- I wish a reluctant Happy Birthday to Roger Hodgson who was born on this date in 1950.
Why my reluctance? I can count on one hand the number of videos I've had permanently blocked, taken down, received copyright strikes for... and I never took it personally, until this one. This is a really old video and it kept getting blocked. I'd no sooner file a counter-dispute and win the appeal when the video would get blocked by a different "content owner". I had to have won over a dozen disputes until it was finally taken down and a strike lodged against my channel. I did a little research and learned that Roger Hodgson could give Don Henley a run for his money in the race to be the top copyright nazi. A few years ago I began to notice some covers of the song popping up on UA-cam, so I tried re-uploading mine. UA-cam wouldn't allow it because it said that it was a video that had been previously taken down. I guess they have a long memory. I trimmed a few seconds off the start of the video and it worked, so it's been uploaded, but dormant, on my channel for a couple of years. I thought today might be an appropriate day to make it public. It’s not even a Roger Hodgson song, it was written and sung by Rick Davies. 
"Goodbye Stranger" by Supertramp off of their 'Breakfast in America' album which came out in 1979 and featured Dougie Thomson on bass. The album also had Peter Henderson producing and engineering a few years before he would do the same for Rush on their 'Grace Under Pressure' album.
Busy weekend ahead - Blackberry Smoke on Friday and Micky Dolenz on Saturday.
I'm playing the Fender "Classic 70's Precision".
If it was a demo of that Fender, I wouldn't even buy it dead! What a horrible sound.

I wore this cassette out! Very nice cover and it's ridiculous that these "content owners" can't seem to understand that cover videos are beneficial to them. Shame on you, Roger Hodgson.
Very cool! I’m curious as to why he’s relaxed his stance. Fleetwood Mac started backing off a few years ago when a guy on a skateboard, put out a viral video using one of their songs and it put their album back on the charts.

Just outstanding! Dougie Thomson is one of my all-time favorite bass players. Very understated, he added perfectly to what their songs needed Perhaps one of the best examples of excellent bass writing ever. Thx for covering!

Like many Troy Fans in here....we ALL knew that this video was from when you were in Junior High instead of your High School Senior Year Look you maintain in 2024! 🤣 I happen to resurrect this very tune less than 2 weeks ago to play myself, so it was a Deja Vu moment to see you post this. The "story" behind said posting is crazy and interesting to read. Having hung out on this channel for a few years now, myself and many in here know how cool and calm you are. But, getting the run around from The YT Gestapo Squad had to be frustrating even for you! Personally, I didn't think ANYONE could match Henley in his quest for100% Copyright Control Power! Breakfast in America was the first "rock" album I ever owned back in Jr. High. It does have a a lot of cool bass parts in it. Well played Troy and that P-Bass tone is killer.

Well.... on the plus side, at least we get to hear it at least once and I for one totally understand why you'd want to both play and feature this piece. It's one of those where the bass really makes the song but very few people usually recognise that. Thanks for posting Troy - superbly executed as always! Now if only Hodgson and Davies would get over themselves and admit that they totally need each other...!!

It should remain up. It seems as though Roger has had a change of heart... or something. We've got a good crew of cats and, hopefully, your son will get to meet a few of them. There are a couple that we can't get very close to, but they are good with the other cats.

Wow, what are the odds! I had a detached bicep tendon back in 2007/8? Hope the surgery went well and that you heal quickly.
Can I ask how long you were unable to play? I know a lot of athletes who have had this injury, but not many musicians. I ruptured my left (non-dominant) biceps, so it impacts fretting hand. It's tough to find musicians to ask about this. TIA!@@TJH3113

One of my favorite Supertramp songs. Good choice Troy. Dougie is often overlooked when it comes to best bassist polls but he recorded some gems. Too bad I missed seeing the band in their heyday.

Supertramp was a great band. Reminded me of ELP in a way but I always found it interesting that in the second bridge of the song out of NOWHERE they lyically slide when he's describing how people describe him that "say the devil is my saviour but I don't pay no heed". Just an odd lyrical line.
I agree, but don't immediately make the ELP connection. I'll check out the line you mentioned, it sounds intriguing.
@@TJH3113 The ELP comparison was the chord progressions and changes not so much the prog rock. Kinda like a riff in Joe Walsh's "Lifes Been Good" has a single riff outside of the bluesyness of the song that sticks out.

The staccato for the last 30 seconds or so is great. How do you get it so clipped?!
Thanks. I think that because most of my favorite players used picks, I tried my best to emulate their tight, staccato attack. I have a video in my "Tutorials"? playlist where I talk about muting. It's pretty old, but I wouldn't say anything different today. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

Hello, what kind of guitar is Yamaha TRBX174 for beginners?
Hello. I looked it up and it looks like they sell for a little over $200. You can be a beginner on any bass you want. The idea of starting out on an inexpensive bass is so you don't lose out on too much in case you don't stay with it. I have an Ibanez Talman TMB100 that was a $200 bass and I love it! You really can't go wrong when buying something from one of the bigger name makers - Ibanez, Squier, Yamaha, Harley Benton, Sire... they all make decent instruments.
