This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway
Oh no, this is the road… to hell."
Happy Birthday to Chris Rea who was born on this date in 1951. If I didn’t upload this video today, I don’t know when I would.
“The Road to Hell (Part 2)” by Chris Rea is the title track off the album which came out in 1989 and featured Eoghan O'Neill on bass. I love the guitar riff @ 03:57!
I was introduced to Chris Rea by my dear, old, internet friend, Helen Anastasia Anderson, from Chipping Lancashire, whose home borders the Bowland Wild Boar Park. We were fast friends for a number of years, mostly via email and then Facebook. We had a lot of common interests. She played bass, loved Jethro Tull, was into Horror, etc. She also had a wicked and irreverent sense of humor. Lynn knew all about Helen and would often ask me to ask Helen what her opinion was on current and past events that were happening (or had happened) in American and English life. Lynn would sometimes say, “If anything should ever happen to me, I know where you’re going… over to England to live with Helen.” She was right, I would never let the fact that Helen was a devout lesbian stand in the way of our love… haha. Helen left all social media a few years back and only had a Twitter account. Of course, I created my own Twitter account just to keep in touch, but it seems as though she has left Twitter as well (I checked last night after writing this). I should probably do the same as I find that place incredibly toxic. Anyway, the two songs she sent me were this one and “Nothing To Fear”. This was some 12 years ago or so. While it’s not my usual cup of tea, I always thought that this song was catchy… reminds me a bit of Dire Straights. When I’ve finished recording my latest batch of videos, I’ll start looking around for what to start working on next. Sometimes, I’ll go to the top my iTunes catalog and work my way down to see if there was something I might have missed or something that I’d started working on and put aside. This was one I’d passed over many times until I finally decided to give it a go. It’s a straightforward song, but the simpler the bass-line, the more important every passing tone, rest, and phrasing becomes.
I’m playing the Westbury Track 2 bass through a SansAmp Bass Driver Ver.2
As a female bassist I've alwasy felt pressure to constantly play more complicated music to be taken seriously. But after watching this channel for a few years it has actually helped me feel more confident and not care about this so much which of courc results to having more fun lol. Thanks Troy for the unexpected gift .
My way of thinking has definitely evolved over the years as well. A bass-line doesn't need to be complicated to be a great bass-line. People get hung up on the acrobatics of complicated bass parts, but "simpler" stuff has its own set of features that require a different focus. I've always tried to be supportive of female bass players, because it is (in my opinion) such a thankless instrument.
@@TJH3113 I know you do and I really appreciate that and I'm sure Ellie Kim does as well lol.
@@TJH3113 I think that the reason you get people like Lee Sklar on so many different artists wanted lists is he is able to figure out the song and what it needs, and play to that. Without any need to get in signature licks or stay busy or anything, he just tries to add what the song needs. Sometimes that turns out to be some iconic busy line, other times it's like In the Air Tonight where he sits on his hands for half the song before showing up to add just the right touches
If so, listen some of AC/DC songs. On most of them bassline is(who would have guessed??) so basic..... An i've heard, that people were laughing at him. "He's basslines' so primitive!!!"... Seriously? AC/DC songs are perfect, PERFECT with these particular basslines. Period! :)
Simple. Groovy. Accurate. Perfectly articulated. Timeless.
Great play!
Thank you very much, Bill!
Hey Troy, good morning!!! Thanks for giving your fans a new video!🎸🎵
Thank you Michael!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Troy, that video has left me brathless!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love it Troy. It is so beautiful and touching until i lost my breath!!!!!! Wo!!!!! If only you knew what your playing does for me. thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!!!!!!! :-)
Wow, thank you Marvine, i’m really glad you liked it.
Yeah, major Dire Straits vibe. Thanks for the video!
Truth! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Thanks Troy, well done. Chris Rea is an amazing artist and I've been a fan of his work since the 1980's but somehow I never managed to see him live, and I don't think I ever will due to mr. Rea's severe health issues. Frankly it's a miracle he's still alive.
I Had the pleasure to meet Chris after a gig in Glasgow 4-5 years ago. An absolute hero of mine ,like you since the 80s and you know what they say about meeting your hero ? Well Chris Rea is an absolute gentleman and thoroughly humble human being as well as a very underrated song writer and guitarist.
@@IronBhoy Well I'll just imagine you shook his hand and thanked him on my behalf. Cheers!
Thank you Wim. Yes, I understand that he is really popular over in England. I did a bit of reading up on him and he has an interesting background and seems to have really done things his own way. I was going to bring up his health, but that would have been a story in itself. It's amazing that he is one of the very small percentage of people to actually survive Pancreatic Cancer, though that survival brought on its own set of health problems.
Wow- forgotten classic from an underappreciated artist in the US. Cool!
Yeah, I don't think he ever toured in the US, did he? Thanks!
@@TJH3113 Don't know but if he did---it wasn't much.
Wow…. I’ve heard this song numerous times over the years but for some reason I always thought it was Dire Straits. Thanks for the upload. Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Curtis. Take care!
Timely choice in light of the current state of affairs. "And all the roads jam up with credit, and there’s nothing you can do. It’s all just bits of paper, flying away from you." Everyone is going to know exactly what Chris was saying there, very soon. Awesome job as usual, Troy.
Thanks Scooter!
That was fun song. Love that bass. Thanks for the video.
Have a wonderful day..!!
I'm glad you liked it. Me too! It was my pleasure. You too!!
Great way to start my morning, thanks for posting!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Great cover Troy. Nice and perfect bass sound, as always. Thx a lot👍👍
Thanks a lot!
Great tune. Great bass playing.
It is, isn't it? Thanks Art.
