  • A Happy Posthumous Birthday to Pete Farndon who was born on this date in 1952.
    “Brass in Pocket” by The Pretenders off of their self-titled debut album which came out in late 1979, early 1980 in the US and the UK respectively and featured Pete Farndon on bass.
    I always thought The Pretenders were a solid band and I really liked some of the bass-lines that Pete came up with. This one has a nice "chug" during the verses that contrasts with a tighter, more staccato feel during the pre-chorus and chorus.
    Pete passed away from a drug overdose at the age of 30 on April 14th, 1983. Less than a year prior, on June 14th 1982, he had been fired from The Pretenders, mostly at the behest of guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott who essentially gave the band an, “Either he goes, or I go” ultimatum. Ironically, James Honeyman-Scott died of an overdose himself just two days following Farndon’s firing.
    Speaking of The Pretenders, Lynn and I had tickets to see them opening for Journey at Bethel Woods later this summer. Neither of us have seen The Pretenders before and we were both really looking forward to the show. Unfortunately, all of the concerts for this season have been rescheduled or cancelled. This particular show was cancelled. The tickets were pretty pricey, much more than we'd ever pay just to see Journey. While Journey puts on a good show, I didn't feel they were worth the amount that these tickets cost. We were primarily going to see The Pretenders. I felt a little better about the cancellation after learning that Ross Valory and Steve Smith had been fired from the band and hope to see The Pretenders sometime in the future.
    I’m playing the Ibanez Talman TMB100 bass (which has the E string tuned down to D for this song) through a SansAmp Para-Driver.

    A great example of a bass line that is so locked in with the drums, along with the occasional tasty lick.
    Simple, yet effective. When I was teaching lessons, this was one of a couple of songs I would use as a practice tool to teach right hand technique and locking in with the drums. Thanks for sharing. Great playing.

    Always liked this song and the bass line. Remember seeing the video in heavy rotation on MTV shortly after we got cable TV. Differing speculation on why Pete was sacked from the band. Some say his playing was sub-par while others say it was drugs. Another theory is Chrissy wanted him out due to hard feelings from a failed relationship. Its a shame because the Pretenders were great and might have been bigger if they stayed together. Losing two members was a huge blow and got to laud Chrissy for plowing forward.
    BTW - the bass line for "My City Was Gone" was created by another great (and underappreciated) bassist - Tony Butler. Might be a song to cover Troy!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому +1

      Cool. Me too. True, I remember thinking that they were sunk after losing two members in such a short span of time... especially Honeyman-Scott, who was a big part of their sound.
      Yes, I was going to do that one until I found out that it was Butler. Better that I uploaded this one anyway, as it is much older. I've got that one and a couple of others. I went on a small Pretenders binge.

    Really nice cover and thanks for the extra time at the end! This is a really cool bass line. I'm also really fond of the line for My City Was Gone, even though it's used by a certain radio host I am NOT fond of lol.
    I once bought tickets to the Bodeans at Summerfest in Milwaukee. But only because John Hiatt was opening for them with a solo acoustic set. We left after Hiatt and got to check out the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies instead of watching the Bodeans...who I am also not fond of 😂

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you, it was my pleasure. I think so too. I was going to post "My City Was Gone" before I found out that it was Tony Butler who played bass on it. And I read about the radio host thing and was surprised that Chrissy didn't have a problem with it in the end.
      We did something similar with Foreigner opening for Kid Rock a few years back. We stayed for a couple of Kid Rock songs and, I have to admit, it wasn't bad, but, I also have to be completely honest and say that, the crowd was a disgrace.

      "In 1999, Rolling Stone magazine reported that, according to Hynde's manager, Limbaugh had neither licensed the song nor asked permission to use it. According to Rolling Stone, EMI took action after Limbaugh told a pair of reporters in 1997 that "it was icing on the cake that it was [written by] an environmentalist, animal rights wacko and was an anti-conservative song. It is anti-development, anti-capitalist and here I am going to take a liberal song and make fun of [liberals] at the same time."[5] EMI issued a cease and desist request that Limbaugh stop using the song, which he did. When Hynde found out during a radio interview, she said that her parents loved and listened to Limbaugh and she did not mind its use. A usage payment was agreed upon which she donated to PETA.[4][5] She later wrote to the organization saying, "In light of Rush Limbaugh's vocal support of PETA's campaign against the Environmental Protection Agency's foolish plan to test some 3,000 chemicals on animals, I have decided to allow him to keep my song, 'My City Was Gone', as his signature tune..."

