Happy Birthday to Chris! My own brother turned 70 yesterday!
Great video Miguel! That was so cool the way you disappeared at the end!
@@rodshop5897 happy belated birthday to your brother 🎶
@@miguelbass That is so kind! Thank you! And love your 8-string bass videos. More, please!
Wore my striped jacket to work today in honor of Chris and made sure I showed up late too! Lol. Happy Birthday in heaven to the greatest bassist that ever was!! 🎁🎂🎈
Do you know why I like your UA-cam performances so much? Because they make me re-appreciate YES music even more! In the best possible way - because of their musicallity. You make me hear, and love, a part of YES songs that I didn't hear, or paid attention to before. "Going for the One" was the first YES album I bought right after its release, so I've known this song for 45 years now. It's in 'my system' like YES music is in all of our, fans', systems. But you put a magnifying glass on it, and point to Chris's fabulous contributions, making us all aware of what, and how great they really were.
Besides, you're a fabulous bass player yourself - of course!
Thanks for offering this Work of Love to all of us!
That is indeed my purpose, to magnify or underline Chris' works of art within the works of Yes (or Chris' solo works), which have been a life time passion for me, and hopefully sharing it with others who feel this way about Chris' music. Thank you very much for sharing your passion with us!
As I read your comment, I cant agree more. Stuck on StarshipTrooper in 71 as an 11 yr old in a friends basment. Listened to Harry Nielsen there too until his dad took a nail to the record after playing Breaking my heart 15 times in a row. Life got in the ,but thankfully, 40 yrs later I learned why I loved both Yes and Harry. Thank s Miguel for all you fabulous work. Love to see you in the stripped Jacket? Have you ever done Future times / Rejoice?
Well done. Chris must be guiding your hands brother. I can feel his energy in your playing. 😇
Thank you so much Tony!
@@miguelbass no miguel…thank you😇😎
Miguel, I can’t get over how incredibly well that 8 string cuts through the barrage of music! One of my favorites, that entire album was stellar!
Your playing was perfect, as always; I’m sure that Chris has listened to you many times from wherever he is in the Cosmos and grinned!
Thanks for sharing! Take care!
Thank you very much very much Paul. I absolutely love the a Ranney bass and I have another excellent 8-string. I think Chris managed to cut through really well on Yesshows, although the studio version sounds like it’s struggling to be heard on the mix.
One of my favorite Yes songs!!!! Amazing Job Miguel!!!!
Thank you, dear Poly!
I Love and miss Chris so much and Alan too I've seen Yes many times live in many versions all with Chris and Alan. RIP Miquel nice work I learn a lot of yes music by watching you thanks for all the lessons.
Thank you very much Parick. We still miss him and so we will!
IMO.. You should be the bass player of YES.
Just so so so so good so so so happy joyous so so so right on so so so you.
Thank you, dear Paul!
This is amazing! I'd love to see Parallels one day!
I did it a long time ago. My second video ever made! Thank you very much! ua-cam.com/video/SVefESFtd3g/v-deo.html
So good...the only difference to the recordings the strings are paired the other way on his Rick. I watched him play this on his last US tour on his Ranney from three feet away. Never forget.
Thank you, Paul for sharing your memories!
Sugestão: Yours is no disgrace
Love your 8 string bass
Sounds great
RIP Chris
Thank you so much, dear David
Pure happy joy of emotional release. YYYYEEEEESSSSS
Greetings, Paul. Thank you very much 🎶
Always an uplifting tune, awesome playing it put a big smile on my face
Glad you enjoy it, Michael!
You never ever disappoint Miguel! Spot on as always! Thank you for sharing your gift with us!
Thank you dear John! I hope you are well!
Superb! First time I heard this song it tookme days to get the ascending and descending bass line out of my head. Your playing has brought back the joy I felt singing the bass melody.
Thank you so much, David. I know that joy coming from those ascending and descending notes!
It's almost 8 years since He's gone, but i still miss Him deeply.
Always my musician #1
Great job, Miguel. After watching your videos i often discover some new details in Chris' basslines. This is funtastic to see You playing His lines and stick so close to the original.
Thank you very much, Art! 🎶
30 seconds in and I'm already saying Miguel is awesome! Shared!
