard the sound exiting the cones (bigger smile). Still the thought in the back of my head was "If this guy passes anyone I'll be impressed". Well that was epic. I loved it immensely. The best part was that this guy at some point said to himself "I should do that", so flippin' cool!!!!!
This why ilove your chanel Misha! Mix match and interesting content. car enthusiast will always follow you. Love the new school car & ols school car!!! Not boring at all. Keep it up from NYC
I had a 1959 VW Delivery Van ((no side panel windows)) identical to this one cept I went with a 'hotrodded' 2180cc - it had a factory bench seat, same dash & I added a roof vent plus a sunroof as well as some nice 15" MT's on custom chromed steel rims - hella Vdub!! today they fetch 7 figures @ sale
Very nice to see another one of these. Back in 1971 or 1972, a fellow near Portland Oregon put a 911 under his son's VW van, It was a multi-passenger with 2 rows of seats behind the front 2. No roll cage. The donor 911 had been totaled in a roll-over, about a 1968 model with the 3 barrel Webers. It was great fun to ride in, but yours is at a far higher state of tuning and chassis development. Bravo!! Well done!!!!
Best sounding VW bus ever! This is what I love about the car community. It must be a weird sensation when you are not used to it, sitting so high up and over the front wheels. What a great project!!!
The ultimate definition of a sleeper! Insane! Here and there you can hear it moan and creek like an old fighter plane taking a lot of G’s in a tight bank.
Thanks Misha, all my questions about this anomaly of a track bus was answers in this video. That thing is not slow at all. Needs lots of work and tuning in the suspension department though. And that steering.... lots of brute strength to keep in in place. Steering definitely needs redesign and engineering. Really one one of the more interesting vehicles to grace the ring. 👍👍👍
I saw that car at the ring and i wondered why anyone would use a bus as a ringtool, now I know! This is an epic build! BTW, nice to meet you IRL Misha, wery humble and polite person! (I drove a blue Focus RS with big white stickers)
I saw this bus on the local gas station when "Nic " filled up, probably on his way home north from the Ring up the west coast of Finland. I was so puzzled seeing this bus that I didn´t bring myself to ask about it before it was gone. Then I heard the engine and understood what I saw. By coincidence I found this vid; fantastic build!
It must have been in laitila where i had breakfast and a fill-up. Thank you!! It was fantastic even then but getting even better now. The 911 front suspension is mounted and tested and the new engine is getting in as we speak.
As someone who has driven a split window bus daily for the past 20 years, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that! What a beast! With the aerodynamics of a toaster, that was impressive. Would just love to get behind the wheel of that and see the looks on people's faces as it just rips by them! Apart from getting the T1 wrong in the title as it is a T2, great upload. Cheers
I was going to ignore this - but I love VWs and Porsches, so I spent 12 mins. of my life on this video. And I was not disappointed: rollcage, helmets, racing seats w/harnesses...this is a serious vehicle. Even when it broke near the end, I was still impressed, and I wouldn't mind at all going around the 'Ring in it. Nice!
I like your VW bus. Dad had many of these, pop up campers, sleepers and all. He liked beer by the case and closing the pubs, so he crashed most of them, but always healed up quick. Wish he had one with the mods you got here. Drive sober and enjoy it.
This is a shockingly good build! I can’t believe how great the handling setup is. Neutral balance with a lot of grip… and it doesn’t try and rollover on every corner. I’m guessing that engine is making at least 230 hp or more.
I had a '66 Bus with all the windows and transplanted the engine from a 356. It had about 95hp. ...almost double the factory output. I wish it went like this one !!! I'm a fan !! :)
Thank you thankfully and thanks for putting together. Love this VW i did extensive traveling in one of these buses. It was a 91 Westifalia with a canopy top nothing like this. I followed a band for 3 1/2 yrs in that van. I remember a few times being behind schedule i would of loved to have this set up then!! Thx for the memories guys😁👍👍

Pretty wicked ride! how it handles those corners so well is astounding! Only thing though....That's a Type 2, not a Type 1. Type 1 is a Bug(Beetle). just fyi.

Well, this isn´t really a VW T1 anymore like we think of it. I've had this idea for many years, put a Porsche engine into vw bus. I'm glad this man has done it.