    Hey Troy, thank you for replying. You have inspired me to finally use the 5th string (low B) on my bass, which I built from a kit. Always wanted a 5 string, then found it was a pain to damp and had it switched off. All the songs I was learning are for 4 string. With brass in pocket I had difficulty accurately tuning low so I used the low B string, to reach D. Whenever I heard the song, I always felt that note was lower than E natural. Shame Pete's gone, I think it was a motorcycle crash. I ride a bike too and play bass. The influences in one's life. You shine on me, Troy.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому

      No problem. I don't play my 5 string often, but I think it's always a good idea to have one. It was my primary bass when I was gigging a lot. For the most part, I just used the B string as a thumb-rest. Unfortunately, I believe Pete drowned in his bathtub if a drug related incident. Stay safe Shannon!

They finally cancelled the last summer event at our Amphitheater here in SYR.

      You're right about that. I was shocked to hear that Randy was coming back. I can't imagine he needs the money. Man, we've had about a dozen shows cancelled or rescheduled. It's hard to keep track. I just hope Broadway reopens soon.

    Troy,
    The Pretenders are one of my favorite bands! Pete Farndon and James Honeyman-Scott were gone too soon. Great job as always.
    A song I got reacquainted with is Don’t Fight It, by Kenny Loggins and Steve Perry. Forgive me if you’ve already done a video of it, but if you haven’t, please consider it!

    Love ❤️
    The first 2 Pretenders albums are fantastic, just a great combination of people.
    I got to see that ensemble play in a Memphis club, sitting about 10 feet away from the stage.
    They had a great sound live. A band i was in at the time did about a half dozen Pretenders covers,
    and I always enjoyed playing Pete’s basslines.
    (Particularly Kid and Mystery Achievement.)
    Query-are you using both pickups on this recording?
    That Talman sounds better than it has a right to. 😉

      Very cool.
      I'm not familiar with Kid. I'll have to check that out. But I've got Mystery Achievement set to the side for a future upload.
      Yes, I very rarely, if ever, favor one pick-up for another on any of my two p/u basses.
      I agree. I think these basses are incredible.

      Actually, the only "Jazz-style" p/u's I have are in my Jazz basses, though the the Spectors, and this bass, have J's in the bridge positions. I really like the sound of this bass and I'm glad you did as well. Thanks. Actually, I wasn't all that disappointed as it was a lot of money to see, essentially, one band - The Pretenders. We've seen Journey a few times before for quite a bit less than what these tickets cost.

    Lucky me. I got to see the Pretenders in 1982 at Pauly Pavillion at UCLA with Bow Wow Wow opening for them. I was always fascinated by the cover art on their debut album. The combination of the font, their clothing and Pete and Chrissy's F U attitude on their faces. Interesting how he was slightly apart in the photo from the rest of the band and he was the first one to go. That album got constant play from start to finish for all of 82 and 83. Such a great album. Their best in my opinion. The Wait is such a great song-I love Petes bass on that song-you should revisit it. To me it epitomizes the band.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому

      Yes, very lucky you. Pete was the first to leave the band but the second to pass away. I thought it was so ironic that one addict has another addict thrown out of the band for being an addict and then turns around and dies of an overdose. I had to look up the album covers and was surprised to find that I didn't recognize one song by name off of their second album, but knew a bunch off of their third. I'll check out "The Wait" on your recommendation.

    I remember when the first Pretenders album first came out. Definitely, a masterpiece. I tried to get some friends to listen to the album, but they weren't interested, because of the song Brass in Pocket. They thought all the songs on the album would be pop songs like Brass in Pocket. The album has a lot of great hard rock songs, but, unfortunately, these hard rock song got little or no time on the radio.

      @@TJH3113 I was living Southern California at the time, and Brass in Pocket was on heavy rotation on the rock radio stations. They would sometimes play Kid, but never any of the hard rock songs from the album. Other songs might have been played on the radio in different parts of the country. The first album is unusual, because it has pop songs, hard rock songs and punk songs... I saw The Pretenders Mark II in 1984 - great show, but not the same band, sound wise, without H-Scott and Farndon... Thanks for all the videos!