And this also confirms to me something I've long held as a belief.
When you're learning Bass, and you're learning from Geddy Lee (who learned from Squire), you're not having to learn anything like this. Rush, at its heart, is a jam band with progressive leanings. They'd be just as happy playing Cream as they would Yes. If you're already somewhere in your playing, Geddy Lee can be figured out. Practice and time.
But Chris Squire????? You're going to be sitting there a LONG TIME, remembering everything he's doing in 1 minute, let alone a 5 minute song. He was more than a Bassist. He was a mini-orchestra.
That just reminded me of how many takes I did for this song. You're absolutely right. If you're going "note-for-note" and you want to be highly accurate the amount of effort-memory required can become overwhelming. Chris' note articulations contain all the spirit and intention that matters, that makes the difference. Of course I do have those notions in my head, of so many years hearing the songs with that focus, but when you attempt to reproduce it with the record button pressed... And Yes I agree with Chris being himself the "mini-orchestra"... and then add vocals and sometimes bass pedals....
Awesome Miguel, as always, thank you! I used to spend hours upon hours studying the bass playing and singing on the album YESSHOWS. I fell in love with Chris Squires musicality very early on (1972), and all other aspects of human frailty aside, that man was a musical genius! A powerhouse! I love his voice, his bass playing, but most importantly, I love his choice of harmonies and melodies! What style!, What taste!
It was like listening to Magic! ua-cam.com/video/PCcMxdm_-8s/v-deo.html
Totally agree... that's why we're still inspired today by Chris!
As Jon once said about Chis, I think it only fair to say about you. Exceptional, as always! Thanks Miguel.
Thank you very much, dear friend. I'll keep trying my best!
Top top playing Miguel. My 1st Yes album the first Yes track I ever listened to. Well done again 👌
Thank you very much, John!
Simply Immaculate🤗
Thank you 🎶
Nailed it Again. Great Ears think alike..
Thanks Rick! All the best.
I've always found it so hard to describe this tune in Yes' catalogue. They often displayed style that weren't so next to progressive rock, but this one stands out.
What is it? Disco-influenced rock? Bluesy rock tune? I really don't know.
When I first heard it I was so disappointed: I expected something more 'prog' by Yes, they were giving me this one... but after some time and more listenings to other albums I like much less than GFTO, I picked this track up again and... well, it finally sounded different to me. It's amazing how the band took a complete opposite direction to their own typical one, though managing to blend Rick's keyboard scales with the rest of the bluesy-disco sounding ensemble... it's a bit of 'prog' peeping in to remind they're still Yes.
Steve Howe pulls strong on his slide guitar, making the track sound even more 'American' than it already does... but as usual it's Chris' job that stands out.
I can't really get where he picked up these scales... they're utterly inventive, anyone else would lose himself in all this work, he doesn't, he goes where he's supposed to go... and what he does greatly comes at the end of it all, when instead of rising up on the notes following the scale he's using, he reverses back to the lowest one giving the song a true powerful sound.
Sad note: the way the album was recorded. So poorly. It's cold. Trebles are freezing, bass lines are devoiced, there really is something wrong with it all.
Your comments really make me wonder on a couple of things - Yes, if anyone attempts to make an analysis to Chris' bass line of this song - he will have a hard time because it's a carrousel of notes which never seems to stop. I also agree about the "american" direction of the steel guitar sound, which also reminds me of the guitar work in.. "America". Finally, the trebley, distorted sound of the whole record (that's why I prefer the Yesshows version).
@@miguelbass I don't know whether Yes fans agree on the distorted way this album was recorded. I can't think they didn't notice it. It's totally different from any other album they recorded at Advision or even 'Relayer' at Chris' house.
Problem is that GFTO is indeed one of their best ever produces and the way it was recorded really is a shame.
What strikes me of Chris' playing is how he could be in the right place at the right time in the midst of all those notes and of course his quick licks.
Aye, it's similar to Steve's work on 'America', absolutely. Rick's piano work adds a lot of 'Muscle Shoals' feel to the song, it's their best try at a bluesy track.
I was wondering when you were going to get around to playing Going For The One. You look like you're really enjoying yourself. Once again, thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much, Paul. I really do enjoy this one!