Definitely a Dire Straights vibe on this song. Spot on timing as always Troy. One of these days you will surprise me with covers of my two requests, Him by Rupert Holmes and Every Kinda People by Robert Palmer.
Yep, I second Every Kinda People by Robert Palmer, just a great tune.
Truth! We'll see...
Great choice, Troy! If the Apocalypse has a soundtrack, the entire “Road to Hell” album will be on it.
It wasn't really mine, but thanks Martin. I should really check out the rest of the album, shouldn't I?
@@TJH3113 Absolutely! The songs "Texas" and "Looking for a Rainbow" are gems from that album. BTW, I should take the time again to say "Thanks" for your channel. I mentioned it a couple of years back, but it's still true--watching you play bass helps me be a better guitarist, because your playing is flawless and I can really see how the bass outlines the chords. Keep up the good work!
Awesome man! I used to watch the movie Beyond the Law 1993 all the time and this was in it, great song, great movie watch the movie if you haven't.
Thanks Andre! I'll check it out.
Damn. As if the song wasn't enough to take me back... it must be 40 years since I saw a Westbury.
Class!
This bass was an incredible find... it's in great shape and still has the vinyl film covering the pickup. Take care!
Preciso!!! Muito legal!! Show !!
Muito obrigado Adriano!
absolutely perfect !
thank you !
thank you !
Absolutely nice man. It's always a pleasure to hear about your history and stories, and of course great playing.
Thank you kindly!
Awesome playing have a good weekend
Thank you, Amin
Wow it really does sound like Dire Straits! Cool song, and as always top notch playing 🤘
It does, doesn't it? Thanks!
@@TJH3113 Always!!
Wow, I almost forgot all about this song.
Glad I could remind you.
Some Commenters express the resonance with Dire Straits, well they did emerge as contemporaries separated by 30 miles of communal coastline, at the time nobody much made that connection. Since then Chris has steered an uncompromising course and perhaps din't rub along with the execs as smoothly as some, more power to you, m8 and UTB ;)
Yes, Chris definitely charted his own course.
VERY NICE TROY
THANK YOU
THANKS FOR WATCHING MARK!
Excellent
Thanks
Well done Troy…
Thank you, Kim...
Fantastic, Troy! I also have been a Chris Rea fan for some time. I discovered him when I was doing my 2 tours in the UK when I was in the Air Force. He's a very underrated guitarist. Very talented and I love his sound. Well Done, My Friend!
Thanks Forrest, I'm really glad that you liked it.
Thanks Troy !
It was my pleasure, James! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Nice cover Troy ;-)
Many thanks Jonathan!!
What a nice song!
And what a nice cover performance!!
Troy you nailed it!!!
Thank you Athanassios!
Haven’t heard this song in a long time. Going to have to add it to one of my playlists. Great job on the cover, Troy! Have a great weekend.
I'd never heard it before Helen sent it to me. Thanks Mark, I'm glad you liked it.
I’d like to see you cover Frank and Moon Zappa song “Valley Girl”. The bass line drives that song nicely.
I remember that one. I'll check it out... Scott Thunes played on that one, I think.
Insane sound!Great cover! Can you do a cover from Dire Straits - Once upon a time in the west?I would like to hear your interpretation. Cheers from Serbia!
Thank you Djordje! I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Take care!
Great job, Troy! That's a really cool song. I hadn't heard it before, but I think I need to check it out a bit more. I too thought it might have been Dire Straits. Kinda has a Tom Waits vibe, but his voice isn't gravelly enough 😁 Thanks!
Thanks Jim... Hope you had a great birthday! The guy has a pretty interesting backstory.
@@TJH3113 Thanks, I did! Yeah, I looked him up. Part 1 of Road to Hell, and Nothing to Fear are both cool songs too.
Good choice Troy. Great song by a great artist. Nice tone on that bass too
Thank you Ray. I'm glad you liked it.
Nice one Troy. The bassline on the original recording is a bit buried in the mix, so good to hear it soloed.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Love this song, nice job!
It's great to hear that! Thanks a lot Edward.
@@TJH3113 Im a guitarist that had to learn bass when our bassist at church went to Japan on a tour and never came back lol. I LOVE your channel! You've been a real inspiration to improve. I think the 1st challenge I accepted from you was Limelight, several years ago. So pleased when I finally started nailing it. Lately Ive been watching you to learn funeral for a friend, Im 60, its so rewarding to learn how to play something you never thought you could. Thank you sir!
Never heard of this song or artist, so thank you. And had I heard it in the wild I'd have thought for certain it was Dire Straits. And that bass is still super cool!
I hadn't either before Helen sent it to me, but I understand that he was pretty big in England. I love the bass. It inspired me to do something different with my MusicMan 5 string. Stay tuned.
@@TJH3113 looking forward to it!
Can you do more rush stuff I know you probably are tired of it maybe but you rock at it
I'll probably get back to some Rush at some point... maybe some tutorials and transcriptions.
Love your vids, 😊
May I ask, is that an Aria Pro II SB Elite II over your left shoulder?
Thank you. Yes, it is an SB Elite I… the single pick up model, which I will probably be selling after I do the video on it, if you are interested.
I have the elite II model in the same finish. It’s a beauty and yours would definitely be of interest to me except I’m in the UK and I really should sell some basses before I buy any more.
Keep up the good work 👍
Chris has been seriously unwell for some years now hence his absence from the music world.
Robert Palmer's 'every kind of people'? Yes yes yes.
Yes, he's a lucky man to have come this far. Good for him!
Kind of new to the channel here. Do you work for Death Studios or are you a collector...?
Welcome. I'm just a collector. I've been a customer of Jeff's for over 25 years now.
@@TJH3113 i use to collect also but no more i have only one left from 1991 and that one is called dead ed.. and he's slowy rotting away...lol