Sensational! That's a vintage Chris bass line if ever there was one.
thank you very much, Rick!
New subscriber here. I'm a bassist from Buffalo NY really appreciate these videos. I've been listening to Yes since the beginning. Your tone & attention to the little things that Chris put in his lines is great. Keep it up my friend.
Hello Joe. Welcome to the channel and thank you for your kind words. You will find here (or my other social networks) many who do care for those little things, those details because we love so much Chris’ music. All the best 🎶
Brigado, Miguel!
Um abraço amigo!
Yes a definite favy!!! Pure awesomeness🎵✨️💯
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it 🎶
As usual you nailed it again!! I'm always finding something I've never heard before or maybe missed so now I'll be in the car listening for those parts in-between the potholes thanks for sharing your beautiful talent with us and keeping Chris's music alive ❤️ 😊🎵
Dear Elizabeth, thank you very much. I will keep trying my best because I know that there’s who cares for every nuance in Chris’ playing as much as I do. All the best 🎶💚🐟
Perfecto! And that instrument is beautiful, very classy.
Thank you very much! All the best
Holy hell that was heavy! Great playing! Please do Beyond and Before. Chris hits us in the beginning hard with his Rickenbacker.
Thank you very much, Michael!
Awesome. Thanks for keeping his memory alive when you play pieces like this. Great job. RIP Chris.
Thank you, Eddy, for being here and bringing more meaning to a celebration that is from all Chris' fans around the world
I listen to this album once a week. Chris is truly missed. Very nice work here, Miguel.
Thank you very much!! Thanks for being here!
🫵🏻 Da Man! Excellent 👍🏻
Hi Nigel! Thanks for watching. Glad you're enjoying the videos🎶
Fantastically done! Your playing really highlights the complexity of Squire his way of playing
Thank you, dear Olivier
That Ranney bass could very well be the best sounding bass I've ever heard. Simply amazing.
Great playing and congratulations on figuring the bass part, it's not that obvious. At least, on the live version, you can hear the bass well. On the studio version, the bass is buried in the mix. (That entire album needs a remix anyway, whoever did the original mix messed up...)
Let’s hope the multi tracks still exist. This is, to me, the Yes album that needed it the most ! Merry Christmas, Michel! 🎶🎄❤️🎸
@@miguelbass I absolutely agree with you! Feliz Natal, Miguel!
Thanks!
Thank you very much, Paul!🎶
Have a pleasant weekend
That is a handsome instrument
Thank you very much, Dan.
Gracias Miguel! Masterfully preformed as always. I remember being 2nd or 3rd row at the Providence (R.I. USA) YES show when the band was premiering the GFTO material. Chris and Alan were elegant thunder.
Thank you very much, Egroeg. I have seen some footage from this tour (and this version is also from Yesshows) - For sure one of the tightest tours!
…fabulous!!
Thank you, Gussy! All the best
Nice cover man, you always have the best Yes bass covers
Thank you very much, Sergio. Greetings from Portugal!
You're still rocking it on bass, Miguel. For a moment I thought this was the album version because this live version sounds so similar. I love that the bass in your videos is so prominent in the mix, it soothes my ears in a delightful way. Cheers.
Thank you Alex! Always a joy to hear from you.
You rock, Migue. Y follow you since I can't remember.
We all get older. It feels great to know that you're there along the way!
Thank you so much, you know I was waiting for this one for a long time!!
Finally I have a the bass for this! Thanks for being here Edgar!
Nice Bass Brother!! Sounds nice!!!
Thank you, Melvin!
Great job! Hello from NJ! 🗽
Hi Bino. Thanks for watching and greetings from Portugal!
@@miguelbass Going to see Jon Anderson with the Band Geeks next month.🎸 They're from Staten Island where I grew up. I'm seeing them in NJ.
Beautiful
Thank you!
Wow! Wow, Miguel. Just wow. Both you and Chris Squire. Thank you.
Thank you for being here, Guy!
Amazing playing! That bass, that tone!!! You nailed it Miguel, as always. You honor Chris so beautifully. Thank you.
Thank you, dear friend! All the best!
Nice job M. Bass sounds beautiful!!!
Thank you my dear friend!
@@miguelbass You're very welcome my friend. You're the best!!!
Amazing!
Thank you very much!
Fantastico 👏👏👏
Thanks Zaro!
Miguel, you're fantastic. I also love Yes and Pink Floyd. I'm a bit of a musician, but I think you've probably graduated from a music academy or something. I'm following you.
Hello Dragutin. Thank you very much for your kind words. At first I was self-taught but later I did go to music school and recently I am taking a degree in music. Although I am a music teacher, I want to keep learning! All the best from Portugal.
I love how you’re singing along while your playing, it just makes me so happy that you’re going thru this much effort to present Yes correctly
I love Chris vocals on this one just as much as the bass line so I try to play and sing although I don’t have Chris voice !
@@miguelbass no problem with me! You’re so cool, you’ve definitely got Chris’ technique
Great, Miguel!
Thank you very much, Peter!
Man that sounds awesome always enjoy watching your videos
Thank you very much, Dan! All the best
Always loved this bass part! Awesome job, muito amor!
Thank you so much!
Excelente Miguel! Abraço. 🤘
Obrigado Tony! Grande abraço🎵
What a way to end my night. I just watched an Olivia Newton-John video, Come on Over, and now the AMAZING Miguel playing one of my favorites, by one of my favorites. Give love each day.
Thank you, Rob! I'm always happy to hear from you!
Superb!
Thanks a lot, Paul! Be well!
Genial!
Gracias Alfonso!
Fantastic! Amazing job! Thank you, Miguel!
Thank you very much for watching!
YESSSSS! Been waiting for this one!!
Hi Manny! Glad you enjoyed it! All the best.
@@miguelbass Question at 1:57 what chord shape is that? Sounds amazing turned up in a car system.
@@MannyQuacioua Do you mean the low E? I am sliding up from D on the A string but I hit the low E string, so it's not a chord, although it sounds full because of being an 8-string bass.
@@miguelbassWow you’re like one of the smoothest bass players I’ve seen!
What can I say....... You are the Boss ... and long life to Chris memory...
Merci Lionel!!
Perfect as ever, Miguel! - what's the source track? Different from the original but closer to the original than any live versions I've heard....
Simon - it is Yesshows. I did a bit of EQ so allow for my bass to stand out a bit more (difficult with two 8-strings competing). Thank you!
Ah yes, I recognise it now (it's about the only Yes album I still have only on vinyl). Different lines from the studio version - was it always an 8-string, even on the original? I know there were octaves, especially at the beginning, but now I need to listen again! Well done! ...btw, I'm going to transcribe Statue of Justice, but I was wondering if you're getting around to Chamber of Horrors...? Or The Prophet?
Miguel y Going for the one. Lo mejor del dia. Bravo!!!!
Muchas gracias, Ana!
Love this live version. Great stuff 🎶🎶🎶
Thank you very much, Neil!
Muito bom! Parabéns!
Muito obrigado, André. Um abraço.
Great line, Ranney sounds so good and your playing is spot on! Bravo!
Thank you dear friend!
Hahahahah... I got halfway through this before realizing you're playing to the Yesshows recording and not the album release!
I always loved the Yesshows versions much more :)))
Bravo, Miguel. 👏 It's interesting that you chose the Yesshows version. Better clarity? Easier to pick the bass out of the mix?
Yes, I really love the Yesshows mix. The album is really not very generous with the bass mix, plus I really like the band's performance in this show. Thanks for watching :)
Me preguntaba si harias la segunda voz de Chris... Y LO HICISTE. XD
Gracias Zuma!🎶
Did Chris Squire use an 8-string bass in the original recording?
I was wondering the same thing
Yes, the 8-string "potato-head" prototype he was given to by Rickenbacker since late 73. There was another prototype which was handed to John Entwhistle.
@@miguelbass Didn´t know that. Actually, didn´t have a clue it was a Rick prototype. Thanks Miguel !!
Thankfully, yours goes up to eleven :-)
that extra push over the cliff ;)
YESSHOWS VERSIÓN?
Yes!
Big fan of yes here. Great video. I always hated this song. Is so shrill. Unbearable sound and Andersons voice gets in your nerves... Your job, impeccable as always.
Thank you very much, enkiitu! All the best from Portugal!
Amazing!
Thank you, Alain 🎶
